English: Alice Kinney & Boris Cadena.
I learned from my parents
and grandparents
about medicinal plants
Guayusa is good
to drink
it gives you energy and keeps you awake
it helps with pain
first you have to drink Guayusa and then the Chicha
and later do the activities
like pottery and fiber-work
to make artesinal goods
It is ready, the shape is in place
after placing the shapes it must be put in the kiln
with a bambu coil
It must sit for 20 minutues under the fire
this is a
tree sap
in Kichwa “cirquillo”
this makes it shine like a varnish
this knowledge
are almost lost in their entirety
This is why we want
we want to recover them.
because our children should know
what ancestry our grandparents left us
the art is being lost
Our culture
because it is our tradition
that our grandparents taught us
but professors do not teach about medicinal plants,
it is totally lost in this place
but I´m
working, teaching my children
and my husband
I cook, I prepare and I drink
I provide beverages of medicinal plants to my children and we're fine
with medicinal plants
The Amazon Regional University of IKIAM
It is a newly created university
It's a university
which is located in the Napo province
in the Ecuadorian Amazon
and therefore, it has a focus on analysis
an emphasis on life sciences and earth sciences
This is why the first majors that opened
were: water sciences
geosciences, biotechnology
Also, the ecosystem major
the focus, as I said, was centered around
the conservation of biodiversity
but also around the use of biological resources
what we have available
and that is done
basically from research
research, but that also intends to cover
other fields of knowledge
in this sense, the pedagogical model
that we have in the university
what it does is to involve students from the first semester
in active participation, in research projects
in the first phases what the acquire
are methodological tools
and then
The students are directly involved
with problems and projects
that has to do with our surroundings
with the ecosystem that we have around the university
and for that it is crucial
the location that we have
at the foot of the biological reserve
Colonso Chalupas
at the beginning of the Amazonian flat
which guarantees that we are in a location
of a great biodiversity
of a biological diversity
As for what it has to do with the relationship
of the University
with the communities that surround us
with communities and nationalities that surround us
IKIAM's work aims to -
on one hand
solve a series of problems that exist in the communities
So that we can develop
work in water science
or on issues of agricultural production
and what IKIAM does is
motivated by a series of archaeological discoveries
of archaeological remains on their own
University campus
an exercise to recover the practices
of pottery production
with whom?
with indigenous communities
which are precisely those who
formerly exercised this work
And this
allows us to join together
two types of work
On one hand, scientific work
with the archaeological part
the recovery of knowledge of manufacturing methods
but also
this other more social part
and cultural
And, therefore, the incorporation of cultural elements
that are also part of the education of our students
The AYAHUASCA is also good
Do you have a pain?
and you take AYAHUASCA
and the bugs die too
as evil spirits
you can observe and give the cleaning
Leaving you with good energy
We are located here on the Isla Trinitaria
in the Nigeria sector
we are part of two organizations
one is progressive women
this organization has been in the community for 17 years
and we work to fight for and protect
The rights of abused women
for the economic independence of the spouse
family and domestic violence
or gender violence
here in the community it is extremely high
but
we also understand that
the problem of violence, despite being there
and that we live it day by day
We cannot complain anymore, we had to find a solution
and as we understood that was the issue of economic dependence
We decided to become entrepreneurial women
make our hands an art
the partners that know how to wash, wash
those who know how to cook, cook
those who know how to make crafts
with their hands, make them
those who know how to make costumes, make them
those who know how to make jewelery, make them
and so
each one of those things was becoming a company
Nigeria is a community
where almost 90% are Afro-Ecuadorians
Judged for being Afro in this racist country
like a red zone community
let's do things
outside
that they know us
and let them know that Afro-Ecuadorians are here
we have culture
and with that culture, as an afro people, we can do a million things
make it known to the whole world
for the Afro-Ecuadorian people
Art
Has always been a resistance issue
It has allowed us to resist
in the transatlantic slavery era
remember
that history
talks about when
African descent people or Africans
they were enslaved
they were enslaved
and every village spoke a language
then they could not
communicate to plan their freedom
So what was it that led them to come together and understand that they were all slaves?
