It then transitions to domestic concerns, specifically the criticism of social media giant Meta by a leading psychologist who resigned over the company's handling of content related to suicide and self-harm. pages of tomorrow's newspapers while you

watch us and we are joined tonight by

play01:54

Nancy pilder and Anita batang welcome to

play01:57

you both let us start with the politics

play02:00

shall we and uh the threats um real or

play02:04

otherwise to Rishi sunak leadership

play02:07

let's have a look at the

play02:09

Observer um and as we we said running

play02:12

through the the newspapers we've got

play02:14

senior Tories saying that it's

play02:15

absolutely uh Bonkers quote that there

play02:19

should be a plot to replace Rishi sunak

play02:23

is it Bonkers Nancy I mean the whole

play02:26

part's gone Bonkers hasn't it and has

play02:28

been that way for quite a long time so

play02:31

seemingly this is a plot not led by

play02:33

Penny M than herself but by other people

play02:36

who think they need to get rich out as

play02:38

quickly as they can but then there are

play02:40

quotes in there saying well she would be

play02:42

the shortest ever serving prime minister

play02:45

shorter than what we had Fairly recently

play02:47

we all remember was just there for a few

play02:49

weeks it just seems their back is

play02:51

against the wall all the polls show that

play02:54

there is going to be an absolute

play02:55

Landslide against the conservatives and

play02:58

they're desperately

play02:59

now Penny Mor herself thinks that this

play03:01

is people who don't like her within the

play03:03

party who are sort of setting her up to

play03:05

fail so that when she makes a proper bid

play03:07

for the leadership again let's not

play03:09

forget she's done this before she might

play03:11

be less successful because this would

play03:13

tarnish her whole reputation it's just a

play03:15

mess and this is not just the party in a

play03:17

mess it's the country because they're

play03:18

supposed to be leading us and instead

play03:20

they are backstabbing school children

play03:23

Anita do you think it it's credible that

play03:25

Penny Moran doesn't know anything about

play03:27

this alleged grouping of around around

play03:31

her yeah I I think it is very plausible

play03:33

that she's not driving any of this I

play03:35

mean I've been watching leadership

play03:37

contests for a very long time and

play03:39

Maneuvers behind the scenes and there's

play03:41

never been a credible one that kind of

play03:43

first appears on the front pages of any

play03:45

of these paper so I think that there is

play03:47

something to some of the coverage that

play03:48

suggests this is a sort of double and

play03:51

triple Bluff with members of certain

play03:53

parts of the party letting it be known

play03:55

that they wouldn't mind Penny morn in

play03:57

order to get other members of the party

play03:59

that do like Penny Moren on board with

play04:01

the idea of a contest so I think that um

play04:03

you know Nancy makes a point around well

play04:05

you know the conservatives are in

play04:07

government I don't think anyone who's

play04:08

mentioned around any of these papers is

play04:11

anywhere close to government I think

play04:12

this is a lot of backbenchers or a few

play04:15

backbenchers actually having a few

play04:17

conversations about what if we threw

play04:19

everything up in the air and could you

play04:20

do this and could you do that and you

play04:22

know four-dimensional chess and it

play04:24

actually is just a kind of newspaper

play04:27

distraction from the kinds of things

play04:28

that I'm sure on unak and Hunt's mind as

play04:31

they get into this quite tricky period

play04:33

for the government yeah Nancy the the

play04:35

the article saying that several um

play04:37

conservative MPS are maintaining that

play04:39

Benny morn has been on maneuvers for

play04:42

months uh making clear she'd be happy to

play04:44

visit MP's constituencies and get to

play04:46

know their local party officials well I

play04:48

think she has but I think she's waiting

play04:50

for after the election I think they're

play04:51

all waiting for after the election it's

play04:53

almost like richy himself is the only

play04:55

one who doesn't want let's just have a

play04:56

May election let's get it out the way

play04:58

because we know which way it's going

play04:59

there's no good news coming for the

play05:00

conservatives the budget isn't going to

play05:03

suddenly make people feel better about

play05:04

themselves there's been no bounce back

play05:06

after that there is nothing good coming

play05:08

it's going to get worse and worse for

play05:10

them as so why don't they get out of the

play05:11

way so I think they're all maneuvering

