play00:00

- Yo, I'm impressed.

play00:01

I am very, very impressed with this car right here.

play00:05

This is the Tesla Model 3, the 2024 refresh.

play00:09

A lot of people are calling it the Highland,

play00:11

that's not actually in the name, but this car,

play00:14

I've only been testing it for maybe a week now,

play00:16

but I've noticed a lot of little things different.

play00:19

The main way you're gonna be able to tell this car different

play00:21

from the already very popular Model 3 that's out,

play00:25

is the new distinctive angular headlights,

play00:27

the new point-to-your-face.

play00:29

But there's a lot more that's new to this car

play00:32

that sort of add up, to me, to feel like a,

play00:36

honestly a worthy flagship.

play00:38

I know the Model S is, you know, higher end

play00:40

and it has the Plaid variant and all the performance

play00:42

and all that fun stuff.

play00:43

But this is the car that people are going to know

play00:47

and see the most often as a Tesla,

play00:49

it's the Model 3 and the Model Y.

play00:51

So you could argue this is their most important car

play00:54

and it kind of feels now like a mini Model S.

play00:56

So let's look at everything that's new.

play00:58

So first of all, like I said,

play00:59

aesthetics are actually one of the big things.

play01:01

So when you see these new sleek slim headlights,

play01:04

that's how you know you're looking at the new Model 3.

play01:07

But also this is actually a new paint, Ultra Red,

play01:10

and I kind of feel like the Canon R5 is getting the color.

play01:13

I can actually appreciate it.

play01:14

There's also a new Stealth Gray color,

play01:17

but I like the Ultra Red.

play01:19

And just right off the bat

play01:21

it's a little bit of a further down slope on the nose,

play01:24

and it's always been a really simple car,

play01:27

but you can actually tell now

play01:28

it's a little bit more aerodynamic,

play01:30

which is gonna give you a little bit better range.

play01:33

I've been driving this car for a couple days getting,

play01:36

averaging well under 300 watt-hours per mile,

play01:40

and at a full state of charge, 330 miles of range

play01:44

in the cold, this weather.

play01:46

Now it's Tesla's 330 miles of range

play01:48

so you're probably gonna get more like 290, 285,

play01:52

something like that,

play01:53

but still the fact that it's getting the same range

play01:55

as what my Plaid was getting is pretty impressive.

play01:58

So officially the new drag coefficient is 0.219

play02:02

and that's mostly gonna come from the front of the car

play02:04

and the places that are hitting the most air.

play02:06

From the side it's still gonna look

play02:08

just like a normal Model 3,

play02:09

maybe you can tell that little front shape

play02:11

is slightly different with a slightly lower nose,

play02:13

but slightly updated wheels too.

play02:16

I'm really liking this Ultra Red color.

play02:19

But yeah, it looks like a Model 3 from the side

play02:20

until you get to the back,

play02:22

which is where you'll see the new taillights.

play02:24

And they are also pretty distinctive and angular,

play02:29

and I think pretty nice.

play02:30

Here's a maybe hot take, the no Tesla logo,

play02:34

it just says Tesla in text now on the back.

play02:37

And at first I didn't really love that,

play02:39

but I've started to get used to it.

play02:41

So the only Tesla logo is actually on the front hood

play02:43

and if I wanna open it up,

play02:45

that power liftgate is the same as it's always been

play02:48

and you've got a pretty decent sized trunk.

play02:49

But now you'll notice that those taillights are one piece,

play02:53

so if I close this again, you'll see that entire taillight

play02:58

is uninterrupted on the back trunk piece.

play03:01

So it doesn't have any gaps at night,

play03:02

you just see one continuous light and I like that.

play03:05

An AC dual motor.

play03:06

This is not a performance trim,

play03:08

this is just a standard Model 3 for right now,

play03:11

and that's the back.

play03:12

But most of the things that are new with this car, again,

play03:14

are very subtle things and a lot of them are on the inside

play03:17

in quality, in materials, and in making it feel and drive

play03:22

like a much more comfortable.

play03:25

It's just better, just quality all around is higher.

play03:27

So I'm gonna start with the door

play03:29

because that's actually the first thing you'll notice.

play03:31

So the handle's the same and the way you get in is the same,

play03:33

but if you've seen German cars,

play03:35

you might have seen this little notch before

play03:39

and this little part here that plugs into the door.

play03:42

In general, there's a better seal to the entire door

play03:46

all the way around the cabin

play03:48

and that makes this a much quieter car when driving

play03:52

and even when getting inside.

play03:53

I'll close the door behind me.

play03:57

You probably can't tell, but it's pretty quiet.

