Transcripts
ah I'll say this now if you're hardcore
about photography you hate vlogging you
hate vertical videos and you're
celebrating the ban of Tik Tok then just
ignore this camera all right Gramps it's
5:00 p.m. and it's way past your bedtime
you don't need to get angry over this
for the rest of you this is the brand
new Sony zb1 Mark II and this being the
second version of the highly praised
budget vlogging camera I'm going to have
to be a lot more critical towards this
and boy do we have a r coming up two to
be exact but just to get this out of the
way this is a laner unit from Sony I do
not get to keep it I'm not getting paid
nor have I ever gotten paid for any
camera reviews and like you they are
seeing my vong opinion for the first
time look and feel I'll start off by
saying this camera fuse really light in
the hands especially when you pair it
with the new 16 to 50 mm kit lens see
there's a two right here too although
it's made with more plastic based
components this old overall packages
feels so good to hold the grip here is
chunkier and deeper making it easier to
latch onto and the increase in grip here
is also because it is now using the
bigger Z batteries can I get a hell yeah
more juice for more shoots oh hell yeah
now I definitely don't want to be
overselling this if you've always have a
grip problem with small Sony cameras um
Michael with your big ass hands always
complain the lack of a pinky grip then
you're still not going to like this and
of course the moment you start adding
bigger and longer lenses your handling
experience would definitely go down keep
the lenses small and light and you'll
have a good time and thankfully there
are plenty of small and light apsc
lenses that exists buttons and
ergonomics background defocus and
product showcase the two exclusive zv
button features are back background
defocus background defocus is a shortcut
that helps you blur and debr the
background but as always it's not
software blurring like you would get
from smartphones so in order to see an
obvious difference you would want to use
a lens with a fast aperture like this 15
mm f1.4 here and product showcase just
disables face and eye autofocus so you
don't have to awkwardly block your face
when you're trying to show off your
product eh is it working you see the
camera not my face right but the same
problem also returns you cannot enable
and disable product showcase while
you're recording which in my opinion
deats the whole purpose of this shortcut
right like I'm talking right now I want
to show you this product I would have to
turn off recording turn on product
showcase hit the record button again
show you the product turn off recording
turn off product showcase hit the record
button back it just breaks the flow of
recording which then you might as well
just have covered your face just to make
this whole process a lot
smoother and while we're being critical
here I hate this Zoom Rocker with a
passion my favorite camera of all time
and the bigger sibling to this camera
the zv1 are also has this rocker that we
would always accidentally nudge and have
a more zoomed in view than we would want
okay let me just backtrack a little bit
and explain with some examples and
context because this issue pertains more
for video users and consider this the
first rant it's not the main rant but
the first rant you see both cameras are
defaulted to using clear image zoom and
clear image Zoom is like a digital Zoom
but more enhanced by Sony's secret
algorithm and it provides better Clarity
and detail essentially no quality loss
it's amazing because it gives you an
extra Bit Of Reach with any lenses Sony
video users for the past decade have
really enjoyed this feature for example
this new power Zoom 16 to 50 mm once you
zoom up to 50 mm optically with clear
image Zoom you get up to an extra 1 and
1 half times reach in 4k giving you a 75
mm feudo view equivalent this works with
prime lenses and this works with your
standard Barrel twisting zoom lenses
again with no huge quality loss however
with where the positioning of this Zoom
rocker is you can easily nudge it let's
say for example I have this 24 mm f1.8
Prime on without turning on any
stabilization I have all my 24 mm view
but without knowing we nudge this rocker
by accident so when we start filming we
wouldn't realize we just made this lens
into a 35 mm view while there are no
huge quality loss I still lost some of
my framing when I didn't want or have to
and this happens way more often than I
would like to admit on my
zv1 there are no visible warning signs
that youve triggered clear image Zoom
other than this small magnifying symbol
here at the top which is easily missable
and you would get this warning right
here on the right depending on how you
cycle through your onscreen display info
you see with older Sony cameras you have
these dotted borders around that
warrants you when you're using clear
image Zoom I don't know why they took
that away but now we have this potential
easily replicable issue for anyone so
the only solution here is to change this
option to optical zoom and avoid using
clear image Zoom all together which
sucks because it's a great feature to
use but this Zoom rocker here is poorly
implemented so please Sony please let us
disable this Zoom rocker anyways rant
over until the next one one on the other