play05:13

to replace him I think it's just the

play05:15

timing that's in question all the MPS I

play05:17

speak to they'd rather there was a

play05:18

sooner election although there were a

play05:20

lot of red wall once red wall seats who

play05:23

are very worried that they won't be MPS

play05:25

at all so there are other people who are

play05:26

joking well they're trying to keep hold

play05:28

of their salaries for as long as can

play05:30

I've not heard I mean Nancy you must

play05:32

speak to different conservative MPS to

play05:34

me because I don't know a single

play05:35

conservative MP that wants the election

play05:37

to happen in May um uh well because

play05:41

there are kind of some optimistic

play05:43

readings that actually when you look at

play05:44

where the economy is going when you look

play05:46

at where jobs are when you look at what

play05:47

might happen to interest rates when you

play05:49

look at what growth might look like

play05:50

towards the end of the year this could

play05:52

all be much more promising and that's

play05:54

obviously quite a good thing for the

play05:55

country so um I think we're talking do

play05:57

you actually think they're going to win

play05:58

the next election I didn't say that

play06:00

that I I said that I've not heard this

play06:02

well let's just get it over and done

play06:04

with I think there is still a really

play06:06

important job to do around Seward in the

play06:08

economy at the moment so no um interest

play06:10

in in having the the election sooner

play06:13

rather than later yeah I mean I I

play06:15

certainly don't get to decide it but I

play06:16

think it was interesting that sunak kind

play06:18

of ruled out this having an election on

play06:20

the day of um the local elections which

play06:22

obviously the party um you know would

play06:25

would they be quite ready for that labor

play06:26

obviously seemed to think that was going

play06:27

to happen but I think that that has

play06:29

change and hopefully like dampen down

play06:31

some of the hysteria around the timings

play06:33

of the election and the frustration with

play06:35

all of that is you're not then focusing

play06:37

on any the policy issues that actually

play06:39

the public want to see action on and

play06:41

Nancy do you think it's a realistic

play06:43

prospect that they would want to to go

play06:45

for another leader before the the the

play06:49

election I mean the suggestion in the

play06:51

the papers is that that you know they're

play06:52

putting the Sunday Telegraph is saying

play06:54

that M's being put forward as a stalking

play06:57

horse for right-wing tour

play07:00

rival so that they it's a way of getting

play07:02

Rishi sunak out do you think really that

play07:04

is the goal no and I think no I don't

play07:07

think it is but I've got to say look at

play07:09

how that party in government has behaved

play07:12

it's not being a realistic look bis came

play07:15

in with a massive majority then we had

play07:17

somebody in for a very short amount of

play07:18

time who completely destroyed everything

play07:20

then we got rich we haven't had a vote

play07:21

we haven't had a say on this for a very

play07:23

long time I mean normal people who

play07:25

normally have a vote on who is prime

play07:27

minister so actually I just don't think

play07:28

there is any really realism within the

play07:30

conservative part I'm not quite sure

play07:32

that what the Prime Minister wants is

play07:34

the same as what the party wants and I'm

play07:36

not sure the party as a whole knows what

play07:38

it wants I think let's remember this is

play07:39

the party that went into brexit to get

play07:41

rid of that debate once and for all

play07:42

never thinking it would happen they have

play07:44

made a complete mess for a very long

play07:46

time now so realistically I would say no

play07:49

but also I'm not I don't think they're

play07:50

based in realism but Anita what's the

play07:52

point then of of putting Penny morant's

play07:54

name out there what what what's the

play07:56

ultimate goal I think that often when it

play07:59

comes to the party in government you can

play08:00

find two or three people that hold

play08:02

pretty much any View at any one time and

play08:05

I think that clearly there are according

play08:06

to the Sunday Telegraph that there was

play08:09

some kind of meeting that took place or

play08:11

understood to have taken place U between

play08:14

some prominent figures on the right and

play08:16

some prominent supporters of Morant from

play08:18

days past where they let it be known

play08:20

that someone like Penny they think could

play08:22

be a good leader and so this could be we

play08:25

are we could be talking about two people

