have two daughters Who actually go to
sec and Uh I've spoken at the at se
Isabel so here in here in the city I've
actually spoken at the School quite a
few Times and Uh and then also worked at
universities Helping
student athletes in the United States um
Helping develop strategies for them um
and And also I created a Company While I
was in washing living in Washington DC
to help students prepare for exams um
mentorship and Uh and really Helping
students um create a Vision um and and a
plan For To achieve The educational
goals so having both the educational
background and the Medical background
for for this for this
session yeah I'm I come from the
National University of Mexico Uh my
training originally was as a chemist and
biomedical research um And I
I work at the biotechnology institute of
the National University but um I I spent
10 years directing One institute of the
National institut of Health of Mexico
which is the genomics medicine institute
so my capacities as as a researcher and
biomedical expert was were applied To
This New Field of Uh large Data um and
Uh essentially
something quite Uh in syntony What We
are discussing these days Uh but also
Uh po post a problem which is how is
Medical education preparing New students
for the advent of More personalized more
preventive Uh more
um specialized or or High Uh capacity

think my opinions were going to be quite
critical as to What's happening today
with Medical education Thank you my name
is Ja I am a doctor and um software
developer And I Uh devote my time to um
Company I founded Uh six years ago
called care expand that basically Uh
owns and and and and delivers a software
platform for Uh engaging with patients
for clinicians so so It's a basically a
Medical record that extends to
continuity of care in terms of
telemedicine and and and the contact
with the patient establishing Those
things and we Are basically using Ai in
Everything that we do so yeah Very Happy

do we How do we you know get that New
knowledge into established Doctors and
um especially with the Industry at least
United States shifting very much from
providing care in the hospital setting
to more at home Uh more It's Almost like
going back to When Doctors are doing
House calls con medicine Just like we're
Looking individualized learning

dynamic so How do you see Ai can improve
Medical education from both sides
teachers and stud let's say for example
you have to put Word there
training
Open i i you know I think Uh One of
the When I think about the traditional
model training Doctors you know and How
things have changed even from you know
When they were residents and in your
Time You were working you know 120 hours
a week Or You know and and just to try
to get that experience and all that
knowledge you know If Ai is able to make
the learning process more efficient
right and allow Uh the Doctors to use
Those Tools to then be there's that
creative part of medicine that is the
practice of medicine right It's It's
It's taking the the Tools that you have
and the the patient Every patient Every
circumstance Is different um so That's
Where I see you know where Doctors can
become perhaps More more efficient Uh or
all Medical staff right you know to be
able to Uh get back to that human aspect
of it versus um you know It's become
somewhat at least in in certain in
certain Markets you know Uh Where we've
Lost that and and there's been other
drivers for example Insurance and the
legal Uh you know Uh part of the world
is what drives decision making um and
the Doctors Because there's so much
going on If Ai frees them up to be able
to practice medicine In A Way That's
more personaliz in human That's um
That's why I see the biggest change
happening right now
you know um Talk more about continuing
education As you mentioned so we at
intuitive We have surgical robots right
and these surgical robots enable um
surgeons to do minimally invasive
surgery surgery you know
within 3 to 5 c incision Now learning
How to use a robot already is a you know
is a difficult task and As you said you
know surgeons are creatures of habit the
old model is you watch a Surgeon Do it
and then you try to do it yourself and
over and over and Over Again from So You
can become a novice to a Master Master
surgeons are usually Gray haired 60s 70s
actually we feel more comfortable When
we're going to meet a Doctor Who is you
know Who has more experience Now with Ai
that changes the whole education dynamic
so you know in intuitive Now intuitive
has been a Company that has for about 25
years and has these robots that you know
and they've recorded each surgical
session Over The past 20 years and have
included have Fed Those videos into Ai
and so what Ai can do is create
simulations training simulations for
young surgeons to practice on and so
this offers a whole variety of different
educational pathways for individual
students right so Just think Of You know
with all that information all that Data
all that video of of different bodies um
that are tall you know are higher bmi
different complications different
patient history different family history
Uh a Surgeon can say Okay we're Going To
Treat we're going to be doing you know A
prostatectomy On On A patient
and here's the Medical history you can
actually have a simulation that day and
you can simulate do as many as even 100
to 200 you know simulations that day in
order to prepare for surgery the next
day and so you you know Ai really gives
you the opportunity to really shorten
that Gap or that time to become from
becoming a Being a novice to a Master
and so you can have 30y olds even 40y
olds Who have performed surgery
same amount of Time or number of
surgeries you know even though It's
simulated and as as as as Ay G of
expertise rap rap and so This is Where I
see the the biggest um biggest
educational
standpoint well I I I pere as in Every
other Field that the student Will find
it easier to gather the knowledge and to
and to Uh establish an
interactive an interactive Uh
relationship with with with the
knowledge you cannot do with a book Is
Like having a teacher but Beyond That I
I think the most important Uh learning
component Will Will be for the student
to realize that much of What is done
today is going to be performed by this
intelligence systems performing
better than the human in terms of
gathering information in terms of
providing a better diagnostic Uh
impression etc and that What is required
for the physician as a professional is
to be more human so in the end Uh I
think in in the the Medical School Uh
What We Will need to have as soon as
possible is this transition into Uh more
human humanizing of the Medical
profession Beyond the technical
components Which will be of course
facilitated um I think as soon as as as
as the student realizes What
is his or her specific role as as a
human Uh Health Provider
um Will be
better at that stage of the
for me a professional Yeah yeah I think
I think It's going to Ai is going to
change
fundamentally How teachers do their work
How they How they develop their Work In
many Ways I mean What We are seeing in

