behind the pop stars and worldwide hit
songs there is one man that stands Above
the Rest most people don't know of him
but everyone knows his work today we're
taking a look at the biggest songwriter
in the world you probably recognize
these
songs
C you been you're hot and you're cold
what do you want for
me I knew you
into the
room
me God
is they were all written or co-written
by Max Martin and yes I'm ready to dub
him the best songwriter in the world I
just saw him live actually this weekend
was amazing I'm going to share a little
bit of what he said in that open session
in this video but we're also going to be
looking at this entire the story of this
amazing amazing musician so all the
previous songs were huge International
hits but none of them reached the number
one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but
27 of his other songs did 27 in 2024 he
also claimed the top spot for the most
number one producer credits crazy so we
have George Martin and Dr Luke as well
today we will explore Max Martin's
career through the 27 number one songs
he
wrote this is his first number
one I still believe
what I lose my mind give me
[Music]
a wait my researcher has done such a
great job with this video okay car
Martin sandb was born 26th of February
1971 that's how you pronounce it I'm
also from Sweden so I would know uh he
grew up in Stan Hamra in Stockholm
County in Sweden his mother was a middle
school teacher and his father a police
officer Martin was a student of Sweden's
public music education scheme and once
said that he had public music education
to thank for everything as a teenager he
got into glamrock and in 1985 he became
the frontman and lead singer of the band
it's alive at that time he adopted the
stage name Martin white I didn't know
that
actually walk in my
world I make
[Music]
I just I just love the nip the nip out
here and that's when I saw him this
weekend he did not give me nipples out
Vibe but that's so funny but Martin s b
had a terrible secret when he couldn't
share with the rest of the band he loved
pop music I couldn't admit to my friends
that I liked it he said in 1993 his
Bandit alive got signed by cherron
records their album flopped and they got
dropped dropped but the owner Dennis pop
successful DJ and also legendary
songwriter by the way saw potential in
Max Martin and invited him to hang
around shayron Studios to learn I spent
2 years day and night in that studio
trying to learn what the hell was going
on he later recalls I didn't even know
what a producer did it's crazy to think
that at some point even the most
successful producers in the world didn't
know what the job even was that's so
crazy and obvious but also crazy somehow
seeing someone as amazing and successful
as Max Martin can sometimes make me feel
a bit small literally any songwriter or
musician would probably have a tough
time just comparing themselves to him
for me I think it connects to the fact
that one of my personal challenges is
that I'm always feeling like I'm not
focusing on the right thing or doing the
right thing fomo has been a huge source
of stress in my life I see songwriter
friends do awesome things I see YouTuber
friends do awesome things I see friends
not in any of those fields being a lot
less stressed or focusing on family or
building great friendships and I feel
like I'm having a hard time being
content or happy with my choices feeling
like they were the right ones now that
is why I'm back in therapy and it really
helps to be able to talk to someone else
about this stuff my therapist helps me
refrain away from what everyone else is
doing and focusing on what will help me
feel happy on a day-to-day basis and
long term even though it's definitely a
work in progress and I still sometimes
struggle with this stuff if you want to
get started dealing with your fomo or
stress or anything else about your

Dennis Pop came out with the pseudonym
Max Martin and together they wrote and
produced several successful songs in the
'90s
[Music]
I love this kind of like pop rock thing
they had going
on so clearly Rock
[Music]
inspired maybe not this
[Music]
actually didn't know this was
him that is the first Baseline I ever
learned uh
the that's so
[Music]
sick so
[Music]
sick throughout this video I'm also
going to read out some of the notes that
I got from the seminar this weekend that
he held up in Stockholm these are some
things that I think are applicable to
pretty much any field even if you're a
songwriter if you're not he said there's
a lot of talk of his math or like
melodic math but the way math is
relevant to him is spending extreme time
on music instead of partying or whatever
he would just kind of work on his stuff
he told the story of being in this
rehearsal space that's a kid and you
know his friends being like Oh you know
let's go a party and whatever let's go
out to grab a beer or whatever and he
would in his mind think like yeah you do
that I do this and like stay and work on
his music like he said he with a little
bit of stank I thought it was really
funny during that time Max Martin also
wrote this hit song by himself proving
that he could stand on his own okay
let's have a
listen just the biggest boy band hit
ever pretty
[Music]
much as you love me who you are where
