πŸ’‘Confidence

Confidence refers to a belief in one's own abilities, qualities, and judgment. In the context of the video, it is central to the theme as the lecturer discusses various strategies to build and strengthen personal confidence, particularly in relation to public speaking and life coaching. The script emphasizes the importance of confidence for success in all areas of life, providing examples such as preparing and practicing speeches to feel more assured and capable.

πŸ’‘Nervousness

Nervousness is a feeling of anxiety or apprehension, often in response to a stressful situation. The video script mentions the previous lecture's focus on nervousness, indicating that understanding and managing this emotion is a precursor to building confidence. The lecturer suggests that while dealing with nervousness is important, it is equally vital to cultivate confidence to overcome it.

πŸ’‘Mindset Coaching

Mindset coaching involves guiding individuals to adopt positive mental attitudes and beliefs that support their goals. The lecturer identifies as a certified life coach with a specialization in mindset coaching, indicating that this concept is integral to the video's message. The script discusses how mindset coaching can help individuals, especially students and public speakers, to fortify their self-belief and enhance their confidence.

πŸ’‘Preparation

Preparation is the act of making ready or setting things in order for use. The video script highlights the importance of proper preparation in building confidence, suggesting that knowing one's material thoroughly and being well-organized can significantly boost a person's self-assurance. The lecturer uses the metaphor 'dotting your i's and crossing your t's' to illustrate the thoroughness required in preparation.

πŸ’‘Practice

Practice is the action of performing an activity or set of activities repeatedly to improve or maintain one's skill. The script emphasizes the value of practice in achieving a state of readiness and confidence. The lecturer refutes the notion that 'practice makes perfect,' but asserts that it makes one feel prepared, which in turn fosters confidence.

πŸ’‘Positive Self-Talk

Positive self-talk is the habit of speaking to oneself in an encouraging and affirming manner. The video script discusses the impact of internal dialogue on one's confidence levels. It suggests that focusing on positive affirmations and avoiding negative self-criticism can help individuals to build a stronger belief in their capabilities, as illustrated by the story of the 'little engine who could.'

πŸ’‘Visualization

Visualization is the process of creating mental images or scenarios to achieve a desired outcome. The lecturer in the script recommends visualization as a technique to build confidence, advising the audience to close their eyes and imagine themselves being successful. This concept is used to illustrate how mental rehearsal can reinforce confidence and positive expectations.

πŸ’‘Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that individuals repeat to themselves to overcome self-doubt and cultivate a positive mindset. The video script mentions the use of affirmations as a tool for boosting confidence, suggesting that simple phrases like 'I can do all things' can help individuals to reprogram their thoughts and enhance their belief in their abilities.

πŸ’‘The Biggest Loser

The Biggest Loser is a reality TV show mentioned in the script as an example to illustrate the consequences of negative self-belief. The lecturer recounts a story from the show where a contestant's focus on her perceived inability to succeed led to her failure and injury. This example underscores the video's theme that focusing on the possibility of success is crucial for building confidence.

πŸ’‘Note Cards

Note cards are small pieces of paper used to record key points or prompts for reference during a speech or presentation. The script suggests that the use of note cards can alleviate the fear associated with memorization, allowing the speaker to focus on delivering the content confidently. This concept is tied to the video's theme of building confidence by reducing reliance on memory and increasing preparedness.

πŸ’‘Conversation

In the context of the video, a conversation is presented as a less intimidating alternative to public speaking. The script advises envisioning a speaking opportunity as a conversation to reduce anxiety and build confidence. Transcripts

play00:04

hello everyone this is lecture 10.

