In life, at times we are faced with

a question that cannot be answered.

We go through moments of difficulties and suffering.

We ask, "Why?"

But we know oftentimes, we don't have answer

for any of the questions that is raised, "Why."

But Jesus gives us hope through the Scriptures of today,

where he invites us to prepare ourselves for the kingdom.

Let us ask God's mercy and pardon

for the moments of our failures.

"The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone

"who sowed good seed in his field.

"But while everybody was asleep, an enemy came

"and sowed weeds among the wheat,

"So when the plants came up and bore grain,

"then the weeds appeared as well.

"The slaves of the householder came and said to him,

"'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?

"Where, then, did these weeds come from?'

"He answered, 'An enemy has done this.'

"'Then do you want us to go and gather them?'

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

I heard an incident from a priest friend

who talked to me about a mother who came to see him.

She was a single mother who had lost her job.

She seems to have missed too many workdays

when her kids were too sick

to attend daycare.

Without income, she couldn't pay her bills

and was worried that her utilities would be shut off

or she would be evicted from her home.

On top of that, her car had broken down

and she had no money for repairs.

Without a car, she couldn't look for a new job.

One thing had piled on top of another

until she was overwhelmed with hardships.

She felt like world was out to get her.

She seemed to have asked my friend,

"How can God let this happen?

What have I done to deserve this?"

One of the age-old questions that has plagued the human mind,

generation after generation,

is "Why does God let bad things happen to good people?"

Maybe have wondered this yourself,

or you know someone who has.

I get it often from people who are looking for help

when they have reached the end of their rope,

when it seems like life has dealt them more trouble

than anyone deserves.

It's a fair question,

given the adversities

that people go through,

particularly children in war-torn places.

What did they do wrong?

Why are they forced to see suffering,

destruction and death all around them?

How could evil coexist in the world?

As hard as it is, today's Gospel gives a glimpse of hope

to the troubled hearts and minds of us.

The people who gathered to hear Jesus

tell them the stories

weren't too much different.

They had experienced oppression from Rome.

Even among their own people,

they had watched the rich get richer

as the poor get poorer.

Life was unfair.

How could God allow his people, the chosen race,

to continue to suffer

while evil seemed to flourish around them?

When would the Messiah deliver them

from their miserable existence

and bring judgment to Israel's oppressors?

There are many ways to interpret

the parable of the weeds and the wheat.

At its most basic level,

this story might be about how difficult it is

to tell weeds from the wheat.

If you have some experience of working in the garden,

we know how difficult it is at times

to distinguish between the flower plants

that we have planted

and the weeds that come along.

Sometimes, what we thought to be a weed

turns out to be a good plant,

and other times, what we thought to be a good plant

turns out to be a weed.

And we heard that pulling weeds

can cause more harm than good,

destroying the very crops we want to harvest.

But this story is probably more

than just our farming tip for weed control.

If you continue to read the Gospel,

the disciples ask for an explanation

once they are alone with Jesus,

and he spells out the metaphors that matter,

identifying the main characters in this story.

This story is more about the kingdom of heaven.

Though good and evil coexist, at the end of the age,

we will be treated according to our merits.

We are not called to be judges of good and evil,

and that is not the work of us, but God.

We might remember when Jesus taught about loving your enemies

and praying for those who persecute you.

He adds,

"So that you may be children of your Father in heaven,

"for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good,

and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous."

This is good news.

Who doesn't want to have a second chance?

For surely, we can't change ourselves

from weeds to be wheat

any more than we can change ourselves

from rocky, thorny ground into good soil.

But Jesus can.

This is merely a parable

that we cannot take it a literal sense,

but it conveys God's abundant mercy

and gives each of us

a chance to be part of that kingdom of heaven.

Jesus invites us to turn away from a scarcity mindset

into Christ abundance;

away from focusing on getting what we want

toward receiving the infinite grace

and forgiveness God offers each of us in Christ.

The kingdom of God is becoming. It is a process.

It's not a place. It's a process. It's a being.

It comes with grace and blessings.

We are challenged to embrace God's plan

in the midst of our chaos.

At the end of this parable, Jesus would say,

"Let anyone with ears listen!"

That is a call for you, and that's a call for me.

In this parable, we, each of us, are invited

to see that at times, we can have--

We can be both wheat and weed through our behaviours,

through our choices that we make.

But the invitation is clear

that Jesus is giving this parable

in response to what a kingdom of God is,

kingdom of heaven is.

That both evil and good coexist, but at the end of the day,

we will be treated according to our deeds.

So, dear brothers and sisters,

the invitation remains to listen to his words,

to proclaim what we hear

and to practise what we believe.

Let us bring forth our prayers and petitions.

We pray for ourselves,

that we may not become judges to our brothers and sisters

but rather, give them a second chance,

allowing them to experience God's goodness, God's grace.

We pray to the Lord.

We continue to pray for family members and friends

who are fallen away from faith,

particularly because of what others have said and did,

that they may know the choices and the chances

that God always presents to them.

We pray to the Lord.

particularly the families who are broken,

who are going through difficulties,

who have the answer-- Or are asking a question, "Why?"