it was art
and it was
The discovery that they had the same sound
and they knew that a village played the Bombo drum
in the other too
that in the end it was not called Bombo, it had another name
but nevertheless
it was the sound that identified them
that was an art
and that was the resistance
Then, when it started
the process, in the framework
under the conditions of slavery
the only thing that kept them alive
was the sound of freedom
That is why art for us
always came about
in the resistance of the Afro-descendant people
My name is Rosaura
I am 10 years old
I study in
Isabel Herrería
I feel joyful
I feel happy
that my house is more and more beautiful each day
and every day my family becomes closer
we still love each other
and still every day the love
in our community it is growing
For us the art that they have us do in school
is to paint
trim
dance
jump
listen to music
make dances
do all those things
What my friends have told me about art
Is that there are some that
sometimes do not like it
there are others who do like it
others who get a little angry
art for me
is joy
It’s love
it's peace
It is harmony to my heart
I have peace
and I always feel better
because I like to dance
I like to dance
I like to sing
I like to help people who are sick
I have a book of medicinal plants
which are plants for the bones
I hold onto that book
just in case there’s a sick person
I already have it and I can help that person with something
For jealousy which remedy can be that
send a group of friends to the other
to stop being jealous
It is a book of medicines
this book I use it for
helping people
To heal people
and keep going
so that they do not decay
and so they are always energetic and never sick
this is a book that helps me
to continue on
to continue
telling people the medicines they have to use
to be healed
and to keep going
here we also have
the lemon leaf
the lemon leaf helps us to
Heal stomachaches
all pain that you have around the stomach
This helps
It deflates any belly pain that you have
with all that these plants help us
I wonder
anyone could ask herself
the future is not positive
the future of Afro-Ecuadorian youth
it's not pretty
It’s not painted to say
in Ecuador
in 2030 we are going to
have an afrodescendant president
that's a lie
because we do not even have access to the university right now
we still do not see ourselves included in the curriculum
we are not yet in the university to
prepare ourselves and become president
to be a minister
not yet
that has been part of the resistance too
then for the afro people
dance
marimba
playing instruments
they have not been able to see that Afro-Ecuadorians
do many more things
and that we have contributed to this country with many other things
A lot of things
we still do not appear in the
School books
with the contributions we have made
we still do not appear in the monuments
and there are thousands
of monuments in Ecuador
there are still no leaders
that is also necessary
that they appear so that we feel
as an afro people
that we are being recognized
there is still no street
the name of a street, out of many Afros, Ecuadorians
who died in the struggle for this country
but how strange
that slavers’ names do appear on the streets.
any street
Slaver owners that we do not even know
appear with names
but the names do not appear
of the Afros
The University of the Arts
it was created
in a collective
march
the creation of spaces like these
there are not many
but there are some in the world
and not only in Latin America
There are 4 or 5 projects
relatively similar in Europe
in Asia
in USA
anyway
the creation of spaces like these
has to give us hope
it has to give us
enough arguments
to believe in the future
and that is important
Do not let us be hopeless
that, if we achieve it
we will have to some extent fulfilled the future generations
without that there would not be
Education
higher education in the twentieth century was
essentially conservative
that you have to know it
higher education
of the 21st century has to transcend that conservatism
How is that conservatism given?
