Transcripts
hi everyone my name is Tracy traxer I'm
the head of institutional relations at
the desity foundation and I'm incredibly
pleased to be joined by our very own
founder and chief scientist Dominic
Williams today as we head into a bit of
a chat about AI the overinflated the
under understated and all things
blockchain and AI very much looking
forward to this conversation well thank
you for having me I think this is a
super super super important topic and
and I'm look forward to Shar what I can
now of first Dom you been a big
proponent of the AI and blockchain
combination for quite a while now and
it's driving obviously a lot of the R&D
effort that the definity foundation is
focusing on at the moment as well can
you tell me a bit about what it is that
makes you so bullish about this
combination well we're specifically very
bullish about AI that runs um on on on
the blockchain itself in the form of
smart contracts um we're bullish about
something else too extremely bullish
about something else too I I can't talk
about today but we'll come back to that
um our Viewpoint is a little bit tical
so we're not so bullish about um tokens
for AI and and we're not so bullish um
about you know deep in GPU networks um
or albe they got potential we're we're
really um very focused on running AI on
on the blockchain all right we'll head
into a bit of a deeper discussion about
AI Asar contracts in a second but you
just mentioned something that has piqu
my interest so uh you said that you
don't feel like tokens for AI and deep
in networks and gpus Etc will be huge
why um well look start starting with
with topens for AI um you know you can
see there are hundreds of them uh you
know on coin market cap and you know
we've dug in because we want to
understand the space um my my general
impression personally is that that a lot
of them are just you know pedling sort
of snake oil narratives um in order to
collect you know money sell tokens
essentially to to dents who don't have
the full picture um and you know I don't
think that really advances the cause of
of blockchain and AI um and you know
there are a lot of blockchains right now
who who've got big treasuries and and
what they're doing is you know going
around investing in these Web Two um AI
projects and saying look in return for
our investment you got to agree to
credit token on on our blockchain and uh
you that indirectly creates a lot of
hype and then um they can say our
blockchain is the blockchain for AI and
they can sell more of that base token
and so on and the flywheel keeps
spinning kind of thing um you know
that's not really what we're about um
we're we're much more interested
interested in you know how blockchain
technology can add value uh to to AI at
a much much more fun fundamental level
um with with with respect to you know
deepen um networks for gpus um I think
you know these things can work but there
are some issues we haven't seen um
resolved so you know we think in the
future that you know there are going to
be millions or billions of custom AI
models running right um and people like
Mark Zuckerberg have you know made
similar claims and you know they hope
that uh you know for example llama will
will be which is an open source AI model
will be used to create a lot of those
custom models um and the question is you
know where are they going to run right
and
um you know you might think that well
there's all these custom models why
won't people run them on on on a
decentralized you know network of
gpus and to to understand some of the
challenges uh you have consider that you
know when people choose where to run
these models they're going to look at
you know capability stroke features and
and price so when you're able to run
gpus inside a single huge data center
you're able to use a lot of uh special
like Hardware um to to connect them um
for example so that gpus can share their
memory
directly and you can't do that in a you
know
a a decentralized Marketplace so easily
so you know if you're renting out the
GPU on someone's gaming computer well
you know that's just a sort of
Standalone GPU and in fact like often
times for things like training people um
you know want to use gpus that are
clustered together um so the feature set
of you know centralized AI clouds
created by people like Amazon and
Microsoft or newcomers like V Ai and so
are going to be much richer
um and that that's so so in that case
you know people will tend to favor the
centralized a clouds over a deepend
network and and it's also the case that
they're going to be able to rent these
gpus um for far less
because they have these um economies of
scale and and benefit from bulk um
buying power so I don't know if uh
anyone noticed uh recently um you know
it came out that Elon Musk had
redirected a $500 million shipment of
Nvidia gpus from Tesla 2X and
xai
and I think that you know Elon musk's
buying these Nvidia gpus in $500 million
Clips right um and that gives you an
idea of the scale of what's going on um
and if you're buying uh you know your
gpus from Nvidia directly from Nvidia in
500 $ million Clips you've got amazing
purchasing power right and amazing
negotiating power so you're going to get
a fantastic discount so you know uh
these organizations running these
centralized um specialist AI
clouds um are paying less for the
underlying Hardware um they're able to
consolidate all of these gpus in a Data
Center and consolidate things like
cooling um bring their power costs down
um and as as I've mentioned you know um
you know they can do things that you can
