Q & A
What was unique about the Tyrrell P34 Formula 1 car?
-The Tyrrell P34 was unique because it had six wheels, with four small front wheels and two rear wheels, a design that was intended to reduce lift and improve aerodynamics.
Why did Tyrrell decide to develop a six-wheeled Formula 1 car?
-Tyrrell's designer, Derek Gardner, was looking for an 'unfair advantage' that would make the car faster than its competitors while still adhering to the rules of Formula 1 at the time.
What was the initial reaction to the Tyrrell P34 when it was unveiled?
-The initial reaction was one of surprise and shock, with many people left speechless. The car's unveiling was so unexpected that it took a moment before applause broke out.
How did the six-wheel design of the P34 affect its aerodynamics?
-The six-wheel design was intended to reduce the lift generated by the front wheels and decrease the dirty air and vortices created by the front wheels, thus improving the overall aerodynamics of the car.
What were the challenges faced by the drivers when braking in the Tyrrell P34?
-The six-wheel design made the braking balance very complex, as it involved not only balancing between the front and rear wheels but also between the two sets of front wheels, which could lead to one of the wheels locking up during turns.
What role did Goodyear play in the development of the Tyrrell P34?
-Goodyear, the main tire supplier for Formula 1 at the time, believed in the six-wheel concept and developed smaller front tires for the P34. They also provided a young mathematician, Carl Goodyear, who calculated the perfect tire sizes using early computers.
What were the main competitors of the Tyrrell P34 during its racing years?
-The main competitors of the Tyrrell P34 were Ferrari and McLaren, with drivers like Niki Lauda and James Hunt, who were engaged in a spectacular duel during the 1976 season.
What was the fate of the Tyrrell P34 in the 1977 season?
-In 1977, the evolved version of the Tyrrell P34 faced reliability issues and was less competitive due to the discontinuation of the development of the smaller front tires by Goodyear, making the car undriveable and unable to achieve any victories.
Who were the drivers of the Tyrrell P34, and how did they feel about the car?
-The drivers of the Tyrrell P34 were Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler. While Depailler loved the car and felt comfortable with its handling, Scheckter struggled with its braking and handling, never finding confidence in the car.
What was the impact of the Lotus 78 on the Tyrrell P34's competitiveness?
-The arrival of the Lotus 78 in 1977 shifted the focus in Formula 1 to aerodynamics and ground effect designs, which did not complement the four front wheels of the Tyrrell P34, further reducing its competitiveness.
Why was the six-wheel concept eventually abandoned in Formula 1?
-The six-wheel concept was abandoned after the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1, banned the practice. The concept was not adopted by other teams, and the Tyrrell P34 remains the only Formula 1 car with six wheels to have won a race.

visionarie benzine speciali sospensioni
attive 16 cilindri doppio telaio turbine
tirrel p34
[Musica]
22 settembre
Maranello pronta a vincere mondiali e
ripetizione tolta la Ferrari se vuoi
diventare un pilota di quelli che
contano Ti conviene trasf in Inghilterra
prima o poi se vuoi diventare un
ingegnere in Inghilterra avrai il doppio
delle possibilità e se sei un
giornalista ti conviene bazzicare in
Inghilterra frequentarla perché le
notizie quelle vere quelle che contano
sono tutte lì la mattina del 22
settembre
1975 quindi quasi tutti i giornalisti di
livello che scrivono di Formula 1 si
trovano sullo stesso pullman in
Inghilterra direzione hitro ospiti della
tirrel una delle squadre all'epoca più
importanti di tutto il Circus tra questi
giornalisti c'è anche un francese che
guardando le quattro ruote anteriori del
pullman Mentre sale a bordo esclama
Certo che siete proprio strani voi
inglesi con queste ruote anteriori Ah
aspe aspe aspe come faceva quel
giornalista A saperlo Chissà magari avrà
avuto un contatto all'interno della Elf
l'azienda petrolifera sponsor principale
della tirrel Beh ovviamente Voi che
sapete di cosa parlo capite il
riferimento Ma lì sul momento nessuno
capì che cosa intendesse e quella
battuta rimase a tutti gli effetti lì
sospesa nell'aria cioè con ruote
anteriori tutti se la dimenticano e quel
bus marcia diretto verso l'hotel dove
verrà presentata la nuova tirrel
destinata alla stagione 76 la tirrel p34
e tutti Stan pensando a quello
avanti piano piano scoprono l'ala
posteriore che è Nazionale scoprono il
cambio hland quello che hanno tutte le
