Transcripts
Hey, welcome back to the Airport to the Airport Design Challenge. This is Module number 4.
I hope you've had a lot of fun and success so far building Module
one with the paved surfaces, module 2 with the runway safety areas and fencing
module 3 with your lighting, marking, and signs,
your airport is hopefully starting to look like an airport. I know it was a lot of work,
you had to lay down all those blocks to make a runway. In Minecraft that
is quote a job, but you've powered through and I'm proud of you.
Well lets talk now about buildings. You know buildings, we see them all
over airports and there's all kinds of different buildings. And we're gonna talk a little bit about them.
So I'm joined again today by our panel of experts, Ms. Shannetta Griffin,
our Airport Boss is with us! And also Mr. Ignacio Flores,
from the Office of Airports. Welcome y'all, I'm glad to have you. Glad to be back.
Well lets dive right in. Lets talk a little bit about buildings on airports and lets
start, maybe both of you might want to take this question.
Does every airport have the same type of buildings?
It depends on the type of airport, right? So
most commercial service airports have similar buildings.
And you get to to airports that are not commercial service, the buildings
may vary. I know previously, in the other modules
there's been a lot on safety. I think now is when you can get creative and
so, have some innovative designs of different buildings, so
when you're out there, I'm sure you've seen some innovative designs on
control towers. Umm, some of the terminals that, the newer terminals
that you seen nowadays are pretty amazing. So this is where
you really get creative and move away from the standardization
that we are talking about in the other modules for safety reasons. So
you know, get creative, and again, the building themselves
around the airports, its gonna depend on the type of airport. And
and the need that they have in that community also, with regards to
what type of buildings are on, at that airport. Ah, okay.
You know, Rob, what's important about this, and I know last year when I saw the different
challengers and the designs that came, some of our students went to
commercial service airports and went to general aviation airports. So
as Ignacio mentioned, when you go to these commercial service, that's where you see then
terminals. That's where you may see office buildings, that's where you may see,
hangars. And when you go to general aviation, you might not necessarily
a terminal, but you'll see more types of buildings that
work with a fixed base operator, or those that are providing services, gasoline
to the airport or they can actually store their aircraft in the the hangar.
Umm, and then that's where you see more development that may happen, so you may
have businesses like Amazon of those that have their
actual buildings there where they can go in and have office meetings and those types of things.
And so, yeah, there are a lot of similar types of buildings at all of
the airports, umm, but again, depending on the type of airports that our designers
go for, then they'll see different types of buildings. And they'll be able to
have that level of creativity and innovation around what those buildings look like,
umm, and then what they're actually doing on those airports. So, its an
exciting time to be building out on airports. Yeah, very much so.
So you made me think of a question that I have seen come in from some of our students;
in speaking about all those different types of buildings and that question is,
what's the most expensive type of building that's on the airport?
Well you know, when you think about terminals, to me
the terminals seem to be the most expensive. And I think about the fact that
right now we're running some grant funding for terminals, and the cost
that we're seeing for those terminals are very important because they have so many different
types of spaces. You have concessions, you have bathrooms, you have
spaces for people to just sit and wait for their airplanes. So those are
are called hold room areas. And then you have multiple other types of things that happen
in that terminal, from security to the checkpoint areas, so
all of those faces take up a lot of, a lot of money actually.
And then the big piece that ties it all together is technology, so when we
can go and we can stream on our phones or we can pull down
the uh, internet on our phones, so that technology
also has a lot to do with it. And then our baggage system. So I think
really the terminal may be the most expensive, but Ignacio may have another
thought around that. I concur, I think the umm
terminal is probably the most expensive, but
one of the ones that are also pretty expensive, and more so from the perspective of
the equipment that's also inside is the ARFF buildings, the
aircraft rescue firefighting buildings that we have our there. Oh fire fighting! Okay.
So a lot of those buildings have some
additional equipment that's required, for example, to umm put
whether its foam on the vehicles or dry chemical
water. They also house our firefighters that
trains, so some of the training may be done in there. So some of the training may be done in there, they also have
emergency equipment to make sure they they're able to listen to
tower frequencies and also train on different uh,
areas of firefighting. So to me, that's another building
that is pretty costly, in the fact that
all of this equipment that's out there. It also has to provide housing for our firefighters
training, and all these different initiatives that are out there.
