Transcripts
hello YouTube again is Thomas and this
video is gonna be a reflection on my
application to the Royal College of Art
and some thoughts on maybe why they
rejected my application so I just get
straight to the point my portfolio
wasn't good enough now while I was in
China so I've been in China for about a
bit over a year now and I was kind of
thinking okay when I head back to the UK
what's my next step and I guess a
logical step regarding education is
master's degree because I've done my
degree now I did a BA in painting at
University of the Arts London and I
wanted to do then continue to do an MA
in painting at the Royal College of Art
so come October time I was like okay
let's let's check out their application
process and they brought the deadline
way forward into November so I was like
okay I cannot prepare I do not have the
time to prepare for a portfolio this
year I have to apply next year and then
they opened up a second kind of round of
applications that ended I think at the
beginning of February so I applied for
that so I did have some time to prepare
now at this kind of stage is kind of
Christmastime I feel like my work was
beginning to transition into something
more mature mostly regarding my
technique I was really getting a kind of
feel of oil paint and you could say
controlling the medium a bit better
I guess I'll put some of my work
somewhere on the screen I don't know
what this is somewhere on the screen so
you guys can see some of my better
pieces I submitted to my portfolio bear
in mind I think there was about 20
images in total so I'm only gonna put a
few of the good stuff and hide all the
bad stuff / experimental stuff that I
had submitted as well now as a side note
I actually did speak to I message
students at the RCA beforehand I do
practice a little bit of what I preach
on YouTube and I managed to get some
information out of some students in the
course and the problem with this year
was there was a complete
a new application process so the
previous students who had literally just
got in last year or whatever previous
years they didn't have experience with
this current process because it's
completely new most of its online they
had like a portal where you put all your
stuff before it used to be just I think
you sent ten images to an email account
then you send that to the email account
then you get reply back about an
interview or not and then obviously you
have the interview and it's pretty
normal process but this time you submit
a video of like you could say an artist
statement or what's your work about
concepts speak a little bit more about
yourself
and you had the statement statement I
think his usual I think it was a about
300 word statement saying why you wanted
to do a master's degree and then of
course you had the portfolio but RCA
please get your act together I don't
know if it's obviously coronavirus
kicked off and everything but I feel
like this is before it really started
doing damage to everything but while I
was applying I was looking everywhere so
obviously I'm in China so I couldn't go
to any open days and I needed
information because they didn't have it
on the website or I accept hour if I was
being stupid and I missed something but
I feel like I searched everywhere for
the bloody information and it either
wasn't clear or I was being stupid or it
wasn't there so the information I was
looking for was in this new portal that
they had for the application they had
basically five sections when you submit
kind of one main photo and for
supporting photos and they said for what
you submit in this section refer
specifically to the master's degree that
you're basically looking to apply to so
for me it would have been ma painting I
should have had specific instructions
from ma painting that would have told me
what to submit for
these up to 20 images or what they
really expected or anything like that
now I went to the website you click on
em a painting it was like okay sign up
for application process you will get
more information in the portal you log
into the portal and then the portal says
go and refer back to your specific and
may course information on what to put
here so it's like a it's a circular
thing I called them no answer I called
them again no answer I contacted my
family in the UK to call them no answer
my dad went to the reception they had no
idea and it was just basically
ridiculous he got referred to them the
painting department through reception he
left a message with them saying can they
call him back they didn't call him back
I sent an email straight away before I
even did all of that no answer so I'm
just like was I mean I tried my best so
I just ended up submitting just 20
images of what I thought kind of I guess
I tried to put them in somewhat kind of
categories but whether I was supposed to
do like five different projects and
throw and show a development of projects
God knows best but as I'm saying to be
honest regardless of whether I knew the
application the ins and outs of the
application process or not I don't think
my work was mature enough specifically
regarding the concept because when I was
speaking to some of the RCA students
they said that you know the concept of
your work
I guess them the maturity of that
concept and then how it relates to your
medium I think is something that has to
be very clear and I'm not entirely sure
whether all we see the the Royal College
of Art is expecting a certain type of
work just looking at many different
students within the RCA it seems like a
lot of the work is or what seems to be
more common generally speaking in fine
art to be honest now which I'm seeing a
lot is
works about identity identity politics
this kind of sort but there is still a
variation of work but that theme or
topic seems to be more common to focus
on what I'm observing on the social
media / other means yeah I guess going
back to the concept I just feel like I
needed to think about what really is
what my work really is about and I
thought I need to read more maybe I need
to have more references I need to have
more of a I guess you could say mature
collection of research but yeah that was
my experience I guess applying to the
RCA I will be heading back to the UK
before the end of the year it kind of
depends on how all of this stuff going
on in the world right now is gonna play
out but I do hope on applying again to
the RCA again in I'm gonna try and get
the early application deadline this time
the November deadline and I will be
visiting open days and I will be saying
to them what the hell happened last year
with the application process was that me
being stupid or was there something
weird going on in administration because
it was just it didn't seem like I could
get any information out of anyone about
as I said I accept if I was being stupid
that might be the case and of course if
my friends are watching this oh they'll
be like yes probably you you're dumb
so thanks thank you for that but I will
be documenting my next application to
the RCA and I guess a message from this
video we can all learn from failures
failures if you take in a positive way
you can learn from them and they're kind
of a stepping stone to the next stage so
maybe this wasn't a good year to get
into the Royal College of Art anyways
because of everything that's going on I
feel like the world is a mess right now
maybe once 2020 is out of the way I can
start my new masters degree in 2021
I hope and we'll see we'll see how that
goes I'll just continue documenting
continue talking what what I know about
and continue expanding my youtube
channel so keep posting comments as I
keep saying each video that this channel
is built from my community's engagement
or past two hundred and sixty
subscribers now so thank you to Ron so
boring and watching and please don't
forget to subscribe and like this video
bye
you
