play02:03

hi Maria it's a pleasure to have you

play02:06

play02:10

it's very nice to see you we met in

play02:12

Taiwan and I am glad that we can stay in

play02:15

touch while you're back to

play02:18

Indonesia I have to say it's a perfect

play02:21

day for recording because we have a

play02:23

typhoon right now in Taiwan and the

play02:26

government gave everyone one day off so

play02:29

apart from staying at home we have not

play02:32

much uh things to do not many things to

play02:35

do so uh I'm glad to be to be here with

play02:39

you oh nice to hear that I hope you and

play02:42

the other fellows from MOA Taiwan

play02:45

Fellowship are doing good and safe in

play02:48

Taiwan okay let's get Dive Right In can

play02:52

you tell us about your journey in

play02:55

starting a career in

play02:57

journalism what were the biggest

play02:59

challenges you faced as the female

play03:02

journalist I would say that the path

play03:04

that led me to journalism wasn't that

play03:08

straight from the very beginning from my

play03:10

childhood some people know from the very

play03:12

beginning they want to be an astronaut

play03:15

they want to be a a cook I didn't have

play03:19

this very clear idea from until later in

play03:22

my life sure I really liked to spend

play03:26

time with the adults when I was a kid

play03:28

and other kids were playing

play03:30

uh and listen to the political and uh

play03:34

societal

play03:35

discussions but I didn't know that it

play03:39

can change into a career so uh I was

play03:43

interested in international Affairs so I

play03:46

decided that I can study Chinese studies

play03:50

it will immerse me in a whole new world

play03:53

uh a new culture a new language a new

play03:58

tastes a new

play04:00

behaviors um but at the time when I

play04:04

finished the studies I still didn't know

play04:07

what I want to do with that um I did

play04:10

many things after studies I searched for

play04:13

many internship opportunities connected

play04:17

to diplomacy so I did an internship at

play04:21

the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

play04:23

at un migration in Beijing and this is

play04:28

when it start started to lead me to

play04:31

journalism so I had uh uh this

play04:34

internship at un migration in Beijing uh

play04:37

in 2019

play04:40

2020 and this is when it

play04:42

happened uh Co

play04:45

came uh and uh we couldn't go to the

play04:48

office and because I was just an intern

play04:51

they didn't give me any work to do at

play04:54

home so basically I was uh alone in the

play04:58

city not really be able to hang out with

play05:01

friends because it's the epidemic and um

play05:06

I was thinking what I can do with this

play05:08

free time and at the same time many

play05:11

people were asking me oh you're in China

play05:15

um how how is it going because the covid

play05:19

still have hasn't spread to the whole uh

play05:23

world uh and I decided that maybe it's a

play05:27

good opportunity to write an article

play05:31

about how everyday life is in China

play05:34

during

play05:35

covid I know that right now it sounds

play05:38

cliche and not very interesting because

play05:40

we all the whole world went through that

play05:44

so uh that's not something new to us but

play05:48

at the at this time it was quite um

play05:51

interesting for people

play05:53

outside and I decided to propose to a

play05:57

magazine that I like in Poland

play06:00

uh an article that I can write an

play06:02

article about different people and their

play06:06

experience during Co so I just called my

play06:10

friends and asked them some simple

play06:12

questions and it worked this how I

play06:16

published my first article and because I

play06:19

had already one article published uh in

play06:23

one uh good magazine I could publish a

play06:26

second one and then I could publish a

play06:28

third one and and that is how I slowly

play06:31

built up my my

play06:32

portfolio so for anyone who would like

play06:35

to start a career in journalism what I

play06:38

would advise is to build slowly your

play06:43

portfolio you will not get a whole job

play06:46

in journalism straight away um you need

play06:49

to build your portfolio you need to

play06:52

build experience you need to build your

play06:55

uh na uh otherwise you don't really have

play07:01

chances uh to to get a whole job uh a

play07:06

normal regular job in journalism but if

play07:09

you slowly build up your portfolio and

play07:11

it's possible to do even during studies

play07:15

uh your position to get into the market

play07:19

and get a regular job in the field is

play07:22

much uh

play07:24

stronger and regarding the second part

play07:26

of your question about the challenges of

play07:29

being a female in journalism I think

play07:31

they're very similar to being a female

play07:33

and anywhere in the job market uh so

play07:37

even though I already I've been already

play07:40

working in journalism for a few years

play07:43