that really changes a lot of things It's

be obviously more efficient But You can
Reach further which is something that is
that is going to change How people even
think on the other hand I think also It

missing something Now Ai can Tell you

good way and for students It's going to

was thinking about the amount of Data
that Ai captures On A certain student so
we talked about the different
simulations for example and and you know
the teacher or the professor can Give
homework and to make sure or To Know
that their student is prepared for an
exam for the next cel for the next
patient
they have Access or they should have
access to that Data To Know Oh This You
know my My student has has done all
their homework has done All the
simulations um you can see you know
their their performance so they've
improved on their skills their technical
skills they've improved On A variety of
skills that the Ai can can capture um
and so that helps that relationship
between the the teacher and the student
the teacher feels more confidence that
This student is is more prepared and so
we can move Forward with treating this
patient with doing a procedure Because
you know you know that they have All the
competencies needed in order for a
successful Uh successful procedure and
remember that ultimately Everything we
do is for the safety and Health of the
of the patient and so what we're really
trying to create Our Our Our certainties
this was mentioned earlier Where you
know these certainties of of safety good
outcomes um um Great recovery um all
these things Give certainty to the
patient themselves That I know that you
know the doctor That's there has the
proper training All the nurses the staff
has the right training um there's Great
communication between them And I know I
can leave the leave the hospital in in
in Just as good Health as as I
want yeah I think um I think One of the
real advantage and we see it in a lot of
the programs That are designed for early
childhood learning is is how Ai and
Technology been you know Used To kind of
gamify learning right buse learning
should be fun It's fun When you're a
child Uh traditional School
unfortunately starts to Drive creativity
and the the Joy of learning out of Out
Of You As you get older and by the time
You're secondary you just want School to
be over Whatever um and we're Getting
Back to making it fun Uh Because That's
the best environment to to kind of
absorb that knowledge buse you want to
be doing it right and but in that same
sense Because It's Being done through
with with with this Ai kind of aspect to
it we're able to personalize the
learning the Ai there's for example like
Uh there's Khan Academy for example that
has you know a lot of programs and it'll
recognize If you've mastered that skill
it's Not Going To Keep having you repeat
that Which a teacher might have to do
with the Class trying to make sure the
whole Group is progressing relatively
same rate And You Don't really exactly
know Which of your students are you know
at the highest Level and Which are
struggling with certain aspects Ai can
help you Ok you've got you've mastered
that let's spend your extra Time on this
skill that You're a little bit behind
that your your fellow student might be
the opposite right but You're able to Uh
use your resources as a student as a as
an instructor to get them up to Speed On
The things that they're struggling with
Uh in a more efficient way and then
That's Going To Translate When they Go
into practice Because Again Now Ai is
Helping find Those patterns in whether
It's your Blood work results or your
ekgs and things like that so that
they're using the creativity That they
that they've been able to Keep through
that the learning process to then take
Those results and apply that you know
personalized approach that personalized
medicine And also Be Doctors Again you
know It's How much of medicine is is
that bedside manner it's that you know
the the mental you know people forget
How stressed you are When you're going
to see your doctor unfortunately Because
there's something very wrong and is that
mental as aspect of it too even though
we're treating the physical and Uh so
All the Ways That I can help you like
you said get more repetitions Uh work on
specifically what you are need help in
versus Just You know having to go along
Uh with a curriculum That's trying to
bring a whole Group along at the same
Pace and then also for learning skills
even after you know you've been in
practice Uh That's I see the biggest
imp That's a very good Point Because I
think people they should prepare
definitely they should prepare I think
There is going to be a change in
paradigm that is going to be probably
bigger than What we think right now and
Uh probably students Will have to do
less content generation Uh and they
should somehow learn to Focus more on
things that are you know probably
creating more value in terms of for
example the very reasoning you know I
remember When I was a Medical student in
internal medicine Uh i took you know
exams that Will write down 15 pages of
about Just One disease and That's
basically content generation that is
Almost 9% of that can be done by an Ai
System today so It's It's not really
adding Any value or at least It's not
really selecting the things that that
that a human can do you know compared to
what what what a Machine today One of
the System One of these llms or One of
these engines can really generate right
right i
Rather puzzled by the by the um
possibilities That Ai is offering versus

