If you're a teacher and you want to get outĀ of the classroom one of the things that canĀ Ā
keep you stuck in the classroom is not knowingĀ your transferable skills. What's an alternativeĀ Ā
career that you can have outside of the classroomĀ with the skills that you've already developed asĀ Ā
a teacher? What jobs pay the same or even moreĀ than what you earn now without you actually havingĀ Ā
to commit to years and years of extra study? IfĀ this is you please watch this video. Hi my nameĀ Ā
is Karalyn Brown and I'm a Career Coach and I'veĀ helped many teachers change their career and getĀ Ā
fantastic new jobs both inside and outside of theĀ classroom. I'm making this video to show you thatĀ Ā
it really is possible to take what you've doneĀ in the classroom and apply it in the corporateĀ Ā
world in the not-for-profit sector or in theĀ public sector. Hopefully by the end of thisĀ Ā
video you'll have some better ideas about whatĀ your transferable skills are and the confidenceĀ Ā
that you can apply these outside of the schoolĀ environment because I'm going to show you someĀ Ā
people who've done exactly that. They've workedĀ out their transferable skills and they've changedĀ Ā
their careers. But make sure you watch to theĀ end of this video because I've got somethingĀ Ā
to share with you that will help you identifyĀ your transferable skills and fast track yourĀ Ā
career change. So let's get into it shall we.Ā So I went looking on LinkedIn to see if I couldĀ Ā
find teachers who changed their careers intoĀ doing something interesting. I looked at theĀ Ā
transferable skills that they would have takenĀ into their next career. I also looked at whetherĀ Ā
they would have done any study to help them makeĀ that move. Now these are real life examples asĀ Ā
we speak. I'm sure as a teacher you'll appreciateĀ that I'm not going to talk fluffy theory. So let'sĀ Ā
meet the five people I found. Meet TS has goneĀ from teaching in the UK and Malaysia to trainingĀ Ā
and development in Australia. Let's take a lookĀ at her transferable skills. The first role outsideĀ Ā
of the classroom was as education consultant forĀ Electro board and while she doesn't actually stateĀ Ā
what she did in teaching my assessment is thatĀ she directly used her curriculum design skillsĀ Ā
that she gained as a teacher to develop andĀ deliver a range of targeted training modulesĀ Ā
and designing customized learning events andĀ strategies. After this two years stint sheĀ Ā
went on to more implementation roles includingĀ training teachers on new classroom technologyĀ Ā
for the New South Wales Department of EducationĀ and Community. Now the thing to note about TS isĀ Ā
that she's done her qualifications after she madeĀ the move. She's done her prince two in projectĀ Ā
management and Certificate 4 in training andĀ assessment when she's been well into her secondĀ Ā
job outside of teaching. Now the next person IĀ want you to read is J.A who's gone from teachingĀ Ā
to become a project and change manager. So you canĀ see on her LinkedIn profile that a primary focusĀ Ā
of her role as assistant principal was and here'sĀ what she says: my role was focused primarily onĀ Ā
leadership and management of information systemsĀ in support of the curriculum management of theĀ Ā
school. Then she's become a project managerĀ for the Catholic Education body implementingĀ Ā
new technologies in school. So let's take a lookĀ at what formal qualifications she has. She movedĀ Ā
out of the school environment in May 2006 and inĀ 2007 she's done a graduate diploma in organizationĀ Ā
communication. That is she started that after sheĀ started her new job. Now here's a dirty littleĀ Ā
secret about project management. If you thinkĀ this might be a career for you, you can thinkĀ Ā
of anything that you've organized at school thatĀ has a start point and an endpoint as a projectĀ Ā
and describe this as a project on your CV. So I'mĀ talking about things like if you've organized aĀ Ā
school excursion, if you've organized a communityĀ day, if you've organized a new curriculum,Ā Ā
if you've supported technology rollouts, or you'veĀ helped train other teachers in a particular skill,Ā Ā
