๐Ÿ’กE-Myth

Highlights

The guest, Dominic Rubino, is the head business coach of 10x BLT, a company that provides business coaching services.

Rubino shares how he transitioned from being a trade contractor (painter and small renovations) to becoming a business coach since the year 2000.

Rubino's company stands out from other business coaches by focusing on the "business of business," i.e., the operational aspects of running a successful business.

Rubino emphasizes the importance of understanding the numbers that drive a business, such as the cost of acquiring customers and tracking the customer journey through different touchpoints.

He recommends writing down the customer journey, from initial contact to invoice payment, as a way to identify the numbers to track and improve processes.

Rubino highlights that accountants are not necessarily good business people, as they focus on counting and tax mitigation, while entrepreneurs should look towards the future and have a vision to build their businesses.

He emphasizes the importance of discipline and mindset, suggesting that curious entrepreneurs who ask "how can I" or "what if" questions are more likely to benefit from business coaching.

Rubino believes there is a temperament for being an entrepreneur, and those who have a burning desire for their business to succeed but feel alone can benefit from coaching and associations that provide like-minded connections.

He recommends reading Michael Gerber's book "The E-Myth Revisited" as a seminal resource for understanding the roles of an entrepreneur, manager, and technician.

Rubino highlights that people don't want money itself but rather what they can do with it, such as taking care of family members, paying for their children's expenses, or having the flexibility to be present for their kids' activities.

He encourages listeners to reflect on what they want to achieve with their money, whether it's taking care of their loved ones, being present for their children, or having the dignity of creating something for themselves.

Rubino emphasizes that some people are not suited for being employees and taking orders, so being self-employed allows them to manage their own destiny and align with their identity as self-made individuals.

Rubino invites listeners to check out his podcast "Profit Tool Belt" and attend his free webinars to learn more about his philosophy and coaching approach before considering working with him.

He recognizes that not everyone may resonate with his style, but encourages those interested to explore his content and reach out if they find a good fit.