play00:08

welcome to lecture 10. and this lecture

play00:11

we're going to be talking about how to

play00:13

build your confidence now in our last

play00:15

lecture lecture nine we talked about

play00:17

nervousness and

play00:20

why nervousness is and some of the ways

play00:23

that you can deal with it but it's not

play00:25

enough just to know how to deal with

play00:27

nervousness you also know how to have

play00:29

how to build your confidence how to

play00:32

strengthen and fortify your belief in

play00:36

yourself now some of this may sound a

play00:38

little bit woo-woo and that's okay I'm

play00:41

into woo-woo and maybe some of you are

play00:43

also but let me just tell you this in

play00:46

addition to

play00:47

being a college professor and having my

play00:50

my you know communication degrees I also

play00:53

am a certified life coach and in that

play00:57

confidence coaching and mindset coaching

play01:01

is part of the thing that I also do in

play01:03

that Realm

play01:05

and I'll tell you the reason why

play01:08

I even thought about it I mean I've been

play01:10

thinking about it for years before was

play01:11

even such a big bad or I don't want to

play01:14

call it that before it was a trend okay

play01:16

we'll say Trend because that's a little

play01:17

bit more respectful before it was a

play01:19

trend to go into life coaching I've been

play01:22

coaching for decades in fact it was when

play01:25

I lived in San Diego in my 20s that I

play01:27

knew I wanted to be a life coach I don't

play01:29

even think that was the term

play01:32

for it then but that's something that I

play01:34

wanted to do and so during or right

play01:37

before the pandemic I started my

play01:39

training to become a life coach and I I

play01:42

was able to kind of focus or specialize

play01:44

in some areas so I chose confidence and

play01:46

mindset coaching and mindfulness the

play01:49

reason why

play01:51

is because I realized that in my role as

play01:54

a professor I was constantly in the

play01:57

position to encourage people and help

play01:59

build up their confidence in fact I

play02:02

think probably even more so than many

play02:04

other professors we all do I think but

play02:06

because it's speech and public speaking

play02:09

I had a very unique opportunity to build

play02:13

up confidence

play02:14

uh

play02:16

in a different kind of way than maybe

play02:19

the math professor or the science

play02:21

professor

play02:22

and so I think it was just a natural fit

play02:24

when I decided to become life coach

play02:27

certified that I also focused on

play02:29

confidence coaching as well so

play02:34

again some of this may sound a little

play02:36

bit woo-woo for some of you but just

play02:37

indulge me a little bit okay because the

play02:40

truth is is that being confident is so

play02:42

important to your success not just as a

play02:46

public speaker but in all areas of your

play02:47

life you have to be confident

play02:52

you guys are going to also just have to

play02:54

forgive me all these yawnings I have no

play02:56

idea

play02:57

I know that I'm not boring I know that

play03:00

I'm engaging and exciting and I know I

play03:02

have a great personality I know that I

play03:04

keep people's attention so I don't know

play03:06

why I always start this journey when

play03:09

it's time to do recording I don't yawn

play03:11

as much in real class so again I I don't

play03:14

know you guys

play03:15

so we're going to talk about building up

play03:17

our confidence

play03:19

and there are a few things that we can

play03:22

do in order to build confidence okay

play03:26

now

play03:30

as I mentioned previously preparing and

play03:33

practicing is at the top of the list

play03:36

you have to prepare properly

play03:43

excuse me that means that you have to

play03:45

have your stuff together

play03:47

okay and you guys know if we were

play03:49

friends you know I'd say that a

play03:51

different way right we have to have our

play03:52

stuff together that simply means that

play03:54

you have to do your due diligence as the

play03:57

speaker as the student preparing the

play03:59

speeches in this class but also Beyond

play04:01

class all this lateman and stuff 11th

play04:05

Hour stuff that does not align well with

play04:10

being prepared so you have to prepare

play04:13

that means you have to dodge your eyes

play04:15

cross your t's you have to know the

play04:18

information you have to feel confident

play04:20

in the information that you're providing

play04:23

confident in your knowledge now don't

play04:25

get me wrong you're not going to be a

play04:27

subject matter expert

play04:29

um over a topic after three days of

play04:32

research

play04:36

excuse me

play04:38

however after three days of research and

play04:41

three days of preparation and preparing

play04:43

and practicing you should be able to

play04:45

deliver the information that you found

play04:48

the information that you have

play04:52

brought together you should be able to

play04:54

deliver that confidence right as an

play04:57

expert if you will okay and so

play05:00

practicing after we've prepared we

play05:02

practice practice practice practice they

play05:05

say practice makes perfect

play05:07

I don't believe in that concept I don't

play05:09

believe in the practice makes perfect

play05:10

concept

play05:12

but I do believe that practice makes you

play05:14

feel prepared and the more practice you

play05:16

do the more prepared you feel and the