hand the greatest area of improvement is
this moo right here with the first
version is just a bun to cycle through
photo video and slow and quick that's
the slow motion and time-lapse function
now the biggest complaint was that
people would accident hit that button
and then they go and record a video
thinking they're recording a regular
video with sound but it turns out that
they're recording in
slow
mo with
oh now you don't have to worry about
that again this ticker has a lot of
frictions so hopefully less accidental
operations but here's a suggestion to
Sony you know how you can enable red
borders when you record videos well
maybe we could do a blue or green or
even purple border when you're in snq
mode just any type of more obvious
indicator that you're in a different
mode but that's just more on the
software side of
things we have all the same peripherals
on the side including USBC handy because
I doubt this camera comes with a
dedicated charger but the SD card slot
now has been moved from being close to
the battery to now being on the left
side which is very nice so I'm not going
to list out every peripherals on the
side but uh we we'll probably throw it
up on the screen LCD screen we of course
have the articulating flipout screen
nothing new and because this uses the
new 2.0 Sony menu system we can now make
our display even brighter with sunny
weather and still have great colors even
while shooting in 4k huge improvement
over the last version but while it does
help out slightly in bright conditions
nothing compares to having an electronic
viewfinder but that's just one of the
main factors that really distinguishes
the zv series from the regular Alpha
Series so I won't ding them too hard on
that as a matter of fact a lot of camera
nerds will probably be very critical
about this camera for not having enough
custom buttons a front di or even a
joystick but they tend to forget that
this is Sony's lower-end Baseline MTO so
I think it's okay for them to miss a few
knickknacks and a lot of it actually is
made up by having a fully operable touch
functioning screen menu so now you can
navigate the main menu via touch if you
want if you're using Focus points you
can move the focus block by touch as
well so no need for joystick you can
also change your shutter aperture
exposure comp ISO and white balance via
touch so no need for extra dial and if
you're a complete beginner in
intelligent auto mode the bottom right
corner right here you have a feature
called my image style much like
operating your camera on a smartphone
you can adjust the blur the brightness
the temperature and filter all via touch
sliders and like most smartphone cameras
the parameters you adjust would
disappear when you close out of it you
now have an onscreen UI that features a
variety of shortcuts here on the side
sadly these are not customizable as far
as I know because there are a handful of
shortcuts that are redundant here like
the record button the zoom the playback
and product showcase but good thing the
physical buttons here themselves are
reprogrammable and if you find these
onscreen UI to be too cluttering you can
swipe them away just make sure to swipe
closer to the edge of the screen or you
can of course disable them entirely via
the
menu and guys check this out Vero UI
about time right now there going to be a
flood of comments by users with the
other models asking Sony vertical UI
firmware when and yes I very much agree
because I would like this on my other
cameras when I make my Instagram Rios
but now that vertical UI is finally a
thing means Sony is embracing the fact
that people recording more vertical
videos these days which begs the
question when are camera companies
implementing the quarter inch 20 screw
hole here on the side as well where I
think it makes the most sense would be
the grip side right here that way the
screen and the peripherals here are not
obstructed I'm sure there are way more
engineering that needs to be involved
but I'm just talking with my dumb
consumer mind and they just need to make
this happen the customer is always right
of course some would say just buy a cage
or an L bracket but more casual folks
would not want to make their cameras
more bulkier than it needs to be so I'll
leave that problem for the engineers to
solve but yes buy a cage or an L bracket
but overall a huge Improvement in terms
of
ergonomics
autofocus uh honestly not much for me to
go over here Sony autofocus is
notoriously goated face and eye
autofocus is incredibly Snappy and
that's all you really need in fact I
just published my Essential guide to
mastering Sony autofocus so click right
here to queue it up however it does not
have the new AI subject recognition
autofocus found in the more recent mods
from the other series like the a6700 A7
C2 a7c so no bug car train and plane
autofocus not that we really need it it
does have human animal and bird which is
planty enough and it works great in both
photo and video
mode video capability so there are lots
to be excited about and one big thing to
be disappointed about again rant coming
up so this camera does have 4K 60 frames
per second yes good happy to see it
becoming a standard no 4K 120 but that's
okay I don't think this camera really
needs it now the 4K is over sampling for
5.6k which means the sensor is
technically shooting in 5.6k but jammed
