Transcripts
these are 10 cheap lenses that will
transform your photo and video images
and I should say up front that the
number one thing standing between you
and the image that you want to capture
is actually your skill level but the
number two thing is the gear so we
shouldn't discount the fact that the
gear is still important regardless of
what skill level you're at but a lot of
people can't afford high-end lenses so
what I've got here is I've got 10 aps-c
lenses this is for crop sensor cameras
if you don't know what kind of camera
you've got you've got a crop sensor
camera the price of these lens start at
19 and they go up to 500 and we've got
everything in between now the first lens
is the cheapest and I'm going to take
this in order of price I'm going to
start at the 20 lens and work my way up
to the most expensive lens
this lens I can't tell you how much I
love shooting with this lens this is an
all plastic lens I'm not even sure if
the lens element is glass it might even
be plastic as well it is specifically
designed to give light leaks and sort of
a vintage interesting Lo-Fi sort of look
it looks like you've applied some crazy
filter in Instagram but I was kind of
stuck in a creative rut recently and I
just bought this lens just as something
different to go out and shoot with and I
really enjoyed it and the images that I
get out of it are totally unique
completely fun you can't even change the
aperture it's at f8 and stays at f8 and
on the back you can see it's got a fixed
aperture and it has these the main
aperture opening then it has a series of
little pin holes around the outside
which creates kind of a interesting
light leak look so this is a really cool
Lo-Fi lens I love the look that you get
out of it and if you're just sort of
stuck in a situation where you're in a
rut and everything looks the same and
you're trying to break that sort of
creative rut then I recommend this lens
it actually comes in EF Mount and then
you have to adapt it to whatever modern
lens mount that you've got and I will
put a link to the lens as well as the
adapters in the description down below
because the lens itself is about 20
bucks and then you're probably up for
another 20 25 bucks for the adapter now
this next one is a 35 millimeter F 1.4
lens it's an 88 dollar lens it it's an
amazing little lens it's an all metal
body it's got a metal lens mount a
polished metal lens mount you really
can't believe that you're getting a lens
of this quality for this price and most
the people that I know that are into
budget lenses they recommend this as the
best cheap lens that they ever recommend
so you're at under 100 you're at under
100 88 and F 1.4 is going to allow you
to get that blurry background that
you're after a lot of people really the
thing they don't like about their kit
lens is they can't get a blurry
background this is going to let you get
a blurry background it's going to be
great for sort of street photography
portraits family photo Family Video it's
a super versatile lens and I think if
you just want something that's better
than your kit lens and you don't want to
spend a lot of money at 88 bucks this is
the lens I do have a review that I will
be publishing on this shortly
now the next one this one is a by the
same manufacturer as the last one this
is the TT Artisans 17 millimeter F 1.4
this is a budget alternative to the
sigma 16 millimeter F 1.4 and in the
description down below I have done a
review of this lens I did it comparing
it to the sigma 16 millimeter and I
actually took this lens and I shot some
YouTube videos with it and when I shot
those videos I didn't tell people that I
was switching from my Sigma 16
millimeter which is about a 400 lens to
this lens which is about a hundred and
eighteen dollar lens off the top of my
head I can't remember specifically all
the prices but these are roughly in the
ballpark maybe it's 130 bucks anyways
long and short I switched to this lens
from the signal lens nobody could tell
the difference and I used this for
probably enough videos there's probably
millions of views on my channel in which
either the main or second camera angle
was shot with this lens you compare it
to the Sigma lens yeah it's not quite as
good but in most creative situations
you're not going to notice the
difference and at F 1.4 once again
you're going to get a great low light
lens and you're also going to be able to
blur out that background a highly
recommended lens this is the third lens
from this set this one is a little over
100 bucks as well it's a 50 millimeter F
1.2 now we're getting an even more
blurry background F 1.2 is going to blur
the background even more and at 50
millimeters 50 millimeters by default is
going to give you a more blurry
background so if you're looking for the
maximum background blur for the money
and you're looking for particularly
headshots and portraits this is going to
be a fantastic little lens I really
enjoy using it once again it's an all