play05:18

more prepared you feel the better you

play05:20

feel and the more confident you are see

play05:22

it's a natural confidence booster so

play05:24

prepare and practice

play05:26

okay in addition to that and this is

play05:28

where the rule is going to come in you

play05:30

have to mind your thoughts and your

play05:32

beliefs

play05:36

mind your thoughts and your beliefs

play05:39

what you think about yourself

play05:42

what you think about your capabilities

play05:44

what you think about your strengths your

play05:47

weaknesses how you think about them and

play05:49

then in turn how you speak about them

play05:52

matter greatly

play05:55

they make a difference

play05:57

okay

play05:58

you cannot speak negatively about

play06:01

yourself and then somehow expect to do

play06:05

well it just doesn't work like that

play06:09

it just doesn't work like that so

play06:13

what are the internal thoughts that

play06:15

you're having what are the stories that

play06:17

you're telling yourself remember that I

play06:20

said a few lectures ago you never let

play06:22

them see what I think it's a nervous and

play06:24

selection never let them see you sweat

play06:26

you never admit to being nervous you

play06:28

don't stand there until your audience

play06:29

I'm nervous I'm nervous you never do

play06:31

that right that's not your job your job

play06:34

is to speak up

play06:40

positively for yourself about yourself I

play06:44

can do this

play06:45

remember that story of the little engine

play06:47

who could

play06:49

I may be dating myself and some of you

play06:51

may be too young to have heard that but

play06:53

I promise if you just Google it the

play06:56

little engine who could and his his

play06:58

famous line was I think I can I think I

play07:01

can I think I can I think I can well

play07:04

listen as cliche as it may sound and as

play07:07

wool as you may think it to be that

play07:10

works

play07:11

the more you tell yourself you can do it

play07:14

the more you begin to believe it and it

play07:17

takes hold in the inside of you

play07:19

conversely the more that you tell

play07:22

yourself I can't do it I never could do

play07:24

this I can't do it I'll never do good

play07:25

I'm gonna fail I'm gonna mess up

play07:28

you're going to do that as well

play07:31

we get what we think about

play07:34

what we focus on expand yeah there's

play07:38

somewhere we will but it's true you guys

play07:40

what we focus on expands the more that

play07:43

you think about how angry you are the

play07:45

more angrier you get

play07:47

the more you think about them but just

play07:49

let it go but just let that go and the

play07:51

more you realize that you begin to do

play07:53

what begin to Let It Go

play07:55

and so it is not it cannot be said

play07:59

enough that you have to mind your

play08:01

thoughts so some things that you can do

play08:04

of course you want to have

play08:07

quiet time whatever that means to you

play08:09

for some people that may be meditation

play08:11

it might be chanting or prayer or what

play08:14

have you but you want to have that quiet

play08:16

time where you can reflect and you can

play08:19

visualize in your mind's eye

play08:22

yes close your eyes

play08:24

and visualize yourself being successful

play08:28

see yourself being successful

play08:31

uh recently I was watching I started

play08:34

watching Ugly Betty again I love that

play08:36

series when it was out years ago and

play08:38

some of you maybe before your time just

play08:40

Google it go Ugly Betty and

play08:44

when Betty gets to the office

play08:47

or I think it's to do the interview or

play08:49

maybe it's the first day of work she

play08:51

says something like you're a beautiful

play08:52

confident businesswoman

play08:55

sometimes we have to tell ourselves

play08:57

those things you're a beautiful

play08:58

confident businesswoman you're a

play09:00

handsome confident businessman you're an

play09:03

excellent speaker you've got this you're

play09:04

a well-prepared speaker I've got this

play09:06

you sometimes have to literally talk

play09:09

yourself into it and I bet some of you

play09:12

who are athletes you know this and

play09:14

you've done this before you hype

play09:16

yourself up you give yourself a pep talk

play09:18

a pep speech yes this is important even

play09:21

when it comes to speech making you have

play09:23

to do it if you don't already have it

play09:24

you have to do this for yourself

play09:27

so you want to visualize yourself being

play09:29

successful you want to give yourself

play09:31

positive messages you may even have to

play09:33

say affirmations and um

play09:36

and that could be as simple as I can do

play09:39

all things I can do this I was made for

play09:41

this

play09:42

your affirmation you create it but again

play09:45

you have to do what helps you to get

play09:47

over the hump of fear the hump of

play09:49

negativity the hump of self-doubt I want

play09:52

to tell you a story again maybe before

play09:55

some of your times but you're gonna

play09:56

google it of course years ago there was

play09:59

a TV show called The Biggest Loser some

play10:01

of you may be familiar

play10:03

and I love watching The Biggest Loser I

play10:06

love competition well I shouldn't say

play10:08

that I don't like all competition shows

play10:09

I've never watched one episode of uh

play10:12

Survivor or big brother because I saw

play10:14

the previews and I didn't think it was

play10:16

