be sharing 20 life lessons I've learned
I recently twed 20 and um yeah I hope
this helps to remind myself actually
when I look back on this of the things
that I've learned and the things I want
to stay true to and I hope they help you
so let's get straight into it so the
first one is the kiss principle keep it
simple stupid through growing up trying
to become a professional rugby player
to studying to now living at University
doing mechanical engineering there's
been this one thing I always have to
remind myself of is keep it simple
stupid um the more simple something is
the more beautiful it can become I I'll
just explain to you what I do is I I eat
the same thing every day I wear the same
thing every day I choose to do the same
things every day really reading
journaling and run the study LIF like I
make my Youtube videoos on and that
allows me to live a more simple but more
meaningful life for me because within
the boredom within the Simplicity of it
all there is tremendous Beauty and
that's the thing that I love the most
about it the second point is compare
yourself to who you were yesterday and
not to who someone else is today when I
was 14 years old I deleted social media
I have a tendency to really be addicted
to certain things um like I get very
have an addictive personality that's why
I find it easier to eat the same thing
every day and wear the same thing every
day because when I get a cool outfit I
like I just wear that for a month and
the problem with social media is that it
becom it can become an addiction and I
think for me when I look at people on
social media it's so difficult to judge
yourself upon someone who's done so many
different things and it's so in such a
different standpoint than you so my
advice is when you see someone's Social
Media don't compare yourself to them get
a journal look at what you did yesterday
and only compare yourself to the person
you were yesterday and that allows you
to have this humbling ability to always
become be approving and growing and not
compare yourself to who someone else is
yesterday but compare yourself to who
someone is today and this really what
really helped me do this was I deleted
all Instagram and Snapchat and then
recently now I've tried to block off
YouTube as well because I find in that
really hard to focus on making these
videos as authentically as I can and as
myself and coming from me so you don't
have to delete social media but you have
to find a way to feel like you're in
control and have a choice and um I think
a lot of people like my age a lot of
guys a lot of girls don't have a choice
anymore to compare themselves to
themselves and if I give myself a piece
of advice is look get yourself a journal
or a Kindle scribe I love this thing sit
down ask yourself some questions and
just compare yourself to yourself stop
looking at what other everyone else is
doing and just focusing on yourself you
know have the self resect build this
Pride within yourself and that's one of
the things that makes me truly happy is
that when I look at myself and become
more proud of myself and happier Within
Myself I become a better person for my
girlfriend for my family for my friends
and my life becomes better because I
figured my own out and when you
become a bigger more centered person and
you comparing yourself to yourself
yesterday rather than anyone else today
you can grow and you can become a better
person the third one is similar to the
first point which is live a boring life
um I believe a boring life is more
important than a fancy life uh I've read
a lot of Ryan holiday's books which I
really recommend he goes over ego is the
enemy um discipline is the key
discipline is Destiny all those books I
love them but one thing that he stands
out with I don't think it was in his
books but he did a podcast on it is that
he said there's three components within
life work love and scene and you have to
pick two okay if you want to you cannot
do do all three really well so I'll give
you an example for like me at University
I've picked work and I've picked love
because I love my family I love my
girlfriend hello I can't do both of
those extremely well if I'm also
partying at University and getting drunk
and drinking a lot so I had to sacrifice
the party scene I have I have to
sacrifice drinking alcohol to do work
and love extremely well and also facts
for my health and make myself healthy
within that you know I really don't
think you can balance more than three or
five things and that's why making this
YouTube channel like this is one of the
only things except for studying and
working out I do because I want to put
all my energy into one or two things
that I can do for a long period of time
and become really good at and making my
life boring allows me to make things
that I wouldn't have been able to if I
wasn't as focused
on living a more focused life the fourth
point is your environment trumps well
recently after I finished my exams I be
got I come into a bit of a rra and the
reason for that is I switch between
these two different mindsets of you are
responsible to everything that happens
to you in your life and or you are a
victim to it and why I'm saying
environment trumps will is that if you
