Q & A
What is a 'cannon rush' in StarCraft 2?
-A 'cannon rush' refers to a strategy used by Protoss players where they quickly build Photon Cannons in aggressive positions on the map, typically near the opponent's base, to apply early pressure and potentially secure a quick victory.
Who is Dark in the context of this StarCraft 2 match?
-Dark is a professional StarCraft 2 player known for his high skill level, particularly in playing the Zerg race. He is considered one of the top players in the world.
Why is Rebellion's decision to start with a Nexus before a Forge considered 'cheeky' or risky?
-Starting with a Nexus before a Forge is considered 'cheeky' or risky because it prioritizes economic development over early defense, making the player vulnerable to early attacks but potentially rewarding if they can survive without being pressured.
What does 'MMR' stand for and what does it indicate in StarCraft 2?
-MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating, a numerical score used in StarCraft 2 to represent a player's skill level relative to others. Higher MMR indicates a more skilled player.
How does the 'cheese' strategy generally influence a match in StarCraft 2?
-A 'cheese' strategy in StarCraft 2 involves unexpected and unconventional tactics that aim to catch the opponent off guard, often leading to a quick win. However, if anticipated or countered effectively, it can leave the cheesing player at a disadvantage.
What is the significance of Dark's transition to Roach Warren in response to the cannon rush?
-Dark's transition to Roach Warren in response to the cannon rush is a defensive maneuver to produce Roaches, which are effective against buildings like Photon Cannons due to their durability and higher damage output, allowing him to better handle the aggression.
Explain the strategic error in Rebellion’s follow-up to the cannon rush.
-Rebellion's error in the follow-up to the cannon rush lies in his choice of building triple Gateways without a timely Cybernetics Core or other tech paths like Stargate or Twilight Council. This limited his strategic options and delayed his tech progression, making his follow-up attack weaker than it could have been.
Why is it challenging for players to face top-tier professionals like Dark?
-Facing top-tier professionals like Dark is challenging due to their deep understanding of the game, ability to make quick strategic decisions, and skill in executing complex maneuvers and tactics that can adapt rapidly to any play style or strategy presented by their opponent.
What role do nerves play in professional StarCraft 2 matches?
-Nerves can significantly impact performance in professional StarCraft 2 matches. Players who manage their nerves well tend to perform better, especially under pressure, as they maintain clear thinking and precise control. Conversely, nervous players may make more mistakes or misjudge situations.
How did Dark’s handling of Rebellion’s aggressive play demonstrate his skill level?
-Dark’s handling of Rebellion’s aggressive play demonstrated his skill level through his calm response to pressure, strategic adaptation to unexpected tactics like the cannon rush, and efficient counter-strategies that enabled him to regain control and eventually win the match.

hello everyone my name is Loco and
welcome to another highle mat of
Starcraft 2 what I've got for you today
is a best of three series that was
recently played during the Korean
Starcraft League now this is an
interesting match it's been recommended
to me by many of you cuz I've heard that
apparently there's a cheeky little
Cannon rush now I would imagine it's not
going to be our zerk right here in the
Border ring Corner who's going to be
Canon rushing playing with the drones we
have none UT than dark you know him you
love him he's one of the world's very
best players his opponent however in the
opposite corner with the blue protal
species apparently a bit of a cheesy man
I'm not too familiar with his games but
I guess we'll find out together what
he's currently cooking up we're looking
at none other than rebellion's main
Nexus Now Rebellion is about 1,500 MMR
below dark he's still a grandm league
player he's a Korean protos player
but not quite of dark caliber generally
speaking and right from the get-go here
in game number one apparently we're
starting off with a Nexus first after
the pylon and a pretty late Scout as
well that is already very
cheeky oh okay so we're going to go H
we're going to go for a forge first
after the Nexus normally you'd be going
for a Gateway this is an incredibly
greedy start right here from rebellion
and apparently he is not afraid to bring
the heat right here to one of the
world's greatest zerks so let's see it's
hatch gas pool from dark it looks like
are we just going to Cannon Rush him
straight up is that the plan I thought
we were going to do some Shenanigans
over here and maybe try and wall them in