play08:27

we could be talking about four people

play08:29

certainly don't seem to be talking about

play08:31

the majority of conservative MPS who

play08:33

think that actually this is a time for

play08:35

any change in leadership let alone a

play08:37

change in Penny M with to Penny M but

play08:40

two people can cook up a plot though can

play08:41

they I mean they can they can brief that

play08:43

they cooked up a plot right and they can

play08:45

they can make front pages with it but

play08:46

whether or not that changes the

play08:48

political weather I think the thing

play08:49

that's really striking is most of the

play08:51

kind of prominent figures that you have

play08:53

seen who might agitate in the past have

play08:56

come out quite publicly and said this is

play08:57

ridiculous and I think that that is

play08:59

actually quite meaningful in this

play09:01

context Bonkers to be precise is what

play09:03

they've said um the express throwing

play09:05

Nigel farage into the mix Nancy talking

play09:07

about Bonkers yes you said that not me I

play09:10

did indeed I mean this is actually

play09:13

interesting so we um we one of our local

play09:16

newspapers in man Mansfield and Ashfield

play09:18

Chad we we know um quite well what

play09:21

happens when MPS move across the reform

play09:23

and obviously um there were comments

play09:25

last week um by the conservative wasn't

play09:29

then and then suddenly became reformed

play09:31

that there's going to be a tsunamy of

play09:32

people following him now I'm not

play09:34

convinced that is true a tsunami is a

play09:35

very strong word but I actually do think

play09:38

that reform I hate to say it but I think

play09:40

reform and I think when farage comes

play09:41

back this talks about him dusting off

play09:43

his big mouth I think he will win votes

play09:46

again and he's winning votes because the

play09:47

politicians are supposed to be leaders

play09:49

are so poor that people are still

play09:50

looking desperately around for people

play09:52

who are saying the right things and I

play09:54

think that will cause even more trouble

play09:55

for the conservatives but I think they

play09:57

sadly will win lots of votes and need to

play09:59

your predictions for reform UK well it's

play10:01

very unclear here what um how the brexit

play10:05

champion as they describe in the Sunday

play10:07

Express is going to turn up it doesn't

play10:09

say that he's going to be the leader

play10:11

again although it does quite carefully

play10:12

say that Richard Ty doesn't care about

play10:15

titles um and and and farage remains I

play10:17

think their honorary president so I

play10:19

think there is a question I think it's

play10:21

actually quite plausible the express

play10:22

says that a lot of people may not have

play10:25

heard of Reform or may not have the

play10:26

profile that it could like the ukip and

play10:29

party had because they lack farage and

play10:32

so like that could change things but

play10:34

it's interesting that farage has for

play10:36

quite consistent period of time in spite

play10:38

of being courted quite vigorously by

play10:40

Richard T has not wanted to kind of

play10:43

Enter The Fray and enter the front line

play10:44

again but I think that actually reform

play10:46

has relatively speaking underperformed

play10:49

ukip and the brexit party when you look

play10:51

at where they were positioned so I think

play10:52

it will be interesting to see if farage

play10:54

does come back and also if it does

play10:57

catapult reform into more Central

play10:59

position in the conversation yes they're

play11:00

saying that he would lead the election

play11:02

charge but haven't sort of given a title

play11:04

but it's interesting not so long ago we

play11:06

were talking about him potentially um

play11:08

joining the the Tories weren't we there

play11:10

were murmurings around around that

play11:12

mostly from him but yeah yes that's true

play11:15

the times um quite serious Grant shaps

play11:18

has had to cut short a visit to to

play11:21

Ukraine because there was some

play11:22

intelligence that there was a a credible

play11:24

threat to him Nancy yeah I mean

play11:26

incredibly serious so the the believe

play11:29

the British intelligence believed that

play11:31

the credible threat was it could be

play11:32

targeted by a Russ Russian missile

play11:34

strike you don't get much more serious

play11:36

than that and they clearly um they had

play11:38

the intelligence they believed it was

play11:40

going to happen it comes on the back of

play11:41

Putin advancing on the Eastern Front all

play11:44

the threats that he's made I mean we

play11:45

were talking the day he was threatening

play11:47

last um just last week earlier this week