want to be a more disciplined person you
have to be disciplined with your
environment and I got this from a topic
habits book which is like really great I
highly recommend it as I was saying
about addictions and social media is
that you can either be a victim to it
and say oh I can't do anything I'm
addicted to it because the algorithm I'm
addicted to it because my phone's so
distracting when actually you have a
choice now to get rid of it block it put
limitations on it restrictions set
yourself some rules to be able to not
get as
distracted and that for me is when my
life changed when I stopped going to
social media as much I realized my
environment trumps my will and I
realized I need to take control and take
ownership over my life and that's when I
realized discipline is actually freedom
because it allows you to have the
freedom to become a person that you
wanted to be but your environment was
holding you back and let me tell you now
whatever environment you in I know it
can be hard but you can create a
different one because it is your
responsibility and whatever happens is
you're in your control okay I know this
might be a bit extreme view compared to
different things but for me that's what
worked I was never good at studying I
found it really hard to focus and
reading Atomic habits really helped me I
had this limiting belief of not thinking
I could study because of my dyslexia I
didn't even have a place to study
because i' never really thought about it
before and that's when I realized
environment trumps will I need to make
habits I need to make a place where I
can work where I can focus and in that
time I need to get rid of my phone I
need to get rid of distractions using
blocking apps using things to stop
myself from just getting distracted and
focusing really on what's essential and
there's this story within Atomic habits
where they talk about like people coming
back from Iraq and how a lot of them
were addicted to like cocaine and stuff
like that and the reason for that was
their environment because everyone else
was doing it and when they came back a
lot of them didn't relapse because they
were in a different environment and it
didn't make them do it so whatever your
cocaine is whatever your addiction is
and for me that social media and YouTube
and getting distracted with things like
that find a way to have control of it
through changing your
environment
so the next point the fifth point is
make friends with people who want what
is best for you um a couple of these
points are from the book 12 rules for
life by Jordan Peterson I love that book
it really helped me a lot and the reason
I say make friends with people who want
what's best for you is that I think a
lot of people are scared of being alone
and I'm the same I don't want to be
alone and we end up making friends with
people who aren't necessarily great for
us and um I'm very lucky because I have
an amazing family and my mom has always
wanted what's best for me my
girlfriend's amazing but I haven't had
the best of friends um and I don't think
they've ever wanted what's truly best
for me and I've had to make the choice
to actively move away from them and I
guess what I'm trying to say is be very
careful with the people you surround
yourself with because they can create in
a different environment that's outside
your control and I'm not saying be alone
but I'm saying be very careful with who
you surround yourself with because you
are an average of the people you
surround yourself with and sometimes you
have to cut them off and sometimes you
have to move forward and the way I think
about it is some friends like old
friends that you make are like old shoes
right and sometimes you outgrow them and
sometimes they don't fit anymore and
that's okay to move on and maybe in the
future you might come back to them and
they might be the perfect for but
sometimes it's okay to put them in a
closet and come back to them later and
that's the way I like to look about it
and the reason I say this is because if
you truly want to be great at whatever
you're doing out there you want to be
with people who bring you up and not
bring you down so when you're going out
on the weekend are you getting drunk are
you around all your friends and going
clubbing and then coming back and then
losing your whole weekend from drinking
and getting out control and I think it's
just sad sad it's self assisted
destruction you know and that's our
society and we promote it and it's very
hard to find friends that don't do that
but you have to wait and you have to be
patient for it if you don't want friends
like that and um for me I don't have
many friends because of that because a
lot of people at University are like
that and I'm okay with being a bit
lonely in a bit on my own with certain
things to
sacrifice not being friends with people
people who don't want what's best for me
the next point is talk less do more I
got this from ego is the Enemy by Ryan
holiday and this book like really
changed how I thought about myself
because I did have an ego I was really
attached to my achievements the things
I've done in my life and one thing that
he says in that book is that none of it
really
matters and if you want to do something