but dark forced to pull a bunch of the
boys yep he's going to complete the wall
up I haven't seen this build at the pro
level in quite a
while now especially against somebody
like dark though it's funny to me cuz
dark is usually the man who Embraces
chos he loves being a very cheesy man if
needs to be right and he he doesn't
really he doesn't usually really feel
the need to play too macro focused if he
feels like he can get away with it right
if he feels like he can probably win the
game by playing Super aggressively
that's usually what dark will do so to
Canon Rush dark you have to be yeah you
have to be brave you have to be
ambitious and here we go double Photon
Cannon going up and not a whole lot that
our Zerg player can do about it dark has
already decided to go for the roach war
in this case I kind of wonder if
Rebellion should steal the gas geyser as
well if he wants to be super obnoxious
cuz usually this will be Mass ravager
I've got a feeling that this base is
going to go down regardless I don't
think there's a whole lot of dark can do
about it with two Photon cannons
shooting away at it Rebellion is looking
like he's in a mighty fine position and
remember this was also a Nexus first on
the pek ofit so he's got a stellar
economy right here against
dark yeah I think dark's best chance
right now is to go all in Brenda
apparently is going to start off the
long correct to watch the other side of
the map I think that's the only way she
can really go there's no way you're
going to save this hatch roaches are
going to spawn in just a moment okay
that gas geyser was
taken problem is you can't even really
expend very easily right so you can okay
maybe you can outrange the pylon and
then kill this pylon over here too Ro
chance of falling that's a
disaster alternatively I guess she can
just sort of kill the pylons and
eventually re-expand but that's going to
be so EX exceptionally slow the only
thing I guess that's not really going
that well here for Rebellion is the fact
that his cyber core naturally is going
to be very late with this opener so for
example a void Ray followup which is
very common after a Canon Rush is going
to be super delayed too but I'm assuming
it's still going to be plenty in time
eventually though all of this will get
shut down and I guess dark may just
reconsider pushing across the map did
the Queen by the way ever leave
yeah back before the brute War we could
fly sure Brenda sure Brenda's actually
going to go back home again yeah she's
got her cane she is ready to go for it's
important to keep your old limbs moving
every once in a while
okay Brenda is done oh look at that very
respectful these two ravagers went out
of the way of the old lady marching back
home these guys not so much got the
younger generation am I right very
disrespectful um dark isn't a world of
trouble he's re-expanding he's trying to
drone I guess he's going to go for a
third base he's got high ground Vision
over here so at least he will be able to
go for I don't know a couple bows in
that direction interestingly Enough by
the way this is not a Stargate followup
or a Twilight Council followup or a robo
facility followup it's just triple
gate I feel like that's probably the
worst responsive I'm being honest with
you trying to think what the advantage
is like imagine if this was a one base
all in from dark a void Ray shuts it
down basically perfectly so a Stargate
followup at that point is really good
triple gate basically just puts you now
in this weird position where you almost
have to go for a bit of an Allin but
since your cyber core is late warpgate
is going to be late too so it's just
going to be a more difficult way to
acquire third Nexus I I think that what
this uh that's what this basically comes
down to so from what I found out
Rebellion is currently sitting at right
around 5.15 .2 5.3k
MMR which in case you're unfamiliar is
like the lower end of grandm league on
the Korean server so still very good the
thing is within Grandmaster League
there's a massive range so the lowest
tier grandm Masters are maybe right
around 5K MMR but the upper echelons of
Grand Master League are going over 7K So
within those 200 ranks you have such a
skill difference that just looking at
the league border alone really isn't
enough like to put it in perspective my
oldtime Peak MMR and this is a while ago
go mind you my alltime Peak MMR is 5.5k
now I didn't hold that for very long but
I was very happy when I finally had the
two fives in front of my but like I was
miles away from winning games against
Pro Gamers you know like I would have to
get very cheesy if I wanted to win a
game against a professional gamer you
know what even though Rebellion is
finding himself in a really Stellar
position or at least he found himself in
a really Stellar Precision a couple
minutes ago I don't like his followup at
all look at how much he calling me dark
is actually managed to muster up the man
was basically dead in the water he is
