Display, Battery Life and Webcam
The 4K OLED display has excellent image quality and manages great battery life despite the high resolution and refresh rate. The 1080p webcam is a nice improvement over 720p in older XPS models.
Performance and Thermals
The Intel Core i7 and RTX 4070 provide good performance for creative workloads like video editing. Thermals are well managed with vapor chamber cooling and the laptop avoids throttling under load.
Comparisons and Audio
Performance is on par with last year's XPS 17. Speakers sound good but the MacBook Pro's are still better.
Final Thoughts
The XPS 16 brings nice upgrades like the 4K OLED display, great battery life and responsive haptic touchpad. A bit heavy and expensive but still impressive overall.

Transcripts
hey everybody it's Andrew and I've got
some exciting news here today I have the
Dell XPS 16 in the studio I've been
using it for the past two weeks and
today Dell is selling it on their
website both the dell xps4 and the Dell
xps1 16 both brand new for 2024 now I've
been putting the XPS 16 through its
Paces for the past 2 weeks rigorous
testing of course battery life is
amazing on this we're going to get into
that in this review we got a new
processor the core Ultra 7 155h AKA
meteor Lake processor we've got the RTX
470 for graphics work we've got an
improved display here a 4K plus 3840 by
2400 OLED display and I got to tell you
folks it is stunning we've got a lot to
talk about here especially performance
here is it better than last year's XPS
15 and XPS 17 well you're going to want
to tune in right now to to find out hey
everybody it's Andrew and this is the
review of the Dell XPS 16 brand new for
20124 coming up now before we get to the
unit itself I just want to let everyone
know in the interest of transparency and
fold disclosure I'm not being paid by
Dell I'm not being sponsored by Dell all
the opinions you're about to hear are my
own Dell is not getting copy approval
that means they're seeing this video for
the first time just like you now this
unit was on loan from Dell and once this
revieww is done I'll be sending it back
now when it comes to pricing the XPS 14
has a starting price of $6.99 the XPS 16
has a starting price of $118.99 you're
looking at around 3,400 as configured
here today with this review unit for
those that are interested I will leave
links in the description below for more
information and we can buy one now of
course it is a lot of money to pay for a
laptop but it is their Flagship device
and in line with a similarly equipped
Apple MacBook Pro which comes in at
about $3,500 so you're going to look at
about $100 less although it not is not
necessarily better than the MacBook Pro
as we'll see but it does bring a lot of
really great high-end features to the
table let's get into it now so without
further Ado let's get this out of the
box okay so looks like once again we get
some pretty nice packaging from
pretty hefty inner box
here welcome to Dell let's do great
things together now one thing we do get
here is a dongle in the Box here as you
can see it's HDMI usba and this flips
out so it's nice to include that of
course we'll check out the port
selection in a moment but that is
included in the box and then your power
charger here it's 130 ws and it seems a
little bit Slimmer than before and of
course we get the unit
itself and holding it for the first time
here this is absolutely gorgeous here as
you can see here so pretty nice all
metal design here uh this is what we saw
when they debuted this at CES we took a
look at this let's see if we can open
this with one
finger we can and yes it is the
platinum and she is gorgeous now right
off the bat you'll see the co-pilot
button right there and you'll see the
capacitor row that's going to turn off
after inactivity so after 5 minutes the
capacitive row goes off so if you're
watching a movie it's not going to be
distracting that's a big improvement
over the XPS 13 plus okay let's get a
measurement of the weight with the unit
alone you're looking at
2277 kg or
5.19 lb and with the power cord and the
power charger you're looking at a total
travel weight of 2. 664 kilograms or
5.87 3 pounds I would say all in it's a
little bit of heft although it does pack
a-p punch under the hood with that
discret GPU but it's not the lightest
package out there that's for sure okay
let's check out the port selection on
the left side are two USB type-c
Thunderbolt four ports that are full
function supporting data charge and
display out now moving over to the right
side you get a Micro SD card reader a
third USB type-c Thunderbolt P port and
finally a 3.5 mm microphone headphone
combo Jack to round out the ports on
this unit now as far as that micro SD
card reader that's fine but I would have
preferred a full-size SD card reader
especially if you're going to do content
creation now don't forget in the box is
the dongle that includes an HDMI port a
usba port and that connects via USB
type-c now to get inside this unit it's
actually pretty easy all you have to do
is remove the 8 T5 torque screw
pop off the bottom plate with a guitar
pick or a pride tool work around the
edges take your time you don't want to
rush it and pop off the bottom plate and
you're in once you do that you can get
