or sweltering. I take cold showers, fastĀ twice a week, work with the homeless,Ā Ā
and spend hours at a time in complete silence.Ā In general, I go out of my way to make my lifeĀ Ā
uncomfortableā¦ and I am probably the happiest,Ā most fulfilled person you will ever meet.
Not despite these things. Because of them.
Our world is all about gettingĀ more. Itās about chasing and owningĀ Ā
and indulging whatever our desiresĀ dictate. The best life, weāre told,Ā Ā
is one with unlimited hookups with beautifulĀ people, cash to spend, popping bottles.
Even if weāre not trying to live like a rockstar,Ā Ā
what I think drives nearly everyone in ourĀ world is a need for safety, and comfort,Ā Ā
and predictabilityājust being able toĀ go on nice vacations with friends andĀ Ā
provide for our kids without worry. WeĀ want to be control to do what we want.
My question to you isā¦ howās that working out?
For the person indulging in every impulse, hasĀ that brought you happiness, like real happiness?
For the person living a comfortable suburbanĀ life, has owning the latest gadget, living in aĀ Ā
nice house, making decent moneyābroughtĀ your life meaning, like true meaning?
By the looks of our world, my guess is no. NeverĀ before have people been so unhappy. Year afterĀ Ā
year depression numbers skyrocket, anxiety is onĀ the rise. So many live in a malaise of boredom andĀ Ā
dissatisfaction, wondering how they got thereĀ and what they can do to feel something again.
I can say that I lived āin the worldā for quiteĀ a while. I enjoyed what it had to offer. I soughtĀ Ā
the thrills, I indulged in the immediateĀ gratifications. I didnāt try everythingĀ Ā
there was to try, but I had my fair share ofĀ pleasure and excess, of comfort and controlā¦
And it was always great while I was experiencingĀ it, donāt get me wrong. There are some fun thingsĀ Ā
in this world. If you want to feel good,Ā there is something for everyone out there.Ā Ā
But for how long? What I found is that the more IĀ indulged, the more I neededā¦ and the less I felt.
Until I left that life behind. UntilĀ I stopped trying to get more. Until IĀ Ā
decided to live a penitential lifeāletting go,Ā giving up, denying myself earthly pleasures,Ā Ā
to live a life that is grounded, disciplined,Ā hopeful, and most of all fulfilling.
I think one of the misconceptions of a lifeĀ like this is that weāre people who like pain,Ā Ā
that we do these difficult tasks as ends inĀ themselves because we hate joy, or somethingĀ Ā
like that. The reality is that everything we doĀ is a means to an end, a means of curtailing ourĀ Ā
desires, of controlling our impulses, of becomingĀ people who live like Jesus did and enjoy it.
The irony of our lives is that weĀ deny so many of earthās pleasuresĀ Ā
because what we really want is freedomāfreedomĀ to be in control of our own passions ratherĀ Ā
than always falling into temptation. Itās aboutĀ disciplining our minds, our hearts, our bodies,Ā Ā
and our attention spans so that we live the wayĀ we want rather than at the whims of the world.
At the heart of it all is the recognition thatĀ left to our own devices, we are prone to sin,Ā Ā
prone to deny God, and we donāt wantĀ that. We want to direct every aspectĀ Ā
of our lives to the source of life, Jesus Christ.
Which means that we pray. And notĀ just a quick prayer before bed orĀ Ā
the occasional plea in times of need. FiveĀ times a day, no matter the circumstances,Ā Ā
we take a brief moment to stop whateverĀ weāre doing and pray a section of theĀ Ā
psalms. Either together or in private, weĀ ground ourselves in the presence of God,Ā Ā
reminding us, even for just a moment, that weĀ can put the world on hold to be with Jesus.
In addition to this, silent meditation isĀ a must. Some pray for blocks of 15 minutes,Ā Ā
others for a half hourā¦ I prefer the holyĀ hourāan entire hour of silence. Turn offĀ Ā
the phone, cut off the distractions,Ā let everything else go.. and just be.
Sometimes I read spiritual books and meditateĀ on my life. Sometimes I have a conversationĀ Ā
with God. Sometimes I sit in silence and let GodĀ embrace me, telling me itās going to be okay.
Much of the time it is a beautiful break in theĀ day, a time to relax and unwind, but sometimesĀ Ā
itās work. Sometimes I have a billion other thingsĀ to do and the last thing I want to do is ādoĀ Ā
nothing.ā But of course, itās not nothing.Ā Itās the most something thing I could do,Ā Ā
a connection with the source of life himself, theĀ one who tells me who I am and where I should go.
Without this time, dedicated as a priority,Ā everything else falls apart. How quickly myĀ Ā
life becomes about me, when whatĀ I really want is to be about him.
Which is very easy to say, muchĀ harder to do. As our scriptures say,Ā Ā
āThe spirit is willing but the flesh is weak,āĀ and I know that my flesh is weak. As much as IĀ Ā
say that I want to do only what is good, my bodyĀ still calls out for things that do not fulfill.