play03:59

And so in general, this really still feels

play04:01

very recognizably just like previous Model 3s,

play04:05

but everywhere you look,

play04:06

there's lots of little things in the direction of premium,

play04:09

in the direction of comfortable,

play04:11

and in the direction of luxury a little bit,

play04:13

not so much sporty.

play04:15

And we'll talk about what I think might work

play04:17

for a performance Model 3 version of this

play04:19

maybe a little later, but let's look around.

play04:22

So first of all, this is the new steering wheel.

play04:24

This I think is the only thing

play04:25

that anyone may have complaints about

play04:27

because as you can probably notice right away,

play04:30

there's no more stalks.

play04:31

So the Model 3 always had the stalks

play04:33

while the Model S and X didn't.

play04:35

Now there's no more blinker stalks

play04:37

and there's no driver stalks

play04:38

so if you want to switch to drive,

play04:40

you put your foot on the brake and swipe forward or backward

play04:44

just like the Model S.

play04:45

Or, fun fact, actually, there's your PRNDL up here

play04:50

if you really, I don't think most people are gonna use that,

play04:52

but in case of the screen not being on,

play04:55

that's how you change gears.

play04:57

But then the rest of the steering wheel

play04:58

is your buttons on the steering wheel.

play05:01

So here on the right hand side,

play05:02

that's gonna be your windshield wipers,

play05:03

which you can also switch to automatic,

play05:06

your voice dictation.

play05:07

And then this will turn on autopilot

play05:08

and if you wanna turn up or down, that's gonna be

play05:10

the distance between you and the car in front of you

play05:13

while on autopilot.

play05:14

Then on the left, that's your blinkers,

play05:17

left or right blinkers

play05:18

are on the steering wheel in Model 3 now,

play05:20

and your high beams,

play05:21

and of course, your your media and volume.

play05:24

But that does mean the middle is a regular horn,

play05:27

not a button on the steering wheel,

play05:28

and it is a pretty close to circular wheel.

play05:31

So there are some things that people are gonna like

play05:34

and there are some things

play05:35

that people are definitely gonna have to get used to

play05:37

like the no stalks.

play05:38

But again, this is in the theme, it feels like to me,

play05:42

of mini Model S.

play05:43

So then everywhere else you look,

play05:45

improved materials and build quality.

play05:47

I like this Alcantara, it's nice and soft.

play05:49

You've got all the same switches you normally do

play05:51

and the door to get in and out.

play05:53

Up here it's just your air vents,

play05:56

but it's kind of like this fabric here,

play05:58

it's a pretty unique look.

play05:59

Obviously you're gonna have a lot of cars

play06:01

have your screen back here,

play06:02

so this is just a very obvious plain open space,

play06:05

but I kind of like this sort of a gray fabric.

play06:07

And then all the way around the car,

play06:09

which you'll notice especially when you're driving

play06:11

is this LED lighting.

play06:13

So this light strip goes all the way around up at the front,

play06:16

all the way around the side of the car,

play06:19

and yes, you can change the look of it

play06:22

just by dragging around and changing the color of the LEDs.

play06:24

There's purple, there's red, yellow.

play06:28

It looks pretty good at night just because it's, again,

play06:30

pretty continuous all around the car.

play06:33

And then of course here is the main center console.

play06:36

This screen has a faster computer

play06:38

and it is way more responsive.

play06:40

Like all of the software

play06:41

and everything that you do in this car

play06:43

is just as fast as ever

play06:44

and often even faster than I remember, which is awesome.

play06:48

And that's always good to see

play06:49

because Tesla's literally been the best software in any car

play06:52

that's not CarPlay or Android Auto for years now.

play06:55

Also, you may have noticed

play06:56

I've got this new view of the parking spot I'm in,

play07:01

which if I pull forward a little bit,

play07:02

you'll notice zooms out.

play07:04

That is the new High Fidelity Park Assist.

play07:07

It's not a 360 camera, but it's pretty close.

play07:11

It gives you sort of this heat map

play07:13

of the things that are around you.

play07:15

You can see the parking lines in the parking lot you're in,

play07:19

and then you'll see this little heat thing

play07:23

based on how close you are to the thing behind you.

play07:25

So I'm right against the curb now, so that's why it's red.

play07:28

It's decent, I mean that's all-improved with Tesla Model 3.

play07:32

These are also now softer, better seats in the front,

play07:34

they are heated and ventilated,

play07:35

and the back seats are also heated.

play07:37

But I'm gonna show you something else in the backseat now

play07:40

that you might like even more.

play07:42

So this is the backseat of the Model 3,

play07:45

it's about the same amount of space as before

play07:47

so if I'm getting behind a six three driver's position,

play07:51

that's, it's not a ton of space

play07:52

but the floor is flat through the middle.

