Transcripts
uh you are watching the context it is
time for our regular weekly segment AI
[Music]
decoded yes welcome to AI decoded if you
are a regular viewer of this program
you'll know by now that each week we
devote half an hour every Thursday to
the extraordinary advances in artificial
intelligence and this week we took a
giant step forward with the release of
chat GPT 40 which is significantly
easier to operate it comes with audio
visual and text in real time an always
helpful always available humanlike robot
to interact whenever you like do you
worry about that look how obsessed
people have become with Twitter and
social media what if chat GPT replaces
human interaction what if we become so
obsessed with this new technology that
people would share their special moments
with a computer rather than you like
this man introducing his dog to his AI
companion I want to introduce you to
somebody well hello there cutie what's
your name little sluff ball this is
Bowser well hello Bowser aren't you just
the most adorable little thing yeah look
at you enjoy this is one of his favorite
things to
do oh I can see why look at that Focus
fing balls is serious business for
Bowser yeah maybe no longer man's best
friend let's take a look at how the
papers covered the release of chat GPT
40 The Laughing chatting singing AI so
responsive says the guardian you could
almost forget it's not a sentient being
you could use it as a dating concierge
this week says the mail the founder of
dating out Bumble suggested we use our
customized AI to seek out the perfect
partner or maybe you don't need a
partner if the AI is the super sexy
robot it's coming at you fast but who is
holding the Reigns news this week from
axio that s alman's open AI have shed
three of the doomers the more cautious
members of the board who'd been pushing
the safer and slower approach tonight we
will talk to the author of Human Rights
robot wrongs lawyer Susan algra who has
written extensively about the way AI is
threatening our rights in war sex
publishing and creativity and what we
might do to fight back there were two
triggers uh that SP spurred Susi algra's
uh desire to write this book we will
come to that very shortly but with me uh
in uh the studio tonight is Samir Samir
is here to keep us company thank you
very much for being with us have you use
chat GPT yeah I have and it's pretty
impressive I got to say um so the big
difference is the model understands text
and and uh video sound uh natively so
it's almost like before there was a kind
of like a translator between us and the
model and now that's gone so it's taking
in more information and some of the
things that were lost uh in Translation
are are now native to the model so it's
it's more expressive does he we've
talked before about
whether it becomes it feels like a
sentient being could you have a
relationship with this I think you can
yeah you know and I personally you know
you know me I'm I'm I'm an AI evangelist
and I I think it's it's it's you know I
think it's it's better that this guy is
you know on his uh showing showing the
his AI uh his his dog rather than say
you know necessarily going on Tick Tock
or something and and trying to get
attention like that you know right but
what about what about what he's teaching
it where does that go I I mean is is is
are the pictures that he's
taking uh the things that he says to
this AI model are those being recorded
Ed by chat GPT yeah that's a good
question so they have different tiers so
depending on which tier you're on they
keep your data uh if you're on a free
tier I believe they they can use it to
train their models you can opt out of it
and then if you pay you they don't you
know train your models or if you're a
business user they don't so there
there's there's options there but of
course it's a big question you know
where where is this going what are they
doing with it okay well let me introduce
you to Susie as I say there were there
were two reasons that you you you wrote
this book one was the sudden explosion
of chat GPT which we're talking about
and this narrative that everyone
overnight could be I don't know a
novelist or a painter and then there was
another story about this Belgian man who
took his own life after a six- week
intensive relationship with an AI
chatbot um which which is the alarming
part of this what what is it that most
concerns you about where we're going I
think what really concerns me and this
news this week is really kind of theep
to me of it is what is AI for is AI for
replacing humanity is it for replacing
human connection and if that is what
it's for is that what we really want and
the case that you mentioned about the
Belgian man who really tragically took
his own life earlier this year after
just 6 weeks relationship with a chatbot
which was literally just texting or
writing into a computer it wasn't this
chatting to a sexy flirty chat spot it
was literally just
texting he left behind a widow and two
small children because he believed that
he wanted to be with his AI chatbot and
that she would provide the future to
save us from The Perils of climate
change you know it's really disturbing
to think that people's minds can be
manipulated in that way so quickly
that's difficult to conceive with
something you're having to text to and
it texts back at you but if it's a
conversation with someone who's voice