Iām talking unhealthy foods, yes, but IāmĀ also talking lust, drunkenness, laziness,Ā Ā
self-indulgence of every kind. It doesnātĀ matter if youāve been a friar for 13 years,Ā Ā
those passions are alive in us.
And so, I try to curb those passions.Ā I put limits on my body. I whip itĀ Ā
into shape to strengthen my will and toĀ remind me that I can resist temptation.
A big part of this is fasting. Twice a weekĀ I go meatless and eat sparse mealsāenough toĀ Ā
be sustained but nothing else. No snacks, noĀ desserts, often just a peanut butter sandwichĀ Ā
for lunch and simple dinner. I also try,Ā on those days, to limit screen time to onlyĀ Ā
essential things and cut out all mediaāTV,Ā music, moviesāenter the silence a bit more.
Cold showers are one of those things thatĀ really arenāt that bad, weāre just addictedĀ Ā
to having supreme comfort in every instant. TheĀ same with this brown robe, called a habit, andĀ Ā
these sandals. Theyāre uncomfortable, they take aĀ bit getting used to, but youāre going to be okay.
And the money? You really donāt need that much.Ā The moment I realized that I would never haveĀ Ā
the latest phone, the ability to go out wheneverĀ I wanted, was the moment I realized how littleĀ Ā
those things actually bring happiness. What aĀ freedom it is to be content with what you have.
What do these two things getĀ you? Where does humility andĀ Ā
self-mastery lead? One would hopeĀ to a life of goodness in the world.
Free from the grips of lust, I canĀ enter into relationships withoutĀ Ā
worry of sexual tension or objectification.
Without a need to be in control, I can serve atĀ the will of others and make friends with anyone.
No longer driven by ambition, I can spendĀ my whole day with a homeless person,Ā Ā
a student struggling with self-esteem, an elderlyĀ lady whoās just lonely, and not feel that my dayĀ Ā
has been wasted. This is what the Lord asked of meĀ today, and so this is what I am able to provide.
Does this mean that Iām perfect now, that IĀ never give into temptation? Of course not.Ā Ā
The reason I do them is precisely becauseĀ I am still a sinner in need of conversion.
Do I rigorously follow each ofĀ these things without any breaks?Ā Ā
Hardly. During Easter and Christmas,Ā times of celebration, I never fast;Ā Ā
once a week I get a day off from work, and IāllĀ often have a beer or two and have some fun;Ā Ā
the showers donāt have to be ice cold in theĀ winter, just enough to create discomfort,Ā Ā
and I take a vacation each year. EvenĀ the ascetic life needs moderation.
Because, again, the purpose is not to cause painĀ or to master acts of self-denial in themselves,Ā Ā
it is to facilitate conversion to God.Ā What I want more than anything elseā¦ isĀ Ā
for my life is to be so dedicated toĀ the will of God that what I WANT isĀ Ā
to be of service. What I WANT is toĀ help others. What I WANT is to makeĀ Ā
sacrifices so that the world may beĀ a better place for the people I meet.
As St. Francis of Assisi said in regardsĀ to his own conversion and life of penance,Ā Ā
āWhat was bitter has become sweet.ā When he was inĀ the world, there was much that he hated, much thatĀ Ā
revolted him. But now, having found the disciplineĀ of the Gospel, those very things brought him joy.
This is what I think a penitentialĀ life could offer you. At first,Ā Ā
things like prayer, fasting,Ā and service may seem boring,Ā Ā
even dreadful. You turn from them because theyĀ provide no joy. Like someone eating broccoliĀ Ā
for the first time after eating nothingĀ candy, there is no appeal to it at all.
But thatās not because these things are badā¦Ā itās because youāve become so accustomed toĀ Ā
the sugar of the world that you donāt even knowĀ what will bring you real goodness. With practice,Ā Ā
with discipline, with a whole lot of self-denialĀ and building new habits, you will ultimately findĀ Ā
that these things bring you joy, and that thereĀ is no joy in the world that will ever match them.
So where do you start? Should you sell all yourĀ things and become a friar? Maybe. But maybe startĀ Ā
small. Maybe begin by finding one thing in eachĀ of these categories and building from there.
Can you dedicate 15 minutes each day toĀ uninterrupted meditation? Maybe chooseĀ Ā
one day a week that you deny yourself aĀ pleasure youāre used to. Find a place toĀ Ā
volunteer your time or donate your moneyĀ that takes you out of your comfort zone.
Do something, anything, that isnāt about gettingĀ more, but is about letting go. Of your comfort,Ā Ā
your will, your control, your need to beĀ always be seeking the next pleasure. Do this,Ā Ā
and then add to it, and add to it, andĀ add to it, until you find that your lifeĀ Ā
is less about you and more about Godā¦ andĀ trust me: your life wonāt be stuck anymore.
