Q & A

Transcripts
when you think of a city you probably
think of tall buildings and bustling
cars and just miles of asphalt and yet
if you visit any city in the US you will
encounter places that are kind of like
this parks right now I'm in pottery
Canyon Natural Park which is a right
next to a pretty busy road out here in
San Diego it's small but very beautiful
anyway I was thinking about this the
other day because parks are scattered
throughout all of these cities and large
swaths of the United States are put
aside as parkland but from a financial
standpoint parks don't really make sense
I mean you look at someplace like
Central Park in New York or even this
little Park in San Diego and it seems
obvious that the city could make some
good money if they developed it and sold
it as a plot I mean this parks just
taking up useful space right no God
please no no no no nobody wants that
people value these spots a lot of people
think of parks is like a respite from
city life it clears the head and keeps
us grounded and in fact I would guess
that a vast majority of folks want even
more parks even my extremely scientific
Twitter poll showed that most people
want more parks forget about that 2%
anyway I went on a trip with Ally and my
dad to the desert recently and while we
were there my dad asked me what do you
like about the desert and I thought that
was a good question you know because
it's it's not particularly hospitable
the Sun is just blazing hot during the
day and it gets ice-cold at night
especially if it's windy and there's not
a drop of water around so you really got
to be careful but I just absolutely
loved it on a clear day you can see
hundreds of miles the plants and
critters are all just so unique but what
I think I love most is how quiet it gets
out there
if you sit still enough and breathe
silently you can really get lost in the
scenery we love natural spaces were
drawn to them we travel to the middle of
nowhere to surround ourselves with trees
we listen to the deep gentle waves of
the ocean we admire the Sun glinting off
the mountains and we swim and hike and
camp we even keep many natural spaces in
front of our houses and near our offices
and in restaurants think about it for a
moment if given the option at dinner
would you rather sit facing inside or
have a view when you feel stressed do
you ever take a walk outside why our
apartments with balconies so much more
desirable
how come hospital patients with a view
of nature recover faster why are people
who live near accessible green spaces
more satisfied with their neighborhood
it's clear that as human beings we crave
nature but why well it turns out that
among other things nature is good for
your mental health okay let's look at
the research in three separate studies
from 2013 2015 and 2017 doing outdoor
activities was positively associated
with higher life satisfaction another
study in 2013 with 20,000 participants
found that people reported feeling
happier when in natural environments
compared to built environments and yet
another study in 2010 found that people
felt more energetic when in nature and
even when they just thought about nature
I mean how amazing is that a
meta-analysis from 2010 looked at 25
different studies that examine the
effects of nature and it found that
natural scenery generally improved a
person's emotional state a 2015
meta-analysis of 32 studies backed this
up and showed a significant increase in
positive effect and a small decrease in
negative effect
so people were both happier and less
upset when they were exposed to nature
even cooler the effect was present when
people were just shown pictures of
nature scenes but it was even stronger
when people were actually in nature so
why do we love nature anyway why is a
species do we benefit from nature well
there are three primary theories out
there one is based on evolutionary
psychology called the Biophilia theory
it says that since our ancestors come
from natural spaces and since survival
was tied to food and water found in
nature
we have an ingrained affinity for
natural spaces it's in our genes while
there is some indirect evidence of
attraction to nature from a young age
and through adulthood this theory isn't
really all that provable I mean I guess
you could find some neurological link
but it's pretty unlikely as such I view
it like I view a lot of evolutionary
psychology it's fun to think about but
not all that useful
another theory the psycho evolutionary
stress reduction theory or SRT also
looks at our ancestors for clues it
posits that when our ancestors would
encounter resource rich areas like
forests and oceans and other natural
spaces they could relax and feel less
stressed because it feels safe so today
we evolved to respond positively and
have less stress when we encounter these
same natural environments some of the
evidence we talked about before supports
this theory and on top of that some
research shows that short-term exposure
to nature is correlated to better mood
lower heart rate reduced cortisol levels
and better immune functioning and
extended exposure to nature is
correlated with improved physical health
however I'd be curious if they were
controlling for whether or not time
spent outside correlates with other
healthy habits like good eating and you
know going to the doctor and stuff like