interesting title he is the head

in the past and so we're going to talk

today about helping you run your

play01:49

wildlife living the wildlife podcast

play01:52

yeah I'm excited to be here thank you

play01:54

very much hi everybody so tell us a

play01:56

little about your yourself how you got

play01:58

into this side of the business and then

play02:00

get into what you can do for our our

play02:03

audience

play02:04

yeah

play02:04

gee you know how I got into this is gray

play02:07

hair and wrinkles

play02:09

that's it okay

play02:11

yeah no no no I've been a business coach

play02:13

since the year 2000. okay a very long

play02:16

time and I came out of the corporate

play02:17

world and before that I was a trade

play02:19

contractor right trade as you mentioned

play02:22

I did painting and small Renovations a

play02:24

lot of the things actually that the

play02:25

professionals here would do where you

play02:27

guys are patching a hole that a raccoon

play02:28

made or you know that little stuff

play02:30

sometimes I had to do as a painter as

play02:32

well because the homeowner says well

play02:34

you're up there with the ladder anyway

play02:35

might as well do it yeah might as well

play02:37

do it yeah because you can't get anybody

play02:39

else to do it there's no yeah because I

play02:40

don't have a ladder right but she still

play02:42

complained about the price

play02:44

it makes no sense

play02:46

um and of course I was a kid so I got

play02:48

pushed around a lot in on pricing on um

play02:51

on callbacks on neighbors saying that I

play02:54

oversprayed their house and now I had to

play02:56

cut wax their vehicle you guys might not

play02:57

have to deal with that but you probably

play02:59

have that neighbor thing where why are

play03:01

you removing that beautiful animal and

play03:03

you know you're trying to do a job uh

play03:05

you're trying to provide a service

play03:06

you're trying to do it ethically and

play03:08

within the you know the the state

play03:09

federal rules but somebody has an

play03:11

opinion and as you know opinions are

play03:13

like elbows so everybody's got about two

play03:16

of them two of them so there you go

play03:18

that's that's a clever that's a clever

play03:20

phrase yeah there's a there's a worse

play03:21

phrase but I don't uh I don't cuss so

play03:23

okay all right

play03:26

and so you've got into this you got into

play03:28

being a business coach so how does your

play03:31

company differentiate from other forms

play03:33

of business coaches that are out there

play03:35

yeah you know that's a really good

play03:37

question so today I want to talk about

play03:39

everything that has to do with the

play03:41

business of business and that's really

play03:43

where we stand out there's lots of

play03:46

business coaches out there Stephen as

play03:47

you probably know you have to go find

play03:49

the one that resonates with you and some

play03:51

people are going to listen to this

play03:52

interview and hate me and that's fine

play03:53

you know you're still going to get great

play03:54

info but you're going to leave it going

play03:56

I'm never talking to Rubino or any of

play03:58

his crew and other people will say well

play04:00

that was interesting maybe I'll find out

play04:02

more so everybody has to follow the path

play04:04

they want first of all but

play04:07

what makes us different is we're

play04:09

business owners who also do business

play04:11

coaching and that's very different and

play04:13

can I tell you a little bit about my

play04:15

professional absolutely oh absolutely

play04:16

okay yeah absolutely almost none of it

play04:19

is Pest Control unless you count my

play04:21

house

play04:22

okay so I'm under constant attack by

play04:24

starlings rats which makes me feel bad

play04:27

by the way yeah I don't like admitting I

play04:29

have rats because it makes me feel like

play04:30

I have a dirty house which we don't

play04:32

right you don't have to have a dirty it

play04:33

depends what part of the country you're

play04:35

in but like with California it's normal

play04:37

for a roof rats to be roaming through

play04:39

people's backyards it's oh my God

play04:41

perfectly normal yeah yeah we've got

play04:43

we've got it and I live near a park one

play04:45

and the park is across the street from

play04:46

my house right so Pacific Northwest I'm

play04:48

up okay the pack Northwest so we've cut

play04:50

starlings we've got rats we've got

play04:52

raccoons uh from time to time we have

play04:55

coyotes I'm not sure if the coyotes eat

play04:57

the raccoons or not I know they you know

play04:58

the raccoons might win in that fight but

play05:01

they might know right it depends on how

play05:03

how skilled the coyote would be but yeah

play05:05

there's

play05:07

raccoons would just typically climb a

play05:08

tree if they can find it fast enough

play05:10

sure get out of there and then the worst

play05:12

pest we have in my neighborhood are the

play05:13

neighbors who feed said animals yes yeah

play05:16

feeders and so I have to deal with that

play05:17

and then you know we have bears but uh

play05:20

not so much in my part of town but you