not protected against oracles he's not
protected against dark Templar this is
dark basically shaving 17 Corners off of
his build order just to try and squeeze
out as much as he possibly can so
because of that greed he's actually fine
against the blink stalker followup I
think the straight blink stalker is a
pretty weak play this is still obviously
a good position here for Rebellion don't
don't don't yo Mr Zealot go go over
there
anyways this is still a good position
for him don't get me wrong but I don't
love this position for the protal nearly
as much as I did just a few minutes ago
we have an observer sitting here with
the main Army too very suboptimal cuz
even though he could have had Vision
battery overcharge I think Rebellion is
super nervous that battery overcharges
really early too zala does go back and
hold position there in the Walla blink
is not done yet oh my God dark yeah
dark's a
monster dark's the monster under your
bed B when you're you know laying there
in the dark coincidence I think
not yeah top tier Pro gamers are really
scary they know exactly what Corners
they can cut and they're more than
willing to make a gamble whenever the
game requires
it we had pretty much full two base
saturation for protos when dark was on
full one base saturation didn't we the
counter attack didn't really do a whole
lot Tech Wise by the way this is still
pretty atrocious of course for dark but
he's certainly making himself look
really really scary luckily here for
Rebellion he did save most of those
probes and he also did save the
Nexus I we we have a robo facility but
all he's made out of it there we go is
an
observer you can't really attack without
a prism right so you kind of have to
make a warp prism here and then go
across the
map and maybe deal damage I don't know
dude the creeps thread is already
looking pretty solid again yeah so cute
early game from Rebellion but no real
scheduled
followup so we're just sort of blinking
around a bunch of stalkers but this is
not really inspiring yeah me in general
so he's looking around he knows the
Greet at this point he has seen the
amount of stuff I love by the way this
followup here as well from dark going
into the quick
infestors so infestors when you fungal
growth the opposing players's Army
obviously it's going to be somewhat heal
in place right it's going to be slowed
down lot and your ravagers at that point
can bow them down really easily plus it
inhibits any sort of movement abilities
so if you in this case if you fungle the
stalkers they will not be able to use
their blink
ability cute player by dark we'll have
to see if it pays off as dark now
actually grabs the supply lead that's an
interesting
one to be fair though it is
nerve-wrecking playing against players
like this oh that's a big fungle to
start things off
this is a nice little game this is still
a great position by the way for
Rebellion but this is a nice little game
to show
you what the top tier players in the
world are capable of okay another good
fungle ah there's no way dark can hold
this right this is a plus two stalker
Army 13 Roaches on the Beck of this
though Rebellion does need to get a move
on no target firing on the infestors
here whatsoever no juggling with the
prison
either we're going to warp in a bunch of
this is turning into a very alliny
situation here for Rebellion who's now
actually economically slightly behind if
you can get the kill on the ne or on the
Hatchery rer then I guess he should be
okay although there is already a new no
he is actually not okay there's already
a fourth Hatchery also done here for
dark dark did a bit of a magic trick you
blink twice and he's got three b e how
did he do it
well honestly though if Rebellion did
any other followup than the one that he
went for I would say that like most Kon
Rush is okay GG is cool most Canon
rushers will follow up their Canon Rush
with either void race or dark Templar
and dark was not prepared against either
of those
two game number two we find ourselves on
the map
Elion much more standard opener here
from a rebellion this time around it's
gone for the Gateway on the low ground
into a gas guys are in the main base and
we should see a Nexus at about 20 Supply
together with a syore also at 20
Supply strange looking scoreboard though
I'm not going to
lie I wonder if dark actually really
needed to leave so sure if it would have
been hero or maxex right yeah I don't
really think there's a way out of that
situation for dark but dark was like one
or two fungal growths away from actually
stabilizing there and his economy wasn't
really as bad as he thought it was
I'm fairly sure dark in that previous
match assumed that his opponent was
further ahead than he actually was cuz
Rebellion clearly nervous clearly making
a bunch of mistakes there and well he
got a point on the board but I'm still
not loving his position in this
particular series despite the fact that
he's one step closer to taking down one
