Posture Tip (The Power Center) - For Any Dance
Summary

Transcripts
hello Leon here from passion for dancing
calm and today I want to give you
another very important posture tip I did
already one tip where I talked about a
mistake that a lot of dancers make we're
just bringing up their shoulders you
know in their frame or when they do arm
styling so I'm gonna link to that video
somewhere here on the video or in the
description below but in today's video
I'm gonna give you another tip that's so
important so many dancers miss so let's
get started what is it well you see in
part when you're thinking about your
ideal posture you want to stretch up
from the floor up through the head you
want to basically like feel like you're
taking you're at the top of your head
here and bring it up you want to tuck
your chin in stretch your spine and very
importantly what you want to do is you
want to bring your stomach in okay so
you want to basically pull in this area
here so usually refer to it as the
center so we're going to be bringing our
Center in or holding our Center pulling
in your Center many different ways the
teachers will will tell you to basically
bring pulling your stomach in and at the
same time but that does it it makes the
back a little bit longer and it flattens
out the low back arched a lot of us have
an excessive low back arch okay and our
stomachs protrude forward that's like a
very common posture it's it's often
referred to as the anterior pelvic tilt
posture okay which causes also back pain
okay but in the dancing world a lot of
people you know they started in this
position here in this posture this is
their relaxed fun you know on the couch
type of posture everything kind of hangs
out okay you know and I've got a I was
starting to get a little belly myself
now that I'm getting older so I gotta
watch out for that too but anyway that's
for another story well what you want to
do is you need to pull it in as soon as
you start dancing
your posture must change okay you cannot
you know you cannot dance and have good
balance and do you know spins and turns
and go too fast music and and and have
control with your partner if you're not
pulling in your Center okay or if you're
not preparing your body in the correct
way for your dancing okay so very
important that you know as you stretch
up and everything like that you also
pull in your stomach so hopefully you
can see that I'm gonna show you the
difference again so this is me kind of
relaxed my casual you know cool position
and I'm gonna pull in yeah so from here
I go to here right away I hope you can
see I become taller yes my stomach comes
in my ribcage slightly goes forward my
back flattens out a little bit more yes
so one more let me show you from this
angle maybe here from the so again this
is me kind of relaxed stomach out now
pull it in okay so start from here pull
it in okay so a lot of people when
they're dancing you know let me give you
an example let's say I'm doing the
International style rumba and I'm doing
the basic step right so I'll show you
from the side two and three and four one
two so if I have a bad posture we look
it would look like this - so this is
when I'm not pulling in okay you can see
everything is kind of hanging out yeah
this is terrible
okay now let me show you what it would
look like again I'm just doing the basic
step of the international style Rama but
this applies to any dance in Latin and
ballroom dances okay so so this is me
now pulling in hopefully you can see
that I'm now being very conscious to
pull in my Center and not let anything
out okay so this is super important four
and two and three and four two
three-oh c3 even here the cucarachas
very conscious to keep my center in and
thence my hips around my spine not this
yes would you see people letting
everything out this is the most
important area in your posture okay you
have to pull it in okay and feel like
something is going in yes you can't let
this section here you know kind of you
can't relax completely when you dance
you're just not gonna get the same
results and yes it takes time to learn
how to pull in your Center and be able
to breathe at the same time but yes you
are not gonna be breathing out full
belly breaths as you would if you
completely relaxed okay that's just the
fact of it okay so but for the dancing
that's what you need in order to get the
balance in order to be to have efficient
movement from step to step and hopefully
you can see that even in you know if I
do some rumba walks here you can see
right away me pulling in what a
difference that makes
and now so this is me doing it the right
way and I'm gonna not do it the right
way so this is me with my stomach out do
you see the coordination changing right
away I don't have a I don't have a power
center anymore
yeah hopefully you can see it from the
camera okay and I hope it makes sense so
whenever you are dancing again doesn't
matter what dance it is the faster the
dance the more pulled in the center so
if you're doing swing or jive that's
even more you have to pull everything in
yeah imagine doing jive kicks and
letting everything hang out it's just
not gonna work man yeah try it and if it
doesn't work for you I'd love to hear
how you're doing that but in all my
experience it doesn't work and the
faster the dance the harder it is even
in social dancing like salsa right even
in salsa a five six seven oh one two
three pull it in keep a nice very nice
frame yeah dance everything around it
Hey yeah always pulling in and keeping
the posture correct okay super important
again no matter what dance you're doing
okay and your partner will also feel the
difference believe it or not they'll
right away be able to feel if you're
connected to your Center or you're just
you know completely casual relaxed
without any power in this area okay so I
hope you enjoyed this video and if you'd
love to check out our other technique
lessons as well as all of our syllabus
in the American style international star
salsa and more visit our website and I
hope to hear from you leave a comment
below how is your posture did this video
resonate with you I'd love to hear from
you
