Transcripts
Hi, welcome to this episode of PracticalĀ Digital Strategies. I'm the host, Guy Cook,Ā Ā
and today we're going to talk about keywords andĀ how they are the compass that drives users to yourĀ Ā
content. So if you've got an intended audience,Ā use the right keywords at the right time, at theĀ Ā
right place, and you'll increase the performance.Ā So to understand keywords, you got to know whatĀ Ā
are keywords and why they're important. Well,Ā they're the things that specific words or phrasesĀ Ā
that internet users type into search engines whenĀ looking for information, products, or services.Ā Ā
Okay. These terms are the compass that will getĀ them there, and so make sure you've done a goodĀ Ā
job of getting important, simple keywords forĀ the users to recognize. There's different typesĀ Ā
of keywords. There's short-tail and long tailĀ keywords, understand the difference in thatĀ Ā
short is like a real broad stroke of the brush orĀ search. Okay. They're highly competitive. So likeĀ Ā
if you do real estate in Kitsap County, you'reĀ going to get a bunch of hits. Okay. On the otherĀ Ā
hand, you can use a long tail keywords and haveĀ a more specific phrase like real estate in KitsapĀ Ā
County located in Bremerton. Okay. That's one ofĀ the communities there. So the long tail is whereĀ Ā
you're going to refine the search term to get moreĀ specific. Maybe it might be as simple as near me.Ā Ā
Now the high competition and low competitionĀ keywords boils down to this. High competitionĀ Ā
keywords are the ones that everybody's usingĀ and there's very little chance of you gettingĀ Ā
success and being in the top of the search engineĀ results because so many people have done it beforeĀ Ā
you. Low competition, that's when you're going toĀ have a balance to achieve. Finding out what theĀ Ā
low competition keyword, maybe something that's aĀ longer tail and has fewer websites tracking that,Ā Ā
then that's the one you want to go for. Have aĀ balance between the high competition keywords andĀ Ā
low competition keywords. And there's the puzzle.Ā Finding out what works. So now you've decided,Ā Ā
well, let's have some keyword research tools. AndĀ these are the top tools for keyword research andĀ Ā
analysis. There's other ones available. If you'veĀ got one, post it in the comments, let us know, andĀ Ā
I'll share it with the community. Right now, theĀ list is Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, SEMrush.Ā Ā
So to respect your time, I'm not going to go intoĀ the great big chapter and verse support documentĀ Ā
for each one of those tools and explain it. YouĀ can go to the YouTube search, use those names, andĀ Ā
get to how to do it and implement that. One thingĀ I should mention too is trends and seasonality.Ā Ā
The impact of trends and seasonality on keywordĀ selection is really important because there'sĀ Ā
times when you want to search for HalloweenĀ costumes and put that into your keywords,Ā Ā
perhaps if that's the niche you're going after.Ā But in January, probably not so much. You're goingĀ Ā
to change and maybe New Year's resolutions or someĀ such. So the tips for leveraging timely keywords,Ā Ā
each one of those engines, those tools that I gaveĀ you the links to, take a look at those and findĀ Ā
out how they suggest to do that. And using thingsĀ like social media platforms and Google Trends,Ā Ā
you can find what's hot and what's not forĀ the niche that you're... One of the thingsĀ Ā
to consider, too, is competitor analysis. It'sĀ important to analyze competitors' keywords becauseĀ Ā
analyzing their keywords helps you identify gapsĀ in their approach, allowing you to capitalize onĀ Ā
untapped opportunities. Maybe they've got realĀ high rankings for certain words, but other wordsĀ Ā
they didn't even use. And using a tool like AhrefsĀ or SEMrush, you can analyze competitor websites,Ā Ā
look at the keywords that they rank for, and thenĀ make adjustments accordingly. So long-term keywordĀ Ā
strategy, that means building a sustainableĀ keyword strategy, importing the knowledgeĀ Ā
that you've got from using tools to analyze theĀ positions in the search engine result pages,Ā Ā
and then make adjustments accordingly. Okay,Ā integrating keywords naturally is the key to theĀ Ā
content working for overstuffing it in a singleĀ element. Not a good idea. I think I've said thatĀ Ā
before. So I'm measuring your success. There areĀ metrics that you want to check that matter. Okay,Ā Ā
the key metrics are search engine rankings,Ā organic traffic, and click-through rate. HowĀ Ā
many times do they perform the call to action?Ā So there's a number of tools out there. I wouldĀ Ā
encourage you to give Google Search Console a try.Ā It's free. It provides good search performanceĀ Ā
indicators. You can use Ahrefs or SEMrushĀ if you've got a budget that can afford such.Ā Ā
Regular review your metrics like every Monday.Ā Take a look and then identify the trends and makeĀ Ā
data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.Ā Well, thanks for listening. I hope that you'reĀ Ā
going to be able to find top-ranking keywords inĀ this effort. It's a long-fought battle, somethingĀ Ā
you can't just do it once and then forget aboutĀ it. You continuously monitor and improve basedĀ Ā
on the data you receive and that's going to makeĀ you ready to do the keyword strategy to the nextĀ Ā
level. So start implementing these tips todayĀ and watch your online visibility soar. Again,Ā Ā
thanks for listening. Hey, to contact me, use theĀ secure contact form on guyrcook.com. If you likeĀ Ā