play05:21

drive about 20 minutes and there's Bears

play05:23

there's actually cougars in my town and

play05:25

so but we don't deal with those you know

play05:27

anyways

play05:29

um

play05:30

so my background though is I started in

play05:33

painting and then I I was I sucked at

play05:35

business I was horrendous at it and the

play05:39

worst day of my life was a day that I uh

play05:41

I had an anniversary with my girlfriend

play05:42

you know this is college right

play05:44

really nice girl I had this 77 Dodge

play05:48

Tradesman van if you saw it now you'd

play05:50

bring your children inside it was a

play05:52

horrible looking van right it was just

play05:54

horrible and um it broke down on the job

play05:57

site and it was our anniversary and you

play05:59

probably already know where the story's

play06:00

going I didn't have the money to pay to

play06:02

fix the van I didn't have the money to

play06:04

take her to dinner so that night she

play06:05

picked me up from the house we were

play06:07

painting

play06:08

and she took me to dinner and she paid

play06:10

it wow and I got to tell you I felt so

play06:13

small like like

play06:15

I don't I mean I don't want over share

play06:17

but I felt like a failure right you know

play06:20

it just wasn't I was working so hard I

play06:22

was getting referrals people loved me I

play06:25

knew how to paint a house I thought I

play06:27

could do it efficiently and make money

play06:28

at it but I would I could not I could

play06:30

not rub two cents together and save my

play06:32

life and something was wrong so my uncle

play06:34

I come from an Italian family so my

play06:37

uncle's you know he's got one of those

play06:38

Italian Uncle Julio okay I used to work

play06:41

for him as a framer and I'm like maybe

play06:43

I'll go ask my Uncle because you know he

play06:45

must know about business he's a framer

play06:46

and so he started asking me all these

play06:48

questions about my business and they all

play06:50

had to do with numbers like how much did

play06:52

this cost you how much you paying for

play06:53

that what's your overheads I'm like I

play06:54

don't know I don't know now my favorite

play06:57

uncle turns to me and goes look if you

play06:59

don't know your numbers you're just a

play07:00

dummy with an opinion

play07:03

ouch how's that he's still my favorite

play07:04

uncle but man he hit me in the head that

play07:06

was that was some hard truth that was

play07:07

some hard truth there yeah yeah anyways

play07:10

I went on to take a bunch of business

play07:11

courses and

play07:13

um but entrepreneurship courses not at

play07:15

school but what I took at school has

play07:18

nothing to do with anything and I I

play07:19

turned around a business that had

play07:21

previously just been a side company and

play07:23

in four years I got it up to 120 million

play07:25

in sales and I sold it

play07:28

yeah okay well you got my attention so

play07:31

there you go what we're talking about

play07:33

you know hopefully we talk about some of

play07:35

these things here today yeah you're

play07:37

you're going to be surprised it has more

play07:38

to do with discipline and mindset okay

play07:40

than it does anything else

play07:43

so discipline and mindset so let's

play07:45

unpack that a little bit

play07:47

um because your uncle mentioned the the

play07:49

numbers

play07:50

and and I I'm totally on board with them

play07:53

because that was certainly something

play07:54

that I struggled with that I that I did

play07:56

we all do we all do and so if you're so

play07:59

in terms of the discipline and mindset

play08:00

would you say that that's

play08:02

what would be some of those numbers that

play08:05

someone who's you know they're new in

play08:07

their business or maybe they're under

play08:08

five years you know that five year break

play08:10

that's supposed to be like such a

play08:12

cliffhanger there yeah what what numbers

play08:14

should they should they begin to pay

play08:16

attention to straight off like you know

play08:18

what's the the quick the quick route

play08:20

here that they need to start with yeah

play08:22

this is probably going to surprise you

play08:24

because it surprised the heck out of me

play08:26

but it's actually not the accounting

play08:28

numbers like the B the p l and the

play08:30

balance sheet those are they are numbers

play08:33

but those aren't the operational numbers

play08:35

oh and it took me a long time to figure

play08:38

out is that my accountant's job is to

play08:41

reduce the amount of taxes I pay

play08:43

right

play08:44

my job as a business coach is to

play08:46

increase the amount of profit you make

play08:48

and so I care about different numbers I

play08:50

care about the things my Uncle Julio

play08:52

asked me about I didn't know at the time

play08:53

because I'm a dummy right right uh or

play08:56

has he said I'm a dummy with an opinion

play08:59

um

play09:00

I have to know how many leads how many

play09:02

people called me that month how many of

play09:04

those people became estimates right how

play09:06

many of those estimates became jobs

play09:09

and this is really what he was pushing