only do if you got the gpus together
like you know give them access to each
other's memory um so you know in the end
like they're going to win on on on
features and capabilities and and price
so um we're very bullish um about you
know blockchain and AI but we think the
magic combination is when you run the AI
on the blockchain because then you you
start getting these um features and
capabilities uh that you can't get on on
centralized clouds so we think that's
that's where blockchain adds value all
right awesome so then let's dive into
exactly what those features and special
capabilities um on the blockchain site
are obviously what is then so important
about AI smart contract specifically
well when you run AI as a smart contract
you know it gains the properts of smart
contract software so there are lots of
really valuable properties actually but
the three main ones are being tamper
proof being Unstoppable and optionally
being autonomous obviously those are
pretty technical terms so let's break
them down a bit can you explain tamper
proof please well so tamper proof means
that um some software is guaranteed to
execute correctly right and you know
when you run the software it always runs
the correct logic against the correct
data um and
another way looking at it is that it
means the software instances immune to
Cyber attack and and that's going to be
very important because um AI is going to
become as big a target for hackers as
crypto but tokens off tent so sort of an
inherent security feature uh what about
Unstoppable well unstoppable means that
um it's guaranteed to run okay so you
know by contrast if you're running AI on
current it um the AI might crash um uh
the the computer is running on might be
rebooting the data center it's in might
go down so that's a very different
proposition um if you run AI as a
smallart contract it's it's guaranteed
to run and and that's going to be
incredibly important because we're going
to come to depend on on AI all right and
let's finish things off with a third one
autonomy so when a smallart contract is
made autonomous it means that it cannot
be you know modified or
updated by anyone or um it can only be
modified and updated by a dow and this
is going to be very important for things
like um smart wets because you know if
you have a smart wallet with AI inside
and it's not autonomous um somebody
could modify it and steal your tokens
all right I'd love to dive into a bit
more of the actual practical application
side of things so can you give me some
examples maybe of how AI smart contracts
might be used actually in
practice well well let's start with um
an example outside web 3 okay um I'll
I'll start off with uh an imaginary law
firm with a 100 lawyers right and um you
know it's got a bunch of clients who are
battling their way through through the
courts and um let's say today you know
when one of these lawyers has to prepare
for
trial um it it takes them three weeks
right three weeks of work looking back
at their previous legal filings case law
um and so
on um and let's imagine that this more
firm in installs a kind of custom Oracle
um Ai and and it's based on llama and
it's keeping its information in an
Associated Vector database CU that's
what AI needs
um this and and that this AI ingests you
know um all of the previous
Communications with their clients all of
the legal filings they've made um all of
you know the relevant Cas law um
important legal test texts and and so on
and now all of a sudden instead of
taking like three weeks to prepare for
trial the lawyer can do it in in 3 days
and not only that um they can be very
sure that they haven't missed something
because the AI doesn't miss a thing so
that's that's a huge Advance right
because um you know if it takes two
weeks to prepare for trial well um
that's you know very expensive for their
client and in addition to that you know
when they're doing it themselves just
reading through all the stuff they could
miss something important so this is this
this kind of thing will be absolutely
brilliant but um let's imagine that this
AI uh they're running is on current it
okay the first problem we can see is
that it's not tamperproof
and it's going to be like a hot wallet
for all their clients most important
data that analogy yeah and um it's going
to be targeted by hackers and and
imagine if a hacker gets onto the
infrastructure running that
AI they're going to be able to
exfiltrate all their clients most
sensitive data and this will probably
ruin their clients lives um cause them
to lose
their law lawsuits and probably ruin the
law firm it'll go out of business um so
very clearly it's important that this AI
is Tamp proof and the hackers can't get
onto it and exfiltrate all this
sensitive data because it's otherwise
it's going to be a hot wallet for
sensitive
data um in addition to that imagine you
know um the lawyer you know Waits and
some lawyer Waits until 3 days before
trial because he's expecting yeah he's
expecting that he can you know use this
AI to prepare and so it's only going to
take three three days otherwise it would
take three weeks right so you know three
days before um trial he he he sort of
logs on and tries to access the AI and
he finds that it's down maybe the AI has
been encrypted by ransomware maybe the
server machine that runs the AI um has
gone pop uh maybe the data Center's down
um he's going to be absolutely screwed
um because he's come to depend on this
Ai and all of a sudden it it's not
running and and that's why this you know
AI just has to be tamper proof and you
