Takeaways
- 💇♀️ Purple shampoo is designed to neutralize yellow tones in blonde hair, cooling down the overall color.
- 👱♀️ Purple shampoo works best on truly blonde hair; it doesn't effectively tone light brown or dark blonde hair.
- 🎨 The principle behind purple shampoo lies in color theory: purple and yellow are complementary colors, so they cancel each other out when applied.
- 🟣 High-quality purple shampoos are essential for noticeable results. The creator recommends brands like Pulp Riot Barcelona, Phola No Yellow, and Pana Purple Shampoo.
- 🧴 Don’t use purple shampoo immediately after a salon visit, especially if you’ve had your hair toned. Wait 6 to 8 weeks for optimal results.
- ⏳ Use purple shampoo sparingly—about every third wash—since overuse can make hair appear overly toned or even purple.
- 🧼 Prepping the hair with a clarifying shampoo (like Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two) helps remove buildup, allowing the purple shampoo to work more effectively.
- ⏱️ If your hair is particularly brassy, leave the purple shampoo in for 2 to 5 minutes before rinsing for more intense toning.
- 💆♀️ Follow purple shampoo use with a hydrating conditioner or treatment, such as Joico K-Pak Hydrator, to restore moisture and combat dryness.
- 📅 Purple shampoo should only be used when your hair is starting to look brassy, not with every wash, to maintain balance and prevent over-toning.
Q & A
What is purple shampoo, and how does it work?
-Purple shampoo is a shampoo that deposits a light amount of purple color onto the hair to neutralize yellow tones. It works by using the color theory, where purple cancels out yellow because they are complementary colors on the color wheel.
What type of hair is purple shampoo most effective for?
-Purple shampoo is most effective for blonde hair that has yellow tones. It won't work on light brown or dark blonde hair or on hair with red, orange, or dark gold tones.
Can purple shampoo dye your hair?
-No, purple shampoo doesn't dye your hair. It only deposits a tiny bit of purple color to tone down yellow tones, and the color eventually fades and washes out.
How often should you use purple shampoo?
-It's recommended to use purple shampoo once every other week or every third time you wash your hair. Overusing it can lead to your hair looking too toned, silver, or even slightly purple in some areas.
What should you do if your hair starts to look too toned or purple after using purple shampoo?
-If your hair starts looking too toned or purple, don't worry. The purple tones will wash out eventually as the shampoo isn't permanent.
Should you use purple shampoo on freshly toned hair?
-No, you should wait at least 6 to 8 weeks after a fresh toning treatment before using purple shampoo. Using it too soon can interfere with the toner in your hair.
What brands of purple shampoo does the speaker recommend?
-The speaker recommends the Pulp Riot Barcelona, Phola No Yellow, and Pana purple shampoos, which are dark, deep purple and work effectively.
Why is it recommended to use a clarifying shampoo before using purple shampoo?
-A clarifying shampoo helps remove buildup from your hair, making it clean and allowing the purple shampoo to be more effective at depositing its color.
What conditioning treatment does the speaker suggest using after purple shampoo?
-The speaker suggests using a hydrating conditioner or a conditioning treatment after using purple shampoo. They recommend the Joico K-Pak Hydrator Intense Treatment for extra moisture.
How long should you leave purple shampoo on your hair if it’s very brassy?
-If your hair is very brassy, you can leave purple shampoo on for 2 to 5 minutes before rinsing it out to achieve better toning results.

🧴 Understanding Purple Shampoo: How and Why to Use It
In this introductory segment, Sam, a licensed cosmetologist, welcomes viewers and introduces the topic of purple shampoo, a product often misunderstood. She explains that purple shampoo is designed to neutralize yellow tones in blonde hair by depositing a small amount of purple pigment, which counteracts yellow tones based on the color wheel. The shampoo works best on truly blonde hair and is ineffective on darker or reddish shades. Sam showcases a comparison between blonde hair swatches treated and untreated with purple shampoo to illustrate its effects. She emphasizes the importance of choosing high-quality purple shampoos, recommending brands like Pulp Riot Barcelona, Fanola No Yellow, and Pana. She also advises viewers to avoid using purple shampoo immediately after salon toning and recommends waiting 6-8 weeks before use. Overuse can lead to overly toned, silver, or even purple hair, so Sam suggests using it sparingly, about once every other week.
💧 Conditioning After Purple Shampoo: Tips for Healthy Blonde Hair
Sam discusses the importance of conditioning after using purple shampoo, particularly after clarifying the hair to remove any buildup. She recommends using a clarifying shampoo, such as Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two, before applying purple shampoo to ensure the hair is clean and can fully absorb the purple pigment. For hair that is significantly brassy, Sam suggests leaving the purple shampoo on for 2-5 minutes before rinsing it out. To counteract the drying effects of both clarifying and purple shampoos, she advises following up with a deep conditioning treatment. Sam recommends the Joico K-Pak Hydrator Intense Treatment for added moisture, particularly beneficial for blonde hair, which often needs extra hydration. She concludes with a quick reminder that choosing the right purple shampoo and ensuring that hair is light enough are key to achieving the desired results. The video wraps up with a call to action for viewers to like, subscribe, and stay tuned for more hair care tips.