play09:11

for is a number that I now call

play09:13

acquisition cost what does it cost me to

play09:15

buy a customer from the market

play09:17

and that's all these people that you

play09:19

know oh I do online marketing just for

play09:21

Pest Control just for wildlife okay

play09:23

they're selling you customers you're

play09:25

gonna pay x amount of thousands of

play09:27

dollars to run ads on Facebook or

play09:29

wherever you do it they're trying to

play09:30

help you buy customers

play09:32

it doesn't matter if you do no marketing

play09:34

at all or you spend Millions on

play09:36

marketing you still have a cost to

play09:38

buying customers that's it those kind of

play09:40

numbers we don't think about they don't

play09:42

teach us in school right at all

play09:45

and so that's those are the kind of

play09:46

numbers we have to follow

play09:48

and so

play09:50

as I as we before the show started we

play09:53

talked about the time constraints that

play09:56

are on our Wildlife Control operators so

play09:59

what would be the way that they need to

play10:01

generate that because they already have

play10:03

paperwork was something that I certainly

play10:05

hated to do and people that get into

play10:07

Wildlife Control are not known to be you

play10:11

know if they wanted to read books and

play10:12

stare at a computer all day they would

play10:14

have gone to a different career path

play10:16

yeah you'd be an insurance agent right

play10:17

exactly right so this is where so how do

play10:20

how do they

play10:21

gather that information to get the kind

play10:24

of answers that you're looking to the

play10:26

questions that you're asking so that's

play10:28

that's efficient is there a software is

play10:31

it can they do it freehand what is the

play10:33

way that they would do that so first

play10:36

keep in mind the numbers I just told you

play10:37

are a couple of numbers right but no no

play10:39

I got one if you if you want to know all

play10:41

of the numbers then here's and this is

play10:43

business coach talking so I'm going to

play10:45

talk to everybody as if we're having a

play10:46

coffee and sure we're huddle over table

play10:48

and nobody's listening and we're working

play10:49

at it right

play10:51

get a blank piece of paper and a pen

play10:54

leave the office get a cup of coffee

play10:56

face the corner at a really nice coffee

play10:58

shop and just sit down on your own don't

play11:00

let anybody bug you

play11:01

and write down your customer Journey

play11:04

like how does the customer deal what you

play11:06

know you would call it the sales flow

play11:08

like I get a phone call or somebody

play11:10

contacts me by email or text right and

play11:13

HOA calls me doesn't matter right but

play11:16

then I return that phone call

play11:18

then I go have a meeting

play11:20

then I give them an estimate then I do

play11:22

the job put all those things down in a

play11:24

list my friend you now have numbers

play11:26

attached to each of those things right

play11:29

your number is going to be different

play11:30

than mine and you know we can talk about

play11:32

the magic number everybody has a magic

play11:34

number

play11:35

um but now you've got your numbers

play11:37

those are the numbers to track and at

play11:39

the very very bottom of that list is

play11:42

when you send the invoice to the

play11:43

customer and you get paid hopefully

play11:45

right at the same time or just before

play11:47

yeah after that come the financials the

play11:50

balance sheet and the profit loss okay

play11:52

and that's the numbers we tend to we

play11:55

forget I'm going to say this and I don't

play11:57

care if there's any accountants

play11:58

listening accountants are not good

play11:59

business people they're good at counting

play12:01

they're called accountants not business

play12:03

people

play12:04

so they're good at counting they're good

play12:06

at tax mitigation they're good at being

play12:08

very afraid of the sky is going to fall

play12:09

on their heads

play12:11

and and telling you what already

play12:13

happened because their accountants right

play12:15

right if you want to be an entrepreneur

play12:16

you want to look towards the future if

play12:17

you want to build your own and you don't

play12:20

have to build a thousand vehicle

play12:23

of pest control you can have one or just

play12:26

you doesn't matter but you still have to

play12:28

have some Future Vision you're working

play12:29

towards something that pulls you more

play12:31

than you're getting pushed and those

play12:32

numbers help

play12:34

so yeah that sounds very you know very

play12:38

straightforward and then that per I

play12:40

would have suspect as the person's going

play12:42

through this list they probably could

play12:43

find a couple places where they can make

play12:45

that process less painful for themselves

play12:47

and the customer yeah well can I

play12:50

interrupt you for a second

play12:51

I'm foaming like I'm like okay I gotta

play12:54

say this you know how you mentioned now

play12:56

two or three times that you get pulled

play12:58

ahead of yourself like it's so busy

