the chair how you doing yeah great thank

you mate yeah good good good mate so

what's the plan what are we doing so

today basically I would like to keep the

hair flowing back but tidy it up around

the hairline and on the top it's really

long so okay if I can yeah have a bit

more volume in the curtains and scissor

cut the back and sides okay but TI It Up

along here okay okay so when you say TI

up around the hairline where do you mean

I just mean having it like sharp and

sharp and straight on the side BS okay

what about like obviously on the ears

though like do you want that cut off the

ear as well uh no the ears ears are all

right it's just mostly mostly the side

intentional you know okay yeah no

worries yeah cool um and what are we

doing with the back through so the back

I like I like it I just want it slightly

bit closer in but with a bit of the um

the flow so because the hairline grows

upwards you need to leave more length in

the hairline for it to sit down so I'll

take it at a touch as high as I can but

I don't know whether I'm going to be

able to get away with too much cuz it

looks quite fresh I mean when was your

last take February February was it it

was very heavily cut in though cuz

there's loads of still quite a lot of

layers still quite apparent in this as

well okay all right cool um in terms of

volume at the top uh losing length will

help that massively and obviously

applying heat that helps as well when

you put heat in there that get more

volume um product Choice as well for

volume that always helps too so using a

uh maybe more of like guess a base like

a prep lotion or something like that

would work better than um just obviously

leaving it to dry natur you're not going

to get any volume if you leave to try

natur it will just gravity will just

pull it down so are are you prepared to

do them things are you

prol but if that's what you want to go

for I feel like you you're probably

going to you're probably struggling for

flow because of the undercut it's very

heavily undercut at the moment so you're

not going to see much flow cuz there's

just two longer strands on the top flow

comes from separation in the movement

that you cut in so if you want more flow

and more movement got to take some

layers shorter to make that sit in so I

think in terms of the top I mean if you

got a length in mind you want you want

to take it down to or yeah I've got

photos actually oh right okay that's um

you see what it's like it's quite short

but it's at the front where it's coming

down yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that that

would be even better yeah to be honest

80s that isn't it yeah I kind of wanted

it with the what I've got going on at

the size and back at the minute bit

different that okay that makes more when

you say when you saying like Center than

the curtains I was thinking 90s no is oh

that changes everything then right well

should that first yeah well I mean no

sometimes that's why photos are so like

you're a great example of why photos

were cuz you can't explain something

just show me a photo it's the easiest

thing in the world the thing is with

that is that there wasn't as much flow

in the 80s it was all more like one

length do you want to modernize that a

little bit more yes I would I'd try that

okay okay cuz I feel like if it was cuz

if you look at a lot of this like the

70s and the 80s here they look as they

we were picked off a off a off a

mannequin and placed on they're very

perfect and PR and you know what I mean

and I feel like if you cut flow into it

that's the opposite cuz that's more you

know what I mean so I feel like maybe it

might be worth I think what we can try

and do is is incorporate the sorts of

80s where it's like on the ear on the

neck that kind of like you know it was

kind of it was still very much heavy on

the sides and the back it was almost

like it was slightly mulles almost and

then with the top yet cut the top

shorter I think I think going shter

would change the whole look so I feel

like maybe if we do that as the as a

kind of exterior of the look so when

someone's looking at you they see the

kind of EX you see the silhouett but

then obviously as you look closer to the

haircut you see the movement I think

that'll probably be a good twist cool

yeah yeah all right yeah leave it to me

don't choose a length cuz I think I

might need to pick a length for you all

right all right is that all right but

you show me a picture there though I

know I know the shape you're going for

yeah would you like see it again or you

no no no I my brain works I just need to

see it once and I'm done then it's all

good it's up here somewhere mate I

forget shopping lists and I forget what

I forget what I have for breakfast but

you show me a photo I'll remember it all

the whole hour so no it's all good man

it's all good I I know where you're

trying to go with it so yeah cool we'll

just we'll just use that as a good bit

well let's get this washed in and then

we'll we'll get started all right okay

um shampoo and conditioned um James's

here now we're going to cut this into

the shape so I'm so glad that we had

that consultation at the start and the

way and the way it ended because it

turned out very different because when

James originally said he wants to kind

of tie up the sideburns and kind of give

more volume in in the curtains I

instantly went straight to 90s right

that that was my my go-to but then when

he showed me a photo it was more 80s

very different

and they approach to it different well

so with curtain I would never normally

go as short as I would obviously would

do for like an 80s I mean you still have

the curtains effect but you would have a

bit more length in there but I think

based on what we've what we're doing

today it is going to be a slightly

