Transcripts

play00:00

- Look, if you want to rank on Google you need backlinks.

play00:03

We all know this, it's hard, and that's why

play00:06

a lot of people pay for them,

play00:07

but you shouldn't pay for them.

play00:08

Paying for them is against Google's policy,

play00:10

it's a great way to get your site banned,

play00:12

it's short term, it's one of the silliest things you can do.

play00:15

So, if you don't pay for them how can you get them?

play00:18

Hi everyone, I'm Neil Patel and today

play00:20

I'm going to share with you how you can build backlinks

play00:23

without paying for them.

play00:25

(upbeat music)

play00:29

Before we get started, make sure

play00:31

you subscribe to this channel,

play00:32

and if you're on YouTube click the alert notification

play00:35

that way when I go live you'll get notified.

play00:38

So question, how do you build backlinks?

play00:40

Well, I'm guessing most of you don't build them at all,

play00:44

and I'm curious altogether, because there is

play00:47

a really simple way to do this.

play00:49

It does require hard work, I'm not going to tell you that

play00:52

you're just going to get these links in,

play00:53

wave a magic wand and do nothing,

play00:55

but if you're willing to do the work

play00:58

it's not hard to get these backlinks.

play01:00

And here's how you do it.

play01:02

Step one, I want you to head over to Backlinks,

play01:05

it's a free link building tool that I created for you.

play01:08

Go to neilpatel.com/backlinks,

play01:10

in the search bar put in your competitor URL,

play01:14

it'll show you all the people that link to your competitors.

play01:17

Within there I want you to search for

play01:20

the pages that they have that are the most popular.

play01:23

It'll show you that, you can see all the links,

play01:26

all the links that people are pointing to

play01:28

other than their home page.

play01:30

And through the Backlink's report you can also see that,

play01:33

you can see the backlink count for the whole domain,

play01:35

a specific URL, and when you find the right articles

play01:39

that a competition's going after,

play01:41

you want to look at the backlink count for that URL.

play01:44

Now, if you're struggling to find really good pages,

play01:47

another easy thing you can do is

play01:49

when you're already in the Backlink's report,

play01:51

in the side bar click on top pages,

play01:54

it'll show you the top pages that your

play01:55

competitors are writing on, look at the ones

play01:57

that are most similar to you and you can also

play01:59

click the backlinks button there,

play02:01

it'll show you every single person

play02:03

that's linking to that article.

play02:05

Second step, whatever that article is

play02:07

that your competitors wrote that's

play02:09

similar or related to your industry,

play02:11

I want you to write a better version of that article.

play02:14

You know, if it's 1,000 words

play02:16

I want you to make it 5,000 words.

play02:18

Yes, I know that sounds crazy,

play02:20

requires a lot of work, but go in depth.

play02:22

And I'm not talking about just shoving in key words

play02:24

and making it long for the sake of it.

play02:27

I'm talking about great amazing content.

play02:30

If I told you to write a article on how to make pizzas,

play02:33

you would just write a article

play02:34

and you probably would discuss

play02:36

here's how you make dough, you put it in the oven,

play02:39

here's a temperature, you put toppings,

play02:41

bada boom bada bing you're done, you got pizza.

play02:44

Well, when I'm saying write amazing content,

play02:47

I want you to do things like talk about,

play02:50

if you're going to write on how to make pizza,

play02:53

break down everything to, how do you pick the vegetables.

play02:56

Organic versus ones with pesticides.

play02:58

Do you need to drain out the water

play02:59

from the vegetables when you're cutting them up?

play03:01

What's the right length to cut your cucumbers?

play03:04

All the way to, how the water quality

play03:07

changes the taste of your dough.

play03:09

Do you use bottled water?

play03:10

Do you use tap water?

play03:12

All those things matter from, hey you put the dough,

play03:15

you make it first, you put it in the oven

play03:18

that is preheated to a certain temperature,

play03:20

once it's cooked you break it out,

play03:22

you put marinara sauce that you handmade

play03:24

and this is how you do it step by step

play03:25

and even picked the tomatoes from the local market.

play03:28

And then how do you put your toppings?

play03:30

How do you cut it?

play03:31

What kind of fork and knife do you use to cut a pizza?

play03:33

You use that circular roller thing?

play03:35

I don't know how to cook because I'm not a cook,

play03:37

but you get the point.

play03:39

If that's how you make a pizza I just want super in depth,

play03:42

and I would try to go even more in depth than that.

play03:44

And when go that in depth, you'll also find

play03:48

that hey, your article is so thorough

play03:50

that when someone reads it they're going to get

play03:53

better instructions on how to build that pizza.

play03:55

I would also include GIFs, animated with images

play03:58

showing like the process of making the dough

play04:00

and spreading it out and tossing it in the air

play04:03

and then catching it and then my wife

play04:05

getting mad at me for making a mess in the kitchen.

play04:08

Again, I don't cook but I would be a

play04:09

fun experiment, why not try it out?

play04:12

So, you would do all these things,

play04:14

and making it super detailed is

play04:17

how you create better content than other people.

play04:19

Whether it's images, videos that you

play04:21

also want to add to your articles.

play04:23

Whether it's having a custom designer

play04:24

go in there and create graphics for you, all that adds up.

play04:28

You want your content to be better.

play04:30

This is the most important part in this step.

play04:32

It's not using my Backlinks tool, you can use

play04:34

anyone else's tool if you want, mine's just free.

play04:36

It's nothing else.

play04:38

This step, the second one, is the most important.

play04:41

Now, the last step you need to take,

play04:43

you need to email out everyone linking to your competition

play04:46

and break down why your article's better.

play04:49

But the real key is to do custom emails.

play04:52

So for example, if someone links to my article

play04:55

on how to get content, or if someone links

play04:57

to a competitors article on how to get ranked on

play05:01

Google faster, or how to get new content index faster,

play05:04

you know, I may end up emailing them

play05:06

telling them hey look, that content's talking about how

play05:09

you go and you submit your article to search console,

play05:12

and I would break down and be like,

play05:13

hey I know you use to link to us but that doesn't guarantee

play05:15

that your article gets indexed,

play05:17

Google still picks what you want.

play05:18

Here's three other things that I break down

play05:20

that helps people get a index.

play05:23

And these three things are really easy,

play05:25

they can do that in two minutes.

play05:26

This other thing takes seven minutes

play05:28

but combined they're going to get a much better success ratio.

play05:31

And when you create that detailed email

play05:33

and then you're like look, if you want them to,

play05:36

if you want to provide more value to your users

play05:38

feel free to check out the article.

play05:39

If you enjoy it, I would really appreciate it

play05:40

if you also linked to it.

play05:42

That kind of stuff is more effective,

play05:43

takes more time, but it works.

play05:46

That's how you build links without paying for it.

play05:48

Most of it is manual labor on your end,

play05:50

and that's why a lot of people don't have links.

play05:52

It's because they don't want to take the time

play05:54

to build all those links, it's just so time consuming.

play05:57

With you, if you're willing to do that,

play06:00

you'll outpace your competition,

play06:02

rank higher, and gobble up their traffic.

play06:05

It's a better approach, it's a long term approach,

play06:08

don't get caught in shady gray hat tactics.