metal lens all metal body it's got a
polished metal lens mount it's even got
a screw on metal lens cap which some
people don't love these screw on caps
but sort of I don't mind them and you're
going to get a f 1.2 aperture so once
again low light super blurry background
the only thing to warn you about with
this lens is it does flare a fair bit so
if you got sunlight or light coming
directly into the lens it does flare and
you get sort of a decontastic image but
I think it actually kind of looks pretty
cool and gives you a look that's
somewhere between a vintage lens and a
modern lens and once again maximum
background blur for your money
uh this is the TT Artisan 50 millimeter
F 1.2 now all the lenses up to this
point have been manual focus lenses this
is an autofocus lens so it's the
cheapest autofocus lens ever made and
it's become one of my favorite lenses of
all time it's around 160 dollars once
again I don't know the exact price but I
will link it below
it's an autofocus lens it's available on
two different mounts three two or three
different mounts
um anyways I'll put it all Linked In the
description down below it's an all metal
lens metal lens mount it's still very
lightweight it comes with this sort of
mini lens hood kind of thing and this is
another one that gives you an image that
looks like a cross between a modern lens
and a vintage lens but you've got that
autofocus it also has the ability to
update the firmware of the lens and to
do that they give you a lens a rear lens
cap that has a USBC port in the back of
it so you plug this into your computer
you put the you put the lens on and then
you can update the firmware on the lens
so that is pretty cool for a lens that's
like well under 200 and it's auto focus
oh I have a I have a video on this lens
as well and I will link that video down
below as well now this one this thing is
just such a crazy lens we're back to
manual focus lenses but we are on a lens
that gives you some of the craziest most
unique background blur and probably the
most unique background blur of any lens
I've ever used this is the TT Artisans
35 millimeter F
0.95 which is just kind of insane so if
you look at the size of the opening in
this lens this gets you a crazy amount
of background blur and it gets you a
crazy interesting looking background
blurb it's around I think it's 220 bucks
219 bucks or something like that and
it's a beautifully built lens it
actually feels and looks like using a
manual lens this is one of the most
popular lenses on the channel as far as
reviews and as far as people clicking
through those links and buying the lens
and it's one that that I highly
recommend and yeah it gives you a unique
look that you're just not going to get
with any other lens out there and 35
millimeters is pretty versatile focal
length so you can use it for photo you
can use it for video big fan of that
lens
the next one's been around for a few
years this is the Rokinon 12 millimeter
F2 lens this is my number one
recommendation for Astro photography and
sort of nighttime wide angle F2 is going
to get you a lot of light in and that 12
millimeter field of view is perfect for
astrophotography so you can position
something in the frame sort of a maybe
it's a lighthouse or a person or a
mountain and then you can shoot a time
lapse of the stars going by or a long
exposure of the stars in the sky and
this is the cheapest lens that that I
know of that does that great sort of
nighttime time lapse in astrophotography
and when I buy into an aps-c system this
is always the first lens that I buy
because I love to do astrophotography
it's one of my favorite things and it's
a bit of a shame I still haven't done a
tutorial on the channel of how to do
nighttime astrophotography and time
lapse and I've been promising that for
years but I have reviewed this lens as
well
um it's around 300 bucks when it's on
sale it's about 260 or something like
that
once again great bargain lens
now this is the viltrox 23 millimeter F
1.4 I think it's 279 dollars it's an
autofocus lens and it is a super
versatile walk around photo and video
lens and the images that come out of
this thing are absolutely magic I have a
video about this one as well one of my
top recommendations as a super super
versatile lens I prefer it for people
that tend to do
street photography and video but not so
much portraits you've got F 1.4 that'll
let you get a blurry background but I
think 35 millimeters or 50 millimeters
are better focal lengths for portraits
so if you're just you're somebody who
wants to take pictures of your kids or
at birthday parties or something like
that and you really want to get a focus
on the person with with a blurry
background then I would probably look at
one of the 35 or 50 millimeters but if
you shoot a lot of video as well or if
you're too hybrid shooter half photo
half video then this is possibly my top
recommendation for the money