play12:59

you're always busy you're running right

play13:01

yeah

play13:01

so at the very top of that process you

play13:04

get a phone call and I'll just say phone

play13:05

call whatever somebody contacts me right

play13:07

and then oh I'm oh my God I got a lead

play13:09

and you turn to your wife or your spouse

play13:11

and you say honey I got a lead it's an

play13:13

hour away can you take the kids to

play13:15

baseball I gotta get this job and now

play13:18

you drive an hour there

play13:21

do whatever you got to do the little

play13:22

dance which we don't want to do then you

play13:24

drive an hour back and maybe you got the

play13:26

job but what happens is your kid

play13:28

is at bat yeah finally hit the hit and

play13:32

Dad wasn't there or Mom I'm just you

play13:34

know just sure

play13:35

and this is where when I see those

play13:38

numbers I have to realize hey I don't go

play13:40

on every service call everybody you can

play13:42

ask for me but I might not be available

play13:44

and I have a service area that I work

play13:46

within and I have service times that I

play13:48

work within

play13:49

uh I got ahead of steam here Stephen can

play13:51

I keep going keep going absolutely so I

play13:54

think you're in Montana right I am yeah

play13:57

so I've I've had lots of ranching

play13:58

buddies from my past in the business and

play14:01

okay one of the best lines I ever heard

play14:03

was from a Rancher friend of mine Aaron

play14:05

Collins he goes look Dom if you stand

play14:08

for nothing you're going to fall for

play14:09

anything right

play14:10

if I accept somebody saying you know

play14:13

come by and look at our raccoon Problem

play14:14

whatever the pest issue sure sure and I

play14:16

just run off as if they're the most

play14:18

important person in the world I'm not

play14:19

doing a service to me my business or my

play14:21

family

play14:23

and so that's time to pump the brakes

play14:25

and see does that customer qualify to be

play14:28

your customers

play14:30

so you qualify the customer so you have

play14:33

you can help those Wildlife Control

play14:35

operators and Pest Control operators

play14:37

help them go through that process and

play14:40

fine-tune that process now right because

play14:42

I think it's a fair question you know

play14:44

are you making money on that call I mean

play14:47

I think some of the problems was is that

play14:49

you're like

play14:50

I knew I was making money on a job I'll

play14:52

just use myself but you know some jobs I

play14:55

lost I'm sure I lost money on and I

play14:58

shouldn't have and and I would wonder

play15:00

how often that's occurring for us in our

play15:02

industry yeah I mean I just here's a

play15:05

funny example but it's painful it's only

play15:07

funny when we're talking about here

play15:09

somebody listening is going to be

play15:10

banging their head on the steering wheel

play15:12

as they say it well we right we wanted

play15:15

to be less painful for them than it was

play15:16

for us but I'm gonna say it anyway right

play15:19

you know I like the Joker you can

play15:21

already tell them absolutely yeah it's

play15:23

fine

play15:24

we'll look at the pricing structure of a

play15:25

company

play15:26

and they'll say Dom you know what our

play15:28

pricing is solid we're very confident in

play15:30

our pricing and you know we'll start to

play15:31

pick it apart I'm not trying to be

play15:33

smarter I'm trying to be very very

play15:34

curious

play15:36

that's my job as a business coach to be

play15:38

very curious and draw the question draw

play15:41

the answers out with good questions and

play15:43

so this is a typical thing that we find

play15:44

is okay you've got great pricing tell me

play15:46

how you come up with your price and so

play15:48

there's obviously formulas for that but

play15:50

we're ahead of ourselves a bit Yeah and

play15:52

they'll say well you know what we're so

play15:53

good we charge mileage

play15:55

we charge mileage if they're outside of

play15:57

our zone I'm like well that's fantastic

play15:59

but then I come back with a question

play16:00

don't you pay your guys by the hour

play16:05

now that doesn't seem like a big deal

play16:07

but if I saved you 10 bucks a day and

play16:09

you work 250 days a year you just saved

play16:13

that much money

play16:16

and this game is a game of inches

play16:20

just like it is I imagine when you're

play16:21

trying to eliminate pests you try the

play16:24

first things and then you get Tighter

play16:26

and Tighter and Tighter in your controls

play16:27

that's the same thing in business just

play16:29

keep at it get Tighter and Tighter and

play16:31

Tighter

play16:32

yeah so I like your you know you're

play16:35

going to help this you're going to help

play16:36

this individual

play16:38

you're gonna

play16:40

start helping them question what they're

play16:43

doing so that you can find hopefully

play16:46

together find a better way of doing it

play16:48

so they either save money or make more

play16:51

money or buy a combination of both and

play16:53

ultimately their profit is greater and

play16:55

then their accountant can yell at them

