[Music]
that game at chelsea overall was a bit
of a turning point
even being able to draw that game um but
the
grit that the whole team showed the
character how we defended with ten men
and how we exploit it
what we had even with one man lesson we
were able to
cause them um to cause danger and to put
them in trouble and
come back into a 2-2 it was just
interesting i took my touch
i saw the space open so i just shot
and um it was a goal
and for me
[Music]
that meant the world
[Applause]
it took me a while to then you know
realize that the job wasn't done
like yeah i was back i scored in chelsea
um you know i was back in the team but
you know
i wasn't fully fit you come from
like an eight nine month injury that's
been
[Music]
one of the toughest things that you've
ever gone through and now you keep
getting these annoying niggles that yes
one week two weeks it's nothing major
but you know they're keeping you off the
pitch
these next months we're going to be in
the trenches you know it's there's going
to be good days there's going to be bad
days this
there's going to be a lot of sort of
unenjoyable things
but in some at the same time always try
and put some context to it and say
but at the end point this is what we're
shooting for
you when you think about when you're
injured and you think
data you're back you're back you know
and you can enjoy
your football again and it really is not
like that
and it's something that people told me
before
they say hector you're gonna be back
after six months eight months whatever
but you're not gonna be yourself again
until a year year and a half later
you just want to be back after an injury
and and hope that everything else is
is up up to speed like it was before the
injury and
sometimes that's not the case sometimes
everything else needs
needs time to adapt as well and the last
thing you want to do is
miss more games but you need to
understand that that that's the case and
it's it's part of the process
even though i was eager and due to
injuries sometimes i had to play
i wasn't in the best position
there's so many things that people don't
see that you need to put in the work
and off the park then that's what
basically gets you on the park all the
work that you do and
with the physios and the sports
scientists and even there's people there
who help your mindset as well so you put
in owls to these people and
the reward as you get on the pitch
one of the things that happens with
injuries like this is
that even though the structure
of your knee is good your brain
knows that there's a trauma and that
there's something there that is not okay
so without you noticing
your body will compensate and will try
to
you know put more weight on your right
leg instead of your left leg because
it knows that you know there's a problem
there so i started getting
loads of issues in my calves and my
hamstrings on the right side
and one of the things that i also does
is that because you're not putting as
much
weight and you don't do as much work on
your left side
your muscle starts to
become weaker because you don't use it
as much
i had to change my mindset again and be
like yo
i'm gonna ask for help
search for another opinion what do i
need to do to
make sure i get better again and i can
be in a position where i don't need to
worry about injuries anymore and i can
be
fully confident i just decided to
to look at it from a more holistic point
of view i heard about this
astrologist in france
that hard work with top players and i
could have someone
you know give giving me a fresh point of
view i wanted to try
i wanted to try something that would
hopefully make me feel better
yeah which is really weird right to
enjoy the masters but yeah i had a great
two in the past
and then just a great two in the suryas
okay
apart from that i had once one drawing
and stuff like this but
one of the things that i learned from
him is that everything is connected
the way your eyes work
can affect your neck the way
your neck works can affect your
shoulders
and that having one shoulder higher than
another
puts compression on one hip
then that can affect your knee that can
affect so
it's all abdominal effects
we all think we're different we all
think we're just superheroes or
you know now this is not going to happen
to me
but the truth is it does and um it was
hard for me to take
and to kind of humble me again you know
after you know that chelsea go to be
like yo
this is this is not it you still need to
do
some more work um if you want to be
what you need to be to to help this team
move forward
[Music]
things in the league didn't really go
our way
you know through changes of manager and
you know we didn't have time to really
forge the identity that now we're
building as a club it was a bit too
early to instill
all these new principles you know i had
won the fa cup twice before
and it's a trophy
that is so important to the club and
we were only
four games away of reaching
[Music]
the final
for me isn't it an absolute honor
i feel so lucky when i put this armband
on
you know my way of leading is
leading by example and being
good to everyone around and
make everyone feel a part of of our
family and
being there for the young players being
there for the players that
are not doing so well and being there
for the players that they just come into
the team
and keeping the values and principles
that um
arsenal showed me when i first got here
for me to
have been able to be chosen also vice
captain
it's a great honour and it's
you know it gives me goosebumps every
time that i get to wear the armband
and i can and i can step out first and
on the pitch and leave my teammates that
time this is beautiful from arsenal his
young sucker again
that is a brilliant team goal from
arsenal
we're full of confidence and sometimes
confidence just comes from like knowing
where you need to be in every single
time
i think it was another step towards
what we are still building today
[Music]
carol came to arsenal when
i had been here only for a couple of
years and i was still
in the youth team and mikhail was one of
the captains
in the dressing room and he was part of
this spanish speaking group that we had
and he really did look after me and you
know when i was young
i was a bit naughty i started getting
money
um you know i started meeting girls and
i started going now
and all these things that you know that
everyone does at that age
but obviously not everyone has the
responsibility
that i had at that time uh starting to
play for the arsenal first team so
he was somehow like as a big brother and
he
you know when i did something wrong he
looked at me and sometimes when he
looked at me i was like oh
i shouldn't have done that sometimes you
need people to
to be honest with you and to tell you
straight in the face when you're not
doing things
the right way and that can make a big
difference
and then you know we always knew
how good his ideas were because even
when he was still a player i remember uh
in training he
tell us like i would have done this
instead of that or i would change this