you're from
what so that's funny because she was
talking about that this weekend when I
saw him live and he said that he used to
sit on the subway by himself on the way
to the studio and just music would pop
into his head like Melodies and stuff
and he had this entire song in his head
but he had forgotten his dictaphone that
he was using nowadays I think he uses a
phone if he comes up with anything like
that but anyway when he wrote this he
didn't have it so he just ran into the
studio like does anyone ever quar
anything cuz he had to try to memorize
it on the tube all the way Max and
Dennis were responsible for the whole
birth of Backstreet Boys our sound
whatever encompassed the backst street
boys was Max and Dennis Dennis pop sadly
passed away from cancer in 1997 just
before Martin would achieve his first
billboard number one with Baby One More
Time as soon as Dennis passed away Max
kind of took the torch and just kept
moving forward and he done nothing but
make the most amazing music I think of
all time of our generation of
generations to come Max is a genius and
he really truly is a genius and we owe
everything especially in our our career
to him after Dennis Pop's death Chron
Studios was closed down and Martin
opened up maratone and continued the
Legacy as per Pop's wishes so deep it's
so
beautiful okay second number one
single to
still a classic people bring it up every
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
May so sick I think at this time as well
he was kind of mixing and everything
himself as well like going really need a
gritty into the production I mean
nowadays obviously he would have a lot
more of a you know I'm not I'm not even
sure how much he produces himself
anymore but from what I understand this
is very much Max just like going really
hard by himself after his second
billboard number one it would take
Martin another 8 years before achieving
it again but he still managed to write
five songs that hit the top 10 in that
period reminder to Keep On the Grind
eight years without another number
one oh yeah good song
too this is the quintessential 90 snare
[Music]
drum another thing Max said at the
seminar this weekend was that nothing
beats the feeling in the room when a
song is done and everyone is happy that
matters way more than chart performance
or whatever that's just icing of the
cake but nothing beats that moment when
the song is done and you're like yes
first thing I learned about Max as a
singer was this thing this freaking hand
this hand like there was a certain
Rhythm that you had that that Max heard
yeah I could totally see that did you
hear that
the do it it's like super slow that like
[Music]
so short no one would ever sing it like
that without like being coached I feel
like you'd be like kept you in the dark
but this was like kept you in the dark
like
super if you were singing it like off or
you were singing in your own rhythm in
your own way it was always on the top
yeah Max would say no no no do it again
right here right
here I love that so much
guys this is number
[Music]
[Applause]
two
I'm
piey it
pretend thought you were
the oo production started to sound good
now listen to that
snare mess with me tonight just stop and
take a second I was
I mean it always sounded good but that
had like more of a modern snap to
[Music]
it these are
great so basically made a lot of Pink's
career
[Music]
too on July 5th 2008 Max Martin finally
achieved his third number one
song oh
okay another career made he got so many
career making songs think about it like
baby one more time I kissed a girl as
long as you love me like
crazy remember when it came out said
this is Max Mar I I'm so happy there's
Clips I now because for years and years
he wouldn't really speak publicly about
anything I think this might be from The
Polar music interview he did and the
reason I went to Stockholm this weekend
was just like I've never had the
opportunity to see him live before and
it was so I kind of got goop bumps just
hearing him speak to you onest he's such
a he's such a legend I remember when it
came out I was watching the news clips
from from the states the news reporter
was out in the streets like oh would you
let you you know kids listen to this
thing you know kissing girls a girl
kissing a and I was like oh my God this
is going to be huge this is amazing for
me coming from here that's like yeah you
know it doesn't matter but it turned
into this whole thing and churches and
you know they they they went bananas it
was it was brilliant br it loved it yeah
it makes so much sense whenever people
go crazy around your song for whatever
reason it's going to be a hit cuz then
people are going to listen to it like
you know see if oh is it really that bad
or they listen to kind of you know go
against the people are angry about it or
just becomes part of the conversation
you know Max also said this weekend he
makes a lot more non bangers than
bangers but all of us will never get to
hear the non- bangers cuz you know
either they get stopped before they ever
get released or they're just not popular
enough for us to hear them Max Mar's
momentum kept going from
[Music]
there so this is number one huh this is
sick guess I'm having more fun and
now I'm going to show you
tonight oh
wow stck in