Transcripts
hey guys welcome back to my Channel or
welcome if you're new if you don't
already know me my name is Sam I'm a
licensed cosmetologist and today we are
going to talk all about purple shampoo
because I feel like a lot of people
still aren't entirely sure how to use it
properly what it's meant for what the
limitations are Etc so I'm going to
break it all down for you show you some
before and afters and teach you what
purple shampoo is best for and how to
use it properly so that you can get the
best results possible so purple shampoo
is literally purple in color you can see
my bottle's a little messy here it just
deposits a tiny little bit of purple
color to the hair in order to cool the
tone down and neutralize any warm
yellowy tones it's not a Dye or anything
like that and it's not doing anything
permanent to your hair it's just
depositing an ever so light amount of
purple that will just eventually fade
and wash out of your hair now what
purple shampo shoo is meant for like I
said is to neutralize yellow tones so I
see people sometimes using purple
shampoo on their hair when it's like a
light brown dark blonde it's not really
going to work your hair needs to
actually be blonde in order for the
purple shampoo to work properly the way
it works is if you look at a color wheel
purple is on the opposite side from
yellow meaning they are complimentary
colors so when you combine purple and
yellow they cancel each other out or
neutralize each other so to show you an
example I have this Swatch of blonde
here a little bit more of like a true
Platinum kind of yellowy blonde color
and then these swatches here I washed
with purple shampoo I didn't even let it
sit I literally just lathered it and
rinsed it out and you can see the
difference between the two swatches the
hair that was washed with the purple
shampoo is a lot more Ashy and cool
toned so again if your hair has red
orange dark gold purple shampoo isn't
going to really do much your hair needs
to be blonde like truly blonde and have
yellow tones in it in order for the
purple to work now you want to make sure
that you're getting a good quality
purple shampoo there are out there that
are a lighter purple shade that I just
don't find deposit enough or do enough
to the hair my personal favorites are
the pulp Riot Barcelona I also really
love the phola no yellow and the Pana
purple shampoo there's other good ones
out there too but those are like my top
three that I usually recommend to
clients and I'll link all of those in
the description for you they're all very
similar they're a really deep purple
almost like blue violet color and they
work really really well so the way that
you want to use purple shampoo is number
one you don't want to use it on your
hair that's been freshly toned if you
just got back from the salon wait
because the purple can kind of mess with
the toner in your hair I would wait at
least like 6 to 8 weeks until your toner
has like completely washed out and faded
and once you start feeling like your
hair is starting to look not as fresh
and a little bit brassy then start using
it you also don't want to use it every
single time you wash your hair because
you will notice that your hair is going
to start looking a little bit too toned
it's going to get kind of silver and
maybe even a little bit purple in some
areas if that happens don't worry like I
said it will wash out so it's not a big
deal so I would say depending on how
often you wash your hair maybe once
every other week or like every every
third time maybe that you're washing
your hair I think would be good so what
I recommend doing when it's time for you
to use your purple shampoo use a
clarifying shampoo first I really like
the Paul Mitchell shampoo too that is
one of my favorites I feel like this
does a good job of getting the hair nice
and clean and removing any buildup
without stripping the hair or making it
feel super dry so do a clarifying
shampoo first that way you're really
getting the hair super squeaky clean and
then go in with your purple shampoo that
way there no buildup or anything
creating a barrier and your hair can
really suck up the purple shampoo as
much as possible now if you feel like
you really need it to be toned a good
amount like your hair is really brassy
you can leave it on for I would say like
2 to 5 minutes even and then rinse it
out and then I always like to follow it
up with a conditioning treatment or some
kind of like really good thick hydrating
conditioner because like I said the
purple shampoo can be a little bit
drying and after you did the clarifying
it's just the perfect opportunity to
then do a conditioning treatment plus if
your hair is blonde you probably could
use the extra moisture so that's a great
time if you're going to be doing your
purple shampoo do a conditioning
treatment as well personally I love the
joyco kpac hydrator intense treatment
this stuff is amazing and then like I
said just use it every like third time
or so that you wash your hair and that's
about it if you feel like purple shampoo
in the past hasn't worked for you like I
said make sure that you're using a good
brand and that it's a really nice dark
deep purple color and also make sure
that your hair is light enough for it
okay well I am running out of daylight
so that's going to be it for this video
nice and quick and simple I hope that
you guys found this helpful if you
learned something from this video please
give it a thumbs up that way other
people can find it and if you'd like to

hopefully I'll see you really soon in my