now the next one is the sigma 30
millimeter F 1.4 and this is a fantastic
lens this leans me a bit more towards
the photo side going from 23 to 30 is
going to give you a little bit more
cropped in image it's going to give you
a little bit more subject separation it
is an autofocus lens which is nice and
it a sigma does four lenses in this
range now that they've got a 16 they've
got a 23 they got a 30 and they got a
56. the 30 is the cheapest of all of
them and it's around 300 bucks or
something like that so that's very cheap
to buy a Sigma lens an autofocus lens 30
millimeter and going to f 1.4 once again
that's a theme with a lot of these
lenses F 1.4 and it's one of the biggest
differences between the kit lens or
probably the lens you're using and the
image that you want to capture is that F
1.4 because that is going to get you
that blurry background and it's going to
get you that great low light performance
so if you're taking some photos and
they're often looking sort of grainy and
gritty and blurry then that is your poor
low light performance it means that your
camera is trying to work hard it's
trying to it has to crank up it's what's
called ISO basically it's equivalent of
your camera squinting to see the image
because it's too dark by using these
lenses the F 1.4 or the F 1.2 lens
you're going to get more light in that's
going to get you a cleaner looking image
also the majority of these lenses if not
all of these lenses because they are
prime lenses bar the last one I'm going
to talk about here are going to get you
a Sharper Image because a zoom lens has
to work at all different focal lengths
zooming in and out and you usually
sacrifice a bit of sharpness when you do
that so as a rule prime lenses are going
to get you a sharper image and the final
lens I want to talk about is this lens
this is basically a replacement for your
kit lens so your kit lens is a zoom lens
probably goes from 16 to 50 or 18 to 55
or something like that
the thing about your kit lens is number
one the optical quality isn't always
great because the manufacturer is trying
to just give you a lens that they throw
in cheap but encourage you to buy
something better the second thing is
most of those lenses start at a maximum
aperture of f 3.5 and go up to 5.6 or
6.3
what that number means is that number of
3.5 F 5.6 that's how big the opening is
in the back of the lens that allows the
light through to hit the sensor the
smaller that number the bigger the
opening is it is a little bit confusing
I know and so your kit lens it starts at
F 3.5 when you're zoomed all the way out
and when you zoom in it actually gets
smaller it goes to F 5.6 or F 6.3 that
means that that lens is not going to be
very good in low light conditions it
also means that you're not going to be
able to get a very blurry background
this is a lens that you would use to
replace that kit lens but has the same
versatility of being able to zoom so
this is the Sigma 18 to 50 F 2.8 and the
important thing about this lens is that
it's an F 2.8 aperture at 18 millimeters
and when you zoom into 50 it's still an
F 2.8 aperture right so what you're
going to do is you're going to get that
same versatility that you've got with
your kit lens to be able to zoom in and
out but you're automatically going to
get a more blurry background if that's
what you choose the way you choose to
use the lens set it up 2.8 you get a
blurry background or or and you're going
to get better low light performance so
if if you're after a lens to replace the
kit lens you like having that one lens
that you zoom in and out and have that
versatility but the image quality isn't
good enough then this is the lens for
you because it really is a super
versatile end starting at 18 and going
to 50 and you're going to be able to use
it for portraits walk around photos 18
is a reasonably wide so you've got a bit
of a wide shot so I think if you're
looking for something that is super
versatile and you don't want to be
changing in and out of different lenses
then this could be the lens for you just
keep in mind that you aren't going to
get the same level of background blur
you're not going to get the same level
of low light performance as you would
with one of these other lenses that goes
to F 1.4 that's going to get you that
maximum background blur or that maximum
low light performance and most of the
images that you've seen in professional
photos that you think are really great
they're a lot of them not most of them a
lot of them are shot with lenses like
this that go to F 1.4 now as I said
earlier in the video that Rokinon lens
that Rokinon 12 millimeter up to is
honestly one of my favorite lenses of
all time and it is such a crazy good
Astro lens and I'm just throwing a video
on screen now this is my review of that
lens and what you can use it for when it
comes to astrophotography and if you're
into Astro or if you think you want to
get into it I really suggest you check
out that video