[Music]
Anthem
without you
[Music]
I didn't know he wrote
this kind of doesn't sound too much like
[Music]
him Max Martin's secret to write a hit
song number one the first few seconds
matter okay I wasn't aware of this let's
see what he says you and then pop talked
about this that the song should be you
should be able to recognize after one or
two seconds right we had this uh
philosophy of cuz he came from the DJ
world and to keep people on the floor
when you change the song it couldn't be
like you know what's this it had to be
something he liked playing songs where
they knew exactly what it was just from
the very start you know so that came
from that so it needed to be some kind
of ID yeah thing in the beginning so
people on the down Flor doesn't have to
hesitate I know this song exactly so
they stay that was the whole thing yeah
that's so interesting it might be a
little bit less like that now cuz I also
feel like people cut into the songs more
when the DJ like the whole DJ thing has
become a lot more like involved but I
mean certainly at that time as well and
even now I mean DJing is huge so maybe
it hasn't changed okay number one number
seven love
this I feel this album really got me
into pop
music just so
[Music]
fun you make me feel like I'm living
especially this song this song is so
amazing this would work in any
arrangement I just think it's so
good Timeless
[Music]
[Applause]
Timeless
[Applause]
great the funniest part about our
relationship is neither one of us wanted
to work together originally so I brought
three bottles of wine and we started on
the first and we were not going to write
a song until we got through the first
bottle and in that time it kind of took
the pressure off Max is so musical you
know he's known for pop music right
singles he's the single guy but his
knowledge of music is so vast he's such
a closet Punker he amazes me and I
really got a chance to get to know him
and you just fall in love with him
really
easily feel
and
IAC a
[Music]
vacation so many number ones it's so
crazy so many of them are so recently
too like last 15
[Music]
years you
touch it's super
[Applause]
such a good
production also iconic oh yeah Rea black
is in
this
[Applause]
yeah these songs are just so playable I
love this era of pop music like early
2010s by the way welcome back to another
video my name's Joel from roomy official
and these are our patrons that help this
channel stay alive because everything
gets CL when you show this much pop
music and we make videos on music here
so if you like that check it out
consider getting on patreon to see
exclusive footage and earlier videos
stuff like that anyway I appreciate you
let's continue look at the best s it's
just my favorite songwriter man it's
it's so cool so
cool of
[Music]
me this is the part of me that you never
going to ever take away for
me cross my
heart this is such an iconic retion too
only let me ask you in the comments are
you guys hearing anything specific about
the melodies or anything that makes you
think this must be Max Martin when you
hear them I wish I could perfectly
identify it but I do think that nowadays
he's so influential that so many people
just love him as much as I do to the
point especially songwriters to the
point where there's more stuff that
sounds like Max Mor now than ever uh but
still especially at this time I think
just his type of Melodies and just how
clean and minimalistic and clever it is
nothing could come
close not to say that it's necessarily
the only way to write music because it
isn't but he's the best at his thing you
know he's the most obsessed with music
and that's it like there's no other
thing that's in the room with you like
there are no politics and there's no
money and there's no anything other than
like he just loves to make music he's
just one of my favorite people I've ever
worked with in my life okay so max
talked about this this weekend as well
and I thought it was super fascinating
he's so honest he's very Swedish in that
way I also get the entire feeling that
like there's no politics and you know
he's just trying to make the best song
possible and he also said that it hasn't
been great for the people in his life a
lot of the time and I love that sort of
honesty like he said he's been a bad
brother he said he's been a B friend
like throughout his career he's really
always put the music first and while
that might not be the healthiest thing
or maybe the best thing if you can avoid
it it really speaks to just how
persistent and how hyperfocused he is at
this music thing it's probably not the
only way to be astronomically successful
but if you look at the people who are
like crazy crazy successful in their
fields you probably find a lot of people
like that that kind of are willing to
sacrifice anything and everything to
make it work
getting back together you to your to my
to
[Music]
me can you tell us about the first
meeting where her this young great
songwriter we had our first day with her
and maroon fire was recording next door
like the next Studio next door and this
guy shows up a friend of theirs and uh
we have literally haven't started the
session yet he comes up hey I heard s
yeah yeah I got to say hello I was like
H really oh no to I totally know her