play11:49

um about I may well use nuclear weapons

play11:52

and it's kind of it's almost become

play11:53

background noise but it's not background

play11:54

noise is it this is a man who has got

play11:56

the power to do that if he wanted to um

play11:58

and the whole sort of American debate

play12:00

the America the money been stuck so that

play12:03

Ukraine is not getting the help that it

play12:04

needs to fight back and here we are with

play12:07

potentially UK high-profile politicians

play12:11

allegedly been a very high Target yeah

play12:13

an need to a reminder Les we need it

play12:15

that the war is still very real yes in

play12:17

Ukraine and and we had a situation with

play12:19

zalinski um and the Greek Prime Minister

play12:23

M tus that was um where they had a near

play12:25

miss with a missile that was you know

play12:27

really quite close um to their moade and

play12:30

killed um five people so I think uh two

play12:33

elements of this is really important

play12:35

obviously Greece being a member of NATO

play12:37

that would have been um quite a

play12:38

significant shift in the dynamic that

play12:40

could see most of Europe uh in war as as

play12:43

a result of this and also as Nancy says

play12:45

the kind of the the stall and stalemate

play12:48

that's happening over that $60 billion

play12:50

do package um from the US doesn't just

play12:52

matter in and of itself but also it's a

play12:55

signal of um Western unity and Western

play12:57

intent and I think as that starts to or

play12:59

potentially starts to fracture

play13:01

especially if Putin feels empowered

play13:03

following the elections that are taking

play13:05

place in Russia Today then we could see

play13:07

this shift to a new game particularly as

play13:09

Ukraine are sadly kind of stalling in

play13:11

their offensive okay andita and Nancy

play13:13

thank you very much for the moment we're

play13:15

going to take a break coming up we'll

play13:16

look at whether we might soon know more

play13:19

about the princess of wales's Health uh

play13:21

when we come back to stay with

play13:28

us

play13:36

welcome back you are watching The Press

play13:39

preview still with me Nancy Fielder and

play13:41

Anita Bing let's take a look at the

play13:43

Observer front page and this uh story

play13:47

quite alarming regarding meta and a

play13:50

leading psychologist who advises meta on

play13:53

suicide prevention and self harm she's

play13:56

quit her role because she's accusing the

play13:59

Tech Giant of turning a blind eye to

play14:01

harmful content on Instagram uh

play14:03

repeatedly ignoring expert advice and

play14:06

prioritizing profit over lives Nancy

play14:09

yeah this is a quite devastating story

play14:11

for any parent who has a child who is

play14:14

obsessed with their phone on social

play14:15

media which is absolutely all of us

play14:17

let's be honest and she worked she's an

play14:19

Insider she worked with them advised

play14:21

them tried to help them for three years

play14:23

and she's basically quit as you said

play14:26

saying they only care about money and

play14:28

they don't take take the photos down and

play14:30

what is so worrying it's just such a

play14:33

powerful force that all our children

play14:35

have in their hands and this makes it

play14:37

sound like they are deliberately if you

play14:39

if you're sort of following the thread

play14:41

of any theme they deliberately feed you

play14:43

that information and we all know that

play14:44

because we all get that ourselves on

play14:46

social media or whatever age but

play14:48

actually if that's about suicide if

play14:49

that's about self harm well we've seen

play14:51

an inquest that that ends up with

play14:52

children killing themselves and the fact

play14:55

that they kind of they just we've known

play14:57

about this for a while and now we've got

play14:58

an ins side of saying it she's so

play15:00

annoyed she's quick and yet who holds

play15:02

them who can hold them to account they

play15:04

are so powerful so rich and in all our

play15:06

lives all the time and this is

play15:08

incredibly damning isn't it yes I think

play15:10

it is um actually I think she talks

play15:12

quite a lot not just about it's not the

play15:15

sort of the idea that they aren't doing

play15:16

anything but she says the ultimate

play15:18

agenda is about interaction right and a

play15:20

lot of um apps are really engineered

play15:23

towards having people stay on the

play15:24

platform for as long as possible and I

play15:26

think that what she is implying here is

play15:28

that is hindering their efforts to

play15:29

remove some of the damaging content

play15:31

which is particularly impacting um young

play15:34

women and girls she says in particular