or you know if i manage the team i would
play like this and
you know he had very refreshing ideas
and then when he told us that um
pep had offered him a spot to to be
assistant coach he still didn't know if
he wanted to
still play or go and you know i think
he made the right decision i think
everyone's seeing what he has instilled
in
in the club
we had lost against ce in the league
already under mikhail now we were in the
semi-finals we were in wembley
and that was our chance to also you know
learn from that first game
you know secure us a chance to win a
trophy and
mikhail had obviously we're an assistant
coach
to pep at man city so he knows the
minute now
for the whole week we worked so hard and
we had so clear
on our minds what we need to do the good
thing
about that game is that we were very
efficient when we had the chances
we put the game to bed pepe
what's a glorious ball in his obama yang
he's in here
this concealing arsenal doubled their
leads
obama and then in the last few minutes
of the game
we had to defend and defend and defend
but even though that's not the previous
way of playing
it's needed for a team of champions you
need to
know how to suffer and before we didn't
know how to suffer
tactically the coach gave us all the
help
that we needed to get away with the win
and
we finally secured a spot in the in the
final
[Music]
cut final day um
[Music]
we need to win this because
that's not the way this season's going
to finish i'm telling you
what season it's been 1920 season like
from coming back from
injury to then
coronavirus happened having to go on
lockdown
after lockdown having to play with no
fans
and now playing my third final and it's
not gonna be like
nothing to do with the other two that i
played before you know
the fans won't be there
and then it just you know i was able to
play three games in a week for the first
time after lockdown
since since i got injured and i couldn't
couldn't do that before so lockdown
actually left me in a
much better place there was a chance to
make something negative into something
positive something positive something
positive
[Music]
it was going to be tough and you knew
chelsea were a good team and they were
dangerous so
there was a lot of preparation that went
into that game the same as any other
game but
as a final there's always that bit more
[Music]
the start from us wasn't the best they
had
they had a couple of shots and then they
scored and for me when they scored i had
the decision to make like
i could have took him out maybe took a
red card and then he got a penalty and
maybe missed a penalty
but then um we were man down for 85
minutes so i had that decision right
away
i had to stick by it even when they
scored that i had to believe i made the
right decision at the time
oba made a running behind
and yeah he got taken down it was a
penalty
and i just felt like if we scored this
goal
we win this game you know i felt like we
were somehow still in control of the
game
something i would play now is chelsea i
scored on my under-23s w
against chelsea four nfa cups against
chelsea
my acl happened against chelsea i've
scored two goals and i don't score many
against chelsea so it's always like a
game that i always know that something's
going to happen
there's always something to play for you
know it's a game that i
do love playing i love playing chelsea
is a london rivalry they're a top club
somehow in my career it's always been a
team that
there's always been something more than
just a game
the fact that you know having against
chelsea not in terms of
of revenge you know like oh i got
injured i can see you guys now i want to
be you it's not it's not that it was
just more like
coming full circle in the whole recovery
recovery process
mikhail is a coach that wants me to to
drive forward every time i have a
i have a chance just drove forward and i
remember my last touch was just
a bit long but i was going at so much
speed that i was like i need to go for
this challenge you know and i didn't
know
it was going to be a foul for me but i
just remember like
clashing and then um the ball kept
playing
and all of a sudden i just look up and i
see all the scoring and i was just like
whoa
this is happening
[Music]
you know it's like there's no way
they're coming back to this we need to
defend like for our life
[Music]
[Applause]
we won the fa cup and somehow my story
felt complete
really happy coming full circle you know
from the injury
to then winning the fa cup
[Applause]
and it was just a beautiful end to the
season
it's just not worse to describe as a
player how
you can be solo and you know one year
and a few months after
you're back on the top of the world and
you know that's due to the hard work
that
people around me have put in to make
sure that i was back on the pitch as
soon as possible
[Music]
you're thinking back me and hector are
starting in the cup final and
a few months a few months ago we were
like in the darkest days of our life
and going through the toughest times and
to realize that both of us are here like
just let's enjoy this and i think hector
got that message through me
[Music]
coming back and i'm finding it difficult
to stay fit sometimes and it's it's a
hard process to
to go through but the way he kept
fighting and he knew that that was the
process they didn't have to get
frustrated with it
to come back and and and be be part of
the team that
that lasts a fa cup and it's it's it's
a moment to be really proud of to start
come back and win a trophy we both
played in it which was brilliant
and uh it actually turned out to be the
same season as our comeback which was
weird because it was literally a year
later but um yeah it was nice to sort of
finish that
that season and finish it on a trophy uh
onwards and upwards
[Music]
you know it would have been lovely and
nice if i never got injured
and i would have kept playing and you
know things would have been so different
today maybe but also
i probably wouldn't have had the time
to become better in a mental level in a
spiritual level
the thing that i value most and that i
remember most about that time is also
the time that i spend with these people
with these experts or with the physios
or
these people get so invested and they're
so helpful
and none of this would have been
possible or would have been as good as
it was
without their help whether that was
paolo or tim
or rob or kieran or miki
or dr kugat you know
family help you in the moments when
you're at home and
you know when you're in your darkest
times but you know this journey wouldn't
have been
as successful without the help
[Music]
a lot of people have gone through these
injuries and it's a very low percentage
the ones that don't come out
on the other side it's important to talk
about them and it's important for people
to know um this side
of the athlete so
i hope it comes across in that way and
i hope it is helpful for people watching
this
no one to impress just
[Music]
literally and i'm not trying to press
them
show them how it is
[Music]