different different finish so if anyone

is like say you don't really know how to

explain what you want to do or how you

cut is then what you do is just get some

photos photo references are the easiest

thing like I use Pinterest all the time

Pinterest is great because you can see

multiple sort of angles of the haircut

after time as well especially if it's

like a celebrity or someone like that

you you know if you you type in like say

Brad Pit in a film you'll see so many

different camera angles of them with

that same haircut that it can sometimes

change your your thought process on the

haircut cuz it might not good from the

side it might only look good from the

front go on to Pinterest and just create

a little bit a little move board and

then keep that for your your stylist

wherever you going and see but starting

with this horseshoe section focus on the

back ins sides cuz again what we need to

do is add in movement or I # flow right

nice buzz word for it but essentially

what it is is movement right I'm a big

fan of Buzz words because it makes it

makes life a lot easier to explain um

but just for anyone who wants to know

what flow is it's just movement and

separation all right so if if say you go

and see someone they don't know what

flow means you've got another example to

use all right you need to keep the

length over the ears and on the neck

that's what we need to keep the rest of

it can get taken down though okay cuz

that's what creates that longer effect

it's it's the perimeter it's here that's

what creates the effect going to take

this I'm going to work on a diagonal Ang

I'm not going to do sort of cross

graduation cuz I'm not going to graduate

this from short to Long right I'm just

going to be working across like this cuz

I want to encourage the hair to go back

and touch more I want to maintain a nice

bit length cuz don't forget we're going

short at the top so I want to start

taking some length down to match like so

and I need this to blend into the here

okay so I need to make this more one

length to create the length down the

bottom cuz that is more of an 8s vibe

there we go that looks like a lot of L

come off there but that is because that

undercut was quite low and it is like I

said before there so many layers in this

it's like very long and very short in

places see how short that bit was to to

that bit but doesn't matter because I

know what I'm doing I know where I'm

going with this I've got my plan of

action I've got me I've got my picture

in my head I know I know I know what the

aim of of the game is right and it's all

about Flow It's All About movement it's

also about trying to create that so of

80s Vibe as well so again keeping the

length over the years is a thing that's

going to create the length to it and

you'll see what I mean in a

minute so that still keeps length

sitting through there like that right

but then this is going to encourage that

movement so all that length is

unnecessary for what the look that

Jamber is going for completely

unnecessary

so have you grown this out from a a

different look than James is this is

this sort of like on a bit of a growout

at the moment or yeah yeah okay it was

grown out

from originally it was a low taper and

oh wow yeah it's it's

grown I think yeah since February oh

nice no it's a really good blank canvas

actually cuz again all this length that

you've got here now isn't actually

benefiting the look whatsoever because

of what you're trying to go for so by

taking the length down maintain the

length where it needs to be you'll see

the shape so much better and it will be

more it be a bit of a Twist on the on

the kind of classic 80s with the twist

of like the the sort of modern sort of

um you know movement flow kind of

separation and stuff like that what

you'll find is that it'll sit really

nicely back for you and you'll see so I

think the separation in yours is going

to come from as you run your hands

through and the section pattern that I'm

doing now that's going to create more of

that flow that we're looking for I kind

of shape there like that you see as you

run your fingers to it you see in all

separation coming through there on the

here so I'm going to start from that

point there and then W that up here cuz

don't forget we are taking the top

shorter that's going to graduate lovely

into the sides pulling it straight out

from the point of

reference I was cross graduating this

I'll be pulling this down to match up to

my shest length but I'm not I'm coming

straight

out you see I always have my reference

at the top there I'm trying to make out

why why this been so long here cuz the

ears and the Nae AR so I'm just trying

to work out why that now has become the

same length so I'm not trying not really

sure what's going there but I can't

really let that bother me because I know

what I'm doing I'm sticking to my my

plan of action I'm sticking to the

reference and I know where I'm going

with it and I've got my guides so I

don't really need to worry about that

but just show your's curiosity I know

that can happen sometimes when you're

doing a haircut and you see a load of

length and you think oh God why is that

there and you don't know why

so just stick to your stick to your guns

you know what you're going with it you

know where you're going you know what

you're trying to achieve and try and

stick to it very easy to get sort of

persuaded not to when you see the old

haircut thinking oh no was that meant to

be there was I meant to leave that there

just let your guns there we go that

point there that's what we work

into so where did the uh inspiration for

the haircut come from then James well

with this this one right here it's um I

just keep seeing like retro reals on

Instagram I thought oh I want my hair to