of the oldtime
greats one theme as well that I've
noticed over the years when it comes to
top tier
programers all of them have it like the
marus of this world the SOS of this
world the darks the rainor very rarely
will they actually get nervous so I'm
sure they do but they don't outwardly
show it and they don't really show it in
their games either as a matter of fact
I've noticed especially guys like Sarah
and this may just be the one
differentiating factor for Sarah sarell
seems to power up whenever he's under
pressure If Saro is behind in a series
it's kind of like he's going Super
Saiyan you know whereas a lot of people
will be doubting their own ability they
like oh my God this guy is way better
than me right you get that negative
selft talk the top tier Pros don't
really have that so despite the fact
that dark right now is well behind in
the series I don't think he's too
concerned I'm fairly sure he's just
going to be comfortably playing this and
he'll be more than happy to just do
whatever it
takes although this does make going for
an Allin a little bit riskier right say
dark wants to go for a roach ravager
rush or something like that well he
could be in some
trouble zering Scouts the Stargate
opener here this is very normal
everything here is very normal for
Rebellion it's one way to make a name
for yourself
though Canon rushing uh yeah dark is
certainly a way to uh get a little bit
of interest from the
internet all righty so what's the plan
dark what are we going to do
just defend make a bunch of Queens
spread the creep back towards the
natural expansion cuz the natural did
get blocked
earlier okay zerlings going across
trying to see if they can potentially
get the snipe on that third Nexus
there's a pylon missing here Rebellion
we need a
pylon eh I guess it's okay usually go
for a pylon to tug yeah exactly the
Adept in
between so that way the surface area
against a zerling push is delayed quite
a or it's reduced quite a
bit roor coming up double sport crawler
as well dark actually only at 32 drones
at this point which is not quite ideal
maybe also just playing this a little
bit safer than he ultimately needs
to two additional gases lar should start
up any moment
now H within about the next 30 seconds
although he does have actually a roach
for and finish up as well as a bunch of
overlords so this could actually be him
preparing to make a yeah that's what
we're doing I think I think we're yep
we're preparing for a big swell of
roaches he's spreading creep forward in
the direction of his opponent's Third
Base we're already up to six Queens I
believe that this should be especially
if it can kill one of the
oracles a bit of a queen March yep the
ladies are assembling for battle once
again an uncommon strategy in
2024 we don't really see it all too
often anymore but it's very powerful
when well it goes the way that Zerg has
prepared on this map The Rush distance
is relatively short especially when
you're forced to take the third base
first Oracles in the meantime using some
of their energy to kill the drones all
of that is great but Rebellion needs to
hold on he's going for GLA to depths on
the back of this he's got a lot of
Chrono Boost energy safed up really
should be using that oh my God super
early battery trigger again way too
early way way way too early now he's
going to not have it available for the
actual fight finally we see a Corona
boost right there on the Twilight
Council but I think we should have seen
that one already lovely corrosive BS yep
that Pyon positioning sub optimal dark
immediately makes use of that one of the
oracles pretty much out of energy before
this fight even properly begins not
terrible so far though for Rebellion
he's trying to make the best of this
situation man imagine if he had battery
overcharge and glaes adep done I mean
now he's got glaes finished he may
actually be able to hold
I don't I feel like with battery
overcharge there's a chance to hold but
the cool down is quite
long and I think the Nerfs kind of
kicked in a little bit maybe we could
make an extra Oracle or like take the
gases in the natural expansion so we can
actually produce units cuz we're going
all the way up to a th000 minerals
now I love by the way the dark look
looks at this series right now he's like
you know what I
need I need to do some cheesing of my
own to be fair though that previous game
was a pretty clear example cuz rebellion
was very Trigger Happy on the battery
overchart in that game too and I think
dark looked at that he's like you know
what if I did something a little
aggressive you would be in a lot of
trouble and it turns out he's right and
that will take us to the map ocean born
final game in this best of three
series certainly another map where you
can go for a queen March if you feel
like that is the right call
especially if you get the creep going
right say the third base gets taken here
as the very first expansion you get the