that in any case this theory relies on a
hypothesis that we can't really prove
because we can't test it on our ancient
ancestors the third theory is the
attention restoration theory or art I
really like that acronym this theory
supposes that modern urban environments
are so busy and complex that we easily
fall victim to directed attention
fatigue now directed attention is when
you pay attention to something specific
and directed attention fatigue is
phenomenon where your brain's ability to
pay attention to something specific gets
worn down over time by other
distractions so if you're having a
conversation with a friend and a car
alarm goes off outside you might lose
focus and get distracted the longer that
the alarm goes off or if at the end of a
long day you just feel really worn out
and unfocused it might be because of all
the barrage of sights and smells and
sounds that day the more directed
attention fatigue that you experience
the more stress didn't irritable you
become according to the art theory which
is kind of a redundant thing to say
because it's the attention reduction
theory
well anyway nature doesn't require the
same level of directed attention and
therefore we feel refreshed and happier
in nature this theory also draws on
evolutionary ideas and it says that it
was advantageous for our ancestors to
not be mentally fatigued which yeah I
mean of course but again it's just not
provable and finally there's an unnamed
theory that thinks that nature reminds
us of positive childhood memories and
therefore visiting them later in life
gives us a warm and fuzzy calming
sensation
now while this may be true for some it
does not account for experiences of
people who may not have easy access to
parks in childhood like people living in
extremely urban environments however I'd
be interested in the research that
accounts for these factors I see that
actually being beneficial the average
American spends 93% of their day indoors
I mean think that's about half a day per
week given that depressing number it's
no wonder that people benefit from
reconnecting with nature and clinicians
in particular have developed several
forms of eco therapy that harness
nature's restorative effects to help
your mental health shinrin yoku or
forest bathing was developed in Japan in
the 1980s the idea is simple surround
yourself with a canopy of nature and use
your five senses to feel in touch with
your environment forest bathing may
involve sitting or walking slowly
through nature for hours at a time it's
a way to slow down and just relax I'll
throw my two cents in here which is
a lot of research I read about forest
bathing was conducted by the same
handful of folks and as such I'm a
little skeptical about the hyperbolic
claims surrounding it however I think
that the techniques are still useful
it's essentially mindfulness but in
nature
another form of eco therapy is nature
meditation this is similar to forest
bathing you put yourself in a natural
environment and meditate there's not
much more to it than that
unlike forest bathing it doesn't have
the same diehard fan base it just tries
to combine the benefits of both
meditation and nature exposure in one
activity horticultural therapy uses
gardening and other plant-based
activities to help clients the thought
is that if the aesthetic of plants calm
people down and make them happier then a
therapist can use them as a valuable
tool in session a meta-analysis of the
effects of gardening showed that it
effectively reduced the symptoms of
depression and anxiety it reduced stress
and it also reduced the number of mood
disturbances that people experienced in
addition it increases people's quality
of life a sense of community physical
activity levels and cognitive
functioning so yeah I'm all in about
this the last form of therapy I'll talk
about is wilderness therapy this is a
controversial form of treatment for
adolescents who may have had a number of
behavioral or mental health problems
therapy takes place outdoors and
involves individual and group therapy
it's intended to work on behavioural
modification by using outdoor activities
like camping as learning opportunities
the reason that it's controversial is
because well not all programs are
created equal
due to lacks regulations and oversight
there have been reports of abuse in some
of these programs and some of them are
just simply boot camps genuine
wilderness therapy programs will be
informed by experiencial education and
psychology rather than a military model
which is what the boot camps would be if
you are considering wilderness therapy
please do your research to assure that
you're getting a credible ethical
program so there you have it nature is
good nature
helps people you probably already knew
that in your gut but now you've got
something to back it up and if you look
around you you'll see this in action I
mean if you come to San Diego any day of
the week before sunset you'll see tons
of people lining the beach they're not
swimming they're not playing games many
times they're not even talking they're
just standing there watching the sunset
so do yourself a favor sometime this
week go find yourself some nature go
camping or take a walk or watch the
sunset thanks for watching this episode
of Mike psyche I'm Micah and until next
time think about it