and I am 29 years old many people see

play07:48

see me as a student uh when they see me

play07:51

oh you look very young oh you're still

play07:54

studying and these are not uh I would

play07:58

say these are not um

play08:00

questions meant to be evil but I know

play08:02

that uh if I look like that to them they

play08:06

don't treat me as seriously as they

play08:09

would uh treat probably my uh male

play08:12

colleague uh but I would say it's fine

play08:15

uh don't get discouraged by that because

play08:18

uh during work it it your your looks uh

play08:22

don't matter that much anymore and if

play08:25

they do then seriously it's their

play08:28

problem not

play08:30

yours okay thank you that is such an

play08:33

inspiring story Maria I think you face

play08:38

uh your challenge in the Life uh very

play08:40

creatively very thoughtful it's just

play08:43

like what people say about the if life

play08:46

gives you lemon then you can make a

play08:49

lemonade and then I think your career as

play08:52

a journalist is your lonate right in

play08:55

your opinion Maria how does gender

play08:58

influence the way a journalist covers

play09:00

the news have you ever experienced bias

play09:04

or discrimination in your work I would

play09:07

say there is quite a big difference

play09:09

between how men and women cover news at

play09:13

my previous office we had daily meetings

play09:15

where we were discussing what articles

play09:17

we are going to write that day and my

play09:20

male colleagues were very much confident

play09:23

about the importance of their own

play09:25

subjects and female were my female

play09:28

colleagues were much more

play09:31

hesitant uh but I would say that being

play09:35

hesitant and being a questioning

play09:39

person um gives you more

play09:43

critical insight into your subject and

play09:48

um makes you a curious person makes you

play09:52

a person that wants to ask questions and

play09:55

that is what journalism is about um

play09:59

while being always very

play10:01

confident uh it can close your mind and

play10:05

close you in one narrative that might be

play10:07

wrong as well so I would say

play10:12

that confidence is of course important

play10:15

and you have to build it but uh but I

play10:20

would say it comes with

play10:22

age but being uh leaving some room for

play10:26

hesitation is very good if you're your a

play10:30

journalist wow I love your point of view

play10:34

Maria and I think it's the same uh with

play10:37

what I face as a lecturer here I'm very

play10:40

glad that I get such an opportunity and

play10:45

um I can explore my potential and I also

play10:49

get some um permission to do the Taiwan

play10:53

Fellowship uh this recently and mat you

play10:57

so we kind of face the same thing and

play11:00

yeah to be hesitant and also what you're

play11:03

saying are really really good and I

play11:06

agree with that based on my observation

play11:10

clickbait has become a part of the

play11:12

modern media landscape uh how do you

play11:15

think clickbait affects the quality and

play11:18

Trust in

play11:19

journalism of course clickbait articles

play11:23

uh are a nightmare for anyone who wants

play11:25

to understand uh the world in all its

play11:28

subtility

play11:29

and all its

play11:31

Shades but I would also say that it has

play11:36

its role in the media

play11:38

landscape media was always also about uh

play11:44

grabbing the attention of the reader uh

play11:48

of the audience and click Bay journalism

play11:51

is not really something

play11:54

new so I wouldn't really fight that uh

play12:00

what I would do is

play12:03

to propose an alternative to enlarge the

play12:07

space of quality

play12:09

journalism I think there is a very big

play12:11

demand in the last few years for

play12:13

factchecking websites also because of

play12:16

the rise of clickbait Journalism people

play12:19

want to know what is the truth what is

play12:21

not there is definitely demand for

play12:24

longer

play12:25

pieces um even I saw some statistics

play12:29

like last year that the uh the that the

play12:32

number of books read yearly by Polish

play12:35

people is on the rise so it goes

play12:39

counterintuitively we think that the

play12:41

world is uh much faster and we only want

play12:44

to uh read faster news and to some

play12:48

extent it's true but to some extent it

play12:51

leaves

play12:52

space

play12:54

uh it gives it it creates a demand for

play12:59

longer

play13:00

forms uh and I think this is what anyone

play13:04

interested in promoting

play13:07

quality um journalism can do there is no

play13:12

point of uh fighting clickbait uh what

play13:15

is important to enlarge the space for

play13:20

Quality okay enlarge the space of

play13:22

quality right you're amazing that's

play13:25

amazing

play13:26

statement um according to you you how

play13:29

has your experience working in different

play13:32

countries and international

play13:34

