Transcripts
The day came that, um...
we were told that we were gonna play with the
under 23s and...
that was just...
I cannot explain, I was
nervous for the whole week before.
That game, and, um...
yeah we were finally getting closer
my family were over in London
as soon as I told them that
I was gonna play with the under 23s
they all flew to London
my parents and my grandparents.
And... the fact that they were there
it made it all even more unusual
because I'm usually alone
so it kinda, you know
added more... not pressure, but
made the situation even more special.
The way I got so close to Héctor, was my first day
He came up, he introduced himself and said
I'm going to be spending a lot of time with you because he was injured
and I was injured
So straight away, I felt a good connection.
And I know how big of a name he is as well so even just coming into.
the changing room with big names. For him to do that was so nice of him.
the changing room with big names. For him to do that was so nice of him.
It did help me settle in straight away.
I had been out roughly, a best part of a season. I was struggling with my groin injury.
Different problems, i had a double hernia, i had fluid in the adductor
Just lots of problems going on in that groin area
It was just uncomfortable to run, uncomfortable. Even sleeping, I was sleeping on my side.
I had to make sure there was a pillow in between my legs, so it was like
the most horrible time of my life.
Coming to a new club, I had a lot of expectation on me, and little time to do it.
So, when I did come the physios were brilliant with me.
They helped me rehab, they never rushed anything and when I did eventually get back,
Me and Héctor made our comebacks. Or my debut and his comeback on the same night,
it was a great night for everyone.
We had to travel to Telford
we were playing Wolves, under 23s
yeah I remember, I was very in my zone
during the whole day.
There was doubts, I'm not gonna lie, there was doubts
I felt safe because the physios and the doctors
and conditioning coaches wouldn't have put me
in that situation if I wasn't ready.
Um... so I ticked all the boxes.
I was fully ready to go
but still in my mind
That's how our mind works.
Just to be there, with Héctor and share it with him, and..
It was a good memory, I look back on that night as
one of the better nights of the last few years
Just to share it with Héctor was good for all three of us to get minutes on the same pitch
There was, you know all this talk online.
About the full backs union, and like we kind of just hit it off from the start.
I think you could see when I came, I was maybe pretty nervous
like I had the young boy look about me.
You don't have much time to settle in, you're playing with big players,
big names. So you need to hit the ground running
and I remember I probably over thought every mistake I made that day
and went home and was like, "I could have done better", "I could have done this"
Whereas, I wish I just relaxed a bit more and enjoyed it.
Umm, and I think that was the time when Héctor said to me
"You're good enough to play here, just believe in yourself"
and I think that helped me so much. Just that little talk it was after training
Just in the changing room, me and him had just done a gym session together
and after it, we just sat down for maybe a hour or so and just spoke.
I think that changed everything, like I went home that night feeling much about myself.
and I remember texting him saying like "thanks so much for that chat"
like it helped me so much, and from that chat I went in with
a different mindset, a different confidence and it was a big part to do with Hector
He was just the person I needed then you know
'cause when I run quick he'd run quicker
then I'd try to beat him and I couldn't
and then I'd get frustrated and then I'd
try again and I will do it
but then he'd run again and he'd beat, so it was
just this constant
challenge.
It was competitive but in the best possible nature as teammates.
So, to do that and push each other on to the max was brilliant, and..
every single day it was a new challenge for us, and...
days were obviously long and hard, as well like
it wasn't easy
it was enjoyable because you're doing it with good guys and good people around the club.
But, they were hard. There were some hard days and..
Together Héctor helped me, and hopefully i done my best to help him as well.
And yeah, that was just the beginning of our...
of our friendship,
and we were there for each other in those times
Rob was already training with the first team
he wasn't part of rehab anymore so
KT was my companion during those times.
Who in the squad need their own reality show?
I think you should get one.
What do you mean man?
i think your own would be funny.
I think your one would be good.
Mine would be terrible.
Really?
I think you are funny guy, man.
Eat chocolate and play PlayStation.
Quite boring, man.
I think there's a lot of people
that'd be very excited to see that.
No, yours would be crazy to be fair.
I think I'm being-
Just getting dressed in the morning, is one.
Yeah yeah, just that innit.
Takes me 45 mins every morning man.
No, I'm joking.
That is good. Good style.
A bit crazy, but who am I to say?
Well you- you've got a bit of you as well-
There's a bit about you, I like it man.
You keeping it like, very Scottish
very...
I wouldn't say chavvy, chavvy is the wrong...
Nah that's probably spot on.
I would always say to my family like,
Héctor's helping me, hector's taking me out today.
Héctor's doing this, and
I think they even appreciated how much they helped me, so
for me, he's the biggest infleuncer
in the team for me would be him.
and helped me the most so.
and helped me the most so.
I wouldn't be or I wouldn't have been as comfortable
in Arsenal or in London without him.
he helped me from day 1.
I can't thank him enough for that
So thanks very much for that Héctor,
I really appreciate it
Héctor's normally pretty relaxed, like he's
pretty confident in what he's gonna do
I don't know if he had any nerves before that game
I think he was on the bench
and he only came on as a sub so
he might have been a bit more laid back
I was starting so I was like
I was nervous because it was the first game back
in front of the home stadium and the crowd
it was just the ending that made it perfect.
I didn't know I was gonna play
but um, Unai spoke to me and said
"Héctor if... the score"
"you know, if we're winning 2-0 or 3-0"
"then I'll probably gives you some minutes today."