just go do it don't tell people about it
don't tell people your goals just go and
do it be silent I started this YouTube
channel I didn't tell anybody about it I
just did it okay because you don't need
to tell anyone and let the action do the
talking okay because the more you talk
about something the less it's getting
done and if you talk about it all right
it's almost like you're telling yourself
you've already done it and it's
something that I found really hard
initially to like not tell everyone oh
yeah I'm going to start your channel oh
yeah I'm going to do this I'm going to
do that and what you find is that a lot
of people say oh I'm going to do this
I'm going to do that I'm going to I'm
going to go on a diet I'm going to
change my body I'm going to work out
more I'm going to lose weight and what
happens they don't do it because when
they start telling other people it
becomes this egotistical thing where
it's not humble thing it's they're not
doing it for themselves they're doing it
for the recognition of others and for me
I've realized that whatever I do
whatever goals I have make them your own
you don't need to share them if they
truly truly matter to you you do not
need to tell anybody about them okay
because what will happen is that your
action will talk for you and that's
something that I realize and the seventh
point is do the thing um I think Chris
Williamson did this he talks about this
like quote that I made a video about
it really helped me because whatever
you're doing out there just do it just
do the thing that truly matters to you
don't talk about it you don't have to
always learn about it you can learn
through doing and that's how I made this
YouTube channel that's how I learned to
study I just started studying and then
learn and try to get better every single
time I did it okay and you learn through
doing you don't learn through watching
or seeing other people do it and
especially at this um year at University
I learned the difference between tacit
and explicit
knowledge and um explicit knowledge is
something that you can gain from like
writing down but then tacit knowledge is
the thing that is the most important
it's the thing that you learn through
doing and that's the thing within
businesses and doctors and transferring
that knowledge down is the hardest thing
to transfer because you can't gain it
through a book you gain it through
experience okay and that's the most
important type of knowledge and you only
get that through doing the thing the
next step is organize every day I've
talked about on this channel a lot time
blocking your time and I really believe
in it but I also believe in taking some
days off and being okay with riding the
wave and not knowing what's happening so
I think it's really important to have
strict schedules productivity I got this
from Carl newport's book and um it
really helped me so when I'm at
University I work from like 900 to 500
and treat it as a job and I would like
block off from 9: to 5: and make sure I
know what I'm doing within that time
block and then outside that time I would
work out after that to schedule for
myself that the working day was
over then I would do other things like
this YouTube
channel and I think for me it's
important to organize every day be
intentional where your time is going
with your work and your hours because
when it comes to a goal like doing one
in your exams or making a YouTube
channel the main thing that will get you
there is the time that you put into it
that's not distracted and the Deep work
hours okay and how you can do that is
just get a journal like I do and I write
down the blocks of time and track how
many hours you spend on a certain
project until it gets done and I find
that really helpful because if you do
that you can figure out like oh I need
to put more effort into it or I'm being
lazy and it really keeps you accountable
for yourself and that for me looking at
the time and looking at where my day is
that does the talking because if I can
see I'm putting effort into whatever I'm
doing that's all that truly
matters the ninth part is be bold not
smart um this is a TED Talk which will

really really helped me um is this
difference is this slight difference
between being smart and bold um smart
people are people like me and you um
when we try and do something we almost
always overthink it we think about
what's the worst thing that could happen
um what can I lose from this oh imagine

and getting people to judge you and um
like call you weird names or whatever
but being bold is always seeing
opportunities as something you can gain
from and not something you can lose from
and I think this attitude from being B
not smart is so important in life
because when I made friends at first
year and I was trying to go up to people
and talk to them I made this like 3
second rule I countdown to three and
I'll go and talk to them okay because
most of the time the best thing that can
happen is that you make a friend okay
and I was making sure that I was
focusing on what I can gain from not
from what I can lose and that
distinguish point is so so valuable look
at scary things
that you want to do something you can
gain from and not what you can lose from
