title as an actual project manager as

long as you can demonstrate experience

leading all stages of the project

so a little bit about myself i'm an

engineer turned project manager who

graduated with my engineering degree

from the university of california san

diego in 2020 i passed my cap m exam and

i was able to transition from

engineering directly into project

management since then i've been able to

build up all of my years of experience

in order to take the qualify for the pmp

exam

alright so i finally submitted my

application to pmi and after waiting

about a week it finally got approved by

pmi you will not believe how stressed

out how nervous and anxious i was

wondering if i would get audited or not

but luckily i was successful oh and

guess what just arrived you won't

believe it but i just received the

latest pmbok 7th edition the agile

practice guide and this book by kenneth

rubin called the central scrum i've also

just ordered cornelius fitchner's pnp

exam simulator and i decided to stick to

a 30 day study plan for taking my pmp

exam ever since i found out that the pmp

exam covers a mixture of the predictive

agile and hybrid approach i've decided

to really buckle down and master the

core fundamentals and concepts in agile

so i'm going to really spend the next

few weeks really just understanding

agile and referencing my agile practice

guide

tip number one

read through the entire exam content

outline and familiarize yourself with

everything that's listed inside the pmp

exam is structured based off of three

domains forty two percent on people

fifty percent of process and only eight

percent on the business environment as

noted in pmi's exam content outline half

of your exam is intended to test a

predictive approach and the other half

on the agile and hybrid approach so

understand what exactly you'll be tested

on and what the layout of your exam will

be keep in mind that the pmp exam is

meant to test the best practices of

project management with questions based

on your practical experience leading and

directing projects i encourage you to

read pages 4 to 10 of the exam content

outline and to familiarize yourself with

each of these tasks and the work

associated with each again print this

out and read it cover to cover since the

pmp exam covers a much stronger emphasis

on agile and hybrid make sure you

understand how this applies in

situational based questions for the

predictive and the agile approaches

week one is officially over and i now

have five more weeks left in my exam

study plan i've spent the past few days

brushing up on the basics of the

predictive and the agile approach using

joseph phillips pmp exam prep course

from udemy a big concern that i do have

is that i don't have a ton of experience

leading out of projects and so i'm

viewing this as an opportunity to

broaden my experience and my skill set

so that i can become a much more

well-versed project manager and become a

certified project management

professional tip number two familiarize

yourself with the timing and the layout

of your exam you need to develop a game

plan for how you're going to pace

yourself and answer the questions on the

day of your exam take it from my own

personal experience but you do not want

to be blindsided and realize that you

only have 30 minutes left to answer 60

questions as pmi lists on the website

your exam consists of 180 questions and

you're given 230 minutes which is

roughly four hours to complete the

entire exam but you're given two

10-minute breaks after each batch of 60

questions so what this means is that

after you complete your first 60

questions you're given a 10-minute break

and after you complete the next set of

60 questions you'll also be given

another 10 minute break but keep in mind

that once you complete each set of 60

questions you are not allowed to go back

and review that set of questions so

here's the trick and my own personal

words of advice do not focus too much of

your time on the first 60 questions you

need to maintain a pace of about one

minute per question so that way you have

enough time to answer all questions and

then you can go back and review your

first set of 60 questions take a 10

minute break and repeat this for the

remaining batches in other words view

each batch of 60 questions kind of like

a sprint

all right so it's three weeks into my

studying journey and studying has been

going really well it can feel like

there's so much information to learn and

understand but i know that if i stick to

my study plan i can do this tip number

three focus on mastering the fundamental

concepts in agile there are only three

references that i recommend that you

read cover to cover and they are the

agile practice guide the scrum guide as

well as the agile manifesto if you're

like me and you don't have a ton of

experience leading agile projects you

need to master the fundamentals of agile

focus your first two weeks studying the

agile process as it relates to scrum

what are the different roles and

responsibilities in the scrum team can

you tell me what the difference is

between a product owner a scrum master

and a development team can you tell me

what the difference is between the

product backlog and the sprint backlog

and what the different events in the

scrum process are the agile practice

guide will be a completely invaluable

resource to you and i recommend that you

supplement this by reading the agile

manifesto and the scrum guide to dive

deeper into the various agile and scrum

concepts so if you're like me and you're

a complete beginner in agile essential

scrum is a great reference book to have

handy if this is your first time

learning agile as it walks you step by

step through the scrum ceremonies the

artifacts and the overall process

hey everyone i just finished week four

and i'm starting week five of my

studying journey i can finally

confidently say that i have a strong

grasp and understanding of both the

predictive and the agile approach i'm

starting to practice daily quizzes and

i'm getting the feel and the hang of how

to apply exactly what i've learned to

solve these different scenario-based

situational questions and so i'm in a

really great spot to ramp up my studying

and take practice exam simulators so

wish me good luck tip number four you

need to carve out time to practice

practice and practice you need to

establish a daily habit of practicing a

minimum of five to ten practice

questions every single day it's not

enough to just memorize everything that

you've learned from agile and predictive

you need to spend and dedicate time to

apply what exactly you've learned and

understand how to solve the situation

based questions that will truly set you

up for success on the day of your exam

remember the exam is testing your

ability to think logically and

critically not to reset the definitions

of processes or key vocabulary when you

see questions that ask you what should

you do or what should you do next put

yourself into that scenario and think to

yourself if i was the project manager in

this situation and if i was following

all best practices as an ideal project

manager how would i respond in order to

keep the project moving forward this is

an approach that i've used to answer so

many questions on the exam and it helps

even more when you practice this mindset

when you solve practice questions

it's officially week six and i just got

back from having korean food for lunch

i'm a huge proponent of taking breaks

and using that time to really

re-energize and refocus your mind so as

an update from me i'm scheduled to take

my pnp exam for later this week i just

took my last exam simulator and i scored

about 86 percent and you won't believe

it but my scores literally increased

from 75 percentage all the way up to 86

and so i feel very confident going into

this exam so wish me good luck and let's