it is given
in concrete facts, for example
the twentieth century, when finished, designed universities
with corridors
Closed
which may be very good for some
To develop some purposes
hence
for us work
with the outside of the university
with the activists, with the artists
with the girls, with the boys
that are outside the university
for us they constitute
an antidote to that conservatism
and constitute
also, and more important still
an inspiration source and therefore
knowledge for the development of the
Educational practice
the educational base
is the work with the communities
this university rides between the 20th century and the 21st century
in terms of their educational practices
and specifically within their syllabi
Brought from the twentieth century
By the disciplines
are inspired by those
fields of cultural practices
therefore, it has
the visual arts, theater, dance
music
as a core part of its project
but also
Embraces literature
you have to remember that
in some
spaces of artistic education
Literature is not considered
as an artistic discipline
at the Arts University
literature is
in the core of the project
And this university
Is in the 21st century
and to be in the 21st century
alludes to interdisciplinary dialogue
we believe
that the present and the future
are related to
the dialogue
in creation
between different disciplines
that's why it's fundamental
that students, teachers
the projects
create networks
create complex spaces
Among themselves
and then there is a third element
which is trans-disciplinary
that means
that we are not here to be accountable
of a specific question
but to account for processes
and that's why this university
is necessary
and important
looking towards what we do not yet know
we always say that art
Creates the future of the world and design
I grew up in the middle of 2 passions
one passion was music
the art of my family
my grandmothers, my grandparents, my dad
my uncles play music
and since a very little girl
I started to appreciate
the Ecuadorian rhythms
I grew up in the middle of all that expression
of dance
and also music
that was related to
sports and music
They are like two brothers or friends who helped me grow
as a human being
to have in balance
Mind and body
to me art
and sports
together is a therapy
The National University of Education, of Ecuador
Is a university
created for training the teachers
that are required in the 21st century
it makes sense when
we enter
to look at the relationship between
art and interculturality
we use that creativity
that 21st century new teachers
requiere
but because today more than ever
we have to go
toward
new records, new clues
because the world changed
without art
this commitment to the future
is impossible
to be able to train teachers
to change within the change
those teachers
will be constantly challenged
in education
by the construction of the new
and for the construction of the new
in terms of art
it seems to me that
it is of fundamental relevance
the UNAE pedagogical model
It answers the question of
How should the 21st century teacher be?
and those definitions and those answers
which
allow us to understand
the action plans
the hirings
the types of practices
that are here of community outreach
it's a bet
to the future
from the present
and that generates a tension
with the past of course
because it implies a break
with what has been done
and better than
that novelty
the resignificance
Latin America
from interculturality
the art that is in everything
that allows us
to recreate ourselves with nature and its beauty
with the rivers
with musical expressions
with the bodies
with the way of understanding the beautiful
and its varied expressions
with the people’s emotions
from popular expressions
normally these lines of fine arts
have labeled them as barbarous expressions
that interculturality
is what can
Prepare us, from the artistic point of view
to be creative in a changing world
Art is lost in education
How to know all these artistic languages that have developed in the time dynamics?
art in Ecuador arises
when the first nomadic men arrived in Ecuador
we are talking about a paleolithic
when they used the arrowheads, the sticks
and they generated rhythms
and art has been developing
because later new musical instruments were created
Percussion instruments, wind instruments
many flutes, lots
Out of bones, out of stones
Ceramic ones
later metals came about
and that too
gave
origin to new musical instruments
but behind those musical instruments
there are many meanings that people want to convey
from a sea snail
there are many codes behind that
there are elements that we must understand
to understand that people
when we talk about interculturality
in Ecuador
we have to understand those ways of thinking
that gave origin to those ways of expressing themselves
and those aesthetic forms
and those artistic forms
how they express themselves
behind that there is a lot to learn about the history
of Ecuadorian art
Interculturality
means
in this case for us
is the coexistence
between two or more cultures
Living-together, in which sense?
To share
knowledge, to share wisdom
share
learning situations
here
when we have visitors
we try to make an afternoon
of talking
sharing
life itself
their coexistence, their family
how they live
everyone will feel good
because of what is shared
and they share what they know
many times with what you have
It can even be material
and in that sense there is a balance
and now fundamentally we have the Inti Raymi
which is the celebration
in honor of the Inti
the father sun
It is a celebration
Basically of gratitude
Good day, family
we are all brothers
here in the spirit
really happy at heart
true heart
with all the emotion to give thanks
for the harvest that we have this year
nice to see that the harvests have been bigger every time
that every time we get
more brothers, more family
more people who really love the land
love the sun
Love the water
Love the wind
Thanks to the harvest in the sense of
The triumph of the people
for having achieved their goal
in other words
maybe their studies
maybe they completed a project
a venture
it's fair to celebrate
but also
on a personal level, if they managed to overcome their problems
their adverse situations
with a whole process of
cleaning, purification
a whole process of
internalization
then, there is someone who has overcome all their situations, he or she is balanced
then they have to celebrate on June 21
On the day of the Inti Raymi
To give gratitude to everything
to all the energies
with the presence and greater connection to the sun
with father sun, with yaya inti
Art is lost
in education
and then we have a great challenge
and that challenge is to dabble
in those syllabi
How are they? How are they rooted?