have that the Medical profession and
obviously the teaching of medicine Uh is
very conservative it goes Uh very
caution into into New territories Uh and

Because the technical component you You
are going to be
liberated in the profession to some
extent but the other is Uh Being
prepared for a transition into more PR
medicine versus

Uh How is that going to enter the
transition Because preventive is going
to be facilitated by Ai Uh by the Cloud
of of Data that is going to be
accumulated on each person Uh It's going
change the way that The patient Or the
individual goes to the doctor Uh How is
this introduced in the curriculum It's a
consequence of Ai is not the use of Ai

entrega un trabajo y no sabe lo que lo

poner es que estos datos están sacados

debt o o donde sea que los ponga
naturalmente pero el profesor tiene que
exigirle al alumno no solamente que el
porqué de las cosas que pone que
explique los datos que tiene que es la
única forma de detectar si sabe o no
sabe no Entonces es la primera la la
primera relación que que tiene no Otro
aspecto importante de la Inteligencia
artificial para los médicos desde mi
punto de vista es el siguiente si si
vamos a explicar la neumonía por ejemplo
eh H eh datos actuales de neumonía yo
pongo en puz mez neumonía tratamiento de
neumonía por ejemplo y pongo un año me
van a salir 1000 artículos
pm artículos que son actuales y que
cualquier médico no los puede no lo
puede procesar no los puede procesar
porque es imposible y porque no tiene
tiempo de procesar los 1000 artículos
entonces la Inteligencia artificial te
puede ayudar en esto yo le suelo decir a
los alumnos cuando les hago coaching que
ellos probablemente cuando terminen el
grado tendrán en su computadora en su
ordenador un programa un software de
Inteligencia artificial que cuando venga
un paciente con los datos clínicos con
los datos de imagen por lo tanto de
laboratorio ellos van a tener el
diagnóstico un diagnóstico diferencial
de dos o tres posibilidades con la posib
acertar del 99% O sea que es una gran
ayuda y que no podemos desdeñar y esto
que va a permitir al médico Pues luego t
comprobar si eso es verdadero o no es
verdadero si el sistema está entrenado o
no está entrenado para para darte esos
datos con lo cual va a liberar al médico
muchísimo para tener contacto con el
paciente dedicarse al paciente y y no
dedicarse a los temas burocráticos no
entonces creo que esto es un antes y un
después que nos va a liberar a los
médicos de mucha parte burocrática en
este aspecto y no solamente relación
alumno profesor sino también Ya entrando
en la parte de del del ejercicio
profesional del posgrado es decir eh si
yo estoy una consulta actualmente tengo
mi computadora y tengo que meter los
datos Y ni miro al paciente eh si yo
tengo un sistema de Inteligencia
artificial estoy mirando al paciente le
estoy interrogando la base la nas sin la
exploración física si lo hago ordenada
el software me lo va me lo va a poner
aquí con lo cual voy a dedicar toda la
atención al paciente y no voy a dedicar
atención a a la parte burocrática que
últimamente Pues los gestores de los
hospitales nos cargan de parte
burocrática y hace que la asistencia no
tenga calidad no por tanto creo que
estos dos aspectos van a ser
fundamentales con la Inteligencia
artificial Es cierto que los sistemas
tienen que estar entrenados tienen que
tener fiabilidad credibilidad que esto
es otro punto importante que no podemos
utilizar cualquier sistema que tenemos
que tener sistemas entrenados para que
los resultados la fiabilidad se sea
elevada