organizations shaped your perspective on

play13:37

journalism and News

play13:40

integrity uh working in different

play13:42

countries and different cultural

play13:44

environments has definitely widened my

play13:48

horizons uh and I think it's especially

play13:51

important to uh

play13:53

journalists uh because we explain in a

play13:57

way their reality so we should be more

play14:02

um accurate more empathetic in uh

play14:06

describing the world uh but people often

play14:12

use their own perspective their own

play14:15

values their own

play14:17

priorities and impose it on other people

play14:22

so I have a I have a good example that

play14:24

illustrates that uh how imposing that

play14:28

can be a cognitive

play14:29

Trum um in

play14:32

2022 or 23 there were big protests in

play14:36

China against the

play14:38

restrictive um covid lockdowns much more

play14:42

restrictive than in other parts of the

play14:44

world uh they happened in many cities

play14:47

and governed people from different

play14:50

backgrounds and um the reaction to that

play14:54

in Western media was that it is going to

play14:57

be the next Revolution it is going to

play15:00

change the systematic trajectory of

play15:03

China uh and this kind of uh hopeful uh

play15:08

headlines for plenty in

play15:10

media um but of course as we know it

play15:13

didn't really change much uh and even

play15:18

though we don't know maybe it planted

play15:21

some seed of rebellion that will um grow

play15:26

in the future for now we don't have any

play15:28

proof for that uh so living abroad has

play15:33

definitely uh taught me that in order to

play15:38

accurately convey the uh situation in

play15:44

other countries um you have to kind of

play15:48

get in the mind of of people who live

play15:51

there and not impose our own uh beliefs

play15:55

on that because this is um just bad

play15:58

journalist

play15:59

may I ask further can you share an

play16:02

example of an experience where you had

play16:05

to face pressure to create attention

play16:07

grabbing use versus maintaining truth

play16:10

and

play16:11

integrity yes I have a good example of

play16:15

uh how you can do something that's

play16:17

equally attention grabbing but also uh

play16:21

preserves uh the quality of

play16:25

Journalism uh so I was asked by my

play16:28

editor to write about the China's role

play16:33

in the Fantan crisis in the United

play16:36

States uh you know fentel is this very

play16:40

powerful drug uh and

play16:43

opioid um that is the main cause of the

play16:47

death of young people in the USA so it's

play16:50

a very very big societal problem and

play16:54

there have been some reports that um

play16:58

China plays a big role in that because

play17:01

it produces the chemical uh that are

play17:03

used in uh in producing the

play17:08

drug some even say that China does that

play17:11

on purpose that it uses fentel as a tool

play17:16

to undermine the United

play17:19

States some publicists even say that it

play17:23

is a revenge for the Opium wors in China

play17:26

in the 19th century

play17:29

so I had big hesitations about whether I

play17:34

should write a piece about it or not

play17:38

because I didn't want to just repeat a

play17:42

narrative present in Western media while

play17:46

I wasn't sure if that's really the

play17:51

case so when I was writing the piece I

play17:54

discovered that yes China does produce

play17:56

the chemicals used uh in synthesizing

play18:00

the

play18:01

drugs but those

play18:04

um chemicals are also used to produce

play18:08

such simple uh medicaments as um pills

play18:13

for allergy or pills for

play18:16

diarrhea so the narrative that China

play18:19

produces chemicals for fentel is much

play18:22

more blurry and uh and much more nuanced

play18:27

uh than what I previously read in uh in

play18:32

media

play18:33

so what I learned from that is that you

play18:37

shouldn't really Escape controversial

play18:39

topics because anyway people will read

play18:43

about them uh and they maybe the topic

play18:48

might seem as uh attention grubbing and

play18:53

a cheap topic but uh when writing a

play18:57

piece you can disc cover um that the

play19:02

reality is much more um nuan and much

play19:06

more complicated and that's fine you can

play19:09

also write about this um so I would say

play19:14

don't avoid attention grabbing

play19:18

headlines uh just um

play19:23

write so that you feel you can feel

play19:26

Integrity when you finish the article

play19:28

wow amazing I really like um how you

play19:33

deal with the controversial topic Maria

play19:36

I think it could be an example good

play19:39

example or maybe tips for the other

play19:42

journalists in Indonesia not only for

play19:45

women but also for men in general thank

play19:49

you very much for uh sharing that

play19:53

experience okay Maria next one how do

play19:56

you see the future of Journal ISM in

play19:59

this digital age are you optimistic

play20:02