play15:36

here so I think that presumably was part

play15:37

of her Focus um so it's the question of

play15:41

like how do you balance the priorities

play15:43

that she sees as being much more

play15:44

commercial with their broader duty to

play15:47

society and to particularly to to young

play15:49

people that she mentions who are at a

play15:51

vulnerable state and are potentially

play15:53

viewing this kind of content yeah I just

play15:55

want to read out a um response from meta

play15:59

so I think it's important to to hear

play16:01

their line and they say that suicide and

play16:03

self harm are complex issues and we take

play16:05

them incredibly seriously we've

play16:08

consulted with safety experts including

play16:10

those in our suicide and self harm

play16:12

Advisory Group for many years and their

play16:15

feedback has helped us continue to make

play16:17

significant progress in this space most

play16:20

recently we announced we'll hide content

play16:23

that discusses suicide and self harm

play16:25

from teens even if shared by someone

play16:27

they follow one of many updates we've

play16:30

made after thoughtful discussion with

play16:32

our advisers does that allay your fears

play16:37

Nancy no and the the direct quote from

play16:39

this Insider is on the surface it seems

play16:42

like they care and they are very good at

play16:43

the pr game but any of us can take our

play16:46

children's phone and go down these

play16:48

rabbit holes and experience this for

play16:50

ourselves and I just think it's

play16:52

something that's so serious they are so

play16:54

powerful if they wanted to they could

play16:57

get rid of this I have no doubt about

play16:59

that I'm not saying they're not taking

play17:00

steps but they're not doing they're not

play17:02

doing the Urgent absolutely necessary

play17:06

action they could do click of a finger

play17:08

yeah I think there is one component of

play17:10

this that's quite complicated which is

play17:11

referenc in that piece which is I do

play17:13

think that suicide and and complexities

play17:15

around mental health have a multiplicity

play17:17

of factors and I think sometimes we have

play17:20

had conversations about vulnerable

play17:22

people and particularly in the context

play17:24

of people losing their lives that has

play17:26

focused solely on social media as as if

play17:29

like there were no phenomenons of

play17:30

societal pressure and bullying and all

play17:32

the other components that young people

play17:33

have to deal with at an early age and

play17:35

building resilience in young people and

play17:37

helping them to manage and monitor their

play17:40

use is also equally as important and I

play17:42

think that sometimes we get sort of

play17:44

stuck in the idea that like there's one

play17:46

thing that would fix this if we look at

play17:47

what happened during the pandemic for

play17:48

instance of course social media was a

play17:50

factor but lack of social interaction

play17:52

was you know a huge thing for lots of

play17:54

young people so I think that whether

play17:56

it's education whether it's parents

play17:57

whether it's technology companies I

play17:59

think there's a lot that all sides could

play18:00

actually do to really build resilience

play18:02

in young people that's very true but

play18:03

this is one that's easily solvable they

play18:05

have the power to solve that and it is

play18:06

just an element you're absolutely right

play18:08

but I think they could do more and they

play18:09

have got the money to do if they wanted

play18:11

to yeah okay let's um have a final look

play18:14

at the uh Sunday times and this story

play18:16

about the Princess of Wales um expected

play18:19

to speak about her recovery we've only

play18:21

got about 30 seconds expected to it's a

play18:23

royal Source Who says that she may at

play18:25

some point when she reappears again um I

play18:27

I don't think it's particularly likely

play18:29

it would be great if she wanted to at

play18:31

some point but there doesn't seem a

play18:33

whole amount of basis behind it I don't

play18:34

think I actually think they did this in

play18:37

order to kind of help dampen down the

play18:38

speculation if you are going to find out

play18:40

something real at some point so please

play18:42

get off social media and get off Tik Tok

play18:45

doing your um you know your conspiracy

play18:46

videos um so uh who knows what we

play18:49

actually will find out but it feels like

play18:50

it's sort of a everyone calmed down you

play18:53

are going to find out more damage liit

play18:54

it won't work okay Nancy and Anita thank

play18:58

you thank you very much for taking us

play19:00

through the papers we shall see you in

play19:01

the next hour
