Q & A
What is the significance of AI in 2023 according to the transcript?
-In 2023, AI has taken center stage, especially with the rise of large language models like GPT, followed by other AI tools, making it the 'year of AI' and a frequent topic of discussion.
Why is it not necessary for every leader to become an AI expert?
-Becoming an AI expert requires deep knowledge and experience, which cannot be acquired quickly. Leaders should focus on understanding the implications of AI for their organization rather than mastering the technical details.
What is the main focus for leaders regarding AI?
-Leaders should focus on what they will do with AI, including how it can be integrated into their business models, the ethical considerations, and its impact on organizational structures and human interaction.
What ethical discussions should leaders consider regarding AI?
-Leaders should discuss the ethical implications of AI, such as the extent of human interaction in customer support, the use of AI for creative tasks like scriptwriting, and the potential for AI to replace human roles in negotiations and decision-making.
How might AI change organizational structures?
-AI could lead to new organizational structures where AI tools handle tasks like procurement negotiations, potentially reducing the need for human involvement and leading to a reevaluation of job roles and responsibilities.
What are the potential implications of AI tools handling procurement negotiations?
-If AI tools manage procurement negotiations, it could lead to negotiations between AI tools of different companies, raising questions about the need for human oversight and the ethical implications of fully automated negotiations.
How should organizations prepare for the shift towards AI in business processes?
-Organizations should ask the right questions about the implications of AI on their business models, consider how to reallocate human resources, and explore new tasks or roles for employees whose jobs are automated.
What scenarios might require human involvement despite AI capabilities?
-High-risk situations might still require human involvement due to the emotional and ethical considerations that AI may not fully account for, or conversely, machines might be preferred for their rational decision-making in high-stakes scenarios.
How should leaders approach the decision to use AI in high-risk situations?
-Leaders should have discussions about whether AI or humans should handle high-risk situations, considering the rationality and data-driven nature of AI versus the emotional and ethical judgment of humans.
What is the role of AI in the future of customer support?
-AI could play a significant role in customer support by handling routine inquiries through chatbots, but leaders must consider the balance between AI efficiency and the need for human empathy and interaction.
How can AI impact the creation of content like scripts and videos?
-AI tools can assist in writing scripts and even producing videos, potentially reducing the need for human creators. However, the ethical and creative implications of AI-generated content should be considered.
Outlines
🤖 Understanding AI as a Leader
The speaker discusses the importance of understanding AI for leaders in 2023, emphasizing that AI knowledge is not about becoming a technical expert but about understanding the implications of AI on business and ethical considerations. Leaders should focus on what AI can do for their organization and the ethical implications of its use, rather than the technical details.
⚖️ Ethical Considerations and AI
The speaker explores the ethical questions surrounding AI implementation, such as replacing human interaction in customer support with advanced chatbots and creating non-human interactive content. Leaders need to consider whether these changes are desirable and prepare for the implications, such as potential job displacement and the need for new organizational structures.
🤔 Human vs. AI Decision-Making
The speaker highlights the debate over whether AI or humans should handle high-risk situations. While AI can make rational decisions based on data, humans bring emotional and ethical considerations. Leaders must discuss and decide the appropriate balance between AI and human involvement in various scenarios, focusing on the broader implications for their organization and workforce.

Transcripts
what should i as a leader know about
AI probably a question that I've heard
many many times this year especially
this year it's 2023 it's the year of AI
since jet GPT took over the stage and
now followed by their friends from um
from clothed and B and you you have it
whatever kind of AI tool you prefer so
what should you know as a leader about
AI is is not a very easy question
because if we just look at all these um
chat tools that that I just mentioned
this is just like one part of artificial
intelligence in this case large language
models but there's there's quite a lot
to to learn about artificial
intelligence and it would be probably
also the wrong approach to say every
leader every manager every executive
should be now an AI expert as the
internet sometimes portrays right that
everybody now is an AI expert but the
feel of AI is actually something that
that is developing since since many many
years
and what can be an expert in one field
doesn't necessarily mean that that you
can have this in like a weekend course
the important part about technology in
general but especially AI as a leader as
a manager is probably not the obvious
technical questions that many people put
in the room because there are great
smart people out there that are sitting
Labs that are developing all the
algorithms and all the the tools behind
that but what we as leaders should focus
on and as business Executives is what
are we going to actually do with that
it's not that every company on this
planet will build their own AI models in
the future it will be most likely that
there will be infrastructures for for
artificial intelligence that we pluck
into but then the question is what are
we going to do with that and with that
we come more into ethical discussion
right what is right or wrong to do with
artificial intelligence think about
customer support functions right we
could easily put back in the day's
chatbots now we have more sophisticated
chatbots um we can use that right
there's no more human interaction
involved we can use AI tools to write
scripts for for videos we could use AI
tools to um write our homework right we
could use that then to also produce
videos like that it doesn't really
require me anymore being physically
sitting here on the sofa on the apps
campus to record this video there is
also like options out there to create a
digital version of myself in this case
or someone else write a nice script
using chat GPD or whatever kind of tool
you prefer putting this all together and
creating the fully nonhuman interative
video lecture all possible question is
do we want to do this maybe
I don't know we will see what what the
future unfolds but how will this lead to
new organizational structures in the end
think about it if you have for example
an AI tool in place to do your
procurement negotiation with your
suppliers what if your supplier then
also says okay if they are using an AI
tool that is negotiating with me why
don't I build my own AI tool that
negotiates with their AI tool and all of
a sudden we have negotiations between
two companies fully facilitated by two
AI tools without any human being
involved at all is this good is this bad
I don't know but we should have this
discussion right because this is a
decision to take out in this case human
interaction out of a value
stream again is this good or bad we
don't know but we need to be prepared
for that we need to ask the right
questions what are the implications then
on our business model what are we going
to do with all the people in the
procurement Department in this example
that used to do the negotiation if now
this is being done by tools and probably
only 10% of these tool-based
negotiations goes back to to a desk of a
human being for a final review so
probably all of a sudden you have a lot
of human capacity that is all of a
sudden available what do you do with
that are you just firing the people
could be an answer or are you finding
some kind of a new job for them do they
find like new task what does it mean
because we need to really prepare for
that as an organization we will ask
these questions all the time and then we
need to also go into the edges right
what are the scenarios where we probably
want to have a human being involved
think about like a highrisk situation
maybe it's better in this highrisk
situation that a human being is being
being involved or maybe not maybe it's
the complete opposite where we say like
oh if there's a lot at stake if the risk
is very high then probably machines
should take over because they are
rational right they take data they take
the facts that they have been fed with
and come to a rational conclusion based
on these data that is available a human
being probably has a more emotional
process to that right probably takes
some kind of different approach that is
more aligned with their individual
ethical proposition so maybe it makes
sense to say like oh in high risk
situations we take machines or AI Tools
in low risk situations we take human
beings or vice versa I don't know the
answer to that probably you don't know
the answer either but we need to have
these discussions and that's why we not
need to understand all the technological
nitty-gritty and details of artificial
intelligence as a leader as an executive
as a manager but we need to understand
what these nitty-gritties
imply for our world what will that mean
for us in the organization what will
this mean for our own work and what will
this mean for the work and the
environment around us that are the
questions that we really need to ask as
leaders and that we really need to dive
into when we talk about AI it's not not
only about the tech the tech is the
smallest part someone else will figure
that out but we need to re building on
this implication level for the
organization for the human beings and
for the
business
