Transcripts
Oh hey everybody. Since this video is coming out the first Thursday in Women's History
Month, I thought that Heather L.'s question would be perfect. 'Hi Cristen.' Hello! 'Could
you do a video discussing the various types and waves of feminism? The general ideas of
Liberal Feminism, Radical Feminism, Socialist Feminism, ect. Thanks and love your show.'
For different types of feminism I'm going to need a little help from America's favorite
feminist, Barbie, who um, as you might notice is having some neck problems because I ripped
her head off for a previous video about sexual objectification. [Ominous sound]. Way to take
one for the team, Barbie.
The most basic definition of feminism is the belief in the political, social and economic equality
of the sexes and from there, dozens of philosophical types of feminism exist that propose different
sources of gender inequality and the most effective solutions to uproot it. So with
Barbie's help we're going to learn about 11 types of feminism. According to liberal feminism,
female oppression is rooted in the legal and institutional discrimination that denies women
complete personhood and the liberty, hence liberal, to choose the best life for herself
that goes along with that. Liberal feminists are all about changing laws and institutional
policies to promote things like equal pay, breaking gender lines and winning political
rights. According to Marxist feminism, capitalism along with the devaluation of domestic work
and childcare are what hold women back. The solution? Overthrow capitalism, dissolve the
family as an economic union and compensate domestic work. According to radical feminism
female oppression roots back to women's biological responsibly for both reproduction as well
as male sexual pleasure. According to anti-porn feminism which had it's heyday in the 1980s,
pornography is the root of everyday male violence against women. Meanwhile sex positive feminism
rejects patriarchal limitations and double standards imposed on sex as well as institutional
and legal interference with sexual activity and expression. Barbie, I'd never dream of
slut-shaming you. Thanks Ken. [Awkward laughter]. According to separatist feminism the patriarchy
and sexual biology are so powerful even the best Kens aren't much help with liberating
women so they choose to live away from him. Cultural feminism maintains that female oppression
is rooted in the devaluation of feminine traits and by elevating essentialist womanly traits
like peacefulness, nurturing and intuition our society will be completely renovated.
Womanism or intersectional feminism emphasizes how female oppression isn't just about gender
and sex because our gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, class, ability and
other factors that all influence the oppressions that we individually experience every day.
According to postcolonial feminism eradicating gender inequality around the world won't depend
on finding shared oppressions but paying attention to where women are on the map and the colonialism,
imperialism and exploitation associated with each location. According to ecofeminism, gender
equality must be achieved not only for the benefit of humanity but also to save the environment.
A newer branch of feminism founded in 2000, girlie feminism believes in gender equality
via reclaiming feminine gendered activities and still being feminist. Oh, Ken lost his
pants. While still being feminist. You know, like playing with Barbies.
