Highlights
The MAFD2HP is a 2HP Eurorack module that allows you to trigger the individual steps of your DFAM in any order and sequence using MIDI input from a keyboard, drum controller, sequencer, or DAW.
You can mount the MAFD2HP in your Eurorack case and power it with your Eurorack power supply, or use a standalone power supply and mount it on the side of your DFAM.
The MAFD2HP has a tiny switch that lets you select between MIDI channel 16 and MIDI channel 8.
To sync your DFAM to your DAW using the MAFD, patch the MAFD's Advance Clock output to the DFAM's Advance Clock input, and connect the MAFD to your computer via USB MIDI.
In your DAW, configure the MAFD as a USB MIDI device and create an instrument track to sequence MIDI notes to the MAFD.
The MAFD maps any eight sequential MIDI notes to the eight steps of the DFAM, allowing you to program patterns by drawing notes in your DAW's piano roll.
You can adjust the tempo of the pattern in your DAW, and the DFAM will stay in sync.
The MAFD has a USB MIDI input and a TRS MIDI input, allowing you to send MIDI from various controllers.
The MAFD has three outputs: Advance Clock (to trigger DFAM steps), Pressure/Mod Wheel, and Velocity, which you can use to add nuance to each step.
You can automate the Pressure/Mod Wheel and Velocity parameters in your DAW to further control the DFAM's steps.

hey it's kevin with sonoclast
and this is the mafd2hp
in case you're new to mafd mafd stands
for midi adapter for dfam
and it lets you trigger the individual
steps of your dfam
in any order and any sequence you like
you can do this with a midi keyboard or
midi drum controller or any other midi
controller you can also do it with a
sequencer or daw
as its name mafd2hp suggests it's now a
2hp eurorack module
you can mount it in your eurorack and
power with your power supply
and there's also an option available to
get a standalone power supply
and mount it on the side of your d-fan
as you can see this custom case
is simply a replacement for the existing
panel
so you just unscrew the wooden panel
that on this side and put the case on
and then your maf d fits neatly on the
side of your dfam
the math d2 hp has all the same features
as the original dfim
it also adds a tiny switch that lets you
select between
midi channel 16 and midi channel 8.
check out the links in the description
for more information on how to buy one
of your own
so i've received a lot of questions
about how to sink your dfam to your daw
using your maf d
so let me hook this up and i'll walk
through how you can set it up on your
own daw
so as you can see i'm using bit wig but
of course the same basic procedure
would work with ableton or logic or any
other die you might use
my dfam and mafti are already powered on
the first thing i'll do is patch the
maftis to advance clock output
to the dfam's advanced clock input
and then i'll hit the run button
at this point the dfam is waiting for
the maf d to trigger steps
and the mafti is waiting for midi notes
that tell it which step to trigger
next i'll plug in the usb midi cable to
the mafti
and the other end of this goes to my
computer
and this is how bitwig will send midi to
the maftiy
now i'm going to make sure bit wig has
the math deconfigured as a usb midi
device
so i'll go to settings see the add
controller
midi keyboard just a generic midi
keyboard
add and then i'll select sone class math
d2 hp
there so now it's active to bit wig
now i'm going to create a track to
sequence midi
bit wig calls that kind of track an
instrument track
it's right here
so in order to route the midi sequence
to an external hardware instrument in
bit wig you have to add it as
add a hardware device
so hardware instrument here
okay
and in the hardware instrument panel
i'll select
the sonoclass mafd2hp to send it to
and i'll select channel 16
which is the midi channel that i have
selected on
on the with using the switch on my mfd
so now bit wig knows about the sonic
class mathd and it's ready to send midi
notes to it
so let me put some notes in and we'll
sequence it
so here's the piano roll you'll notice
if i hit
looks like if i hit c2 it hits the first
step
so the mafda maps any eight sequential
midi notes
to the eight steps of the dfam so you
can see here as i drag the mouse
along the piano roll how the steps
follow
so i'll build my pattern so that the c
note is the first step
so i'm going to draw in some steps
i'm going to do 16th notes
so just for fun i'm going to go forward
and backward
so i've got it set up to loop and you'll
see here it goes forward and then
backwards
of course i can go slow so i'll slow it
down to like
say 20 bpm
you'll notice that i can crank it up to
ludicrous speeds
let's try 999 bpm
now it only goes up to 666
but
then i can go back down and it'll still
be in sync
see what it sounds like without
[Music]
so that's the dfa i'm just running
and then i can start it from here but we
got to resync it so
all i'm going to do is
play the first note and then
since the first note is a c and i want
that to be the first step i'll know that
it needs to be on the first step at this
point
so i'm going to move it to the first
step hit run
now it should be in sync
so of course you can move the notes
around even while it's running
and it'll it'll shift the pattern around
so let me do that
[Music]
do
[Music]
[Music]
so i think you get the idea there that
gives you an idea what you can do
of course you could use you know
whatever midi controller to send
notes into this midi sequencer and then
they would
be reflected
so while i have it close up let me talk
about what's
what the nafty has on it so the mafia
has two inputs
of course you saw the usb midi input
but there's also a trs midi input and
there's
this trs this dim to trs adapter that
comes with the mft
so you can send in midi from a keyboard
or
anything else that sends over the
standard midi cable
and then it has three outputs so
the first the one output that we used
already was the two advanced clock and
that's
what selects the selects the steps on
the dfam
so that's that's you know you're always
going to have that connected
when you're using it and then the other
two outputs
are pressure and mod wheel and then
velocity
so velocity is just the midi velocity
for the note so you know the harder the
note hits
the higher the voltage and it'll control
any of these inputs
uh the pressure mod wheel same idea it
reads the
the pressure or the after touch from
your keyboard or drum controller or
anything that's sending pressure but you
can also use mod wheel
so these parameters of course you could
automate them in your daw
also and use them to add further nuance
to each step
of your of your dfan while it's running
so that's about it thanks for sticking