and that's probably one of the most
important things that I try and do every
day to try and think about what I can
gain from a certain thing and not what I
can
lose
the the 10th point is trust your gut um
when I wanted to become a mechanical
engineer and do engineering I had this
gut feeling that I wanted to do it and
that Manchester where I am at University
it was the place for me and I'm so happy
I had that gut feeling and I trusted it
and I don't know how to describe it but
whatever your gut feeling is what you
want to do in your life and this gut
feeling of I need to leave my job or I
need to do this or I want to do that
just trust it and lean into it and
follow it and move forward from it and
yeah trust your got the 11th Point I've
learned this year especially is the at20
rule figure out whatever you're doing so
I'll give an example for me when I was
studying I figured out that 20% of my
effort equals 80% of my result okay and
for me that was doing really well in my
courseworks at University and doing all
the past papers I could so I realized if
I did all the past papers that's
probably the biggest thing that will
help me do well in my exams so I was
also making these YouTube videos on the
side and I realized I wanted to put less
time in to my exams this semester and
still do equally equally as well and
that's what I did I just put all my past
paper questions in Anki which is the
software I use and I just reviewed all
of them and I kind of went deep into
some of the questions but I just did it
surface level for me like if you don't
know UK universities you have to get
above 70% to be a
first and for me I just wanted to get
above 70% I didn't want to get above 90%
or anything I just wanted to do good
enough so that I can get the result I
wanted and I got like 75% I got first in
my second year which is good and what
I'm trying to say here is that whatever
you're doing whether it be in these
YouTube videos or or like working out I
try and focus on what the 20% of effort
will give me the 80% of the results so
say I'm working out I just do pull-ups
push-ups and squats if I'm under time
pressure and that will take me like 15
minutes and you can do that from any
where you don't have to go to a gym for
it and I've just tried to apply this
rule to everything in my life where can
I put the least amount of effort and
maximize the
results the 12th point is take it slow
work at natural pace and do fewer things
and this is from the book slow
productivity which I recently read and I
loved just take whatever you're doing
slowly when I study I try and do around
two hours a day and when you do that for
365 days you will you will do well in
your exams if those 2 hours are
optimized and they're efficient okay and
that's what I try and do with everything
is that I try and focus on taking it
slow but doing 1% every day okay and I
got this from Atomic habits as well
where every little action within your
life is actually so important
um and every little decision is so
important and this this podcast I
listened to yesterday it's about the
chaos theory where a little action can
Ripple on to something massive and I
think this can be really scary but also
can be very liberating because it makes
you feel like every moment every
decision you make is so important so
taking it slower and not rushing not
burning yourself out not cramming for
exams it's so much better and more
healthy for yourself and whatever you're
doing out there just take it slow do
fewer things and work work at an actual
Pace um the next one is say
no uh this is something that I really
struggled with initially but I'm getting
a lot better with now was with this
YouTube channel a guy from yes Theory
he's called Thomas he talks about this
thing where when you say no to someone
else you're saying yes to yourself and I
think that's so important because
whatever you're saying no to you're also
saying yes to yourself and no is is a
complete sentence okay it's good to have
boundaries it's good to tell people like
you prioritize yourself it's good to say
no and it's good to prioritize yourself
and know what your boundaries are and
stick with them and say to someone okay
look I can't meet up with you now
because I'm doing this do you want to
meet up then and not always be a Yes Man
and that's one of the biggest things in
my relationship which has really helped
me is because I know where I'm going I
have a Direction
and I think my girlfriend likes that
about me because she knows that I'm not
just going to say yes to everything and
that's really good that's really healthy
um the next Point especially with a
relationship which is good is be
consistently good rather than
occasionally great this is like a big
thing for me it's about consistency it's
about showing up it's about doing the
thing it's about not just doing once one
like amazing thing every now and then
just be good every day and like for me
I'll give you an example for working out
I work out and do the same workout
almost every day so if you don't know I
do high frequency training so I do
calisthenics and I do like pullups P
push-ups and like squats every day and I
do like it's like a 20-minute workout
and for me that really works because I'm