squadre inglesi e poi scoprono il Ford
Cosworth D FV il motore V8 aspirato che
domina la Formula 1 da un decennio ma
fin qui tutto normale Cioè boh poi vanno
avanti l'abitacolo
macchina qualunque Beh basta aspettare
qualche altro secondo perché quando il
telo scopre l'anteriore della ti l p34
tutti i presenti Rimangono senza parole
parte neanche l'applauso Ma perché beh
potete immaginare tante persone
coinvolte eppure quel silenzio era
rimasto tranne forse quel giornalista
l'avevano pensato negli Stati Uniti 30
all'inizio correva nelle formule minori
Formula 3 Formula 2 la solita solfa solo
che all'epoca Formula 3 e Formula 2
erano dei campionati indipendenti
rispetto alla Formula 1 ed erano molto
molto molto competitivi le case Ci
investivano i piloti di Formula 1
correvano in Formula 2 perché lì i premi
erano più alti Perciò se arrivavi a
vincere in Formula 2 Eh beh stai sicuro
facevano questi Team all'inizio
folia lo so Però all'epoca era così e
costruire in casa così Ken tirrel andò
anni 70 eh quindi dimentichiamoci
all'esordio conquistò la Pol position e
che dopo qualche ritocco di Derek Garner
nella versione 003 vinse il mondiale del
71 R raga Fermi stop Fermi tutti ferma
anche la musica videomaker fermala
fermala fermala Cioè voi avete capito
che questi hanno vinto un mondiale di
Formula 1 con una macchina progettata da
un tizio da solo nella casetta degli
attrezzi del suo
giardino con carta e
penna Ok possiamo ripartire con la
musica Il segreto di Garner era molto
semplicemente la razionalità un
ingegnere esperto in cambi aveva
progettato una monoposto e lo aveva
fatto a modo suo aerodinamica
convenzionale ottima distribuzione dei
pesi affidabilità facilità d'utilizzo
Derek aveva spinto sui propri punti di
forza che erano diversi da altri
fenomeni progettisti quali Forghieri o
veramente bello quel video Ecco arrivati
sembra quasi banale I was searching for
an unfair Advantage stava cercando la
soluzione geniale quel vantaggio sleale
anni 70 e Ormai ve l'ho ripetuto quasi
fino allo sfinimento tutte le squadre
inglesi o quasi avevano il motore Ford
cosf D FV tutti avevano lo stesso cambio
huland l'aerodinamica era simile per
tutti Non erano ancora arrivati i canali
Venturi le forme erano abbastanza
semplici qua quasi tutto il carico
arrivava dalle ali fondo diffusore erano
una cosa che apparteneva al futuro
Insomma Ste auto inglesi erano quasi
75 quelle quattro ruote anteriori fecero
a sei ruote era abbastanza diretta in
macchina avanza meno Resistenza
aerodinamica insomma giusto in realtà no
macchina machina Ma come credo ormai
serve proprio a dare carico e
schiacciare a terra la macchina
sull'anteriore Inoltre quelle quattro
ruotine piccole nascoste dietro l'aria
avrebbe
funzionato all'inizio sembrò che andasse
tutto bene La tir l p34 non diede troppi
problemi nei test Patrick de payet l'
adorava la chiamava my baby era molto
contento delle sensazioni che gli
trasmetteva la monoposto gli piaceva il
bilanciamento e si trovava molto a suo
agio con l'inserimento che aveva in
curva al contrario jod schecter la
odiava dal primo chilometro percorso
durante i test riusciva mai a frenare
decentemente quindi perdeva confidenza
anteriore Eh no perché dovevi bilanciare
bel problema insomma serviva molto
adattamento molta pazienza In frenata
Formula 1 dell'epoca aveva creduto in
quel progetto a sei ruote aveva quindi
sviluppato delle gomme anteriori più
piccole e aveva messo a disposizione un
giovane matematico ventisettenne Carl
computer All'epoca c'erano i primi
primordiali calcolatori
Provate a usarli cioè raga l'app
calcolatrice che c'è qui dentro andava
1000 volte più di quelli Insomma il
progetto della p34 era molto curato e i
primi risultati arrivarono subito quarto
posto alla seconda gara in Belgio doppio
podio a Monaco e doppietta in Svezia
alla quarta gara disputata fantastico la
tirrel p34 era pronta a conquistare il
mondo
beh no
impegnati in quello spettacolare duello
in quegli anni arrivarono comunque
diversi Podi in qualche altra gara la
evoluta quell'auto andava forte Sembrava
normali quelle grosse erano andate
avanti con lo sviluppo Mentre invece le
gommine anteriori della tirrel no E
nessuna Vittoria e pensate addirittura
che Derek Garner stanco e deluso a fine
stagione mandò tutti a fare in e si
ritirò dalla Formula
1 la storia della tirel p34 finì così
molto male e purtroppo per colpa delle
gomme Chissà se con la giusta evoluzione
quell'auto avrebbe potuto restare
competitivo Magari avrebbe addirittura
vinto un mondiale Beh in realtà l'arrivo
della Lotus 78 proprio nel 1977 spostò
il Focus sull'aerodinamica e i canali
Venturi e quelle quattro ruote anteriori
Williams provarono tutti a mettere in
non so voi ma a me
continua a sembrare fantascienza
