💡Smashes

In badminton, 'smashes' refer to powerful downward shots aimed at winning a point by hitting the shuttlecock in such a way that it travels fast and low, making it difficult for the opponent to return. The video discusses five types of smashes, emphasizing their importance as offensive moves in the game and providing tips on when and how to execute them effectively.

💡Standard Smash

The 'standard smash' is a fundamental badminton shot that requires the player to be well-positioned and balanced. It is executed with full body rotation to generate power. The script advises against using it when the opponent's lift is on the back line or when the player is off balance, to avoid defensive counterattacks.

💡Preparation

In the context of the video, 'preparation' pertains to the player's positioning and readiness before executing a smash. It is mentioned that the player should be about half a meter behind the shuttle for optimal power generation through body rotation, akin to setting up a punch in boxing.

💡Rotation

'Rotation' in the script describes the movement of the player's body, including hips, torso, and shoulders, which is crucial for generating power in a smash. The sequence of body parts rotating contributes to the force behind the shot, as highlighted in the tips for improving smash technique.

💡Stick Smash

The 'stick smash' is a variation of the smash that involves less power but allows for more control and accuracy due to its execution without full body rotation. It is used in various positions and is deceptive to opponents, who may anticipate a gentler shot like a drop or clear.

💡Jump Smash

A 'jump smash' is an advanced technique where the player jumps to hit the shuttlecock, providing a higher contact point and a more threatening angle. The video emphasizes the importance of timing and position to execute this move effectively, and it is suggested to be used when the opponent's lift is high enough to allow for the jump.

💡Jump Out Smash

The 'jump out smash' is used to intercept a flat lift before it passes the player, requiring strength and explosiveness. It can be executed on both forehand and backhand sides and is distinguished by keeping the hips facing the net due to the lack of time for a full body rotation.

💡Backhand Smash

A 'backhand smash' is less common but used when a short lift is played to the backhand side. It is executed with a bevel grip to maximize rotation and power, and the script advises using the muscles in the back of the shoulder for an effective whip-like motion.

💡Bevel Grip

The 'bevel grip' is a specific way of holding the racket that allows for better racket face control and power generation in a backhand smash. It is contrasted with the traditional backhand grip in the script, emphasizing its importance for executing powerful backhand shots.

💡Relaxed

Being 'relaxed' is a key tip mentioned for all five types of smashes. It implies maintaining a loose arm and grip until the moment of impact, which is crucial for generating the necessary power and control in the shot. The script suggests that tension can hinder the effectiveness of the smash.

💡Weights Training

The script mentions 'weights training' as a way to improve strength and explosivity, particularly for executing the jump out smash effectively. It is suggested as a means to enhance muscle development, which is essential for absorbing landing impacts and preventing injuries.

Did you know that there are five different  types of Smashes in Badminton and they all

play00:03

have specific times of when they should and  shouldn't be played? Well in this video we're

play00:09

going to show you all five types of smashes and  give you our best tips on how to do these shots

play00:13

successfully and also when to use them! And if you're new here we're Greg and Jenny two

play00:18

professional players releasing regular videos on  all things badminton so let's get straight into smash

play00:24

number one first we have the standard smash and  we're going to start by sharing when you shouldn't

play00:29

use this because a lot of people often get it  wrong so you shouldn't hit this smash when your

play00:34

opponent has lifted onto the back line or your  off balance and out of position this is because

play00:40

if your opponents have good defence it could get  you and your partner if you're playing doubles into trouble!

play00:46

Instead you should wait for the  right opportunity on a shorter lift to use your smash

play00:56

Our first tip to improve your smash  technique and maximize your power is to do

play01:00

with your preparation try to be around half a  meter behind the shuttle this is because a lot

play01:05

of power comes from rotating your body forwards  into the shot if you strike the shuttle slightly

play01:11

behind you then your momentum won't be going  forwards which reduces your power think of

play01:15

it like a punch in boxing you can create a lot  more power using the rotation and momentum of

play01:21

your body compared to just using your arm or even  moving backwards as you punch!

play01:28

That's not to say you can't hit a good smash off balance though  but you do need very good power and placement

play01:34

and it ideally needs to be a winner as you'll  probably have a slower recovery and our second

play01:39

tip is to do with the hitting action you need to  rotate your hips torso and shoulders in a very

play01:45

fast sequence followed by your elbow forearm  and then wrist this rotation and sequence is

play01:51

a huge part of creating good power in your  Smash and we break this all down in a lot

play01:56

more detail in our step-by-step smash tutorial  which will Link in the description below if you

play02:01

want to check it out after this. Our second  type of smash is the stick smash and there

play02:06

are four important differences between this  and the standard smash we've just shown the

play02:10

first is that the stick smash has less power  than the standard smash so why would you choose to play it?