you can change whose Avatar you can make
to look what like whatever you want you
then you can see why it would become
more addictive absolutely and I was
really quite surprised when I started to
look into it further to find how many
millions of people have signed up to
services to have ai relationships and AI
companions which are effectively just
chatbots with an avatar that you've
designed this ideal person and I think
one of the big problems with it is that
if you insist on having a relationship
with something you've created in this
perfect ideal how are you actually going
to deal with real people who are
actually a bit complicated and maybe
don't do what you want them to do well
I'm glad you asked that because one of
the stories that we've focused on this
week is this this comment from the
Bumble founder uh Whitney walf uh whitne
wolf herd who said that the future of
dating could be filled with AI powered
personas setting each other up to help
women in their search for a connection
so the idea would be that this AI model
would be like a concierge sifting
through all these different profiles to
pick you the perfect partner and I think
that announcement is in one on one hand
a sort of sign that online dating has a
problem that there is definitely that
people are frustrated and not finding
the kind of human connection that they
want through online dating I mean if you
could use AI to filter out inappropriate
messages and block anyone who sends them
maybe that would be fantastic I'm not
quite seeing how
this buiness to me because if you find
the perfect partner you're not on Bumble
You' already got your exactly exactly
but but but but what what we have here
though is another example of Technology
being inserted into people's lives to
replace human connections human
relationships and
interactions why do you think that is
specifically
dangerous to social
control I think it's about corporate
capture
of society of human society
and creating dependence as well I think
making us you know separating us off
from our friends and our loved ones
isolating us effectively and making us
emotionally psychologically and
practically dependent on what is
effectively a business model I think is
really worrying you know what happens if
you switch off the electricity and that
was one of the things with one of the um
companies that run these AI chatbot
relationships replica when they were
having problems with seeing sort of
abuse filtering through the system and
they closed down the possibility for
sexting people were suddenly bereft of
these relationships that they thought
they had which could just be switched
off by a change in the business what
happens is the business goes bankrupt
and people are then left with nothing
sort of been separated off from their
their social environments and I think
that's very worrying what I've always
said with the premise of this program is
that we we we highlight the risks which
are considerable but we also show how it
can be used to great benefit so I want
to show you how chat GPT 40 has been
used to help someone who's blind have a
watch is the king in Residence at the
moment yes it looks like the king is in
Residence right now the Royal Standard
flag is flying above Buckingham Palace
which is the signal that the Monarch is
present how exciting to be there while
the king is home try and tell me exactly
what they're doing right now please um
right now now the Ducks are gently
gliding across the water they're moving
in a fairly relaxed manner not in a
hurry occasionally one of them will dip
its head under the water probably
looking for food and then pop back
up I even know when a taxi is coming
with its orange light on I think I'll
hail it to get
home yes I spotted one just now it's
heading you way on the left side of the
road get ready to wave it
down I mean that's pretty extraordinary
and and it shows how responsive it is
but I I listen to that voice and I just
want to turn to another chapter in your
fascinating book and it's about sex
robots and chat Bots which is which is
where that the dangerous thing comes in
you you you when you look at this this
particular demo that came from chat GPT
this week you can make it dramatic you
can make it serious you can make it
sultry yeah and sexy um and that I think
is where a lot of people might become
concerned I mean are we going to have
young men particularly in bedrooms who
don't interact with one another uh who
lose the ability to communicate well
it's what we're seeing already as I say
even just with the basic chat Bo this is
really just supercharging it um and I
think when you look at use cases like
that that we've just seen you know
that's fantastic but that doesn't mean
that you necessarily need it for
everything all the time everywhere and I
think that's one of the problems we see
with the way AI is being rolled out is
creating dependencies and sort of
creating social phenomena instead of
looking at discrete use cases um and I
think the relationship question really
is problematic and I think this is just
you know as I said looking at where we
are already this I mean in in two years
time it's going to be hugely problematic
there was one other story I did quickly
want to look at before we go to the
break that that is this who's got the
Reigns on this who's holding regulation
within companies because there were