play16:56

about how many taxes they're paying well

play16:58

that's the worst problem in the world

play17:00

isn't it that's right and again there

play17:01

comes the accountant after the horses

play17:03

out of the barn that's right okay hold

play17:05

on yeah yeah so so in terms of the

play17:08

process so someone calls you how does

play17:11

the how does the process start when

play17:13

they're if they call you and say you

play17:14

know I I like Dom I like the chemistry

play17:17

because that's kind of what you

play17:18

mentioned earlier the chemistry with the

play17:19

coach I'd like to explore this I need

play17:22

someone to help me walk through this

play17:25

process what is the process for starting

play17:26

that relationship with you you know yeah

play17:29

at least for us we like to get to know

play17:31

people and so as you know I have a

play17:32

podcast it's called profit tool belt

play17:34

profit tool belt folks there you go belt

play17:38

podcast yeah or as my really good

play17:40

friends like to bug me when I show up

play17:42

with my branded profit tool belt vest is

play17:45

that profit tool belt are you selling

play17:47

leather belts like no

play17:50

no no no they they love to take apart my

play17:53

brand names but that's that's what good

play17:54

friends do

play17:56

um and then you know I I run free

play17:58

webinars free trainings so you should

play18:01

you should go consume everything you can

play18:03

of mine and if you're still not sick of

play18:05

it then send me a text or call me that's

play18:07

I would say do your research right yeah

play18:09

so this is so they can get a sense of

play18:12

what your philosophy is your style is by

play18:15

listening to your podcast you have an

play18:17

idea of how many shows they probably

play18:19

person should listen to to kind of get

play18:20

the feel to say yeah this is a fit I

play18:22

need to to go through I don't no I mean

play18:26

you kind of know you know first of all

play18:27

we work with people who are who have the

play18:30

right mindset it has it has more to do

play18:32

with mindset than it has to do with the

play18:34

size of your company you know there's a

play18:36

gentleman we work with in the Northeast

play18:38

who's a one-man

play18:40

um

play18:43

handyman sorry he's a handyman

play18:45

he came to us he was doing a couple

play18:47

hundred grand a year but he was the guy

play18:48

I was talking about couldn't get to his

play18:50

daughter's baseball game and then when

play18:52

he did

play18:53

she said this to him Dad how come you're

play18:55

always on your phone oh

play18:57

right and that's

play18:59

is that what you want is that why you

play19:01

had kids right so anyways we had to get

play19:04

in there and help him put systems in

play19:05

place

play19:06

and those systems were around putting

play19:08

the having the right vision for where he

play19:10

wanted to take the company which was his

play19:12

vision it's not ours we don't give him a

play19:14

vision right he asked the questions to

play19:16

get his vision and then you build the

play19:17

company around that well he's about to

play19:19

sell that company

play19:21

and not for nothing

play19:23

that's yeah

play19:25

I I was listening to a sidebar here I

play19:28

think it's so important for the audience

play19:30

to understand that your goal if you're

play19:32

not handing your company off to your

play19:35

children

play19:36

and unfortunately so many children are

play19:38

two let me just put this bluntly too

play19:40

stupid not to see the opportunity

play19:43

because of the family issues that they

play19:45

have or where they're going to find

play19:46

their own way blah blah blah but

play19:48

nevertheless you want to be a good place

play19:50

where you can sell your company that's

play19:52

the goal and and so because that's what

play19:55

you're building so you're not only

play19:56

making money for a living but you're

play19:58

building something that you can get a

play19:59

big cash infusion from but do talk a

play20:02

little bit more about that what are some

play20:04

of the qualities that mindset is that

play20:06

something you've mentioned a couple of

play20:07

times already and what are some of the

play20:10

elements of that mindset that someone

play20:13

needs to have I've been thinking a lot

play20:15

about this lately because I I asked that

play20:17

same question on my side we're always

play20:18

thinking about how people think right in

play20:22

in business I want to think about my

play20:24

customers conversation at the kitchen

play20:26

table because that's where I want to

play20:28

have the impact so that they make the

play20:29

decision to work with us right

play20:32

the mindset you're going to find it so

play20:35

interesting and I'm trying to come up

play20:36

with I'm trying to get data for this

play20:38

I think if anybody's listening to a

play20:40

podcast on improving their business they

play20:42

already have that like they're already

play20:43

facing north their feet and their nose

play20:46

are facing the right direction now

play20:48

whether they all want to do it you know

