hi guys i'm teacher luke an expert
duolingo english test teacher
and today we're going to talk about the
choose the real english word question
type
this question type is also known as yes
no vocabulary
and it's simple your job is to just
select the real english words
however i know many students struggle
with this question type
because even though the task itself is
simple doing it well
is quite difficult so in this video i'm
going to talk about some of the key
points of this question type
then i'm going to give you some tips and
at the end i've prepared
10 sample tests for you but before i
start
as always if you think this video is
helpful please give it a thumbs up
and subscribe it really does help me a
lot and you can get my ppt file
my notes and some extra worksheets when
you become a member of my channel
so let's get started by looking at the
key points of this question type
so first and foremost your job is to
choose the real english words out of a
list you're presented with
real here means words that have real
meaning in english
and even though this task might seem
easy it's really tricky because a lot of
these
fake words they look like real words
so your job is to look through them all
and just
select the real english words and there
are two types of this question on the
test
type one is read and choose where your
job is to read
all of the words presented to you and
choose the real ones
whereas on type 2 your job is to listen
and choose
of course in this one you have to listen
to some words being spoken out loud
and choose which ones are real for the
type 1 you get 60 seconds to complete it
and for the type 2 you have 90 seconds
and you'll get each of these question
types between
three and seven times in the test so be
prepared that you will have to do this
question type many times
throughout the test so those were some
of the key points of this question type
it's also important to know that the
type 1 question type the read and choose
contributes towards your literacy and
comprehension sub scores
whereas the type 2 question type
contributes towards your conversation
and comprehension sub scores so all in
all this question type is a really big
part of this duolingo test so in my
opinion it's pretty important that
you're able to do it well
but how can you do it well well now
let's take a look at some really useful
tips to help you study
and actually do this question type well
so my first tip is to make sure that you
read or listen to the words multiple
times
a lot of the words that are presented to
you are quite confusing
so take your time read them or listen to
them carefully and make sure you select
the real english words
my next tip is to watch out for some
spelling mistakes
now i don't believe that the duolingo
english test is trying to trick you
but a lot of the words that are
presented to you look
very much like english words but they're
not because they're spelt wrongly
for example this word here of course is
a real english word
it is check and the end spelling is
ck however when you take the test it
might be presented like this
ch e k which of course is wrong that's
not a real english word
so watch out for spelling mistakes next
watch out for incorrect forms this is
another thing that i've noticed on the
test
for example the word sleep the past
tense form
is slept however on the test if they say
sleep it or they spell it like
s-l-e-e-p-e-d
then of course that is wrong my last tip
is a really simple one but i think it's
really important
and that is simply don't guess the way
the
unreal words are presented they look
just like
english words because the spelling and
pronunciations are a part of the english
spelling and pronunciation rules
so it actually is impossible just to
guess
they all could be english words but some
of them are not
so my advice is that you only choose the
words that you
know for sure are real it's impossible
to
guess so those were some useful tips to
help you on test day
to do this question type well but how
can you study and prepare for this
question type
well simply you just have to improve
your vocabulary but how can you do that
efficiently well i have a few little
tips for you
so here are some tips to help you study
my first tip i think is the most
important but it might be the most
time consuming and that is to read
reading
is the best way to improve your
vocabulary so i suggest you read things
like
newspaper articles blog posts
non-fiction and fiction books as well
reading will definitely help you to
improve your vocabulary
however i do understand that that is
quite time consuming and
is a more long-term plan so how can you
study in the short term
well i recommend you look at some really
official word lists
you can find some examples in the
description below i must say that these
lists
are not from the duolingo english test
so i can't guarantee that these words
will be on the test
however the lists below are frequency
lists made by official dictionaries like
the oxford dictionary so i think you'll
find it very valuable to look over
all of those words in the lists and my
third point is to make sure that you
listen to the pronunciation
of course type two of this question type
is to listen
and choose that's pretty different than
reading and choosing
because quite often english spelling and
english pronunciation
don't match so i recommend that when you
learn a new word
you listen to how it's pronounced but
how can you do this
well you can visit some really good
dictionaries like the
oxfordlearnersdictionary.com
on this dictionary it has the
pronunciation both in american and
in british english this will definitely
help you to improve your listening
skills
for this question type okay so those
were some of my key points and tips to
help you do this question type as well
as you can
now it's your turn to practice this
question type i've prepared 10 sample
tests for you
for the read and choose question type so
type one of this i'll make the listen
and choose question types next
so be sure to subscribe to this channel
so you get that video in your feed
next week so let's get started i'll give
you one minute
to do this just like in the real test
and then i'll show you the answers
i think this is going to be really
useful study material for you
and please let me know what you think of
it in the comments below
did you find it easy was it so so or was
it very difficult
let me know okay well let's get started
good luck and don't forget to use my
tips
before we start test number three if you

up and subscribe to this channel