employers will look upon this seriously as aĀ project and that you've demonstrated projectĀ Ā
management skills if you write it up like this.Ā Describe the purpose of the project, describe theĀ Ā
actions that you took to organize the project,Ā Describe the tools that you use and describe theĀ Ā
impact of the project and then suddenly you've gotĀ a project management example that can go on yourĀ Ā
cv. Let's now meet no who's gone from teachingĀ to become a software engineer he's made a reallyĀ Ā
interesting career so no describes himself as aĀ former teacher turned software engineer. LookingĀ Ā
at his LinkedIn profile he doesn't have a degreeĀ in software engineering. He's done a short courseĀ Ā
boot camping coding with hack reactor and he doesĀ have an analytical bent. He studied a Bachelor ofĀ Ā
Science in economics and he's taught economics atĀ high school. He's made the change into full-timeĀ Ā
coding as a software engineer by highlighting hisĀ coding side hustles on his LinkedIn profile. ButĀ Ā
if you look at this he hasn't spent years andĀ years on these side hustles. He spent only fiveĀ Ā
months on these projects. I love what he said heĀ here. I don't take pride in my expertise in anyĀ Ā
particular subject matter but in my capacity toĀ learn quickly and adapt something that has provenĀ Ā
far more valuable to me in the ever-changingĀ world of tech. I love solving problems thatĀ Ā
require systematic and logical approach and relishĀ opportunities to create eloquent solutions toĀ Ā
daily problems. In coding or software engineeringĀ if you can show your interests and skills in this,Ā Ā
that holds far more weight to employers thanĀ any formal qualifications. Now I love this nextĀ Ā
example meet sdw who's currently a teacher and aĀ flight attendant. It doesn't specifically stateĀ Ā
on her LinkedIn profile the transferableĀ skills she's taken between her two jobs,Ā Ā
but if I was to take an educated guess I'd sayĀ from teaching to flight attending should haveĀ Ā
demonstrated a highly developed communicationĀ skills, an ability to remain calm underĀ Ā
pressure and herd crazy cats in a closedĀ environment. And just one last thing here,Ā Ā
I can't see any any qualifications she would haveĀ done to become a flight attendant on her LinkedInĀ Ā
profile. So let's meet me who's gone from beingĀ a teacher and having a long career as a teacherĀ Ā
to becoming a real estate agent. He said he'sĀ taken his relationship building skills withĀ Ā
small humans and applied them to bigger ones inĀ his new career in real estate. I'm sure also thatĀ Ā
his big classroom presence and communicationĀ skills has helped him with sales presentationsĀ Ā
and he's learned to become a great negotiatorĀ navigating between parents teachers and students.Ā Ā
Qualification wise he hasn't listed these on hisĀ LinkedIn profile however to actually become a realĀ Ā
estate agent in New Zealand where he's from you doĀ need to complete a certificate it takes 17 weeksĀ Ā
or all of four months to do. So I hope you canĀ see that there are plenty of ways that you canĀ Ā
use the skills that you've developed in teachingĀ in a real range of careers outside the classroom.Ā Ā
Now you're probably watching this and thinkingĀ that's great Karalyn how do I apply this to me.Ā Ā
How do I work out what my transferable skillsĀ are and the type of career that I could enjoyĀ Ā
outside teaching and even if I do know this howĀ can I convince an employer that I really want toĀ Ā
change my career and I have those transferableĀ skills? If this is you I've got something forĀ Ā
you. I'm going to be offering a weekend careerĀ change accelerator specifically for teachers.Ā Ā
In just one weekend you'll go from being confusedĀ to confidently taking the steps that you need toĀ Ā
take to change your career and actually finallyĀ making that career change happen. So if you'dĀ Ā
like more information about this I've put a linkĀ in the description below so please do go and checkĀ Ā
it out. And if you like this video, please give itĀ the thumbs up. If you like this video and you wantĀ Ā
to see more like this, please subscribe. ThanksĀ for watching and I'll see you in the next video!