look like that oh cool and also like

when I was growing out just love like

Alex Turner and slicking it back like

that yeah yeah same with the side so

well he was more like a teddy boy one he

went for that kind of Teddy boy finish

didn't he which is uh yeah that's a cool

look man it's something like I've always

like wanted but it's so impractical I

find when it's like I did go for that

cut a couple years ago and it just it's

great for the first week and then I

realized I've got to maintain this like

but also not a rock star right exactly

so when you've got someone doing your

hair for you all the time cuz that's

probably what they'll have done when

they're working on a yeah on a different

on like a show or something like that

they'll um they'll have someone St on

the hair for them so but I mean I would

love to see what Alex T looks like going

out to the shop you know with that

haircut he probably he probably puts a

hat on you know cuz it is it's a really

hard one to It's A Hard One to style it

takes a lot of effort a lot of blow

drying as well which people don't think

it does it's not just a simple Pomade

job and go it's a lot more than that

that's what I mean sometimes like the

the expectation of a haircut can can be

quite different to the reality of it you

know takes a bit more time a bit more

effort to do like all I need from you is

a bit of heat that's all I need you to

do and we'll be fine you know with the

whole the whole look will work cuz it's

cut so heavily into a shape now the

difference of these shapes com compared

to say like more of a a more modern

curtains for example is that the 80s

hairstyles were very heavily cut in

right and I mean everything was like

perfectly pred and like not a hair of

place if you think about it you know not

a hair out of place and it's like all

like bit length over the ears bit of

length on the neck but like absolutely

perfect and I think that's the that's

the thing we've got to we got to try and

maintain is that Perfection to it you

know so I'm just working up the middle

now just to make

sure match that Center

Point to either

side I'm going to tie the side bends up

now so this is going to give that modern

take very low down so we're still

keeping hair on the ear so I want that

hair to stay there like

that around here as well just trying to

tie up this neck here as well just this

little bits

here they're not contributing anything

to the look anything they're making the

look harder to manage so we can get rid

of

that now what I've got is full control

over how the neck line

Falls I feel like this here is a really

good example for anyone

watching of the placement of the length

and what it can create so you think

about when James sat down he had loads

of like sporadic long like long sections

through the back and

I don't think they would contributing to

anything really to to the look that he

was going for and obviously he's got

that very harsh heavy undercut on top as

well whereas I think if you look at the

back now that looks so much more balanc

but you can see there's loads of length

in there here but I haven't touched

anything around the perimeter so more

than having to keep all this length

through here which is just making his

life more difficult I've made it a lot

more easier by leaving the placement of

length where it needs to be along that

bottom but I can take some up but you

still want to leave a bit of length in

there just to make sure that it all sits

into place

otherwise if you take too much hair off

the nape you lose that kind of 90s thing

so what I'm going to do to make it keep

that stick with that modern Vibe with

the flow and the shape and everything

else is I'm going to take the center of

it up so I'm going to leave someone

sitting through the back here to fill in

this Gap but I'm going to take the

middle of it up cuz I feel like that's

where that's where it drops down there

so I think we take that bit up there

that'll probably sit more imbalance or

what we're trying to

achieve cut that

quite sharp I'm going to bring

everything straight down like

that and make across the neck not around

it

across guide of the that bit there to

match so I would imagine the 80s that

would have been cut very blunt but we

still want to have a bit of a mod Twist

on it as well

now razor

work on this now just to break up the

edges just like that just a little

touch take away that

thickness that

away just pull bits

down just do some sther razor work all

through the back sides don't need it

back's got quite a lot of thickness in

still

there we go just like that now we take

the top down I want this to fall so of

just still into James's eyes okay but as

you can see it falls into his mouth so

we take a little bit of length off so

I'm going to start by working in a

profile section to cut in the shape that

I want to go for right so best way to

get a profile section is do a center

part right down head like so and either

side of the center part is where you do

it so I always do sort of a finger withd

a

side like that all the way down to match

right and then you've got your profile

section s perfectly through there like

the this this will fall into the eyes

just about

here pull this down pull it out just

pull it down see where it needs to drop

so yeah about that that length

there

straight then I for perfectly into the

eye going to work around just giving a

all of a rounded finish to this nice

small sections pull back in following

the shape of the

head my section is mirroring the shape

of of the

head like

that now on this section turn around

this

way take another section this is where

we start to connect into the back so I'm

following the guy from the left hand

side like so I'm working this right in

to the back but again as you can see I'm