it's fine he walks in turns out he
didn't know
her um so that was really weird and I
was sweating he started talking about
you know some ex boyfriend that it was
really messy and he leaves and I
apologize like oh I'm so sorry and she
was super cool and no problem at all and
and then I asked like so what was it
about well and she told me the story
about this guy she was dating and and
she said well one thing's for sure we're
never ever getting back together and I
was like that's that's pretty harsh to
say that and we're laughing about that
sounds like a song TI yeah you know and
I was so mad at this guy and that turned
into eternal
love for the guy who came in and like
ruined our session I was like thank you
so I love that
guy ah he's so amazing I want to hang
out with that man oh my God uh here we
got Kitty Perry's Roar Just you know
it's Banger after Banger let's be
[Music]
real Lon cuz I am the champion and
you're going to hear me
[Music]
R are you ready for ready
for a perfect perfect
[Music]
There's No Going
Back It Feels crazy to watch these one
after another you know what I mean it's
the same person is behind all of them
and you see all these different faces
obviously these different pop stars who
are amazing in their own right but you
also know that like he's involved with
all of them it's something else it's
something else entirely it's so crazy
one thing I did get to feel for as well
this weekend at the seminar he was
holding was that he is a little bit of
you know an engineer or you know kind of
a Craftsman in that way he kept talking
about the craft and I think that's how I
look at his writing too it's like he's
not necessarily the guy's going to
dictate what the songs are going to be
about it seems like it's more like you
know artists come in with their Vision a
lot of the time like what they want to
say or what they want to do and he's
kind of like the person who makes it
really palatable and easy for everyone
to listen to and he he said something
that was a little bit funny at one point
I always feel bad saying this cuz it
felt like it just kind of slipped out
but he said that like even you know the
dumbest people should be able to
appreciate it so like I think he's
always like really focused on like yes
like it should be stimulating for the
people who you know are expecting a lot
musically but it should also be so easy
and so simple to take in that like I'm
making this up like a drunk person that
is maybe not the smartest at the pub at
2: a.m. is also going to have to like
you know really be able to take it in
love it it's just so awesome to think
that that's like his job like nothing
more nothing less like of course he will
be more involved in lyric writing uh in
some things but it does feel like he's
just really good at crafting and kind of
like molding whatever you know the
artistic vision is that can sometimes be
kind of hard to Market you know
depending on what it is about and just
making it something that's just so
enjoyable Bre Bre break and the on a
fake b b bre B baby I'm just going to
shake shake shake shake
[Music]
shake okay here we have Max Martin's
secrets to write to hit song number two
the sound of the melody even today when
we write and you sing a Melody we we
have this like fake English that and the
C you know it's like means nothing but
you kind of know what it you want it to
sound like lyrically which and this is
the worst thing if someone comes in and
wants to write lyrics to that and we're
like no no could you come up with
something amazing poetic that sounds SS
like it's really hard you know because I
love that sound the melody is more
important than the sort of well I yeah I
believe that the sound of a Melody is
crucial I think a great Melody can be
ruined by a bad sounding lyric that
makes so much sense and I know a lot of
writers who write that way uh I do think
there is a little bit of like a a
movement with a lot of Indie artists
nowadays where they might be a little
bit more lyric Centric I love both of it
what sometimes can happen when you like
that and you're like oh I want this
vowel here so like you will have to work
around it so much that when you read the
lyrics if you just read the lyrics You
probably seen this on pop music
sometimes like it might sound okay or
like it sounds like even great in the
song and then you read it and you're
like this doesn't mean anything or like
it's really weird however they have this
amazing like high note that is like you
know on the a or o or whatever which
sounds really nice and full up in the
registry or but it's just funny to me
that so often you know the lyric can
really suffer but again I do think in
pop music in particular maybe not in mus
music overall but in pop music in
particular lyrics matter less it it's
secondary to the sound
[Music]
of it'll leave you
bre or with a nasty scar got a
Longs they'll
[Music]
tell I'll and then you have someone like
T Swift who just is an amazing lyric
writer and I think that's why he has so
many you know number ones with her it
seems like they complete each other cuz
I think she's such a great Storyteller
and lyric writer that she can probably
roll with the punches of Max being like
do something that sounds
[Music]
like
de now
we forgot Kendrick's on that