play02:16

Well difference two is that you can  hit the stick smash from a variety of positions

play02:20

when you're in a good position or unlike the  standard smash when you're actually taking it a little later

play02:28

Three is that you don't use your  whole body to rotate in the stick smash which

play02:32

means that you're more in control of your body  so you can hit more accurate shots and recover better

play02:42

Four is the Big Technical difference  as we've said you use your whole body to

play02:47

rotate in the standard smash and your elbow  moves forwards and down as you strike the

play02:51

shuttle but in the stick smash you have  a slower swing speed and then when your

play02:56

elbow is roughly in line with your body it  almost stops and stays in the same position

play03:00

you then use your forearm and squeeze your  grip to snap your wrist over the top of the shuttle

play03:09

This slower swing speed helps make the  shot deceptive as your opponents think you're

play03:13

going to play a drop or a clear but for this  to work you need to be relaxed in your arm and

play03:18

grip if you're really stiff and tense then you  can't create this stick or snap to add the power

play03:24

which completely ruins the shot the third type  of Smash is the jump smash this is one that's

play03:30

really difficult to master but everyone wants to  do there are two main benefits of using a jump

play03:36

smash as opposed to the other four smashes one  is that you have a higher contact point with the

play03:41

shuttle and can create a better angle on your shot  and two is that you can look more threatening and scare your opponents!

play03:50

Our first tip isn't really a  tip it's more of a must you should only use this

play03:55

type of smash when your opponents have hit a high  lift and you have time to get behind the shuttle

play04:00

and then jump up to it if you're behind it but  don't have the time to jump then you can use the

play04:05

standard or stick smash instead and our second tip  for you is that you need to start the jump smash

play04:11

by facing sidewards you then go down into a half  squat to be able to jump up as high as possible as

play04:17

you push off from the ground you should open out  your chest and pull your racket arm back as much

play04:22

as you can which will help you generate a fast  racket swing speed and therefore a more powerful

play04:27

smash okay that was the third time type of Smash  and if you're enjoying this video so far make sure

play04:32

you smash the Subscribe button for more smashing  content coming soon! The fourth type of smash is

play04:38

the jump out smash. In the previous jump smash that  we've just shown you jump up but for this as the

play04:44

name suggests you jump out to the side you can  use this smash on both the forehand and round the

play04:50

head side and you would use it when your opponents have  hit a flat lift and you jump out to intercept the

play04:55

shuttle before it goes too far past you and you  have to take the shuttle late. This shot can be

play05:01

incredibly effective in both singles and doubles  and at all levels of the game but you can only do

play05:07

it if you have good strength and explosivity and  the round the head jump out smash in particular

play05:12

requires strong muscles to be able to absorb your  landing and prevent injuries yes so if you want

play05:17

to improve your ability to jump explosively and  also recover out of this jump then we'd recommend

play05:23

doing badminton specific weights training and we actually  have eight different programmes with printable PDFs

play05:29

and video demonstrations for every exercise  available on our website so we'll include a

play05:34

link in the description below if you want to check  them out and improve your game a key tip for both

play05:39

the forehand and round the head jump out smash is  that unlike the other smashes we've shared so far

play05:45

for this you actually keep your hips facing the  net this is because it's a flat lift so you don't

play05:50

have enough time to do a full body rotation but  you do need to get your elbow back as this helps

play05:56

you still have a fast swing speed! The fifth type  of Smash is the backhand smash this is typically

play06:03

more common in singles but also maybe for lazy  players who automatically turn to take a backhand

play06:09

and it's used when the lift is short so you can  still play an effective shot and you might be

play06:14

wondering, why would you just do a jump out smash  instead? Well you do it when you've either already

play06:19

turned your feet to play a backhand or the shuttle has  already gone past you. We have two key tips to

play06:26

maximize your backhand smash power first although  you might think you should be in a backhand grip

play06:31

to hit a backhand smash that's actually not right  you need to be in a bevel grip which allows you to

play06:37

create maximum rotation and therefore power and  second to generate even more power you need to

play06:43

use the muscles in the back of your shoulder which  you've now developed thanks to our weights programmes

play06:47

you then need to rotate your forearm like this and not  like this so the bottom half of the forearm this

play06:55

enables you to generate that whip and an important  point is that you need to be really relaxed until

play07:01

the last millisecond which is actually a key part  of all five smashes we've shown in this video!

play07:07

And whilst it's great to have all five smashes in your arsenal we think the most important ones

play07:12

to learn are the standard smash and the jump out  smash because these are the ones you should use

play07:17

in every game yeah and if you want some advice  on your smash we're preparing a video where we

play07:22
