free Jared poen fronos
photo.com and this is a review of the
vro 35mm
f1.8 lens now they make this lens both
for for the Nikon Z Mount as well as
Sony's e-mount I tested it out on the
Nikon Z mount for this version now this
is the first time that I'm talking about
a vro lens now I consider these to be
fourth-party type lenses whereas Sigma
and Tamron and tokina that have been
around much longer making thirdparty
glass I consider those third party and
this no three and a half to Fourth party
because it's part of the newer line of
lenses that are coming out of China that
I'm finally giving a chance and the
reason I'm giving them a shot and giving
them a chance is because they're less
expensive they autofocus on the
mirrorless cameras and it helps people
get a faster piece of glass meaning an
f1.8 much sooner than the more expensive
versions that Nikon and Tamron and sigma
and Sony and the other people are
putting out so that's why I'm reviewing
this lens but what did I shoot with it
to test it out well I took it to a
professional bowling event which is a
lower light situation where I have all
access to get around and shoot the
bowlers because I can get up close and
personal which is great and also went
out to the Harlem Globe trods game where
if you've never been to a globe trods
game look them up they play all around
the world you should definitely go to a
globe trer game it's a good test in that
situation to see how the autofocus works
and how's the depth of field now this is
a full-frame lens so it is 35 mm on a
full-frame body but if you do have a
crop sensor body you're going to get the
equivalent of 52 1/2 mm which isn't bad
at all if you want to get a faster piece
of glass meaning a 1.8 verse one of
those variable aperture kit lenses that
you might be using when you first get
your camera now let's take a look at the
outside of the lens the first thing you
feel and notice is that it's not that
crappy you would think that these China
made lenses would feel like plastic and
not feel comparable to a Nikon or a Sony
lens but right off the bat it looks good
it feels good in the hands and it feels
like it's pretty well made now it's hard
to determine without having one of these
things for six years at this point how
it's going to hold up longevity wise but
from the feel of it it seems like it's
built pretty well so there's not much
going on on the outside of the lens you
do have an aperture ring that does lock
in you can use it manually or you could
lock it in on a and it's going to take a
little bit of pressure to get it off of
the a ooh I'm listening to that clip I'm
wondering if that's something that might
break with more usage I personally don't
use this at all I control the aperture
from the camera itself never from the
lens now this is a 55 mm filter thread
uh I do not recommend putting filters on
camera on any lenses the the clear
filters if you want to get into other
types of creative filters that's a
different story but you don't need to
put a piece of glass in front of this
piece of glass especially because this
thing is pretty inexpensive you don't
need to put anything in front of it I
don't shoot with filters on my lenses
but other than that you have this orange
badge on the side and that's it for the
outside of the lens you got your lens
Hood now that thing feels plastic that's
how you put your lens hood on when
you're not using it you just flip it
around bayonet style and you clip it on
like that lens cap easy to get on nice
squeezy there nice and easy now it
weighs in at 13.1 Oz 370 G not bad at
all you've got nine aperture blades for
anybody that cares about those most of
the time uh the more blades gives you a
rounder bokeh or out of focus area in
the back in this type of lens it's
really not going to matter how many
blades you have now speaking of those
aperture blades this is what you're
looking for as I zoom in on this photo
of Kyle troop who's reading a book
during a tournament let's look at the
background look at those people out of
focus they're gone that's what you get
from shooting wide open at f1.8 so I use
this lens to shoot wide open the entire
time because if it can hit at 1.8 it's
going to be able to hit at 2.8 or four
or 56 or wherever you need to go but
what I'm looking for when when looking
at a lens I zoom in on his face and I'm
like yeah that's sharp that's what I'm
looking for right like if it can't hit
Focus then I wouldn't recommend it but
in this case it found Focus he's sitting
there it used the iaf it looks good I'm
able to process it to the colors and
make it look fine and I'm not sitting
here going man I wish I was using a
different Nikon or Sony lens uh Native
brand because this just worked and
that's what I care about can it work can
it get the images now since I'm talking
about Focus the autofocus let's jump out
to the Harlem Globe triers where a guy
is jumping up to slam dunk a ball during
warm-ups I'm just sitting there on the
Baseline just seeing how does the
tracking work is it the best autofocus
tracking I've ever seen does it hit
every single time and the answer no it
doesn't hit every time but in the shots
that I was shooting I got what I needed
and wasn't like yeah I I'm upset I
missed everything now what I can say is
I've used vro lenses on both the Nikon
as well as the Sony system and I do find
that they focus differently on both
Nikon I didn't feel was as good focusing
as on the Sony and and that's more
because there's differences between how
these lenses talk to the cameras and how
these lens manufacturers are building
the algorithms from scratch to try and
autofocus uh on both of the systems so I
just felt like the Sony felt like it was
more accurate time and time again versus
the Nikon but I still got very good
results on the Nikon that I'm happy with
let me jump in here real quick because I
want to show you our custom Lightroom
presets from fro Pack 4 in action on
this photo right here starting with blue
Clues followed by Brooklyn c41 copper
tone High sea Kaleidoscope saltwater
taffy thick and wet Hot American Summer

of these masks for you that you don't
have to do anything so let's click on

lower the amount so you can see before

way you want so look if you want to
speed up your raw workflow give yourself
a great starting point or you're just
tired of people's presets sucking SS
don't suck we created 14 all new custom
Lightroom presets that you can check out