Amazing to just be part of it again
like going to the hotel
and as I said, all these little things
all these little rituals
[Doctor] I'm so sorry mate
but you know you'll get back from this
you know, cruciate are not a big issue these days
Of course.
[Doctor] Yeah, we will get back from this, no problem.
Cool.
[Doctor] We need now...
I don't know what you want to do
Do you want to come in this afternoon?
You don't have to.
If you want to come and see the lads, it's up to you
if you'd rather stay at home
Yeah, I'll probably just come for a bit
and then we can chat about everything then.
[Doctor] Okay.
I couldn't tell you what I was thinking of then
because it kind of felt like I wasn't even there
you know, it just felt surreal somehow.
My mom always send me
a text message before every game.
That is a routine that she has and I have.
And before every single game
it doesn't matter if it's a friendly
doesn't matter if I'm on the bench
whatever, she just sends me a message.
And I remember she sent me such a long message and
and kind of got emotional
because I had missed that part of my
of my pre-match as well.
I could see in her words how
how excited they were for me
and um...
how finally for them they could sit down and watch their
their son play.
They are the ones we have in mind everytime
that we step onto the pitch.
On the Arsenal bench this evening
Goalkeeper Matt Macey
Welcome back Hector Bellerin!
I had goosebumps when they read it out
'cause I knew they'd be a response from the fans
so I was half waiting for the response
and as they cheered
I got goosebumps down my back
and was a bit like
that must have felt so good.
It was such a mix of emotions, but uh
at that time I wsan't even thinking about
all that I had gone through, I was just like
I enjoyed every single minute of that game
of those few minutes that I played.
I couldn't hear any noise, I was so...
I dunno, just nervous, and...
in my head
I just remember the feeling of finally walking in
and walking into that pitch and
feeling those floodlights.
AND WELCOME BACK....
TWO...
HECTOR..BELLERIN
Just finally
the moment right?
The come back.
Seeing Héctor playing again, it was a proud moment
with my personal experience of injuries as well
knowing what he had to go through
and all those months
on the sidelines
you know how much it means to
to be back in the football pitch.
I was very, very, very happy.
We opened the bracket
and we need to close the bracket.
That is so so happy
not only for him
for all our team
The ultimate mark is that
when he's actually competing
and he's going back again
obviously Héctor is someone that
you could see the reaction in the stadium
and the fans, people just love him.
You go through the warm-up and
he's an Arsenal boy, isn't he
so it was exciting in a way.
His first or second touch was just fantastic
there was a really good sense amongst the whole team
that had worked with him.
It was kind of written in the stars for us to have that night, kind of together.
It was, I came off at 60 or 70 i think.
And he came on for me, so just to have that like change over
and that special moment together like, i think it was good.
Both of us deserved a good night, because we had put in alot of work for that.
The Forest game was brilliant
one I scored
and
2) Hector came on and got an assist
straight away, I think it was his second touch or something
he got an assist.
Ball gets cleared and I'm on the edge of the box
and...
Joe was alone in the middle of the goal so I just
slot it in for him and he scored
and I was just like
"I cannot believe this"
How can this happen?
Like, it was the perfect night
We beat them 5-0.
We all make a comeback.
Rob scores.
Captain in the team.
I get an assist.
It was... everything about it.
As I spoke to his mom
which I had a change to seeing at the end of the game
I couldn't figure out a better comeback
if I had to choose one.
I was speaking to Rob after the game and we were like
Mate we couldn't have asked for
anything better.
I remember at the end of the game
when we are all walking and clapping at the fans
we sort of got each other
right near the North Bank I think it is
and we had a big hug
and I just remember him saying:
"We've worked so hard for this moment" and...
they way it panned out
you couldn't have planned it any better.
If you had said what's your dream comeback
that would have been the game.
I knew after the game
I would never forget that moment
but also I knew that there was still
a long way.
Because after that assist
even in the game, I could feel like that I-
I wasn't in the position that I was before the injury
I'm never fully satisfied until
they are well and truly out of the woods.
You know, 6 to 12 months later and
and you can look back on it.
I think Héctor has that mindset as well
and he knows, just because he's back playing
he's still got little things he needs to work on
and maintain.
Just because he's put the kit on and he's played
90, or, lots of 90s now
he's still got stuff away from the bright light
that he's gonna need to chip away and work at.
It's a year plus injury to be back to yourself.
You do have the 9 months period
you won't be able to play
but until your start to feel
how you felt before the injury
and the confidence in your knee and sutff like that
it doesn't happen until a couple of months down the line
if not longer.
Obviously with Héctor he felt unsure about something
wanted it checked in and clarified before
he could feel comfortable.
We have a rehab WhatsApp group and
I still haven't brought myself
to take him out of the group
and chatting to Hector last week
we think we might need to keep him there
just for some banter.
I think the day that
you remove him from the WhatsApp group
It's probably the day when you
when you sort of, y'know, send him off I suppose.
Like a kid going his first day at school but
certainly from my end, it's been super pleasing.
It's happened to me in a personal level as well
to the knee injuries you always felt
you couldn't keep up with your teammates
and that's frustrating.
That's the time you need to work the hardest
and keep fighting to get to
that level that you wanna be.
I finished the game thinking:
"Yo, now is the time that I got to work hard"
"now is the time that"
"now I'm ready, now I'm in the team"
"now is the moment I've got to push myself"
"to be where I was just before that injury."
Nice way to burst your bubble.