creep going and suddenly you appear on
your opponent side of the map nice easy
Highway for those Queens it's one of
those builds that's relatively unpopular
in the current meta of the game but it's
not something that will ever truly
disappear right ever since the queen got
nerfed so the Queens used to be able to
transfuse off creep ever since that was
removed out of the
game well
it's been a bit of a uh it's it's been
one of those builds that's fallen off
quite a bit imagine though if they still
could it would be quite
ridiculous okay so this is cheeky dark
faking the natural to the third base
location so he knows that there's a
probe blocking him at this point
Rebellion is going to check for the
third base another drone came down from
The High Ground and takes the natural
expansion one oh in favor right here of
dark he should take into account that
that drone is somewhere so he should
send sent yeah he sends the probe early
that's the right call here from
Rebellion cuz you do not want your
natural expansion
blocked ooh okay well that works yep you
need to make sure you chase
this cuz despite the fact that this is
not in the location that dark would have
liked it to be it's still going to block
the Nexus Zealot can we go Zealot and
cyber cor hello Zealot cyber thank you s
okay no
Zealot all right we're going to use six
probes instead which does work the only
problem is that there's always going to
be a little bit of a residue of creep
the delay on the Cy cor is actually
quite noteworthy though cuz that was
like what 10 seconds late okay at least
it felt like 10 seconds maybe it was
like 5 Seconds that's what she said no
come on inappropriate anyways the delay
on the cybercore kind of sucks because
now everything is going to be delayed
too we do have double gas finally going
up in the main
base yep dark just continues being
annoying luckily for him the evolution
chamber for Rebellion that is yeah the
evolution chamber is a 3X3 structure
unlike the Hatcher which is 5x5 so the
NEX is apparently could just barely be
squeezed right next to that well Zer
building in the meantime though dark Moi
just trying to be annoying this is one
of those skill checks we don't see a ton
of proxy hatches in the current meta of
Starcraft 2 either but it's one of those
things where like if you go up against a
protos player and you're feeling really
confident you may as well CU protos in
general super build order dependent
and well everything that Rebellion had
planned for this game it's been thrown
out of the window now not really a whole
lot you can do other than play well
pretty normal so in a strange way going
for a proxy hatch kind of forces out a
relatively normal
game apparently the stalker by the way
just barely did not get the kill on the
uh the
overlord eventually the Twilight council
is going to finish
I wouldn't mind seeing even like a dark
Templar rush like if we're going to play
Cheeky games I think dark Templar
rushing dark would be really good
although then again at that point I
really dislike the cybernetics score
delay it's going to be charge okay
charge is an interesting one too cuz
then we Min too much
gas we should probably also 16 out of 16
the main base first there's this mineral
field right over here on the left that
does not quite have optimal saturation
it's these little things though that
really do add up quite a bit I'm
assuming we're going to go into a
Templar archives as well in a moment to
go for like an archon zelot push very
[Music]
powerful cuz otherwise the gas count
that Rebellion currently has doesn't
really make a lot of sense I think
actually going like eight gate with 32
probes is a pretty decent followup too
so eight gate 32 probes just Mass Zealot
towards the other side of the map really
strong but in that case if you he wants
to go for something like that he should
have pulled out of gas already so
considering he did not pull out of gas
considering he's already at 35 probes um
we will we will not be seeing anything
along those
lines at this point dark knows it's not
a Stargate opener cuz he would have
already seen a Stargate
unit although I wouldn't have minded
seeing Rebellion save up a bunch of
flying units too you know to like lull
the Zer into a false sense of security
cuz in my mind you almost have to like
trick the opponent a little bit I think
that was within Vision yeah
so dark actually just saw the the
Twilight Council straight up now the
dark Shrine goes down but we've had so
much gas for that for such a long
while these are now going to be very
late so we've got four no we've got
three gateways no four gateways I was
going to say three gateways would make
no no sense at all we've got three
gateways to warp in a bunch of zealots
and then to follow up the zealots with a
bunch of dark Templar but not a dark
Templar are going to be very late
[Music]
okay in the meantime on the other side
of the map it's going to be roaches
zerlings and