consistently good rather than
occasionally great rather than just
doing like one leg workout every week
and just killing my legs and then the
next day I can't walk
and I found this to be the very best way
to do everything when it comes to
studying to my relationship to
everything in my life so try and be
consistently good rather than
occasionally great and that sometimes
means not running as far sometimes not
studying as much but but coming again
tomorrow you know the 15th life lesson
I've learned is the two-day rule um when
it comes to your habits or whatever
you're doing I use this especially for
run morning I run every other day and I
never miss two days so I never let there
be two days where I don't run and that
for me is really important so I say like
oh yesterday I ran today I walked and
tomorrow I know I need to run and if I
don't run I've miss the two-day Rule and
that's something that I stick with and
this really works with studying as well
so if you miss one day of studying you
have to do something the next day okay
and the two-day rule is just very very
useful
the 16th point is love um I read this
book called like maximizing achievement
or something like that uh it's quite a
cool book but it's kind of like like
weirdly psychological and weird but the
the ending of the book was amazing for
me because it talks about love as the
main thing and the main purpose of life
and have to say whatever you're doing
out there make sure you love the journey
make sure you love what you're doing and
you love the people around you and you
show love every day and it's one of
those things that I sometimes forget the
importance of love the importance of it
and truly loving what you do every day
and the people that you surround
yourself with and yeah just remember to
love um the next point is it's never the
right time for anything something I've
realized recently is nobody has it
figured out um
with me starting this YouTube channel I
don't think it would have ever been the
right time and place and moment to do it
but you just have to go and do it um and
sometimes it's never the right time for
anything and that's why you just have to
go do it uh I'll give you an example
like for me like asking my girlfriend
out it was never the right time to do it
um for me making this YouTube channel it
would have never been the right time
because it's always changing and media
is always different and creating
something on the Internet is always so
difficult you know so it's never the
right time for anything so start
whatever you want to start whatever you
feel like you love just start it and
just try it and see what happens um I
don't know why I wrote this down as a
life lesson but um eat
breakfast uh as a student we can
sometimes forget routine and I guess I
think this is the thing I'm trying to
talk about here is routine is um
following something every day and for me
that is eating breakfast I wake up I
move and I eat okay and those that
little thing every morning having that
morning routine having that structure
really helps me to stay focused and stay
happy throughout the
day and having that discipline to eat
something to make sure I discipline
myself to eat something ripples on for
the rest of the day and make sure you're
disciplined with that um when you go to
university because I know a lot of my
friends that forget to eat um and they
find it hard to make breakfast with
themselves in the morning but if you can
discipline yourself to do that and that
first action in the morning where you
cook yourself a breakfast like eggs on
toast or something it really helps um um
the next life lesson is uh do fewer
things I I I'll just call this like run
study left find out what you're really
focused on and just focus on that um set
a goal and just remind yourself of it
every time you wake up in the morning
and find out whatever your three things
are every day and that's why I make my
Vlogs about run study and lifting
because they're my main three goals and
there's some goals that like truly like
resonate with me like I really want to
master my body and my mind and I really
want to be true to myself and yeah um
that's something that I find extremely
valuable to be honest to just have
through three things at your staple that
you do every day that helps you have
that ground aim have a direction and a
purpose the final thing I've like want
to end with is invest in yourself be it
like reading buying books for yourself
be it buying a cheap pull-up bar to put
on your door when you're at University
be it going to the gym getting a gym
membership be it okay buying a bit more
food that's healthy for you I think I
got this from Alex hosi he talks about
the SNP 500 or the smme 500 and if you
got money don't always just save it I I
know it's like a contrarian view I think
if you got money put it into yourself
because if you can create money with
being healthy with being happy that's
the best thing you know and you'll get
the biggest return investment over just
saving your money so invest in your
health invest in you invest in books
invest in knowledge invest in courses
invest in like some sort of thing to
make you learn
better whatever is out there just do
your thing hope you have a beautiful