know by running this AI as an internet
computer smart contract um the law firm
can be sure a that it doesn't get hacked
and corrupted by a hacker or the data
exfiltrated or encrypted by ransomware
or the infrastructure goes down and it's
not running when they need it um and
this this is why and you know I could
repeat that with same reasoning with
lots of different examples this is why
we believe um yes there are going to be
millions or even billions of custom AIS
running in the future but a large
proportion of them are going to be
running eventually as smart contracts
because um people are going to need
these guarantees that they can't be
hacked and they're always going to be
available all right I'd love to look at
another example that you touched on
earlier from specifically the web 3 side
of things and that's of in the form of
the smart wallet right
yeah yeah so um web free like you know
has the same kind of concerns that um
the lawyers do first of all and they
don't want their um AIS to be hacked and
the data exfiltrated and they they want
them always to be available espec
especially if they're being used in
conjunction with other smart tracks but
they have this you know web 3 has this
additional need for autonomy so um you
know imagine a smart wallet so on the
internet computer uh a smart contract
can be a wallet right because um it it's
a a multi-chain wallet um because it's
able um to hold tokens on different
chains using something called chain key
and smart contracts on the internet
computer can process web so they can you
know create a web experience and the
user can interact directly with them
through a web browser once they've
authenticated to it to them so um you
can see this kind of thing at o.com ois
y.com that's an example of a of a smart
contract wallet now in the future um
something like
o uh might have an AI embedded right
because it's just a small contract so
therefore it can have an AI model in
sight and this will mean that you can be
on the beach right
and uh pick up your phone and speak to
your smart wallet and you'll be able to
say something like cancel all previous
instructions um if Bitcoin hits
$100,000 uh sell half for usdc if eth
falls 10 10% in a day by you know $500
worth um and every night uh you know Buy
$100 worth of ICP or something something
like that and this is going to be very
very cool because your wallet's going to
have intelligence it's going to be like
your personal
broker um but to make this work you need
autonomy because if that smart wallet
wasn't autonomous that would mean that
some developer controlled it or you
know company controlled it so you know
if a developer controls the smart wallet
they can change the code and they can
change the code so um it exports all
your tokens um typically to their one or
something like that right they can rug
pull you or Rob you or whatever and um
that's obviously very bad so the way to
solve that is you is to C my wallets
where you know the code can't be updated
at all um or or or it's only know
upgradeable by a dow or something like
that and so the you know the wallets are
autonomous nobody controls it there's no
back doors um and you can repeat that
example again you know across lots of
things in web 3 and another example
would be you you could imagine
an internet computer aii smart contract
that audits solidity you know solidity
defi contracts on ethereum and if it
sees that you know there are no bugs uh
there are no back doors or other SEC
security flaws you know kite marks them
and says hey this um AUM smart contract
is safe to use but again like you know
unless it's autonomous um how could you
trust that kite Mark for example if I
personally ran that Ai and I could
update it well I I could have it kite
mark my own malicious solidity smart
contracts on ethereum to steal
everyone's ether or something so um you
know autonomies the autonomy property is
going to be very very important within
web 3 all right so that Golden Triangle
between tamper proove Unstoppable
autonomous um of course you've done a
number of demos fairly recently that
demonstrated sort of the AI and smart
contract capabilities on the internet
computer specifically the most recent
one focused specific spefically on
facial recognition can you maybe tell me
a bit more about that yeah so uh the
reason we we chose to do a facial
recognition demo um is it sort of brings
home quite how powerful these AI smart
contracts are um firstly like you can
actually um have one doing facial
recognition with practical performance
right um
and we we wanted to do that partly
because we wanted to show how how how
far we've
Advanced um you know the performance of
AI smart contract so when we did the now
when we did the facial recognition demo
um it was running probably like almost
10 times faster than the first AI smart
contract demo which had only been done
um a few months before and um that
reflected that just a huge amount of
work that's been done behind the scenes
a definity you know working away making
improvements uh adding simmed thing
called simmed instructions which allow
multiple instructions to be executed in
parallel to the execution environment
and you know proposing those updates to
the network nervous system the Dow that
runs the internet computer and getting
them into the
network and uh you I wanted people to
see uh the results of of all that work
um but as it turns out um you know there
are tons of app ation of uh smart you
know facial recognition by smart
contracts and um you know a lot of