for me but but the biggest loser I like

play10:18

that one and so I would watch it

play10:19

frequently and there was this one season

play10:22

where they were doing Pairs and all of

play10:24

the contestants were there paired up

play10:26

with a friend or family member spouse

play10:28

parents sibling you know whoever and

play10:31

they were there together to lose weight

play10:32

to support each other on this journey of

play10:34

losing weight and so this particular

play10:36

season

play10:38

there was uh this one team Maria and her

play10:42

son now I don't recall her son's name

play10:44

but I do recall the mom her name was

play10:46

Maria and they were originally from

play10:48

Chicago so of course you guys know I'm

play10:50

from Chicago so you know I honed in on

play10:53

that really quickly I was living in

play10:54

Houston at the time when this particular

play10:57

season was on so anyway Maria and her

play11:00

son they're they're doing this one

play11:02

challenge this one particular night okay

play11:04

and it involved

play11:07

them walking over

play11:11

um

play11:12

a pool

play11:14

on a plank if I recall

play11:16

but Maria was terrified and she was

play11:20

saying I'll never do this I'm not gonna

play11:22

make it I'm not gonna do this I'm not

play11:23

gonna make it she was so focused on her

play11:26

inability to get across that pool

play11:29

she was not focused on getting across

play11:31

the pool

play11:33

she was not focused on winning the

play11:34

challenge

play11:36

she was not focused on the strength that

play11:39

her body was gaining

play11:40

um through the weight that she was

play11:42

already losing she was not focused on

play11:45

how this would benefit her son she was

play11:47

not focused on how this would save them

play11:49

from elimination later on or what have

play11:51

you the only thing she could focus on is

play11:54

her belief that she could not get across

play11:58

that point

play12:00

it does not take a rocket scientist to

play12:03

know where I'm headed with this story

play12:06

Maria took a few steps out onto the

play12:08

plane

play12:09

and she was still chanting like I can't

play12:11

do it I can't do it I can't do it and

play12:13

then eventually

play12:16

you guessed it

play12:17

Maria fell right into that water

play12:20

and she actually hit her face her nose

play12:25

as she fell and then she I don't know

play12:28

remember she broke her nose I think she

play12:30

broke her nose but there was blood

play12:32

okay

play12:34

and this derailed their progress for the

play12:37

evening just set them back

play12:40

and it wasn't just her setting herself

play12:42

back because she did this it was the

play12:45

hope it was the team she and her son

play12:47

together as a team were Now set back

play12:51

because she chose to focus on her fear

play12:53

of being successful feared that she

play12:56

would not be successful than focusing on

play12:59

the possibility that she could be

play13:01

successful and then she could make it

play13:03

across the plank to the other side of

play13:06

the pool

play13:07

you guys

play13:08

you have to focus on the possibility of

play13:11

your success in order to be successful

play13:15

let me say that again because that is

play13:17

Google when it's good

play13:19

you have to focus on the possibility of

play13:22

your success in order to be successful

play13:26

actually I'm going to put that on a

play13:28

infographic and I'm gonna put that out

play13:30

on Facebook and Instagram today you have

play13:33

to focus on the possibility of your

play13:35

success

play13:36

in order to be successful

play13:38

okay

play13:42

all right so that's another way that you

play13:45

can build confidence okay

play13:47

and so then of course

play13:49

the book tells us to identify your

play13:51

negative self-talk right identify the

play13:53

negative things that you're saying and

play13:55

then you have to reprogram them into new

play13:57

scripts that are positive and that uh

play14:00

speak to your ability the possibility of

play14:02

your success

play14:03

okay also examine the beliefs that are

play14:06

underlying the negative thoughts have

play14:08

you already had a bad speech experience

play14:11

is that why you're feeling this way you

play14:14

already had a bad experience trying to

play14:16

give a speech and you forgot your lines

play14:17

you forgot what to say remember in this

play14:19

class you're going to be using note

play14:21

cards and I would suggest to you that

play14:23

almost every circumstance that you find

play14:24

yourself in you'll be able to use some

play14:27

kind of note cards or manuscripts it's

play14:29

very few things I think someone's going

play14:30

to call on you to memorize

play14:32

right world leaders use teleprompters

play14:36

talk show hosts they use teleprompters

play14:38

and cue cards you guys so I don't think

play14:40

they're going to be very many instances

play14:42

where you're going to need to speak from

play14:44

memory so if you are scared and you

play14:49

doubt yourself because of a previous

play14:50

example a previous opportunity or

play14:53

previous experience where you had to

play14:55

memorize at least for the purpose of

play14:57

this class put that out of your head

play14:59

because you won't be doing that number

play15:01

three replace negative self-talking

play15:03

beliefs with positive statements and

play15:05

mental images I've already told you

play15:09

visualize yourself being successful give

