Transcripts
hey kids and parents it's Pastor Lisa
and I'm just coming to you from my
office and I wanted to answer some of
the questions that I get asked most
often about baptism I understand that if
you're watching this video you and your
child have talked about baptism and I'm
here to help you as you kind of figure
this out together so that you're all
ready to go when it's time for your
child's baptism so parents kids here we
go so here's the first question that I
get asked what is baptism well baptism
is a symbol now what is a symbol symbol
is something that stands for something
else
this is an example that I use all the
time it's my wedding ring so my wedding
ring I wear on my left finger and that's
a symbol that I am what it means I'm
married right now it's not my husband on
my finger right it's a symbol that's
kind of a way to explain that baptism
shows on the outside something that's
going on on the inside so when you're
baptized the water is a symbol of Jesus
who has washed your sins away just like
when you ask Jesus to forgive you of
your sins and your sins were washed away
now guys there's nothing special about
this water it's just warm water but when
you're baptized it can be a very very
special moment so that is our first
question about baptism
guys here's our next question why should
I get baptized well the Bible tells us
uh that before Jesus began his ministry
John the Baptist who was his cousin
started preaching and he was making a
way for people to come to know Jesus he
was saying that everyone needed to
repent that means ask for forgiveness of
their sins and turn from them and be
baptized in water I'm going to have you
pause this video and read about that in
Mark chapter 1 verses one through eight
okay pause your video guys
many people came and they repented of
their sins and John baptized them and
then he talked about someone greater who
was coming who knows who that was that's
right it was Jesus and later in Mark
chapter one we see that Jesus also came
to John and asked to be baptized but
Jesus had never sinned so why would he
do that he didn't need to confess his
sins or repent he didn't have any sin
all right so we're going to read another
passage we're going to pause the video
again and we're going to read Mark
chapter 1 verses 9 through 11.
Jesus asked to be baptized by John to
show everyone that he was giving himself
fully to God and the Bible says that
when John baptized Jesus that the Holy
Spirit came and rested on Jesus and God
spoke a word from Heaven can you imagine
that must have been absolutely amazing
so if Jesus thought that baptism was
that important what does that mean to us
what do you think guys
that's right it means it should be
important to us too if Jesus showed that
it was important it should be important
to us so Jesus did something much later
about baptism he issued a command Jesus
can give us a command in Matthew chapter
28 verses 18 to 20. what do you think
we're going to do that's right we're
gonna pause the video and we're gonna
read it go ahead and do that now
now that you read that what did Jesus
say that's right he said make disciples
and do what
baptize them so it is important when
Jesus gives us a command it's very
important that we listen to that and we
obey so that's why baptism is important
it means we are obeying Jesus and we are
showing people on the outside what Jesus
has done on the inside we're obeying
Jesus and we're showing other people
what Jesus has done all right oh there
went my paper let's see what the next
question is
so the next question is what happens
when I get baptized and I get more
questions about this every time I get to
meet with kids and families so I'm going
to explain it there will be a tank and
it's filled with warm water and for
those of you who know what the chapel
looks like it's actually backstage so we
open that place up and there will be
stairs that you walk up and you'll walk
down into the tank and you'll sit I'll
help you do that it's either me or if
you ask for another Pastor to baptize
you and we'll make sure that you're
comfortable and that you're sitting in
the tank really really comfy and then
we're going to ask you to share a little
bit about why you want to be baptized
you can say whatever comes to your mind
in your heart right then but it's
important that you understand why you're
being baptized so usually people will
say something like I love Jesus and I
want to follow him and I want everybody
to know or I am so thankful that Jesus
washed my sins away and now I want
everybody to know some people will say I
want everyone to understand how
wonderful Jesus is and what he's done
for me okay so once you've done that
whoever is baptizing you whether that's
me or someone else will kind of help you
get comfortable and you can take your
hand and plug your nose if you want to
and then we'll kind of hold on to your
hand and make you comfy and then you'll
very quick quickly get dunked down into
the water and will bring you right back
up okay we won't hold you down in the
water you won't be uncomfortable we'll
make sure that you're comfortable and
then you can stand up carefully and
you'll walk right up the stairs and you
can go right to the bathroom and change
your clothes we want you to be
comfortable and we want you to know that
you're safe and everything is all set
for you so that your family and your
friends can enjoy seeing you baptized
and we'll have people there cheering you
on and all excited for you
right here is our last question what
happens if I have questions that weren't
answered in this video oh my goodness
that can happen right well here's what
happens you can just ask you can talk to
your mom or your dad and you can always
ask to talk to me and I'll sit down with
you and your parent and we'll talk about
whatever questions you're worried about
it's important to me that you know that
you're getting baptized for a specific
reason and that reason is because you've
decided that you want Jesus to be the
Lord and the leader of your life and
it's also very important to me that you
feel comfortable with what you're doing
and you understand it and that you feel
safe so I want all of your questions to
be answered and anything that we haven't
talked about in this video I want you to
feel free to talk to your mom or your
dad about it and then if you need to we
can also talk hey I am so excited for
you I want you to know that Jesus loves
you so much and I love you too thanks
for watching and hopefully I'll see you
soon