these three figures within open AI who
were known as the doomers they were the
people who saying look we need to test
this we need to exercise great Co
caution Samir and they're out they're
out they they were seen as the drag in a
way on on corporate profit and they're
gone they are yeah yeah so you know it's
it's hard to know what the circumstances
were whether this is Fallout from what
had happened before a few months ago and
they wanted to wait or you know I guess
we'll we'll find out what the because
some of this was mixed up with the idea
of getting s Sam Alman out of the
company I think so when when I look at
this it feels to me like this was
something that they decided a while ago
but they didn't want to do it all at the
same time for the good of the company uh
you know and I understand that some of
them have gone to anthropic which which
is uh more you know has more ethical um
uh safeguards in place and you know for
the does that quickly worry you that
these sort of people are being pushed
out for
profit in a way except I mean I'm a
lawyer so I sort of believe that while
the wheels of Justice turn very slowly
effectively they will provide the guard
rails and that it's not just about
corporations and the people in
corporations to guarantee our future so
I think we're seeing regulators and
courts catching up even with things like
you mentioned earlier about social media
you know things are starting to catch up
it takes a while I don't think it's just
about who's in the corporations it's
also about who's watching the
corporations and regulating the
corporations well I'm glad you said that
because next week uh we are going to
speak to commission investigate in
Brussels and we're going to talk about
rules and regulations also we're going
to focus on some of that uh in the US
Congress as well Susie leer thank you
for coming on tonight the book is human
rights robots wrongs it's quite a good
read you should uh pick up a copy um
after to the break the world in your
pocket the new AI app released just 30
hours ago that can translate any
language in real time on your phone I'll
show you how it works in fact we'll give
you a demo and we will speak to the
creators welcome back let me paint you a
picture you are the creator of a new
product that could be sold in almost any
market around the world but you're
limited by language you don't have an
interpreter but then no one really
really sells your product as well as you
can so what if you could speak to your
new clients maybe a room of clients who
all speak different languages at the
same time in real time and in their
language welcome to
interpre ever found yourself in a
work-related situation where not
everyone is fluent in the same language
[Music]
introducing interpret find now instant
AI powered live translation for
face-to-face Gatherings without the need
for AV Equipment you no longer need to
default to only one language interpr now
instantly unlocks every language with
your phone and is the key to seamless
multilingual communication whether
you're in business meetings guided tours
coaching sessions negotiations and more
once the initial setup is done all you
have to do is share your QR code with
your participants participants scan the
code to access interpret now each
attendee chooses the language they want
to listen read and speak in and just
like that your Gathering is officially
multilingual God how I've needed this
for so long with me is Sven Schumaker
marketing director of interpret and also
here for our demo tonight uh the CEO of
interpre odman Braton thank you for both
coming in so how does it work let's
let's go through how it works Christian
thank you very much it's pleasure to be
here so first of all what are we're
going to be showcasing you tonight is an
Innovative way of how people can
communicate okay we're going to be
introducing interpre now and what
interpre now does is it allows you to
connect in up to in over 6,000 different
language combinations using AI speech
translation and captions at the click of
the button on your mobile phone right so
we're in a meeting correct and uh we're
all going to link together on our mobile
phones what have you got on your phone
show the show your phone to camera
2 right can you see that so there's like
a barcode there which I'm now going to
scan with my normal photo app okay so
then it brings up
interpre type in my name correct yeah so
it says Christian I don't know if you
can see that can you see that it says
Christian phraser so I'm joining joining
uh this uh this group and it's says here
so that there are two functions
basically it says on the left hand side
it says English which is what I'm going
to hear yes and it has English which
will be the text which will appear on my
phone that's your captains this is where
you come ined all right so admond is
going to speak Norwegian because he
speaks Norwegian and I don't and
hopefully we we try all sorts on this
program it never goes right so here goes
nothing but hopefully you're going to
talk and I have a mic on the phone uh
which people should be able to hear all
right so where you go talk to us in
nor thank you so much for having us here
today we are very pleased to present our
new product which is based on a the
technology we have developed in the last
couple of years if you are an
international organization or have
International