play15:13

yourself positive affirmations give

play15:15

yourself a new script hype yourself up

play15:18

one of the things that I do on the first

play15:20

day of class every semester is that I

play15:21

still have nerves in my in my stomach

play15:24

right butterflies on the first day of

play15:26

class

play15:26

and

play15:30

one of the things I do is that I listen

play15:31

to music to get myself together there

play15:33

are two songs I listen to and I've done

play15:34

this for almost 20 years

play15:36

almost 20 years I've done this one I

play15:39

either listen to one or both it's

play15:42

optimistic by Sounds of Blackness

play15:44

or and or it is The Good Life by Kanye

play15:49

West

play15:50

yes yes yes

play15:52

the lead singer of Sounds of Blackness

play15:54

is born and raised in Chicago before she

play15:56

went to Minneapolis and Kanye also is

play15:58

from Chicago yes you guys I work hard

play16:00

for my city

play16:01

but the truth is is that what I play the

play16:04

good life it reminds me that when I'm a

play16:07

professor I get up I get a chance to get

play16:09

up and do the work that I enjoy doing

play16:10

all the time everyone doesn't get a

play16:13

chance to get up and go to work that

play16:15

they love some people have the jobs that

play16:17

they have just so that they can take

play16:19

care of themselves and their families

play16:20

some of us like me get up and get to do

play16:23

the job that they really desire to do

play16:25

the good life

play16:27

and optimistic just simply I pray that

play16:30

play that so that I can remind myself to

play16:32

always have optimism always think about

play16:34

the positive even when things look like

play16:37

they are

play16:38

um

play16:39

here to destroy you just know and even

play16:42

the BS comes to serve you well it always

play16:45

does and so if that's if you see it like

play16:48

that then it's easier to always create a

play16:52

positive script that you're writing for

play16:55

and telling yourself

play16:56

right and of course continue practicing

play16:59

these steps until you feel confident

play17:01

about your speech so you're going to

play17:03

prepare properly you're going to

play17:04

practice practice practice and then

play17:06

you're going to write yourself a script

play17:08

that you're going to say you're going to

play17:10

do some kind of ritual some kind of

play17:12

music prayer

play17:14

um your favorite beverage or whatever

play17:15

you're going to do those things to help

play17:17

psych yourself up so that you can

play17:19

develop a level of confidence that will

play17:21

precede your success as a speech maker

play17:25

that is how you develop confidence and

play17:28

also

play17:29

something that your book also mentions I

play17:31

want to make sure I point out envision

play17:33

your speaking opportunity as a

play17:36

conversation if you think of it more as

play17:38

a conversation where you're speaking to

play17:41

others about this particular topic it

play17:43

tends to take some of the weight off and

play17:46

that in itself can help you to build

play17:48

your confidence most people are not

play17:50

scared to have conversation but many

play17:53

people are scared to give speech

play17:55

you see there many people are not scared

play17:58

to give to have conversation

play18:01

but many many many people are scared to

play18:05

give public speeches yes all right so

play18:09

these are the tips that I want to give

play18:12

you in order for you to build your

play18:15

confidence and I think that I'm going to

play18:18

be able to show you that video of Maria

play18:20

hold tight let's see if I can find it

play18:25

so I hope that you could hear all of

play18:28

that sometimes the audio messes up and

play18:30

I'm not sure so I am going to include

play18:33

the link in case anyone wanted to watch

play18:36

that episode or to re-watch that portion

play18:39

and I got it wrong I thought she

play18:41

actually fell into the water that's what

play18:43

I that's the way I remembered it but I

play18:45

guess that that isn't quite how it

play18:46

happened before she took that last step

play18:49

she actually fell on the deck but as you

play18:52

can see

play18:54

she had real concerns don't get me wrong

play18:57

she had real fears real concerns that

play18:59

were present with her long before she

play19:01

ever got into that competition right but

play19:04

so much of our success you guys hand is

play19:06

on what are we going to focus our

play19:09

Attention our energy or our attention on

play19:12

when we are faced with the challenge are

play19:14

we focusing that attention on the

play19:17

insurmountable impossible or are we

play19:20

focusing that attention on the possible

play19:23

that is not to make light of Maria's

play19:25

case or her situation but it is to say

play19:28

that we have to choose which part we're

play19:30

going to focus on because if we focus on

play19:33

the fear and if we focus on

play19:35

um what we believe is our inability to

play19:38

do the thing that thing gets greater and

play19:40

greater and that is what we have happen

play19:42

so I hope this has been a good lesson

play19:45

for you to remember that you are

play19:47

responsible for building your confidence

play19:49

and that you have steps you have tools

play19:52

at your disposal that you can use to

play19:55

build that confidence all right you guys

play19:57

this has been lecture 10. I'll see you

play20:00

again soon for lecture 11. bye
