Q & A

Highlights
The Islamic University of Medina faces a dropout rate of approximately 70%, despite offering significant opportunities such as Quran memorization and learning the Sunnah.
Many students have high expectations of studying 10-12 hours a day, but fail to maintain this due to lack of discipline and preparation.
Family responsibilities, including financial and emotional support, are a major reason why many students drop out.
Students often lack the support system they had back home, such as parents, siblings, and friends, which affects their emotional well-being.
Some students are not used to taking care of themselves independently, including cooking and cleaning, which becomes a challenge.
The lifestyle change from a high standard of living to more modest dormitories can be a deterrent for some students.
The extreme heat in Medina, with temperatures reaching 46 degrees Celsius, poses a significant challenge for many students.
Concerns from parents about their children studying in Saudi Arabia, fearing extremism or simply missing them, lead to students dropping out.
Students worry about their future career prospects and job experience, fearing they won't be able to prepare for work life while studying for six years.
The spiritual and educational benefits of studying in Medina are immense, including praying in the Prophet's Mosque and learning from Islamic scholars.
Despite the challenges, students are encouraged to hold on to this unique opportunity and not to take it lightly.
The transcript emphasizes the need for respect and support for those seeking knowledge, as it requires discipline and fortitude.
Many students who drop out regret their decision later, realizing the lost opportunity to benefit themselves and others.
The transcript advises potential students to be aware of these challenges and prepare themselves mentally and emotionally before enrolling.
It highlights the importance of prioritizing the hereafter (Akhirah) over worldly life, as emphasized in Islamic teachings.
Transcripts
my name is maddie and i am a student of
the islamic university of medina
and today i want to talk about a
delicate topic
which is why approximately 70 percent of
the students do not finish their studies
in the islamic university of medina and
many people get surprised about it when
they hear about that they say
isn't it a beautiful a brilliant
opportunity to memorize quran
to learn the sunnah of the prophet
sallallahu alaihi sallallahu to guard
umrah every time you want because mecca
is near
or just a beautiful opportunity to seek
knowledge so you could benefit other
muslims and of course that's all true
that's a beautiful opportunity that's
like
a jackpot of all time
but at the same time there are certain
obstacles that a lot of people when they
want to study to enroll islamic
university have no idea of they don't
take these obstacles into consideration
and in the end we have approximately 70
of the students
dropping out of the university before
they get their bachelor degree and i
want to talk about this topic and
basically there are two reasons why i
decided to talk about this delicate
topic the first reason is
so people would know in advance what
kind of obstacle they would face here
while studying
and maybe it will help them prepare for
studying
even before they get enrolled or maybe
some people think like okay these are
obstacles of a serious nature and i
can't study
so these resources wouldn't be wasted in
in wayne so that's the first reason so
people would know in advance what they
are about to face here because it's not
that easy if it was easy we would have
100
graduates and
that would be beautiful but we don't
find it therefore of course they're
obstacles and they are sometimes hard to
deal with and i want people to know
about it and the second reason
the second reason why i'm talking about
it
i want to show that seeking knowledge is
not easy and therefore people who
seek knowledge whether it be in medina
or in other countries
they deserve respect and support from
people even if just if it's just a kind
word so that's the second reason i want
to
show you that
people of knowledge are people of
discipline
and fortitude and therefore they deserve
respect
from other muslims
and without further ado let's get
started with the reasons why people do
not finish their studies in islamic
university even though that's a
one once in a life opportunity and i
made a list about these reasons there
are 10 not 10 but nine reasons on my
list and i'm going to list them and i'm
going to put them in the
description of the video
so the first reason and in my opinion
that's the biggest
reason is that a lot of people who
enroll the islamic university they have
two high expectations of themselves
they think okay i'm gonna go to islamic
university
i'm gonna be available for studying all
day long i'm gonna be surrounded by
students of knowledge i'm gonna be
surrounded by scholars of islam i'm
going to be studying in the prophet's
mosque so of course i'm going to study
every day for 10 12 hours a lot of
students who enrolled islamic university
have these high expectations what these
people do not take into into
consideration that you have to have a
lot of discipline to study 10 12 hours a
day it takes preparation and when they
come over they start studying
and maybe first days they have a lot of
step a lot of energy a lot of excitement
to do that but
some time later this excitement comes
off
and they find themselves that they
cannot study 10 hours a day or may even
eight hours a day they can study maybe
two hours or three hours and they they
get tired and then they
waste the rest of the time
and why is it so bad because they had
high expectations they thought that they
would memorize quran within a year they
thought that they would
memorize a thousand ahadith but they do
not because they cannot do that nobody
can do that
right
right in the beginning
and they start feeling sad they start
feeling down they start feeling
depressed
they start thinking that maybe i'm not
fit for sinking knowledge and
of course when
it takes a hit on their emotional state
it affects their
studying they want to just
drop out of the university thinking that
they are not suitable for this position
and
that's in my opinion this the first
reason that people have
high expectations of themselves and they