ravagers spine crawler is going to
finish up in just a moment and I do
really like that spine safety Spore
crawler as well 5 minutes and 10 seconds
usually is the latest you really need it
so Spore crawler is going to be a
detector against any cloaked
units yeah too much gas so Rebellion has
got way too much gas here for this build
he could have already warped in so I
think he wants to go for a Warp warp in
inside of the main base there's an
Overlord hanging out here cuz of course
there's an Overlord hanging
[Music]
out it's too slow man it's too slow yeah
so it's funny because if you look at the
APM players are still going to be fast
it's funny too because if I were to cast
some of my own games right I feel like I
would be very critical of my own games
too but I feel like when I playing my
own games that I'm so Swift and fast and
everything is moving along so quickly
Council on the NEX is over at the third
base location though these these DTS
have to basically kill the base that
sport crawler is not quite within range
oh he's going to get it nicely done by
Rebellion yep we're going to see a
recoil on the dark Templar too okay
three of them ended up going down but
that is certainly a worthwhile
trade dark only at 40 something workers
by the way I never actually remade the
Nexus okay that now makes this a little
bit awkward
we also are late with the forge I feel
like if we had that much gas we could
have made the forge a little sooner
anyways ultimately this is going to be
the moment where dark is going to strike
he should bring an overseer with this
Army I'm assuming he's got one there it
is Council on the Nexus shoot once again
be forc there is one Immortal
out okay Rebellion by the way only on
four gateways right so we need to get
the warp in done I don't think he should
back up to behind the wall should he ah
back up to behind the wall is a little
dangerous can we see some uh some
additional Immortal production I think
that's not a bad plan keep in mind with
the Cyber cor down he can only warp in
zealots but I don't think Rebellion
really
Minds second
Immortal with some good force fields is
is certainly
possible in the meantime by the way that
Hatchery has been retaken and on top of
that dark has also taken a fourth base
at the 12:00 position
okay thir Nexus needs to really get
going fast
man hello what are you ah it was a
different prob apparently task with with
building the Nexus I see Hydra coming up
I mean honestly pretty Dam good play
though by Rebellion
it's just that you
know playing against Pro Gamers is
tough but he's not playing this poorly
by any
stretch you wouldn't look at this game
and think yeah no he's he's like more
than a thousand MMR below his opponent
right I mean dark obviously playing this
relatively calmly now going into the
lurker Den we may very well see a hive
as well in just a
moment although honestly I think dark
can just go for another big push if he
can deny that third base one more
time Rebellion is going to be in a weird
spot where his main and even his natural
expansion are going to start running low
look mineral fields in the main are
already starting to run
out and the natural won't be too far
behind there's a couple of them that
will be running dry in a couple minutes
at which point the third n Third Base
becomes an absolute
necessity so dark actually does not have
a h but he does have a lurker in which
is a bit
funky he's not really saving up gas or
anything along those lines
but usually Larch lurker is considered
to be very mediocre although it's
technically something you can do if he's
expecting that this is going to be a two
Bas all in here or effectively a two Bas
all in from
Rebellion I wonder if lurkers are going
to be good against that well it doesn't
have a lot of gas so we probably won't
find out wouldn't be surprised if the
lurkers are more or less just a safety
safety precaution so here's the push
Supply wise 70 Supply behind but this is
a strong protal Army if we can get
another warpin or two I don't know about
stalkers I guess he's going blink okay
we have a few zealots in the meantime
and a natural expansion of the Zerg
being a nuisance but this is becoming
kind of do or die
here yeah this this angle is perfect for
the
Zerg he does slice off a few of the
roaches and ravagers which is kind of
nice
the numbers are just not really doing
him any
favors I don't agree with pushing from
this high ground I think he should go
through the center I think that usually
works out much better although he's
finding a bit of an angle it's just that
the Hydra hallucinated Colossus okay
yeah know those hydras are absolutely
tearing him apart their DPS is absurd
and since there's no splash damage in
this Army other than an hallucinated
Colossus they don't deal damage okay
prison go down I think with that the
chances of rebellion also disappear but
you know what he really did put up a
great fight in the end it's dark who
wins the series 2 to one