and from our perspective it has been to turn it around
to this syllabus proposal
In which
we have to comprehend, understand
have sensitivity
because that's another way of making art
the understanding of these artistic languages
that represent each of the peoples and nationalities
that represent us as a diverse Ecuador
but it is important that we learn to value
what we have, who we are, where we come from
to know where we are going
and the field of art is wonderful
the field of art has colors that represent it
it has designs that represent it
It has shapes
that all this is attached
and it has an impressive wealth
to those worldviews
that are represented in their cosmo-existences
incredible to feel Ecuadorian.
Art is being lost in education
in general terms
However, I think that from IKIAM we are making an effort
with some of the initiatives to precisely incorporate
not only artistic expressions
or art understood as an expression, as a product
but even
in a conceptual way
of how to understand the reality
at the end
what an artist does
is to translate into some kind of production
observation, which is what scientists do
and many times scientists
put aside that creativity
which science also has
we focus too much on already established methodologies
and we forget
The childish character
of curiosity that the scientist has to have
and curiosity
Joined to creativity
is what can bring us better results
then
In summary, I think the combination
that we have in this university, and in this framework in which we have
about scientific knowledge on one hand
but on the other hand
of experiences that are very interesting to analyze
and the contribution that creativity can make in general terms
they make the general knowledge of the university much richer
Art is lost in education
that's obvious
twentieth century education
evicted sensitive knowledge
The sensitive thinking, the sensitive making
were evicted
for the benefit of
a modern
knowledge
articulate
supposedly
effective
the sensible thing would not be effective
the creation of this university
is the opportunity
to recover
the need
to recover the desire
to recover the passion
to recover the pragmatism of sensible thinking
we have
the obligation to change the world
as we know it
if we do not change the paradigm
If we do not transform our way of thinking and feeling
what we will have left to the next generations
is a serious subsistence problem
the creation of this university
In the background
is going to be accountable for that
we think that the university of the arts of Ecuador
is a fundamental laboratory
to inspire the whole system of basic and secondary education
because
we hope that at the public and private levels
and in the community
through
the creation of this university
and of all the experiences that can be done in the field of the sensitive and emotional
the education system transforms
It transforms itself
and incorporates, re-incorporates
The arts, the sensitive side
within its programs
Three hours
of soft skill building is not enough
at the basic and middle education levels
everything has to be thought
from the sensitive side
because that is the deepest
condition of the human being
The human kind
has changed
in these last 200 years
much more than in the last 5000 years
where there is a written record
of history, that the next 50 years
will change much more
that in the last 5000 years
this tells us that the change
is fundamental
in the way
In which human kind is going to evolve
when we think about the National University of Education
we have to see it also from the transformation
and from the change
in a certain way there is a paradox in this university
we bet on the future
but recovering
experiences, models
knowledge of the past
that are fundamental to face the future
that is the mission
and that is the vision of the university
a vision that would allow
Or rather that it has
an important relevance for Ecuador
that has an echo in Latin America
and resonance in Latin America because
almost every country
in Latin America and the Caribbean have
national education universities
that are also devoted to teacher training
and what we have done, is that this university
grows and develops
with those other experiences
It feeds itself
and borrowing from Latin American sources
but with the global perspective
Which is
that the university has
windows
to the world
that it does not enclose itself
Why was art abandoned?
because it was considered
To be part of free time
it's a school
optionally
the students could
do plays
or they could dance
for a national holiday
for the local celebrations
but it was not part
of learning
art was not implemented
directly
as a new way of understanding human kind
that's why I think that
To return
to rethink
and to find out how we define ourselves
art in education
is to
redefine, to dream
and to create
a new education
with an education
In which we not only work the kids' brains
let's not just stay in formulas
but also in fundamental
expressions and emotions
which are key to the formation and development
of the human -
of something human
that cannot stay isolated
With good intention, but
in feeling good too
in the way we relate
to those around us; similar and different
