Transcripts

play00:00

procrastination the single biggest

play00:02

threat to living an extraordinary life

play00:05

the action of delaying or postponing

play00:07

something in fact according to pierce

play00:09

steele author of the procrastination

play00:11

equation about 95 of people admit to

play00:14

procrastinating and i reckon the other

play00:16

five percent are lying you see it's

play00:18

something that virtually all of us

play00:19

suffer from when you know you have to

play00:21

write an assignment but you turn on

play00:23

netflix instead and you repeatedly keep

play00:25

putting it off until the night before

play00:26

it's due and it's only then with the

play00:28

deadline looming the next day you muster

play00:31

up just enough motivation to start

play00:33

writing and this was pretty much my

play00:35

entire life from as young as i can

play00:36

remember up until i was about 20 years

play00:38

old i was the world's worst

play00:40

procrastinator every time i needed to

play00:42

sit down to study there was just a

play00:44

hundred other things that i'd rather be

play00:45

doing and if i got so far as to sit down

play00:47

at my desk and open up my textbooks i

play00:49

usually just couldn't focus for any more

play00:51

than 15 minutes at a time however about

play00:54

seven years ago i finally overcame my

play00:56

procrastination problem i implemented a

play00:58

handful of strategies that

play01:00

systematically every single day for

play01:02

about a year chipped away at my

play01:04

procrastination and i went from getting

play01:06

degraded at school to getting a grade

play01:08

simply because i taught myself how to

play01:10

strategically overcome procrastination

play01:12

and so those systematic strategies that

play01:14

i implemented had such a powerful effect

play01:17

on me i'm gonna go through them step by

play01:18

step very shortly but first i think it's

play01:20

really important to understand why

play01:22

procrastination is so destructive

play01:24

because for me most of my life

play01:26

procrastination was a problem but i

play01:28

didn't really see it as a problem

play01:30

therefore i didn't really do anything to

play01:32

fix it so as a direct result of my

play01:34

procrastination i achieved pretty

play01:36

average grades and that's been generous

play01:39

but so what right the very definition of

play01:42

average means that most other students

play01:44

were getting roughly the same grades as

play01:46

me so it wasn't really a problem until

play01:49

it was you see i completed my final

play01:51

exams at high school and so i applied to

play01:53

five universities a couple of weeks

play01:55

later i received a letter in the post

play01:57

with the decision of those five

play01:58

universities but four out of five of

play02:00

them rejected me and the university that

play02:02

did accept me honestly i just used them

play02:05

to fill up the fifth slot because we had

play02:06

to apply for at least five and right

play02:08

there it hit me like a ton of bricks

play02:10

just an overwhelming feeling of

play02:12

disappointment and depression suddenly i

play02:14

realized that my last nine years of

play02:15

studying had come down to this to

play02:17

rejection and that leads me onto my

play02:19

first and in my opinion the most

play02:21

powerful way to overcome procrastination

play02:23

use your failures as rocket fuel i

play02:26

didn't realize that this at the time but

play02:28

that sinking feeling in my stomach from

play02:30

opening my university decision letter in

play02:31

the few months after that of really not

play02:33

knowing what to do with my life it was

play02:35

all a blessing i felt incredibly

play02:37

defeated i guess so i used that feeling

play02:40

to muster up enough motivation to never

play02:42

allow myself to fall into that situation

play02:44

again i made a conscious decision to

play02:46

start taking massive action in my life

play02:48

to avoid living a life of disappointment

play02:50

so that one setback that one failure it

play02:53

generated so much motivation within me

play02:56

that i started this very youtube channel

play02:58

about four and a half years ago i just

play02:59

wanted to help as many other people in

play03:02

the same situation as me and so that's

play03:04

when i created my first ever youtube

play03:06

video titled don't even think about

play03:07

procrastinating it took me three weeks

play03:10

to edit that three minute video because

play03:12

i'd never done any kind of video editing

play03:14

before and it's weird to think that if i

play03:15

didn't have that one setback this

play03:17

youtube channel probably wouldn't have

play03:19

been created so the second strategy that

play03:21

i implemented to overcome my

play03:23

procrastination addiction was that i

play03:24

took concrete steps to boost my

play03:27

self-confidence and self-esteem and i

play03:28

didn't really understand this before but

play03:31

our beliefs and what we think about

play03:33

ourselves are a huge determining factor

play03:35

on how prone we are to procrastination

play03:37

and pierce steele author of the

play03:39

procrastination equation explains it

play03:41

perfectly he wrote beliefs are powerful

play03:43

because they form or directly affect

play03:45

expectancy as you become less optimistic

play03:48

or less confident in your ability to

play03:49

achieve your motivation also ebbs the

play03:52

more uncertain you are of success the

play03:54

harder it is to keep focused so the

play03:56

lower your self-confidence the lower

play03:58

your motivation is likely to be

play03:59

therefore the more you'll be prone to

play04:01

procrastination and that's exactly what

play04:03

i experienced for most of my life i had

play04:05

a huge procrastination problem because i

play04:07

didn't believe i was capable of really

play04:09

achieving anything worthwhile so what

play04:11

was the point what's the point on

play04:12

studying for a grades if i didn't

play04:14

believe i was even capable of achieving

play04:16

them right it would be a waste of time

play04:18

or at least that's where my mindset was

play04:20