up in a 4K box so the visuals look extra
crispy there is no crop from 4K 24p to
4K 30p but there is a slight crop when
you're filming in 4k 60p just some info
to keep in mind and if you're planning
on color grading heavily we can record
in 10 bit 422 in a variety of different
formats even SN Q are going to look so
much better with the new 10bit all right
a lot of technical mumbo jumbo right
there if you're just filming videos
casually though don't worry about it
stick with xavc s4k or HD 8bit
420 those nerdy numbers only mean
something to the serious cinematic video
makers that want to color
grade Cog but if you do want to dabble
in making some cinematic movies Sony
does have the Cog feature which is a
more casual experience that gives you
that cinematic look right away they
automatically put black bars on the top
and bottom of your footage giving you
the 23 5x1 cinematic aspect ratio
essentially a very Ultra wide looking
screen it does lock you in 24 frames per
second automatically but that is the
Cinematic movie frame rate if the
footage is looking choppy here that's
why we're mixing frame rates we here at
Jason vong Hollywood Studios have
transitioned over to 30 frames per
second videos but if you edit an export
in 24 frames per second it should look
pretty good there are a few cinematic
looks for you to choose from with
different color tones but you can also
import your own look via Luts and this
mode honestly is really fun if you want
the Cinematic feeling footage easy slog
3 workflow now for folks who are looking
for a more advanced cinematic workflow
slock 3 has never been easier to work
with very similar to the zv1 a6700 and
some of their FX cameras you can import
and preview the Luts while filming an
slog 3 to ensure you have the correct
white balance color and exposure and you
can import up to 16 Lots that's nuts you
have to try these nuts and I know some
of you are going to ask but no you still
can't take photos in s log 3 with these
Luts recording test and overheating so
let's go ahead and run some long
recording tests starting off with 4K 24
P10 bit 422 in the xavc HS format we
nearly filled up a 128 GB SD card
capturing over 2 hours of footage before
the battery Juiced out on us with 4K 30p
10bit 422 in the xavc SI format we fill
up the same 120 GB card with roughly 55
minutes of footage with no heat warning
or over Heating and the same goes for 4K
60p 10 bit 422 in both the HS and Si
format card filled with no heat problems
now keep in mind this is done in a room
temperature controlled environment your
experience will vary depending on where
you shoot however it has been humid in
Tokyo these days and I've done plenty of
intermittent 4K recording outside with
no heat warning or overheating the
camera did get warm but was never forced
shut off and I would consider this
pretty amazing for a small but powerful
camera IIs all right here comes my
second rant the main rant the zve E10
Mark I does not have inbody image
stabilization wait there's no
Ibis so inbody image stabilization or
IIs for short is when there is
stabilization mechanism built into the
camera which really helps smooth out
video footage when you're handholding
the camera the a6700 has it the fx30 has
it but not the zv E10 Mark I which I
would argue would have been a massive
Improvement that it needed from The Mark
1 instead it's opting to rely only on
active electronic image stabilization so
software not Hardware
stabilization so let me review this
really quick and I'll get into why that
is a problem so active electronic image
stabilization is actually pretty good
I've tested lenses with no Optical
steady shot built-in and OSS is just a
fancy acronym for lenses with built-in
stabilization 9 mm with stabilization
off so here's me walking and talking
with the LA 9mm manual focus lens as any
vlogger would do from 2016 9 mm with
active stabilization even with active
stabilization turned on it's still wide
enough to fit my whole face in and it
looks pretty
smooth here's one demo with the Sony 15
mm F1 .4g lens and I'll give you a
second to
watch also fairly decent and here's a
stress test with the new 16 to 50 mm kit
lens zoomed into 50 mm in telephoto view
the shakes become a lot more
apparent but the footage on the right
with active stabilization is noticeably
less
shaky very nice so I'll give this camera
that active image stabilization is
pretty good but here's here's the
problem close I'm sure you've noticed
the cropping is absolutely atrocious
when you enable active stabilization
it's almost a 1.4 times crop on top of
that you also suffer a bit of a crop
when you shoot in 4k 60p this is 4K 60
with active stabilization so combine
that with active stabilization and
you're seeing an upwards of 1.5 times
crop in total hopefully around the same
arm distance too and while I praise how
good the active electronic image
stabilization is it doesn't matter when
you have to lose so much of your framing
just to compensate for the shakes you
won't lose much image quality though
because of that 6K down sampling but
still this new kit lens here is already
not fit for selfie vlogging and for
years we've been saying 16 mm on apsc is
not wide enough for vlogging and now the
active stabilization crop will make it
much worse thankfully the new kit lens
does have OSS so you don't have to use
active
stabilization now you can go out and buy