Wow, and that's uh, you talk about our fire fighters being
kind of our first responders. Hopefully we don't need them but they're positioned on
the airport so that they can get there quickly and render those services
you talked about. Now you talked about another building, Ignacio there, that talked about
that made me think about. You mentioned the air traffic control tower and the firefighters
that might be listening to that frequency. It made me think about, how tall are air traffic
control towers. You know what, it depends, and truly
depends, the main issue for an air traffic control tower
as far as it relates to the height, is you've got to have
full visibility for our air traffic controllers that are providing
clearances to the pilots. So they should be able to see all of the aircraft that
are moving in the movement area. So the height
is going to be determined on, where is it located,
with regards to, you have airports that maybe build
in areas that they have hills, uh so,
in some areas you potentially need a taller tower.
As opposed to places like my home state of Illinois,
where everything is pretty flat so there is no flexibility
there to put potentially a lower tower. So the main
thing, the main emphasis with regards to how tall the tower is,
the visibility, to make sure our air traffic controllers
have the ability to see all the aircraft on the airport
movement areas and then they provide that clearance when they're ready for
taxing. Wow, yeah, that really kind of brings home
another piece that I think of, when I think about that
Ignacio, and you talked about air traffic controllers, some of the runways that our
students are very familiar with now are over 10,000 feet long, so that's two
miles, right? To be able to see two miles, you have to be a fair ways up in the air
to be able to see that far, right? Then again, its all about safety.
So I have a question for the two of you, so I know in your daily jobs that
you all get to go out to a lot of airports all across the country and you get to see all kinds
of different things. I'm curious, what's the favorite kind of building for each
of you. When you go to an airport, what's your favorite kind of building to go to?
Well, air traffic control (laughs). One because of
the fact, just as Ignacio said, you can see out on the entire airfield.
You can see every activity that occurs on that airport.
Umm, so when you see planes taking off, you see them landing, you see the
air traffic controllers who are talking to multiple airplanes as they're
in the sky and as they're landing, uh, you can see that operation.
And so, total aspect of everything at the airport, so
when I go into that air traffic control towers and you have to walk up the last
set of stairs to get there, but when you get there, its the atmosphere
of everything, its like you are in control of that airport.
And I think one of our designers last year did that, where they set an air traffic
control tower and they talked about what they say. And I that that is so
important, one so you can just really understand everything that is going on
with the airport. So you see the aircraft, your see people, you see umm
cars and trucks. Everything is operational
from that air traffic control tower. Yeah, well I gotta tell you, I'm a little
bias, with my background in air traffic I share that perspective with you, but you might think
differently Ignacio, what's your favorite building. You know what, you would have probably
guessed it based on my previous answer, and my favorite is the aircraft
rescue firefighting building. I just love going in there
and looking at all the new fire trucks that are out there, uh
looking at all the equipment that firefighters use for training,
their fire fighting suits, just the training facilities, just
looking at all the tools that they use to hopefully never have to
save anyone. But they're always training, they're always ready
and prepared to go to any of the emergencies
happen on the airfield. So to me, I just find it fascinating and I love going
there, I love going there visiting the professional firefighters and just
talking to them about some of their training with regards to aircraft rescue
firefighting. You know I thought for sure you were gonna talk about, because their
housed there, they work 24 hours a day, right? And so
basically a lot of them live in those buildings, they have some of the best
food you'll ever find. So food in an airport firefighting
operation is amazing, I thought surely was where you were gonna go. Well,
that was my next... You just didn't want to say it, right (laughs). Well that's awesome
Well, students, you'll see that buildings on airports have all kinds of different
functions and as you model the airport that you've chosen, you may find
a firefighting facility, an air traffic control tower, a terminal
Maybe you're modeling a general aviation airport as Ms. Griffin described.
There is so many different buildings and as you look at each of them, hopefully now
you'll be able to look at those with a little bit different eye and see the function
of why that building's there, what it does, what function it serves
and why it's a vital part of the airport that you're modeling.
So I have that module number four is going really well for you. As we look
forward to module number 5, this is where we are gonna ask you to get really creative.
We talked about it in the intro to module one, if you remember
we're gonna ask you to be creative. And this is the part we want to learn from
you. We want to learn about your creativity. How can we
do things on airports in the future that maybe you think we don't do or maybe an
airport needs, we want to learn from you. So start thinking now about how you
can be creative and innovative as we move into the next module, all about
innovation. Remember, its all about safety, its all about innovation. We'll see
next time.