befores and The Afters and if you decide
to pick them up right now they are
currently on sale or if you want to get
the Grand Slam bundle that is fr Pack 1
2 3 and four you can save even more now
let's get back to the video now let's
jump back into to the bowling alley this
is Jason Belmonte one of the greatest if
not the greatest Bowlers of all time and
I tracked him as he walked back is it an
extreme situation no but it's a lower
light situation cuz I'm at 5,000 ISO at
1 1,000th of a second at
f1.8 the point of having an f1.8 lens is
it allows you to allow more light in
while keeping that ISO a little lower in
this case if I didn't have a 1.8 and I
had an F4 lens my ISO would have to
shoot so much higher or I'd have to
bring my shutter speed down to a place
where I wouldn't be able to freeze the
action say at the Harlem Globe truers
game so having the 1.8 is so beneficial
when you're starting out that that's why
I'm leaning towards recommending a lens
like this when you're just starting out
to get that f1.8 because it allows you
to let more light in as we zoom in on
Jason's face he is in focus is there
grain there sure that's going to happen
in lowlight situations but look the
scoreboards out of focus but I can still
tell that he bowled a 258 which is very
good now continuing on we've got Jason
belon talking to Kyle troop and the
reason I'm shooting like this is I'm
focused on Kyle Tru I just want to show
the separation that you get between the
two subjects at 1.8 as well as the
background now let me show you what you
can get when you focus on the subject
and then focus on say the pencil that
the subject is writing with in this case
I have Dom Barrett here writing up his
scores got down nice and low focused in
on his face Perfect Look the pencil's
out of focus nice separation at 1.8 we
go to the next image of him doing the
exact same thing all I did was shift my
focus to the pencil and now he's out of
focus that's what you get when you get a
1.8 lens you start to get better
separation not only are you letting more
light in but you're getting better
separation moving on we have a couple
more images to show you starting with a
portrait of my friend Sully who works
out on the PBA tour he runs the ball
truck you know where they get to drill
all the balls I'm like Sully just stand
here let me get a portrait of you I'm
zooming in eye looks fantastic that's
all I care about I don't care if it's a
cheap lens or the most expensive lens in
the world if the eye is in focus and I
can't tell you no one's going to look at
this and be like this wasn't taken with
an Nikon top-of-the-line lens no one's
going to be able to know and that's the
cool thing that's what I'm looking for
is can I get pictures with something
that's much less expensive to recommend
to you guys and get good results so
let's jump out to the Harlem Globe
triers game once again we've got a
couple of pictures here we've got our
buddy here who hooks us up with passes
he is nice and sharp the colors look
perfectly fine to me after I tweak the
raw files I'm happy with those results
uh and this little kid just standing
here with his mom waiting uh to get a
ball signed was was awesome nice
separation look as we zoom in on the
background those people are out of focus
that's what you're getting that's the
difference between I'd like to say a
cheap kit lens and something that allows
you to shoot at 1.8 you're making it
look more professional and that's the
type of results that you get when you
get into a lens like this so how much is
this lens 379 bucks not bad at all we
compare that to Nikon's 35 1.8 Z that's
$847 new is the Nikon version good the
answer is yeah it's very good it's a
it's a lens that someone who has more
money to spend and has been shooting
longer would move into a 3518 Z because
it's going to be faster focusing it's
going to be a little bit more accurate
probably slightly sharper and give you
better results and better color in the
long run but for people starting out
$379 woo not bad at all let me cut in
here real quick and let you know that
this video is brought to you by
Squarespace if you're looking to build
your very own online portfolio use what
I've been using for close to 15 years at
this point for my personal website
because it's simple easy affordable and
I don't need to know coding to get your
14-day free trial head on over to
squarespace.com fronos photo if you
decide that it's for you use the code
fronos photo at checkout to get 10% off
your first order two more tests before I
tell you if it's worth it and who it's
for sniff test and wind tunnel test
we're going to start with the sniff
test oh smells like one of those
basketballs that the Harlem Globe TRS
give out because it's it's blue and yep
I'm getting some Red O and I'm getting
some white yep that's what it smells
like when tunnel test time I worry about
third fourth party lenses and wind
tunnel tests
though Stephen guess what it passed it
passed the wind tunnel test cuz it
didn't fly off the
table so I'll tell you I I was surprised
I'm glad I tried out a lens like this
fourth party third party whatever you
want to call it this is a new generation
of lenses that are coming out from these
new manufacturers and honestly they're
making some pretty compelling lens is
for the price it comes down to Value so
who is this for this is for someone
who's just starting out and doesn't want
to spend
$847 or
$545 on a lens when they just bought a
camera for five or 600 bucks for 379
bucks this is a very nice option to get
into a 1.8 lens quickly for a Nikon or
quickly for a Sony e-mount very good
choice very good option for the money
look you can get great results with
anything if you know what you're doing
even when you're just starting out if
you don't know what you're doing you're
still going to get better results when
you put this thing on 1.8 you get that
Focus right where it needs to be you're
going to be happy with what you're
getting more so than a kit lens so
that's what I have to say about this if
you guys have any comments or feedback
please leave it down below thank you
very much for watching Jared po androos
