Sangha Lodge - CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC Season 7 - Eps.77

play00:27

Good morning Internet, it is 7:50 in  the morning and welcome back to the channel

play00:31

I have been waking up to this view staying right here at the river

play00:39

Welcome here in Central African Republic

play00:42

And if you've watched the last couple of episodes then you know that it was really difficult to get here

play00:48

But I came here for one thing only and that is hopefully what's going to happen today

play00:55

So I'm now getting ready. Uh. I'm going to a very, very special place I don't want to tell you yet where

play01:01

So without further ado, let's go

play01:03

And you know what? Yesterday was the first day that it didn't rain here

play01:09

And the owner of the Sangha Lodge, where I'm staying here

play01:12

He told me that that's usually how the rainy season ends, so it had been raining every single day for the last two weeks

play01:18

at least and then he said normally, it just stops one day it just stops and the dry season begins

play01:26

So.. let's hope that this was actually the last day of rain

play01:32

And that I'm now entering the dry season, that would be great

play01:36

So this is the only way to get to the lodge, how cool is this

play01:41

See Alaska is still standing over there

play01:55

Okay

play01:56

What's your name?

play01:57

Ube - Ube

play01:58

Okay

play01:59

And you?

play02:00

Noraly - Okay

play02:01

So Ube and me are now going to.. - Dzanga Bai - Dzanga Bai

play02:07

Dzanga Bai that's the magical place we're going to the park headquarters first

play02:13

And then I think I'm going to meet some trackers and then uh.. I'm going to do some walking

play02:19

Which is actually I think quite good. I had a really good upper body workout the last couple of days

play02:26

So I'm really looking forward to actually do some walking

play02:31

Hard to believe but it's true

play02:34

We reached the park headquarters

play02:38

This is a guard. You are going with them so I'm just going to make sure there is someone over there

play02:42

Okay great

play02:43

It's very clever to pack your bike - Yeah

play03:04

We have a little problem, oh

play03:30

That was the problem

play03:33

We have a loose hose

play03:44

It's like we're making tea

play03:46

It's just boiling

play03:48

Crazy

play04:05

No

play04:24

Yes!

play04:31

So the car actually made it

play04:34

Really good job. Um, one of the guys had to run to the river five times to catch water

play04:40

To fill up the radiator because everything was a bit overheated

play04:43

But uh.. we have a good.. we have a good team!

play05:03

Okay, we have to cross a little stream here

play05:43

See this is a footprint of elephant.  We keep on seeing footprints

play05:48

So the elephants actually walk here  as well

play05:52

Here there's another footprint

play06:10

Look it's another elephant footprint, look

play06:36

Look, there they are

play06:44

Unbelievable. Look at this

play10:23

How is this for an amazing place, right?

play10:26

This is the best place in the world to see elephants in the wild

play10:31

These are forest elephants which are  different from the elephants that you find in the savanna

play10:38

I believe they have slightly smaller  ears but because normally they live in the

play10:43

forest you barely see them but the elephants actually created this open space themselves

play10:50

They come here every single day. It's absolutely magical, right?

play10:56

Elephant Mom & her tired baby - a short story -

play12:40

We're going again

play12:48

We're now so close to the elephants

play13:15

That was an absolutely amazing experience. At some point I counted 120 elephants

play13:24

All there but many more were coming and going all the time and it was just me

play13:32

And the rangers there. Absolute the  best wildlife experience I have ever had

play13:42

It was just magical. And you could  hear the rumbling of the elephants

play13:50

Footprints

play13:52

And they were chasing  each other and wah

play13:58

What an amazing experience and it was a really hard fight to get here

play14:06

Hear that?

play14:11

It really was a struggle to get here, I have to admit

play14:15

But it was so worth it. It was absolutely worth it

play14:20

Wow

play14:22

I'm kind of on an elephant high right now

play14:46

So this place is called Dzanga Bai and Bai in pygmy language

play14:52

Means clearing in the forest with a water source

play14:55

And the elephants like to come here because the soil is very rich in minerals

play15:01

And they need those minerals as an addition to their normal diet

play15:06

So they dig deep holes to get to the mineral layers and in that way they keep the clearing open all the time

play15:14

But eventually the flies kind of chased me away

play15:18

They were relentless but this forest is just so full of the forest elephant

play15:26

And where we are walking now, I mean you see the footprints

play15:31

Um, I asked them do you ever encounter them here on the walk? And they're like yeah

play15:35

So I'm like, what do you do? And they're like hide behind a tree

play15:41

So yeah

play15:44

We're constantly on the lookout to make sure that we don't encounter an elephant right here

play16:03

Ah here

play16:11

Small problem again

play16:16

Oh, the hose came loose again

play16:41

The car has finally.. I think it died  now

play16:45

We pushed and pushed but we can't get it started again. So the lodge is about 4 kilometer from here

play16:52

So I'm going to hitch a ride on a motorbike because in the end motorbikes are always better!

play16:59

Right?

play17:04

I'm going on the wrapped motorbike

play17:07

I think it's very clever. I'm going to do  this also for my bike, it keeps clean

play17:12

Yeah

play17:21

Okay

play17:23

Oh, sorry yeah.. got it

play17:26

Okay - Yeah okay. There we go woohoo!

play17:34

I am back at the Sangha Lodge

play17:40

And the sun is going down now

play17:45

So pretty here

play17:49

That's amazing

play17:52

I am back at the lodge. What an incredible day

play17:56

I don't know my heart is happy. It was.. it was a unique experience and I think the best wildlife experience I ever had

play18:06

Seeing the elephants today it.. it made it all worth it, it made it all worth it

play18:12

Like yeah, all the past weeks of hardship or a little bit hardship

play18:18

Yeah, it made it all worth it and I would say absolute world class

play18:23

I think yeah, probably the best place to watch elephant in wild

play18:28

And then especially, forest elephants there are not so many of those around unfortunately anymore

play18:35

So to see you know, at some point, I counted 120 you know in the one sighting

play18:40

It was just incredible and and no other tourist it was just me and the rangers

play18:46

Yeah, as I said my heart is happy

play18:49

That was it for today, I really hope you like this video

play18:52

If you did, please give a big thumbs up. Subscribe down below and then I'll see you in the next next video

play19:00

Alright we're going to give Alaska a little clean because she is an absolute mess

play19:57

For supper, we have a green papaya  salad

play20:02

Mushrooms from the forest

play20:05

It's like a local pumpkin

play20:09

Aubergine gratin

play20:13

Breadfruit, otherwise know as Maron

play20:16

.. and fillet steak

play20:18

Enjoy - Thank you wow

play20:22

So they use a lot of the.. of course local produce what

play20:25

grows here. So this is some kind of uh.. it's kind of like, a potato mash

play20:31

But then it comes from this, it's a fruit yeah

play20:34

It's amazing and then the local pumpkin

play20:39

Looks like this

play20:41

.. and these mushrooms are harvested by the Ba'aka, the local pygmy tribe .