formación continua Antes tenemos una
formación que daban el título del grado
ya toda la vida tenías esto hoy en
ciencias de la salud esto es imposible
pensarlo estás es una formación continua
continua y continua por tanto esta
formación no se puede hacer de forma
presencial est esta formación hay que
hacerla híbrida es decir donde las
prácticas tienen que ser prácticas
porque tien que hacerlas naturalmente
con el paciente para la habilidad
Pero todas las clases teóricas se puede
hacer de un sistema asíncrono o síncrono
donde se de la información pero si hoy
en día las aulas están vacías es decir
tú vas a cualquier aula de de un grado
de medicina y a no ser que profesor
tenga mucho gancho pues te puedes
encontrar con que no varie ni el 30% de
los alumnos de forma presencial no
entonces creo que esto hay que darlo no
lamentable lemente Lamentablemente
todavía en
España algunas personas que tienen
responsabilidad en Cómo debe serce la
docencia no han entendido este sistema
todavía se cree que debe ser presencial
los alumnos pueden entender la teoría y
adquirir las competencias de forma
híbrida las prácticas tienen que
hacerlas naturalmente y luego puede
haber modelos de simulación para ciertas
cosas que que no sea bueno hacerlo de
forma real no nosotros en en nuestra
facultad tenemos la posibilidad de hacer
prácticas reales hay ciertas prácticas
que no la podemos hacer reales por
problemas pues
eh éticos donde tienes que recurrir a a
esto pero las formas híbridas podemos
hacerlas y luego aparte de la formación
la práctica real tienes una simulación
que te ayuda a entender te puede ayudar
a entender más más que la práctica real
no hoy yo no entiendo que tengamos que
tener cadáveres para hacer anatomía hoy
en día tú puedes entender la anatomía
con las simulaciones muchísimo mejor que
en la vida real Yo me acuerdo cuando era
era estudiante quedaban allí una pierna
para diseccionar la de un cadáver que
era cadavérico que no veías nada no
veías nada no tiene ningún sentido hoy
en día te UAS un sistemas de simulación
donde puedes ver perfectamente te puedes
meter en una arteria viajar por una
arteria puedes salir del corazón por la
horta por el callado bajar ahora voy a
meter por la mesa entérica cómo llegas
al intestino eso lo puedes hacer hoy en
día y y lo ves de una forma increíble
que yo creo que nuestros alumnos van a
tener una formación mucho mejor que la
que teníamos
Nosotros sí Bueno yo yo también creo que
las dos los dos tipos de de enseñanza
son complementarios y creo que la
Inteligencia artificial se aplica en los
dos ámbitos muy bien la posibilidad de
interactuar humanamente creo que nos
debe perderse y en particular en la en
la en la educación médica esta
interacción directa con el paciente creo
que es insustituible y por ello eh es de
los más retadores en el caso de la de la
enseñanza de la medicina Cuánto tiene
que ser presencial y y Pero es que yo
creo que la Inteligencia artificial nos
va a permitir que los médicos dediquemos
más tiempo a los pacientes es decir ese