access to the internals of this unit now
once inside you'll notice the two fans
for cooling we'll get into the thermal
performance later on in this review and
you'll notice that 99.5 wat hour battery
that's just below the legal limit to
take on an airplane we'll get into the
battery life later on in this review and
spoiler alert it's pretty phenomenal
we'll talk more about that very soon now
as far as what's user upgradeable the
SSD is a pcie Gen 4 SSD nvme and as you
can see from these excellent reads and
wres certainly fast enough would you
need this laptop to do now when it comes
to the memory of course this is now
soldered into the motherboard like most
laptops in 2024 unfortunately the ram is
not upgradable by the user now one of
the key features of the XPS 15 and the
17 of yesterday year of course of course
meant you had upgradeable Ram but that
is not the case here but the good news
is you can get this with up to 64 GB of
that LP ddr5x Ram running in dual
Channel mode and because it is soldered
in the Silver Lining is you can run it
at a faster rate here so that is a
little bit of a benefit I think although
I still prefer to have upgradeable Ram
by the user again we don't get that here
in 2024 for the most part now when it
comes to wireless you're looking at
Intel killer Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4
that has been working well both
Bluetooth and the Wi-Fi have had no
issues of course I love the fact that it
is Wi-Fi 7 making it a little bit more
futureproof than say something like
Wi-Fi 6E that's good to see here both
working very well now when it comes to
the XPS 16 there are actually two
options when it comes to the display a
16.3 in full HD plus that's 1920 x 1200
and then there is the 16.3 in 4k plus
3840 X 2400 00 OLED or OLED option
that's the one we have here today the
highest end option and I'm glad they
sent it over it's an infinity edge touch
display maximum brightness of 400 nits
100% DCI P3 color gamut coverage really
high contrast of course with an old LED
display so we're going to get into it
right now because this is an excellent
excellent display and it has a refresh
rate up to 90 HZ here so you're getting
a little bit higher than you get with 60
HZ although not quite the 120 we seen on
a lot of OLED displays here in 2024 but
I will say this this is a UHD plus
display not a 3K plus display like we've
been seeing so nice to have it in a full
4K plus resolution here and as with any
OLED display you get the really deep
blacks the super vibrant colors the
really high contrast it's all there
excellent coverage of the color gamut
really color accurate so if you're doing
content Creation in Lightroom Photoshop
video editing things like color grade
this is an excellent panel to do those
tasks it's also a Dolby Vision display
watching High dynamic range content in
Netflix Amazon YouTube has been superb
on this panel and I like the fact that
it does have the multi-touch layer
allowing you to navigate the OS with
your finger and having that 90 HZ
refresh rate makes it a little bit more
smoother a little bit more fluid and you
would think because it has this high-res
4K plus display with a 90 HZ refresh
rate battery life is going to be
atrocious on this that's the thinking I
went going into this boy was I wrong
check out these battery numbers on this
laptop it managed 12 hours and 22
minutes on the PC Mark 10 modern office
test it did an amazing 15 hours and 18
minutes on the video playback test and
on the gaming test did 2 hours and 44
minutes not too shabby in fact these are
some excellent numbers here and
especially when you compare it to the
16-in Spectre X360 from HP this
certainly did better in that regard and
we could chalk this up to the fact that
it has a very large 99.5 wat hour
battery which is just shy of that 100w
hour legal limit you can take on an
airplane I like the big battery here I
like the big numbers it's producing when
it comes to endurance now keep in mind I
did set the refresh rate to 90 HZ when I
did this it was set in the balance mode
so those are the numbers expect even
better battery life when you bump it
down to say something like 60 htz and if
you want even better battery life go
with the full HD Plus option that will
give you a few more hours as well and
for those wondering it trounces both the
XPS 15 and the XPS 17 of last year
getting much better results here in all
the tests that I Ran So a big
Improvement year-over-year when it comes
to battery life on the XPS line
here so this is the camera on the brand
new Dell XPS 16 here for 2024 1080p IR
camera that means you can log in with
face recognition with Windows hello now
there I don't think there is a shutter
switch there I don't see one there so
just for those wondering but you do have
a pretty nice camera here 1080p which of
course is an improvement over the 720p
we saw on the XPS line in the previous
years so this is a nice Improvement a
welcome Improvement indeed now this has
a npu it's a meteor Lake processor so uh
The Studio Effects are here or the AI
enhanced effects so you got the auto
framing this will always keep you in
frame let's see if this uh if I move
around y there it goes that works okay
let's turn that off you got the eye
contact that of course allows you to