play20:49

it's totally different but who is who

play20:53

who would benefit from coaching is

play20:54

somebody who's curious about it first

play20:56

because you can't force somebody to get

play20:57

coached right do you remember putting

play20:59

your kids in little leagues or in entry

play21:01

soccer and there's there's one kid he or

play21:03

she can't wait to score there's another

play21:05

kid that's making little castles out of

play21:07

gravel and sitting there

play21:10

spitting circles it's super cute but

play21:11

they don't want to be a soccer player

play21:13

right and then you got one kid he's like

play21:16

I'm the greatest four-year-old soccer

play21:18

player in the world well the other 19

play21:19

kids are just standing there of course

play21:21

you are

play21:24

yeah so I think I I actually believe

play21:27

that there is a a temperament

play21:32

for someone to be an entrepreneur I

play21:34

think that not everyone is wired that

play21:37

way at least since I'm speaking for

play21:39

myself I don't see myself as an

play21:41

entrepreneur I I see myself as

play21:45

the second in command of a company

play21:48

and the problem is is no one hires the

play21:50

second in command uh so that's certainly

play21:54

a mistake on my part but the I do think

play21:56

because when I see people that have been

play21:58

successful in their business

play22:00

um other than you know just happenstance

play22:03

sometimes people just get lucky right

play22:04

they're not really that skilled but I

play22:06

see people in in Wildlife Control where

play22:08

they were able to bring their business

play22:10

to a place where they're able to hire

play22:12

people they were able to

play22:16

and have that that's a different skill

play22:18

not everyone has that some people are so

play22:20

I gotta control everything they're not

play22:23

me and they're always going to stay

play22:24

small and that takes a special skill and

play22:26

I think there's a you have to have some

play22:28

Grit

play22:29

to go through the agony at times for

play22:33

being an entrepreneur because customers

play22:34

can be brutal to you and it's tough yeah

play22:37

so this goes to your other question is

play22:39

who who benefits from coaching and again

play22:41

I don't not that I don't care if

play22:43

somebody works with me I'm just saying

play22:44

in general is somebody who realizes that

play22:48

listening to this show that realizes hey

play22:50

I'm a little bit different yeah I don't

play22:52

talk the same as everybody else if I try

play22:53

to talk to my employees about things

play22:55

they don't care they're there for the

play22:56

hour or the salary and quite often we

play22:59

get business owners who have this

play23:01

Burning Desire but feel like they're

play23:03

alone how come I'm the only one who

play23:05

wants this business to succeed and and

play23:08

who do I talk to that also wants that

play23:10

well of course you get somebody on your

play23:11

team like that or you start to hang out

play23:13

with other people which is why you would

play23:15

join an industry Association Link in

play23:16

your industry right you go you go hang

play23:19

out with those people and you leave

play23:20

energized right and that's what what

play23:23

obviously business coaching is a lot

play23:25

more formal than that but that's what

play23:27

you do is you get around people who are

play23:30

also forward-facing who are saying

play23:32

they're asking the big questions and the

play23:34

big questions you know you're asking the

play23:36

big question when your question starts

play23:38

with How can I

play23:40

or what if

play23:43

now I stole that from Michael Gerber's

play23:46

e-myth Revisited and I've been using it

play23:48

for 23 years great great book oh great

play23:51

Stephen I call it the most painful book

play23:53

I ever read yeah no you got to go back

play23:55

to the year 2000 in my small little

play23:57

townhouse I'm engaged to my beautiful

play23:59

wife I love the time I was she was just

play24:02

my girlfriend but

play24:03

um I would read that book and I'm pacing

play24:05

up and down the the living room she's

play24:07

like what are you doing and I'm like

play24:08

this book is so good but I would read

play24:10

two pages and close it and smack it

play24:11

against my head and let it open again

play24:14

I'm like I'm not doing this and I'm not

play24:17

kidding that book is seminal like it is

play24:18

it it really is

play24:21

it it really cuts to the core of the

play24:24

entrepreneur the manager and the

play24:25

technician and if we stay in that

play24:27

technician like the guy baiting the

play24:29

traps you're limiting yourself in the

play24:31

company if you're listening to a show

play24:32

like this you're in entrepreneur mode

play24:34

how can we do mole control how can we

play24:37

understand you know how can we have

play24:39

better gloves for bats I was looking at

play24:40

some of your previous episodes those are

play24:42

the big questions that a leader has to

play24:43

tackle yeah and I think that's and I

play24:46

think that's the challenge you know the

play24:49