claro es que en una jornada diaria de
trabajo si estás en consulta oes estás
en planta
Es que es que dedicas diría yo un 50% a
la parte burocrática si esa parte
burocrática te la te la quitan porque te
la hace la Inteligencia artificial tú
vas a tener contacto con el paciente si
te dan el diagnóstico le vas a explicar
al paciente Cuál es su enfermedad vas a
tener más tiempo Cómo vas a hacer el
tratamiento vas a dedicar mucho más
tiempo te van a quitar la parte
burocrática vamos a volver a la esencia
de la medicina que es la asistencia al
paciente y hacer nuestras dos cosas que
es el diagnóstico y el tratamiento pero
que en la escuela
entr más a es tamb eso también permitirá
es decir formaremos a los médicos en
este sentido en este sentido deir no
tenemos que enseñar otras cosas que
ahora tenemos que

That's Almost Impossible you know the
the students That you Start with at the
end It's less than Half are are with you
at the end so If Ai could be introduced
in the beginning and help Us actually
increase the labor Force by having More
healthc professionals more Doctors more
surgeons you know that that Would you
know That's another Big benefit of Ai

manejarlos y que incluso van más allá de

universidades deben institucionalizar el
uso de la Inteligencia artificial está

Now trying to sell it to to educational
institutions you need that input and

aren't machines It's not all black and
white you can certainly collect Data and
look for patterns but
are the ones That are you know dealing
with the patients and you have to have
that collaboration and developing Those
programs so that they're effective
versus Just throwing Technology at
something buse there's so much money
going into it right now that you know
they're Just going to be like Oh we've
got this we got that and everybody's
afraid to you know be behind the curve
and not You Know implementing It but I
think It's the key is making sure that
Whatever Ai Technology is developed
specifically healthc has has some real
credibility You Know
What we're seen today in my experience
is the amount of Time that you have that
you didn't have before so so for example
You were mentioning this administrative
tasks the First Thing That We are doing
at least in Our experience is automating
All of that in in a way Doctors are
finding that they have two three more
hours per day to do other things that
they they were not expecting before So
The way Those that Time and that that
Focus is Used is is is in Part you know
to be seen but I think That's Where It's
going to really generate a New
paradigm What about the Uh basic
knowledge technical knowledge or
computer knowledge that both students
and Uh Medical Doctors and also other
Health professionals need to
know need to know to use Ai well This is
That's a very
interesting I think
nature of Ai is going to simplify that a
lot a lot I mean What We are seeing also
is is now you have these engines these
systems that can even Uh Listen to you
and and and do interpretation in real
Time and facilitate even The way you
prompt the Ai systems to obtain more
information Now We are training Ai
systems to do prompting for Ai systems
so and some of the basic you know
technical skills and and Just putting
aside medicine for example Kids nowadays
they're already online they're already
using all these digital Tools before
they even get to Medical School they
already know how to you know they
already have the basics and and
hopefully you know within you know sec
you know they they would introduce these
early Enough so that you know Our Our
you know students to be Doctors would be
more prepared you know at that at that
Time Problem so I don't I mean even even
Now in my in my job Where i you know
Part part of what I do is I do these
Market viability assessments for so I
would go to different certain Market
speak to surgeons get their
understanding Of patient pathways um You
know treatment algorithms um and And I
asked a variety of questions And I asked
them you know Are you okay Being Being
recorded and so I would you know I have
a recording device obviously but This is
an Ai integrated recording device that
would Take notes that would give me you
know what are the actions and Give Me
suggestions on on How to move Forward
with you know in this healthc System and
so and This is Something I use And um I
Know other people use it as well but I
have certain digital you know basic
digital experience to know how to use it
Now If I were to give my My Father you
know this he wouldn't he wouldn't know
what To Do Because he doesn't have that
training and so I Think You know
especially the Kids that are coming up
All of this Will already be integrated
in you know primary school and
Elementary School