this is so also maybe this wasn't like
career building but it was like
definitely when I felt like oh my God
this is so Poppy and like kind of
mainstream and amazing he sounds so much
like Michael Jackson on that Max also
says that he's never sure his taste is
the best in the room he never pulls rank
or says like well I have this many
number ones or whatever he just presents
things like from my perspective it's
like this and sometimes he compromises
entirely when he trusts the people in
the room and like respects them and
think they're really good he's not going
to micromanage Ilia doing a sick hip-hop
beat for example cuz that's one of his
you know things that he's really good at
and Max isn't Max Martin has stated that
the reason he has remained so private
throughout his career as we discussed
earlier is because Fame scares him I've
always been scared of Fame I've seen it
up close and I don't think it's healthy
I mean he will see the absolute top of
Fame though I I can imagine that's going
to be really really hard to see just
like pop stars at the top like Justin
Bieber or Taylor Swift or whatever and
just everything that comes with that
it's GNA be rough I think a lot of
YouTubers and stuff actually have it
pretty good cuz obviously they get some
amount of Fame and you know get
recognized and a lot of the acement of
being a little bit famous but on that
level it just seems really unsustainable
and hard maxm has hit that idea that a
lot of people really love which is you
know uh rich and Anonymous a lot of
people really want that and I think
that's you know fair enough in 2016 Max
Martin won the prestigious polar music
prize before this there was only a
handful of pictures of him online and
the only interviews were 15 plus years
old in Swedish yeah I remember that all
the Nerds that really loved Max Martin
would like ask Swedish people to
translate them and all this stuff
there's saw these nerdy Threads Online
of people trying to figure out like you
know all of his methods and what gear
he's using like I even know what gear he
used in the '90s and now I believe cuz
I'm one of those
nerds ah the King that's a Swedish King
to the left he's got to give him
it that's so
weird I'm sweating um you did
it you blew my
cover I managed to hide between two
speakers in a basement for over 20
years and then you did this thanks a lot
this weekend Max said Focus comes from
not being distracted with phones Etc uh
he said he would be really bored in the
tube in the subway and his brain would
come up with Melodies and if he would
have had everything and kind of you know
really been on Tik Tok whatever all the
time uh he would not have gotten those
Melodies and maybe he wouldn't be where
he is today you
know okay number
22 I love this
song so just dance dance dance
gu so just dance dance dance
[Music]
again it's just like the biggest song of
all time or has anything overtaken
[Music]
it I think this is the most played on
Spotify right we made a video on that
it's here somewhere if it's not number
one it's number
two by several metrics blinding lights
is the most successful pop song in
history okay here we go longest charting
song ever on Billboard Hawk 100 19 weeks
for those of you who know math that's
almost 2 years pretty close most played
song on Spotify first to surpass 4
billion streams for a long time you was
shape of you that was number one by Ed
Sheran named number one song of all time
by billboard in
2021 Easy
[Music]
Choice is this just also number one
crazy savior tears only reached number
four when it was released in 2020 okay
yeah that I didn't remember that being
being number one but in 2021 a remix
version with Ariana Grande was released
which propelled it to number one okay
that makes
[Music]
sense for another
[Applause]
day never
ending oh
yeah that was a crazy collab
just cool music
video max Martin's secret to write the
hit song number three keep it simple the
trick is to write something simple that
that's still interesting it's hard to do
that and and also at the same time be
unique and and uh and all of that
because there are only so many notes you
know extremely detailed when it comes to
vocals his Melodies are so incredible
and so sophisticated but simple I think
what he is good at is is holding me back
actually because I tend to over sing
what he's great at is stop take a deep
breath simplify I think that Max's
secret is probably something along the
lines of the simplest most effective
thing is always the best I learned so
much from working with him for that
reason cuz I would always get really
complicated and he's he kind of strips a
lot of that away and I think that's one
of the coolest things about about what
he
does hey that's this
year this one more this year
[Music]
what oh
[Music]
yes crazy
I was surprised problem wasn't number
one I was wondering why we didn't
see Ariana
[Music]
before okay guys I hope you enjoyed that
and click here for another similar video
and I will see you very soon thanks for
watching this kind of different video I
love Max Martin love talking about him
could do it all day uh leave a comment
if you you know have anything else to
add or any anything that I can answer
even though you know I'm not Max Martin
not even close but yeah I'll uh I'll
talk to you later bye