can't fulfill that
and they
start feeling down
and it affects
greatly on their emotional state
the second reason it has something to do
with their
family situation
i mean if they are married and they have
wife and kids
they
have to support for them provide for
them firstly financially and emotionally
and if they are not able to do that
a lot of students drop out of the
university and
it's a it's not a surprise because
if your family
cannot do not have
money to
to
meet their needs
of course the student will be worried he
won't be able to focus on the study
and that's what happened many times i
remember there was a story about one
brother who
enrolled at the university in 2000 in
the beginning of 2000
and his family stayed in america and at
some point they ran out of money and
he took an advice from the scholar
he was studying he was teaching
in the masjid of the university back
then now he's teaching in the prophet's
mosque
and the scholar told him that
it's upon you firstly to provide for
your family
so it's uh it only makes sense that you
drop out of the islamic university and
go back to your country to provide for
your family but alhamdulillah he had a
happy and
some other brothers helped him bring his
family to saudi arabia
but still there are many students who do
not have this help for people and they
have to provide for their family and if
they can't do that here in the islamic
university and they cannot provide for
them financially they get back to their
country
and drop out of the university
and that's what what's happened many
times
and sometimes it's not even about
finances it's about
emotional state as one brother
who was my classmate from russia he told
me that
even if you are such a tiger and you can
leave without your family no far from
them
it doesn't mean that they don't need you
still they need emotional support from
you from you
as a father as a head of the family so
that's a
family issue i wouldn't say that it's an
issue but
let's say that these family needs
uh is the reason why a lot of people
uh left studying in the islamic
university and
there is another problem that you can't
bring your family to saudi arabia unless
you finish the second semester of the
faculty
before that you can't bring your family
just for three months under a tourist
visa but that's that
only after the second semester of the
faculty you can be your family you have
to pay
a deposit and there are certain there is
a procedure
but before that you can bring your
family and therefore of course many
students
have to leave their study so that's the
second reason the third reason is that
your even if you are not married still
your parents your siblings your friends
they stay back in your country because
it's something that a lot of people
don't appreciate when you have parents
your family your friends near you
they all they always get some support
from them and it's something that you
don't appreciate until you lose it and
when they come over and they face
certain hardship they don't have this
support near them without these supports
a lot of people just go down and they
start thinking oh maybe i should go back
home because i'm a domestic type
so that's the fourth reason that they
they
lack this support
and the fifth reason is that some people
they lack self-sufficiency
they're not used to take care of himself
cook for him you know
wash the his clothes and all other stuff
and then all of a sudden he comes over
to islamic university and he has to take
care of himself
fuller's full responsibility some people
don't take that well
i i saw a brother from from russia if
i'm not mistaken
and his brother
refused to to
enroll at the islamic university because
he was a very domestic type he he's not
used to being far from his family and he
is not used to
as his brother said he's not used to
independent life
so that's another reason why
students do not finish their studies
the sixth or the seventh
okay just the next reason is that some
people they are used to
uh high level lifestyle
there is just an example um when i
enrolled at the islamic university i met
a brother
and he told me that hey there is a
student who came over
from i'm not sure if it was from
switzerland or from some other country
but from a very rich country and he got
an old dormitory
you know from old buildings and he saw
that room that had bad lighting maybe it
was narrow and he said hey
we have prisons that are better than
this
dormitory that i'm provided with and he
just turned around and
eventually got back to his country
without even starting the education
so that's another reason why
some people
do not just do not finish their studies
do not even start
yeah that's another reason unfortunately
unfortunately because so pamela just
think about it you are in medina you
have
so many ways to
have so up have good deeds to have
something prepared for your hereafter
you can learn this deen you can pray in
the prophet's mouth you can go to mecca
for umrah
you can study with scholars of islam
even if you have to
deal with certain
just little issues like maybe your room
is not
good enough for you is it really a
problem
of course it's not a problem
in the scale that you get so much by
being here but
this is an issue an issue of people's
heart some people
do not have this strong iman and when it
comes to dunya to this worldly life
unfortunately some people prefer this
for their life over their eternal life
the seventh reason is that the climate
is very hot right now it's june and it's
plus 46 celsius degrees
it's really hot and some people do not
like it and some people
take it really badly
just the other day i met a brother who
had some issues with his health because
his
blood pressure was
he was going up and down
and he's really waiting to get back to
his country to get some treatment and
there is another reason
that i haven't mentioned yet
it has something to do with the parents
and again i've seen that happening many
times playing out right in front of me
that some
parents are concerned for their kids and
they when they hear that he goes to
saudi arabia to the middle east
to study
islam
they freak out they think oh he's going
to get back at cherries he's going to
get back
being an extremist and
this is especially an issue i don't know
how it's in
in europe in north america maybe in
india but in for example in my country a
lot of people