keep your eye focused on the subject and
then of course the background blur
effect the standard blur and the
portrait blur and I think it's a pretty
decent job here overall what do you
think let me know in the comment section
below what do you think about the video
quality what do you think about the
audio quality and I think it's pretty
impressive they put an IR camera 1080p
in such a small bezel so kudos to Dell
on that and for those wondering the
camera here on the XPS 16 versus the XPS
15 XPS 17 which both have a 720p IR
camera we're seeing a big Improvement
here with the 1080p IR camera I'm
curious to know what you think let me
know in the comment section below okay
let's talk performance and this is
running the Intel Core Ultra 7 155h that
of course is the new meteor Lake
processor paired with the Nvidia GeForce
RTX 470 GPU and when we look at
something like the XPS 17 9730 running
the same GPU but a different obviously
13 Gen processor we're seeing pretty
much a very interesting Trend
year-over-year we're not seeing a big
increase in the single and multicore
performance in fact we're seeing
slightly less I would say single core
performance slightly better multi-core
performance over last year say XPS 17
9730 and of course when it comes to the
graphics running the same GPU slightly
less this year I would say on the fire
strike and time spy score but not much
to make an issue out of it so it's
pretty much on par as we saw last year
we which did a little bit better but I
would say for the graphics in terms of
gaming and all that I think it'll be
fine pretty much on par as last year but
we're seeing a more efficient processor
now the gben 6.2 single core score here
of 2439 certainly didn't blow me away
like I said with this meteor Lake
processor but certainly is capable here
to do everything you need to do with
this laptop including video editing and
stuff we'll talk about later now geek
Ben 6.2 multi-core score here
13,804 did better than the XPS 17 of
last year but slightly not much better
but slightly and in line with other
meteor Lake processors but not quite as
good as the MacBook Pros we saw there
now the open CL GPU score of that
geekbench test it did 10
15,942 CPU single core score more in
line with the other medial Lake laptops
not quite as good as the MacBook Pro Pro
16 or even the MacBook air5 which did
very well in that test now the cinebench
2024 CPU multi-core score here 755 did a
little bit better than the Spectre X360
16in and of course that review is coming
but definitely did better than the
MacBook air15 but not quite as good as
the MacBook Pro 16 with the M3 Max and
here are the numbers compared to the XPS
15 9530 from last year as you can see
the XPS 16 for the most part had better
numbers overall but not that much better
than the XPS 15 for those wondering and
when I ran my 4K render test and da
Vinci resolve everything worked really
well here rendering in a very fast time
a 4K 30 frames per second video a
3-minute video and when you compare to
others in this category it did very well
in that regard so when you look at
something like the XPS 17 last year and
this year you're not going to degrade in
terms of video editing probably a little
bit better I would say even though
they're running the same GPU test very
good very smooth scrubbing through the
time timeline here very little delay or
any kind of hiccups so the overall video
editing so far has been very good on the
XPS 16 and just like the XPS 15 and 17
of last year I don't characterize this
as a gaming laptop either but of course
with the RTX 470 you definitely get
playable frame rates on some of the more
popular titles just play around with the
settings but very playable frame rates
as you can see here even very processor
very Graphics intensive games like
cyberpunk 2077 playable on certain
settings of course now for those
wondering you can control the different
thermal profiles in the myell app and of
course that worked well in terms of the
optimized the cool mode the quiet mode
and when you really want to get the
maximum power put it in the ultra
performance mode now one thing to note
if you go with the 4070 GPU option as I
have here in my review unit you do get a
vapor chamber cooling solution here as
you can see so that's been working out
really well in terms of The Thermals and
the overall performance here when I
tested the laptop for thermal throttling
in the time spy stress test great news
here 98.3% passing score meaning it
detected very little if any thermal
throttling so that's good sign right
there and when I put it under load I
tested The Thermals in terms of the
surface temperatures here never going
above say 43° C above the keyboard below
the display where the heat dissipates
but where you're placing your fingers on
the keyboard never getting overly hot
never too hot to the touch so that's a
good sign here and on the other side
very impressive here very cool to the
touch never overheating even under load
as I was testing here so very impressive
surface temperatures here even under
load now when it comes to the fan noise
not too bad although under load will
reach as high as 50 DB on my meter here
so definitely something to contend with
but not too distracting not too annoying