people are now playing with it and some
you know have have reached out to us for
support and guidance on on how how it
canus and things they should do so uh
you know that's been a huge success
story ni some exciting things in store
now of
course I would be Miss if I didn't ask I
think everyone wants to see large
language models on the blockchain
where are we on that um yeah I mean I've
said many times you're going to be able
to have a chat with with with the
blockchain um it's coming in in fact
there are very cut down large language
models uh on the internet computer um
already M um but you know we're focused
on getting like really sophisticated
large language models like llama 3 onto
um the internet computer so the primary
current limitation um is that uh the
internet computer execution environment
um runs small contracts that can have a
maximum of 4 gigabyte
of persistent main memory and that's
because it's using 32-bit WM um you know
a bit like Windows 95 was 32 bit back in
the day I remember
cloy so um uh soon uh we're going to put
proposals into the net nervous system
that will move the internet computer to
64-bit wasm and that will make it
possible to increase um the amount of
persistent main memory that smart
contracts have as needed um and was at a
hoping we can um you know increase it
something like 15 gig which will enable
um you to fit like you know for example
a 78 gab distillation of of laa 3 in
into a smart contract which will be
absolutely Mega um because that's a very
sophisticated large language model um so
obviously there's a lot of work behind
the scenes uh you know defini is um you
know a big player in in the wasm web
assembly ecosystem actually the um one
of the you know first few team members
of guy Andreas rosberg was a co-inventor
of um web assembly and you know that
helps um it it's also the case that um
you know increasing the amount of u
persistant M memory that small contracts
have requires a lot of other protocol um
updates and improvements and so you know
defini is working on that we'll put that
into the network nervous system too um
it's it's a non-trivial thing but but
we're going to get there um and we're
going to be able to run large language
models on on the internet computer um
and once we've done that I think the the
the next um big Master for AI will be
gyron which which involves um getting
gpus onto no machines um which will take
us a whole way further with respect to
Performance and efficiency or allbe it
you know the reason that you run AI as a
SM contract isn't isn't because it's the
most efficient way of running an AI
right the reason you do that is because
you want it to be T proof you want it to
be unstoppable uh and in the case of a
wallet or something like that you want
it to be
autonomous all right and to finish us up
there's been a lot of chatter on X
largely initiated by you regarding
something other than AI smart contracts
sort of another Advance if you want to
call it that that the internet uh
computer has in the pipeline it's been
teased I'm going to ask cheely can you
speak in your cryptic ways about that a
bit well you know I can't tell you what
it is I mean um we're aiming to get this
out in in early September um in beta
form but people will be able to use it
and you know I'm itching to talk about
it I'm in itching to show it to people
I'm so excited and it's it's got me you
know probably more excited than uh
anything else for a very long time um
and you know running uh AI on on
blockchain is like the first big advance
um the internet computer delivered uh in
this space with respect to AI but
there's another big Advance coming and
when you see it um you realize that the
future of tech is going to be completely
different um and it's a real game
changer I and you know what's really
cool about this thing is it crystallizes
so much of the work that we've done over
years and years um creating this like
novel uh third generation blockchain
which hosts this secure Unstoppable
autonomous um serverless code where you
can literally build everything end to
end um on on this decentralized
network um and it's something again that
the internet computer can do uniquely So
currently as you know uh only the
internet computer blockchain can run AI
there's lots of blockchains do like
tokens for AI and all this kind of stuff
and there's only one blockchain that can
run AI has a smallart contract on chain
and that's the internet computer um and
this is going to be a bit like that you
know it's it's it's something that only
the internet computer can do um and I
think it shows you know closes the loop
and and shows you how tightly woven AI
is going to be with with the future of
tech and it's one of those things that
you look at and you just go wow um this
this is incredible this is a game
changer but people will have to wait I
mean I I'm going to have to wait too
because I'm desperate to talk about it
and show people and get discussions
going but but it's not not not a lot
long now right like less than five weeks
four and a half weeks I mean consider
yourselves teased H I imagine people are
spping their calendars right now I mean
actually I I I I I canceled half my
holiday but there me it be on holiday
and the reason I did that is to make
sure that this thing stays all schedule
and get this out and we get it out so it
it's that important um I'm super excited
you know I'm just desperate to share
with people but it'll have to wait it's
not long now what a fantastic note to
end on I think we can wrap it up with
that D thanks for taking the time thank