play07:55

But look at that, a nice flush touchscreen

play07:59

with, actually, some pretty thin bezels right on the back

play08:02

to control all of the airflow and the HVAC stuff,

play08:05

and even a little bit of media if you want to,

play08:07

on the back of this car.

play08:08

This is a way better backseat experience.

play08:12

Honestly, this makes such a huge difference

play08:13

as a backseat passenger in this car.

play08:15

I've been in the back of a lot of Model 3s

play08:17

that have been Ubers and things like that.

play08:19

You still have also this LED lighting back here,

play08:22

again, I like that these backseats are heated

play08:23

if you want them to be,

play08:24

and then the glass over your head with plenty of headroom.

play08:27

It's not quite the uninterrupted glass

play08:29

from the Model S and X,

play08:31

but it's what we're used to from Model 3 and Y,

play08:33

which is still a whole lot of glass.

play08:36

Let me get back up to the driver's seat

play08:37

because there are a couple things too

play08:38

that are upgraded significantly just when driving this car.

play08:42

Model 3 has been an easy car to drive,

play08:46

I think it's very simple.

play08:48

I know there's no stalks now,

play08:49

but in general, as far as electric cars,

play08:52

this might be the easiest one

play08:53

to calibrate to one pedal driving-wise,

play08:57

charging network-wise, just in general.

play09:00

But two things, one is acoustically

play09:04

it is so much quieter in here when you're driving,

play09:06

which is awesome.

play09:08

And then it's a softer suspension, noticeably softer.

play09:12

This comes at the expense

play09:13

of maybe a bit of a sporty feeling.

play09:15

I honestly think the old Model 3 was,

play09:18

coil suspension was a little harsh, a little firm sometimes,

play09:21

and I think a lot of owners would agree with that.

play09:23

And this has made really big strides

play09:25

to be way more comfortable to drive

play09:27

and it also has a notably tighter steering radius

play09:32

that wasn't really advertised at all,

play09:33

but that's really cool to see.

play09:35

And then there's also a much improved speaker system,

play09:38

so the speakers in this car,

play09:39

just driving around in this quiet cabin

play09:42

listening to the better speakers

play09:44

is way, way better than previously.

play09:47

This really feels like a mini Model S.

play09:50

But still, if you're a Model 3 fan,

play09:51

you're gonna have some of the hits

play09:52

that you've always been used to.

play09:53

The wireless charger's up here, the key fob card,

play09:57

and then this is the center console storage,

play09:59

which is a big center console spot.

play10:01

And this one doesn't move like Model S,

play10:03

but there's your two cup holders

play10:04

that you can always close just like that and like that.

play10:08

So you still got the front trunk space you're used to,

play10:10

still got the rear trunk space you're used to,

play10:13

and honestly, even the camera quality,

play10:15

these cameras when you look at the camera feed from the car,

play10:18

looks much better.

play10:20

I can actually see raindrops much more higher fidelity

play10:23

when I'm driving this car and the blinkers come on.

play10:25

This is good, man. This is a good car.

play10:28

So I think the general question you might be wondering is,

play10:31

should you get this car?

play10:33

And the only thing I would say is if you're considering

play10:36

something like a performance version of this,

play10:40

consider what you want to do most of the time when driving.

play10:43

I think when street driving this thing's great.

play10:46

Most of the time with street driving,

play10:48

this thing is great and it's quick, it's really quick.

play10:51

I'll try to find an official zero to 60 time,

play10:53

or some horsepower numbers if I can,

play10:55

but for a car with this much range

play10:57

and with a great charging network,

play10:58

like this is a very quick EV.

play11:01

A performance version, for me,

play11:03

would really only gain maybe two things.

play11:06

Obviously the ability to have track mode

play11:08

and be able to dial, you know, your traction control

play11:11

to be front wheel driver, or real wheel driver,

play11:13

or change the slip,

play11:15

or have a little bit more fun while driving.

play11:17

And then maybe getting back to a firmer suspension

play11:20

for that, sort of, track oriented driving.

play11:24

But for the non-performance version, which this is,

play11:28

it's complete, it's great, it's a flagship,

play11:32

it's a mini Model S, it's refined, it's well-built.

play11:36

I'm very impressed by this new Model 3.

play11:40

Let me know what you think.

play11:40

Is this the car that you've been looking forward to?

play11:42

I've been looking forward

play11:43

to seeing it in the US for so long.

play11:44

It was like Europe first

play11:46

and then slowly making its way here.

play11:47

Now it's here and I'm happy I got to test it

play11:50

'cause this thing's good, man.

play11:51

This is the car I would recommend so easily

play11:54

to anyone just looking for a first EV.

play11:56

That's where I'll leave it.

play11:58

Let me know what you think.

play11:59

Thanks for watching, catch you in the next one. Peace.