at the time poor self-perception then

play04:21

becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy by

play04:23

expecting to fail we make failure a

play04:25

certainty because we never dig in and

play04:27

make an intensive effort so what i did

play04:29

to counteract that was i surrounded

play04:31

myself with greatness the people that

play04:33

inspired me the all-time great warren

play04:35

buffett will smith michael jordan the

play04:37

kind of legends in their industry i

play04:39

started to read their books i started to

play04:41

listen to their interviews to watch

play04:42

documentaries i would consume as much

play04:44

content as i possibly could from the

play04:46

greatest people on the planet and over

play04:48

the period of several months my own

play04:50

self-belief started to rise gradually

play04:53

because i thought if those people can

play04:54

achieve phenomenal worldwide success

play04:56

then surely i can get an a on my next

play04:59

exam right or i can edit this short

play05:01

three-minute video for youtube or i can

play05:02

start going to the gym and get a little

play05:04

bit healthier and so i just started

play05:06

doing stuff and i put myself out there

play05:08

and i did things that i wouldn't have

play05:09

even dreamed of just a few months

play05:11

earlier but it was paying off my grades

play05:13

started to increase people began to

play05:15

watch my youtube videos i slowly became

play05:17

stronger and fitter and all these

play05:19

successes just kept on fueling my

play05:21

motivation and there was a very strong

play05:23

negative correlation between my

play05:25

motivation and procrastination so as my

play05:27

motivation increased my procrastination

play05:29

decreased to the point where i could go

play05:31

throughout my entire day without

play05:33

procrastinating at all there is one

play05:35

thing though that i learned very quickly

play05:37

and that was that i needed to obey the

play05:38

law of forced efficiency the law of fast

play05:41

efficiency states that there is never

play05:42

enough time to do everything but there's

play05:44

always enough time to do the most

play05:46

important thing and this is incredibly

play05:48

important to understand when it comes to

play05:50

procrastination so one of the most

play05:52

powerful strategies that i've

play05:53

implemented this year when it comes to

play05:55

being productive is that instead of

play05:56

having a massive long daily to-do list i

play05:59

just have a weekly schedule with the

play06:01

most important task anywhere from one

play06:03

task a day to four tasks a day so

play06:05

whatever happens that day as long as i

play06:07

complete those tasks then it's been a

play06:10

pretty good day because i think the

play06:11

average person today is just far too

play06:14

busy where they're overwhelming

play06:15

themselves with tasks that just aren't

play06:17

that important and the job

play06:19

responsibilities just keep piling up the

play06:21

ideal scenario of getting caught up on

play06:23

your projects is just not realistic a

play06:25

more achievable goal is to stay on top

play06:27

of your most critical tasks because the

play06:29

busier you get the more overwhelmed you

play06:32

become and the easier procrastination

play06:34

can then creep in because

play06:35

procrastination is a very kind of slow

play06:38

moving enemy and an analogy that i think

play06:40

really illustrates the destructive

play06:42

nature of procrastination is eating junk

play06:44

food so if you go to mcdonald's and buy

play06:46

a big mac and fries once every month

play06:48

it's probably not going to cause much

play06:50

damage it's not particularly healthy but

play06:52

once a month there's no significant

play06:54

damage to your health however if you go

play06:56

to mcdonald's once a week every week

play06:59

okay that's when the health concerns

play07:00

might start to begin but then you become

play07:02

truly addicted and you start eating at

play07:04

mcdonald's four days a week for the

play07:06

duration of your lifetime then the

play07:08

health risks really start to rack up so

play07:10

you're now at significant risk of

play07:12

obesity of cancer suffering heart

play07:14

disease strokes diabetes depression all

play07:16

of these illnesses that can

play07:18

significantly decrease the quality of

play07:20

your life in the same way if you

play07:22

procrastinate every now and then then

play07:23

it's probably not going to be a problem

play07:25

but if your procrastination becomes a

play07:27

habitual addiction like it was with me

play07:29

then you can easily find yourself

play07:31

incredibly unhappy as charlotte liberman

play07:33

wrote in the new york times over time

play07:35

chronic procrastination has not only

play07:37

productivity costs but measurably

play07:39

destructive effects on our mental and

play07:41

physical health including chronic stress

play07:44

general psychological distress and low

play07:46

life satisfaction symptoms of depression

play07:48

and anxiety poor health behaviors

play07:50

chronic illness and even hypertension

play07:52

and cardiovascular disease so a couple

play07:55

of months ago i created a poll in the

play07:56

community tab section of this channel

play07:58

asking what is the biggest obstacle you

play08:00

face as a student and a staggering 76

play08:03

percent of you said that procrastination

play08:06

was your biggest obstacle and i can say

play08:08

pretty confidently that virtually every

play08:10

single person watching this video right

play08:12

now is struggling in some form or

play08:14

another with procrastination so to help

play08:16

you out i made two videos for you the

play08:18

first one how i beat procrastination the

play08:20

easy way where i go through a few more

play08:22

strategies that implemented to overcome

play08:24

procrastination that i haven't mentioned

play08:26

in this video and if you're

play08:27

procrastinating right now by watching

play08:30

this then you should check out my video

play08:32

called stop wasting time on youtube so

play08:34

whichever video you choose i'll see you

play08:36

over there