a wider lens like a 10 to 20 mm G or the
11 mm f1.8 but it defeats the purpose of
owning an ultra wide angle lens just to
only use it with that egregious crop not
to say I won't or can't recommend the zv
E10 Mark II people are still going to
buy this camera but for lens choices I'm
going to have to make different
recommendations so you'll need to find
lenses with Optical steady shot but the
problem problem is Sony and even
thirdparty lens companies haven't
developed any new lenses with OSS in a
very long time for example the famous
Sigma 1850mm f2.8 highly recommended
across the board no OSS sat reacts only
with active stabilization in 4k 60p this
lens becomes about a 27 to 75 mm or 40.5
to 112.5 mm fullframe Feud of view
equivalent which at the starting end of
it is way too close for a versatile
mid-range zoom lens like this now don't
get me wrong there are still a good
selection of OSS lenses they're a bit
old but optically they're still decent
and you'll find a ton of great deals in
the secondhand market for a super ultra
wide angle lens try to find the old Sony
10 to 18 mm F4 OSS still a very goated
lens in standard stabilization you can
still enjoy all that 10 mm goodness with
no cropping compromises compromises for
mid-range zooms you actually don't have
to setle for an old lens the Tamron 17
to 70 mm f2.8 which came out a few years
ago is nice albeit a bit big for
something smaller I highly recommend the
Zeiss 16 to 7 mm F4 but others have also
really enjoyed the 18 to 105 mm F4 both
OSS for fast primes there are the 35 and
50 mm f1.8 OSS
but anyways I'd rather Sony give us
inbody image stabilization in this
camera so we wouldn't have to worry
about getting specific lenses or worry
about the immense active stabilization
crop I don't know maybe Sony wants to
keep a gap between this and the a6700
and the fx30 which is fine I get it but
they should have updated osss lenses at
the very least bottom line no Ibis makes
me angry but mainly just
sad load light and I'll tack this on
right here while the zv1 Mark II can go
up to as high as ISO 32,000 if you have
active stabilization turned on your max
ISO and video will be capped at 6400
this may not necessarily be a bad thing
as I would generally not go past ISO
6400 for apsc cameras but just something
to keep in mind built-in microphone like
the zv1 there are several mic dir
activities that you can choose from all
right I'm recording to get the best on
board M quality microphone dirity do you
have it on oh right now I
auto all around and rear but since we're
keeping the section short I've always
recommended using a more dedicated
microphone like a shotgun mic or a l mic
to get the best audio quality possible
but of course the best audio is always
going to come from a dedicated
microphone like this LOF mic right here
can you hear me from over here probably
not photo capabilities and yes the zv
E10 Mark II can take photos 26 Maps raw
and JPEG but sadly compared to the zv
E10 this second version does not have a
mechanical shutter just electronic this
can be considered a downgrade since the
first zve E10 had it now I'm not going
to be too hard on this fact because I've
always felt the zv series have always
been intended for video only but here's
why not having mechanical shutter can be
a bad thing the zve 10 Mark II uses
electronic only shutter which is
equivalent is shooting in silent mode on
the other Sony camera models and so in
certain LED lighting conditions you will
see dark lines or what we would call
banding in your photos and it has
happened to me when I was using this
camera specifically C exhibit a and
exhibit B as we toggle it back and forth
It's subtle but the banding is there and
if you're using Flash the shutter speed
won't go past 130 but in natural light
it's fine
[Music]
I've shot plenty of photos with my zb1
which is the exact same thing in regards
to photos and haven't noticed anything
too drastic at least casually but for
Pro work I would definitely go for
something else in the Alpha Series like
the
a6700 price and what Jason recommended
so it's going to be
$999 body only
$1,099 with the new kit lens o o that is
a huge price increase compared to the
launch of the first version which is
only $6.99 USD now I'm not going to
pretend I understand the current
economic state of the market right now
but what I do know is that there has
been price increases in the camera
industry in general so take that as you
will but man the pricing is pretty steep
for no inbody image stabilization and
it's really hard for me to recommend
this camera without also recommending
specific lenses with Optical steady shot
because otherwi wise it's a fantastic
camera with all the modern upgrades that
it needs updated menu brighter screen
better touch support increased battery
life and more enhanced video workflow
between the Mark 1 and the Mark I Nob
brainer I go for the mark I just for all
the quality of life improvements and if
this is just going to be on tripods for
life even better however I would highly
highly highly recommend the Sony
a6700 for $400 more you get an
electronic View finder a mechanical
shutter 4K 120 frames per second and
most importantly inbody image
stabilization and that alone you will
never have to worry about buying a lens
without Optical steady shot and the
a6700 offers a much better user