guests then you can offer interpretation
in 80 different languages it's very
simple you only need mobile phones and
our simple
application this is I mean come on it's
amazing right then then you let
technology the magic and connect people
be texting in say oh yeah but you can do
this on Google you can t you can speak a
language and it will translate into
another language but the point is you
then have to to share your phone with
someone else right exactly that and that
is the difference with this so everybody
can have their mobile phone you don't
need any special kit and you can have as
many languages in the room as you want
because it's translated into their
language so so I mean what is the
practical application of that explain to
me how it's going to create profit for
businesses smaller businesses
mediumsized businesses who can't afford
an interpreter well great well let's
take a practical solution uh scenario
we're in London we've got the open tour
buses M right with those buses we've got
multiple different cultural aspects of
Tourism that is entering and visiting
London on a daily basis
right with those tour buses they've got
dedicated times for specific languages
based on what translators were available
at what time what we allowing them to do
with interpret fine now is that they can
equip their guests or their tourists
with the interpret Now app regardless of
which language they speak and they'll be
able to listen
here and read so you don't need German
buses on one particular day you can have
a mixture of different languages
therefore you can fill your bus you can
up your profits correct so those 10
buses don't have to necessarily have
time slots equally if you as I said at
the Top If you had a program a product
you wanted to sell you didn't
necessarily speak the language you had
different say you were working for Voda
phone you go to vone in Europe all the
different countries there You' be able
to speak to them in real
time what about
dialect I mean there are so many
different dialects how how how good is
this and does it catch
everything it it's very good I mean it's
better than most people at understanding
accents and
dialects if they speak normal English or
their language if you use very slang
words it might not get it but it's it's
trained on a lot of data and it's
getting better all the time on dialects
in various different we tried it in
Ukrainian today there are 8 different
languages as you say 80 times 80 is over
what 6,000 language Comin over 6,000
language combinations it can do all them
what do you make of this me you say
you're the Evangelist of AI is this is
this what you would take to the altar I
mean I I noticed that the uh the real
time um streaming is really is really
strong you know uh I noticed that um I I
do wonder about how you guys just it's a
question that I face as well how do you
compete with open AFI if they I decides
to do something like this you know
tomorrow question if you're the smaller
player do you get swamped by the big
boys it no we we actually utilize the
technology from the big boys that that's
out there we don't yeah develop our own
core technology and actually the big
boys when they have a corporate
Gathering they're using us at our
technology for their own internal
meetings or for their customers so
is we Embrace this development and we we
develop it for the professional users
it's more of a specific use case right
it's specific but for professional use
cases multilanguage
multilingual where where does this
technology go do you
think well at the rate in AI is
advancing and some of the innovations
that we have we've been producing I
would say the the sky is the limit for
for the technology itself from the
interpre side of things we've definitely
got some more innovations that are
coming out that is really going to
excite the world and Advance our interpr
AI Solutions itself but the technology
itself it's it's it's really going to
evolve into something our feel is going
to be a a human Aid there's a lot of
conversations around this is going to
replace I don't think it's replacing I
think this is aiding taking toy now for
instance this is helping us Bridge the
language barrier in Communications
with multi different people different
cultures and languages it just it just
struck me a lot of our Communications
these days are through um obviously uh
conference sites um through um teams
something like that do you have it
incorporated into those sort of websites
that's where we're coming from so we we
have integrated into 80 different
platform teams zoom and and you name it
so this is more a product just for
Onsite to have in your pocket but we
also have the integration in the online
platforms so yeah definitely I I I set
my Vista very large but I I'm I'm sort
of looking at this thinking the next
time I go to Spain and I need a plumber
I can talk about the technical things
that I can't say you know because a lot
of my language is colloquial and it mean
it revolves around a bar or something
like that but this this you could do
anything with right you can talk to
anybody about literally anything we're
out of time it's some fascinating things
some some extraordinary technology
coming out which we do try and show you
every week on this program Sven hodman
Samir lovely to have your company again
uh on the program we will be back next
week with a look at the rules and the