have concerns about it i'm from
kazakhstan and
sometimes they just don't let their kids
go to saudi arabia and sometimes it's
just an issue that they miss their kids
and they don't want to let go of their
kids so it's either they are afraid
for their kids or they just don't want
to let go of them because they miss them
and just just yesterday just yesterday
one brother who i love for the sake of
allah he's a diligent hard-working
student he's such a nice brother
i love him for the sake of allah and
he came over to me
and he said hey you remember that i told
you that i'm going to take an academic
leave for one year i said yeah i
remember that
and he said
well
it has something to do with my parents
but most likely i won't be able to get
back even after the academic leave
i was like oh so panel why is it so
and
i felt really
really sad about it because
we'll have the luxury of wasting these
resources this time especially when you
see a student who is hard-working who is
such a nice brother
and we you see that you feel feel sad
and that's what i felt
but i came from the culture we don't
show much emotions so i was like hey
what happened why is it so
and he said well it has something to do
with my parents there are certain
circumstances but i want i want just to
say that i love you for the sake of
allah
and i hope we will get in touch
i said i said oh yeah of course just
make dua to allah maybe allah will
facilitate things for you and you will
be able to keep studying
and that's what i genuinely wish for him
and when we split it up i felt so sad
just yesterday
you won't
beautiful brothers who are studying who
want to benefit this islamic ummah you
want them to study to the end
but there are circumstances as i told
you that
are out of our power
just like with his brother
his circumstances with his parents is
out of his power
that's another reason why people have to
leave studying in the islamic university
it's it really breaks my heart when i
see these kind of situations
but
anyways it's all
within the power of allah
i don't know how to say that in english
prescribed and all i can do is just make
dua for this brother and for other
brothers to stay to the end
so that's another reason why people drop
out of the university
uh the seventh or the eighth reason
is that
some people
they start thinking like oh i'm gonna
study in the islamic university six
years
and
while i'm studying here i can't prepare
anything for my work life i won't be
able to get some
job experience
and when i get back
and i will have interviews people will
say hey you haven't been working for six
years how are you gonna hire you
you know they have these concerns that
while studying here they won't be able
to gain benefits for their worldly life
and shaytan comes over to them like hey
when are you going to get married when
are you going to get your
life settled
and they start thinking hey maybe i
should get back to my country
i should have started
studying at the age of 18 but now i'm 25
and i just started studying
what i'm going to do when it turns 32
yeah that's another reason why some
people drop out of the university of
course along with the other reasons yeah
they get back to the country to to
settle their world life and of course
there is a beautiful hadith it's in the
book of ahmed in the book of hadees
ahmed and ibu maja
so therefore when you concern that much
about this for the life and put it on
the first place it will always look
like you are it's not good enough but if
your main concern will be ahira
you'll
you will
win this
life this world of life and the achara
so of course it's always good for you if
you put in the first place the akhira
instead of
instead of this worldly life and these
students who are concerned about that
the worldly life won't be settled they
really shouldn't do that but again not
all students on the first level of iman
some some of them have
have issues with it
so yeah that's another reason
so basically these are
not eight or nine reasons i will put
them in the in the description of the
video you can read them
and of course when a student comes to
the conclusion okay i'm gonna just drop
out of the university when he does that
and when he gets back to his country
then he regrets about this decision for
the rest of his life he thinks hey
i could have just endured that for a
little period of time i could finish the
study in the
in the islamic university and i could
benefit from myself and for for others
why didn't they do that
they have so many
so many regrets about it i i've seen
that brother
just give let me give you an example
there were two brothers starting here
and one of them decided to drop out of
the university for some reason well not
for some reason he just felt very
down he felt apathy
he just didn't go to the exams
unfortunately
and eventually he dropped out of the
university and two years later or some
time later his brother decided to do the
same
and he said to his brother hey i drop
out of the university and it just eats
me away
that i didn't finish the study please do
not do that do not repeat my mistake so
of course when people
have this opportunity and they just you
know leave it
they
have a lot of regrets about it
and
i want to say that if you ever come
across a chance to study here and you
will enroll at the islamic university
and you'll be studying here please i'm
just asking you
take all the minis me all the means to
finish your study here because
it's once in a lifetime opportunity not
that many muslims are privileged to get
this opportunity there are millions of
muslims who would love to study here who
would love to get this opportunity and
it's it's you have it you have it please
don't take
it very lightly take it seriously like
if you were accepted in the oxford or
some other prestigious university and
you you would get this opportunity for
free
you would hold on to it just
like it's it's everything but do the
same do the same with this opportunity
to study in islamic university please if
you get every chance to study here do
not drop out of it
of course there are
different
circumstances sometimes it's out of your
power but if it's within your power do
whatever it takes to finish your study
that's why i've recorded this uh this
video i hope you will benefit from it
especially those who consider enrolling
at the islamic university
of
you