datos más curadas en donde no entre lo
lo que no es pertinente o lo que no está
bien validado y bien curado eh pero que
el estudiante lo pueda distinguir me
parece que es una habilidad básica que
habría
que propiciar
quiero decir un apunte con respecto a
esto los médicos hacemos nuestra
finalidad Nuestro objetivo son dos cosas
diagnosticar Y tratar luego podemos
salvar vidas o controlar la enfermedad
eso hacemos los médicos no por tanto los
médicos tenemos que estar formados en
estas competencias que son profesionales
Pero luego se nos pide más atender al
paciente desde un punto de vista humano
empatía ición
negociación son unas competencias unas
transversales que cre que son
fundamentales si eres un médico
asistencial naturalmente no entonces
creo que la Inteligencia artificial Es
una herramienta que nos va a ayudar a
adquirir esas competencias pero es una
herramienta no nosotros tenemos que
decirle a los ingenieros Qué necesitamos
para obtener para mejorar esto pero no
tenemos que entrar en desarrolladores
sino decirle Mire yo necesitaría esto
esto como cuando tú hablas un trabajo y
y tienes el estadístico y le dices Mira
HM he hecho esta parte de estadística me
podías afinar la estadística para sacar
un rendimiento mayor y pues vamos a
aplicar este test que tú a lo mejor
desconocías no y y lo puedes aplicar
creo que la Inteligencia artificial Es
una herramienta siempre buscando ayudar
al alumno o al médico en sus objetivos
fundamentales que son el diagnóstico el
tratamiento ser competentes en esto y
una buena relación con el paciente los
médicos para ser médicos necesitamos dos
cosas ser competentes en los en el
diagnóstico en el tratamiento y luego
ser competente también en el trato con
el paciente nosotros no tratamos
enfermedades tratamos pacientes puede
ser un técnico sanitario de primer nivel
o puede ser un médico si solamente te
dedicas al diagnóstico y al tratamiento
de enfermedades eres un técnico
sanitario de primer nivel si eres médico
tienes que ver la parte humana que
comentaba entonces la Inteligencia
artificial debe ser una herramienta para
buscar

optical character recognition to take

templates That you that you require for
that specialty and and quickly identify
on Which pages the relevant information
that You Need Is and can get it into a
format that the doctor can then use so
You're You're freeing up that time to
practice medicine versus it Being a
bottleneck you know Uh and and reducing
the amount of Time available for the
patient so Uh we we are continuously
looking for What are those things that
allow the doctor to practice medicine
that are going to benefit the patient Uh
and Uh and and have a meaningful effect
for
Us I also part of a clinical laboratory
so for example We have the Technology to
do pharmacogenetic testing once once in
lifetime pharmacogenetic testing And I
can know how youl process Every
medication that We know is out there
versus How You Will Because your Gen are
different right now Doctors have to kind
of do Of You know Hey yeah and sometimes
you get adverse events your doctor means
to do well But then You know there's an
adverse event due to that drug Uh in the
United States We have everybody's
supposed to be on electronic Medical
Records which is Great and capitalism
drives innovation but it also they're
all proprietary and They don't
communicate with each other right so How
do we So The patient suffers Because One
doctor May May not have Access Because
it didn't information didn't come over
Because They don't communicate and He's
you know He's Going To prescribe a
medicine and he doesn't know that
patients on contraindicated medicine you
know that another specialist has them on
right or um in in the case of Uh the the
genetic testing They don't have Access
that Where you could write the
prescription and the Ai would recognize
Who this patient can't Take this you
need to prescribe a different Class of
drug right so That's empowering the
doctor to make Those decisions based on
formation that exists How do we use Ai
to get it in the hands of a physician
right now you know we're I don't think
we're maximizing that so as a business
and investor That's What we're looking
for is Those kind of technologies I