transitioning from those different roles

play24:54

takes it takes takes some pain and a in

play24:58

a a comfortableness with on being

play25:00

uncomfortable yeah that not everyone can

play25:03

transition through I mean I think that's

play25:05

certainly the case for me

play25:07

uh which I guess the benefit would be

play25:09

know your limitations that can be

play25:11

important you know self-discovery but

play25:13

the but that e-myth book I think is

play25:16

imperative for people to read and I I I

play25:18

couldn't agree with you more that book

play25:19

was like I didn't I haven't read the

play25:21

revised version but the old one was like

play25:23

oh my gosh how many mistakes that I make

play25:25

it was it was like this was wonderful

play25:28

for me it was one per two pages and

play25:30

that's why I kept smacking myself in

play25:31

that minute I think I read it after I

play25:33

sold my company so it was uh so I I

play25:38

think was more so for me it was

play25:39

reflecting back to what I did brought

play25:42

did this wrong did this wrong you just

play25:44

you just reminded me from jumping from

play25:47

the e-myth to what people really want

play25:48

not everybody wants more money

play25:50

so if you're if you're not driven if

play25:53

you're listening to this show for

play25:54

instance going now that robino guy's

play25:55

cool Steven's got a good perspective but

play25:57

I don't really want more money I'm happy

play25:59

it actually goes to this crazy name that

play26:01

we have why is it called 10x built BLT

play26:03

well as as you can already tell I like

play26:06

to goof around even though I'm as

play26:07

serious as Sin like I'm very serious but

play26:10

I like to laugh along the way well built

play26:12

it comes from people don't want money

play26:15

they want what they can do with the

play26:17

money now on the serious side you want

play26:19

to take care of your mom because she's

play26:21

sick and she took care of your whole

play26:22

life and she's in a shared room in a

play26:25

hospital and you want better for her on

play26:27

the Goof and around side the B and the L

play26:29

and the t is because you want to drive a

play26:31

bigger boat to a nicer lake with a newer

play26:33

truck BLT

play26:35

right right it's not it's not I'll give

play26:37

you an example there's a guy named Dan

play26:38

who worked with us and he came in one of

play26:40

our because we did coaching programs

play26:41

right he came in this like put your toe

play26:43

in the water kind of program yeah and

play26:45

which is fine you know people you choose

play26:47

your your experience right

play26:49

this wasn't what he came in with but he

play26:51

got on on coaching call one day and he

play26:53

goes guys my daughter just needed braces

play26:56

and I paid Seven Grand by writing a

play26:59

check and he like he was standing so

play27:01

tall because he paid for his daughter's

play27:04

braces

play27:05

he's just a dad he just happens to be a

play27:08

Tradesman but he's a dad and that's you

play27:11

know so when you go you know who does

play27:13

coaching and what's the we know what do

play27:14

I get I you tell me is it taking care of

play27:17

your mom is to take care of your

play27:18

daughter is it being there in the stands

play27:20

without your phone on so you can watch

play27:22

your your son or your daughter right

play27:24

yeah no there's dignity there's dignity

play27:26

in work and knowing that you've you've

play27:29

built something for yourself and

play27:32

you've there's dignity in that it's just

play27:34

like whenever just when you're a kid and

play27:36

you brought your

play27:37

drawing home to Mom you made that for

play27:40

your mom right something you created you

play27:42

created it you're a crafter you did it

play27:44

right yeah and I think there's and I

play27:46

think there's a lot of value Yeah

play27:47

because sometimes people I like the way

play27:48

you phrase that you know because I do

play27:50

think sometimes people get hung up on

play27:51

money and it's not really about the

play27:53

money it's what they want to do with the

play27:54

money and for some people may just be

play27:56

the flexibility

play27:57

uh to to be with their to be with their

play28:01

kid they don't have a boss I mean I had

play28:03

I had a friend of mine he said I'm he

play28:06

sold this company he was pretty

play28:07

successful worked for somebody else and

play28:09

finally left that and he I said well why

play28:11

did you leave you you got this other job

play28:13

with the new company and he said he said

play28:15

I realized that was just a bad employee

play28:18

he couldn't take orders

play28:21

I'm the worst employee in the world he

play28:23

couldn't take orders and so I was he's

play28:25

doing fine we feel as he just wasn't

play28:28

going to be he couldn't take orders so I

play28:30

it felt obviously for him being being

play28:32

self-employed was an important part of

play28:34

him managing his own destiny that's

play28:38

right his identity is wrapped up in I am

play28:40

a self-made person and for a lot of us

play28:42

that's it right

play28:44

well that comes that brings us to the