about the industry's ability to overcome

play20:04

the challenges of clickbait for me

play20:07

myself as a lecturer and also the former

play20:10

journalist I think I am more critical

play20:13

than optimistic actually because uh I

play20:16

can still see the bright future of the

play20:18

journalism in the digital age but I

play20:21

still need to criticize how the

play20:23

journalist try to lure the audience or

play20:27

the readers to read by making such

play20:29

clickbait for their

play20:32

news I am not a pessimist and I would

play20:35

say that the future of uh media is

play20:39

bright uh maybe I'm not an optimistic

play20:42

either but I wouldn't uh I am definitely

play20:46

not a person who sees um um the future

play20:50

in very dark colors because we have

play20:53

proof that the modern technology really

play20:56

allowed uh media to to flourish one

play21:00

example is podcast where you can have

play21:02

in-depth uh discussion invite experts

play21:06

and this is a very good example of of of

play21:09

of uh qu of quality journalism uh a

play21:13

second example is uh newsletters um many

play21:18

people who are doing podcasts are also

play21:20

doing newsletters and it allows you to

play21:23

have uh

play21:25

customized um emails about the top that

play21:29

interests you um I myself am an a it

play21:34

redit Reader this is a confession and I

play21:37

think it's really great uh when I

play21:40

entered Reddit I at first I thought it's

play21:42

going to be this aggressive Anonymous

play21:46

environment but uh I really actually

play21:49

recommend it to everyone uh you can have

play21:52

very nerdy questions and connect with

play21:55

other nerds uh and it is fantastic it is

play21:58

also a form of media a media where that

play22:01

people participate in creating it's

play22:05

really really cool um so but of course

play22:09

there are dangers of of of technology

play22:12

and we can see it on Twitter where where

play22:15

AI pictures looks look almost uh real to

play22:19

us and we are young and still it's

play22:23

difficult for us to discern a an AI

play22:26

picture from a real picture so you can

play22:28

imagine imagine how an old person is uh

play22:30

lost in this landscape uh but this is an

play22:35

area for regulators and we definitely

play22:38

need a lot a lot a lot more regulations

play22:41

and this will be a problem of course

play22:44

because um technology makes progression

play22:48

uh much faster than than Regulators do

play22:53

uh so this is a thing a big challenge

play22:56

for the years ahead

play22:59

yeah I agree that it is challenging and

play23:02

we need more regulation anyways I was

play23:05

not really related to the redit reading

play23:09

thing because I think it is forbidden in

play23:11

Indonesia so yeah I'm curious actually

play23:14

though okay next one I think it is also

play23:18

the last question from me um what is the

play23:22

significant role of Journalism in

play23:25

empowering women and how can we Ure more

play23:28

women are involved in this

play23:32

industry as I said before I think women

play23:35

have a lot of qualities that are very

play23:38

important in journalism like um having a

play23:41

critical mind and um uh and being a

play23:45

person who is questioning the world uh

play23:49

so I think that women have a big big

play23:52

role to play in journalism I don't know

play23:55

how it is in Indonesia but I know for

play23:57

example in Poland there is a problem of

play24:01

inviting uh women experts to radio shows

play24:04

or TV programs that if a host invites a

play24:08

woman um a high chance is that she will

play24:12

reject the invitation because she will

play24:15

fear that she's not good enough for this

play24:18

program while from what I hear it

play24:22

doesn't uh happen often uh to men who

play24:26

who are invited to the programs so they

play24:28

just jump at the first occasion to uh to

play24:32

be in the

play24:33

media uh so there is a big confidence

play24:37

problem among women and um I plad guilty

play24:42

as well uh I think I need uh to work on

play24:47

my confidence uh a lot um and I think

play24:52

what always helps me to build it up is

play24:57

to speak with other women who are uh

play25:00

more experienced than me and who tell me

play25:04

about their own struggles uh with um

play25:09

with their careers and how they uh how

play25:15

was the path that led them to being to

play25:19

be such a beautiful accomplished person

play25:23

that it wasn't always like that um that

play25:26

it you they weren't always is confident

play25:29

um and good speakers that this is

play25:32

something uh they they buildt up so I

play25:36

think that uh women solidarity and women

play25:39

sharing experience between each other is

play25:43

very important to encourage um young

play25:47

people uh especially uh young women wow

play25:52

thank you I think woman solidarity

play25:55

that's the key wordss right Maria

play25:58

okay thank you so much Maria for sharing