when you're in the balanced or optimized
mode doing everyday tasks the sound of
the fans was not much of an issue so
that that is good news in that regard
now here's an example of the fan noise
underload let's give it a
listen and as I showed you earlier
opening the lid with one finger works
very well and the hinges on really well
here folks I saw very little if any
screen wobble when typing that's a big
pet peeve of mine not present here and
that's a good thing now when it comes to
the keyboard if you've used the XPS 13
plus the last couple of years with that
read design you'll be very familiar with
the way this keyboard feels looks and
performs the tactility the key travel
the overall feedback to me is very good
now some people may not like the keys so
close together it's very different than
say something like the ThinkPad X1
Carbon gen 12 that we just looked at but
as far as this keyboard I'm used to it
with the XPS 13 I like using it typing
out long documents emails and the like
has been working out really well now it
does have a multi-stage backlight but if
you go with the Platinum model as we
have here here you'll sometimes have
trouble seeing the contrast between the
white LED backlight and these light
colored Keys If you go with the graphite
it's not much of an issue because of the
darker color keys so just keep that in
mind now as far as that capacitive row
I'm not the biggest fan of it although
it is working well it's responsive and
there is something new here for 2024 at
least on this model it now turns off
after 5 minutes of inactivity something
that was a problem I think on the XPS 13
plus say if you wanted to watch a movie
that was kind of of annoying but now
that it goes off after 5 minutes I'll
take that and you can change that
setting in the Bios as well now if
you've used the XPS 13 plus with the
redesign then you know about the glass
haptic touchpad without any delineation
of where the haptics begin and where
they end well I can tell you this this
implementation on the XPS 16 is working
out really well it's improved haptics in
terms of the overall responsiveness and
the scrolling and all the gestures
working even better I think on this
model than on the X PS 13 plus and that
might be to due to the fact that sensil
recently announced that they were one of
the suppliers for the haptic touchpads
on this particular unit as well as the
xps4 so I'm not surprised here of this
improved haptics in this haptic touchpad
and for those wondering where the
touchpad begins and ends it's between
the alt keys so everywhere in that area
is available for tapping and using as
far as the gestures and scrolling and
everything so very responsive overall a
very improved touchpad over the XPS 133
plus and it's a definite improvement
over the mechanical touchpad of the XPS
15 and 17 from last year okay on the
left is the Del X ps16 on the right is
the MacBook Pro I have the 14in with the
six speakers I don't have the 16in for
the latest of that so I have to use this
one but it does have six speakers this
has quad speakers as far as the dell it
is also got waves Max audio it's got
Dolby Atmos help with the spatial audio
I think it's quite good so let's give
them a listen let's hear the D XPS 16
versus the MacBook Pro so you tell me
what you think when we're done let me
know in the comments section below now
let's give them a
[Music]
listen
I am quite
[Music]
un
okay let's bring it all home what do I
think about the Dell XPS 16 brand new
for 2024 massive improvements in a lot
of areas there's a lot of Pros here as
you can see and for good reason 4K plus
OLED display 90 HZ 16.3 size is really
good meteor Lake processor that's good
massive battery life improvement over
the XPS 15 and 17 stunning looks in this
read design I love it and it's a very
responsive glass haptic touchpad here
probably by sensil that's my guess here
the capacitive row now turns off after 5
minutes of inactivity no throttling
detected underload Wi-Fi 7 makes it more
future proof that's always welcome and
the quad speakers are pretty powerful
although I still find that the MacBook
Pro speakers are still King of the Hill
and I love the fact that employs Vapor
chamber cooling at least with the model
that has the RTX 470 and it now has
faster Ram thanks to the fact that it is
now soldered into to the motherboard and
while having the faster Ram is great I
still wish it was user upgradable like
it was on the XPS 15 and 17 that is no
longer the case here micro SD card
reader instead of a full-size SD card
reader is fine although as a content
creator I would prefer a full-size SD
card reader no HDMI or usba Port
although you do get the dongle in the
box it is on the heavy side but not
terribly heavy but you will notice the
half and finally it is expensive
although it is Dell's Flagship here and
in line in terms of pricing with the
MacBook
Pro but with its stunning redesign here
with its gorgeous 4K Plus 90 HZ display
OLED display meteor L processor that
gives you more efficiency and much
better battery life over the prior
iterations the Dell XPS 16 is stunning
in pretty much every way even the price
tag it is high although I do expect that
to come down over time but I have no
hesitation recommending the XPS 16 here
for
2024 so please hit the like button