pulling out to mirror the head shape

like

so another section next to this in a

profile straight across like that cross

top of the head same finger width apart

from that section I'm do the same thing

again I'm going to use this center part

now as the guide

all I needs a guide remember so as long

as the section here is perfectly

straight the rest is

okay

out so there we go now final second on

this side is into the sides pick it up

and we connect into the

sides with this

okay guides from every angle before it

on top of it and from underneath

it all the way around

is going to be the drop into the sides

matching the placement of where the

section is on that round of the head and

also the angle that I'm pulling straight

really top maybe the size are a bit

shorter than the back was kind of it

almost like I said it almost looked like

you picked up a piece of hair and put it

on the top you know it's very very

almost the same length and that's the

same thing we're trying to do here so

obviously we're trying to make it all

the same length but then with the twist

of the flow that we're talking about

that 90s kind of flow um you see the

hair moving about and separating and St

that that's the thing you want to try

and get with that that same sort of

finish get some volume in there

smoothness and then flow as well we got

our

guide like so bring that all the way

around going have a little corner here

that we take

off just like

that I love the beauty of this when

you're talking through a haircut because

when it happens you know you're on the

right track so when I say say there

you're going to see a point you're going

to see this you're going to see that

it's always nice when it does happen cuz

I know what I'm talking about but there

is that element at doubt sometimes think

is this actually is still working is

this actually still going work I even

surprise myself sometimes when it still

does there is the shape that's cut in

now the majority of this hairstyle now

is dressing okay that's what we're doing

volume and that's kind of bit so I'm put

the volume either side of the center

don't want The Fringe to be put too

short to for that right so blow dry some

of this in it's a base product so this

is Heap Setter and need to get volume

from this as well okay s this all the

way through the

so so medium speed High heat you dry it

from the bottom up into the top like

this and then you go back

it now is where you see the flow you

also see that very 80s effect where it's

still sitting and C in the a modern

teeth on a classic okay the back we wrap

the brush around it like

this we drive this all out and this is

where we started building up so volume

comes from before The Fringe okay you

start building that volume up so all

balances it up wrap it in you ever

ridden a motor bike before or a

moped rev and go yeah once yeah rev it

pull off and go okay in rev off and go

okay that's the first fo you do at the

roof that right then you do throw dry

air over to one side like this wrap your

brush around so you're blow dying out

the growth pattern that will just

basically blow Drive in so as that falls

that'll fall in like a a wave

okay use your

fingers go

back and there is your volume

in okay now key to this volume is making

sure you set it okay set cold that

down so the last thing I'm going to do

now is just finish off with some point

on okay just to break up them straighter

finishes so head over towards me this

and just cut in to the side here like

there where that connection point

was like

just move my scissor around thin out

taking away the

bluntness also emphasizing a bit of that

flow as all that bit of

movement same this

side just let that fall into this is a

closing

do you want like a a sort of slick

finish do you want a more natural finish

do you want how what would you PR like

shiny or more matte um kind of more

matte if possible kind of like the image

where it was going back but there was a

strand coming down a little bit of clay

put a little bit in the back of my hand

and use after if we need to so pie size

mountain in the pal of your hand and we

wait this from this side first okay make

sure you warm up the clay

and you we this through so this isn't

going to change the color of your hair

whatso all it's going to do is bring out

all that flow that we talked about that

separation

right this into the

back right into the

top going to go the drop just like

that me took that around the ear like

elements of the 80s kind of vibe in

there the longer hair on the side on the

on the years but you didn't need all

that length through here totally

unnecessary because if you taken the top

down you'd have ended up with just like

a big kind of almost like a a roof

effect on the top it would just kind of

sit like that and then shoot right in

which you don't want so I'm going to

take this off you a second I want you to

see it with your clothes on okay cool

right so I'm going to show you this from

every angle now okay so want to start by

you lifting that mirror up to your eye

level I'm going to spin you around so

you can see it from back inside so

there's how the back and EV sits so it

sits just on the collar but then you've

got all of the separation sitting

through the sides you got the clean side

b as well but then there's the shape so

it looks all like it's one length all

the way through yeah and that's like the

kind of it's very like the to you got

more like Tom Cruz look than the other

guy you know you've got that kind of

same hair texture as well that's what

you can see you got volume you got

movement you got cheap but look how much

more that flows into itself nowan and

just keeping that little bit of length

of the neck just that what draws

everything into that more like longer 8s
