hi and welcome back Law Firm owners to
the wildly successful Law Firm podcast
I'm your host you're mean and this
episode we are going to answer your most
asked question of me as a consultant
which is nermeen how can a law firm
consultant help me grow my Law Firm
so let's answer that question but before
I do there's a couple things that I want
to remind you of all of these questions
are coming from my book that I created
zero to a million how to grow your Law
Firm the link for that is below
especially if you are more of a reader
then I've got all of these questions and
more in that book that you can purchase
down below and by the way if you get it
before March 31st then I will answer one
question about your law firm and that's
included in the cost of the book okay so
let's talk about what a law firm
consultant is and how they can actually
help you grow so a law firm consultant
is generally someone or a company that
has the skills that are needed for
growing a business like a law firm now I
know that sounds really generic but
generally a consultant is someone who's
going to give you tips to grow your firm
they're going to strategize with you
they're going to do some analysis on
what you're currently doing they what
they're really looking for is this is
what the perfect Law Firm looks like and
this is yours so what do we need to do
to get you from here to here okay how do
we help you become a better functioning
Law Firm that is profitable that has a
good team culture whose clients are
happy and leaving five star reviews
every day on Google that generally is
what the purpose of a practice
consultant is okay they're there to help
you grow and in the process of growing
your revenues and your profitability
they're also going to help you with some
of the processes that you have in place
to make things more efficient and to cut
costs so one of the questions that I get
often is I mean what's the difference
between a consultant and a coach I
actually did a reel on this on Instagram
not too long ago and it's probably one
of my funniest ones yet so what I always
say is that a coach is going to be
someone who asks you questions a
consultant is going to be someone who
gives you answers let me give you it to
you more direct a coach is going to say
something like how do you feel about
your hourly rate what value you do you
want to give to your clients how do you
want your clients to feel when they see
your hourly rate right those are the
things that a coach is going to ask you
about your hourly rate a consultant like
me is going to say okay you practice in
Boston you are in so and so practice
area you're an employment attorney and
you've got three years in practice which
means you should be charging 350 an hour
on the low end
and the high end of that would be 400.
so let's pick a number in between those
two that generally is a is the big
difference between a practice consultant
and let's say a big business coach okay
so again it depends on you and do you
want someone asking you questions or are
you just like give me the answers I just
need to know what to do I'm exhausted I
can't think for myself anymore just tell
me if you're the latter then you need a
law firm consultant hey laugh I'm
Runners take two seconds right now and
please hit the like And subscribe button
below it goes a long way for the growth
of this channel that just helps other
law firm owners like you do the right
things to grow their practice thank you
so much now the next question I get
often about Law Firm Consultants is how
do you as a law firm owner know that you
need a law firm consultant so there's a
couple of things that I'm looking for
with the clients that I'm working with
and you can use this as indicators of
yes I need a law firm consultant it
number one You definitely want to make
sure that you are trying to grow your
practice so you are and by growth I
don't mean you made 150 000 last year
and you want to make 200 000 this year
that's not the growth I'm talking about
you could probably do that on your own
by just listening to these podcast
episodes and implementing the things
that I'm recommending here but if you
want to grow from let's say 750
000 to a million or you want to go from
a million to two or you want to have
some significant growth number then you
want a law firm consultant beside you
okay so that's example number one you
want to grow your Law Firm the second
case where you know that you will need a
law firm consultant is when you as a law
firm owner are completely burned out
your staff is exhausted you have no
retention in your staff
uh you hire new people they leave or
they have no idea what's going on and
they keep saying hey I don't really
understand what the process is here once
I file a demand letter what do you want
me to do after and you don't have clear
processes or you sign a client and then
they don't pay because they didn't get
an invoice
because your team didn't know to send
one because there isn't clear
documentation of processes and there
aren't things that systematically are
there and make sense or if you're the
one who's doing all of that who's like
as the law firm owner you're saying did
you send that out did you do that did
you do that then there are clear
inefficiencies in your process and
having a law firm consultant will
greatly benefit you because it will pull
you out of being the person who is
required to do all of this work
and it will put in processes and
training so that your team can support
you so that you can be the law firm
owner and not you know an admin in your
own Law Firm right which happens quite
frequently and those are the two things
that you really want to look out for and
maybe for you you know that you want to
grow but you know that you've also got
some sloppy processes so you definitely
want to reach out to a consultant if you
are one or both of those categories so
the next question that I get is okay so
I know I need a law firm consultant now
how do I know which one I should hire I
will say this it there are so many Law
Firm Consultants out there
and everyone does something just a
little bit different you have someone
who maybe just focuses on finances and
profitability maybe maybe they're
calling themselves a CFO great so you
know that they're going to help you with
the financial processes they're going to
help you figure out your pricing maybe
they'll help you get on a better
invoicing system so that you can get
paid faster that's one such person that
you could hire you could also hire a
marketing strategist whose title is
exclusively around marketing okay they
are also a consultant for your business
which means they're going to ideally
hopefully help you figure out who your
best clients are they're going to help
you get more of those clients and then
they're going to help you create
branding messaging logos website design
all of that that reflects that kind of
client that you want to work with Okay
that's another example of a law firm
consultant there are process Consultants
who who will help you figure out your
operational processes in your firm which
means what happens when someone signs on
as a client what happens when you are
done completing a client project and
it's the case is complete it's done it's
finished what happens after that they
will sit down and map all of these
processes out in your firm and make sure
that things aren't getting lost in the
shuffle there's a lot of Law Firm
Consultants out there there's a lot of
people who label themselves as Law Firm
Consultants I want to tell you that I
think generally most people have some
qualifications but please do dig in on
their qualifications for providing you
advice I've had people come to me and
say oh hey this marketing person wants
to create
this funnel system this package system
for me and the reality is that that's
not a good fit for lawyers it just
doesn't make sense to bring in business
that way and for every successful lawyer
that has that process work there's about
a hundred who it didn't work for so I
want you to keep that in mind as you're
deciding who you want to hire now
naturally at this point I get a lot of
inquiries about should I join such and
such Law Firm practice management group
management program here's my honest
answer and I've put this down on paper
you can hold me to it to the end of time
I hate all practice Management Programs
you know their names I'm not going to
call them out my personal and
professional opinion is they
suck and I will say that a lot of my
clients are the people who those
programs didn't work for so they they
went into it they were super excited
they did all the things and it didn't
work the thing with a lot of these
programs is that they're not a
one-to-one experience they are group
settings okay they throw you in with a
bunch of people or if you want some sort
of one-to-one work you get that one
person once a week they're also working
with a hundred other people they don't
remember the first thing about your your
firm and they've just got a script okay
well did you do this did you do this did
you do this I mean
why would you spend that kind of money
for someone who's just gonna give you
back a script like every Law Firm is
unique and
every strategy I've ever built for a law
firm is different from the next one
right I could have four estate planning
Attorneys at the same time and none of
their practices look the same which
means none of their strategies should be
the same and I know that because I've
worked with enough at this point to know
that what works from what doesn't work
for the other so I say that to say you
you're spending all this money to be in
a group program who's treating all
estate planning all personal injury all
as one and they're not they are so
significantly different okay and if you
didn't already listen to that episode on
pricing then this is where that comes in
your location your practice area how
many years you've been practicing these
are just three of the factors that
determine the kind of practice that you
have oh and by the way you get to decide
what kind of practice you want to have
which what I have found is that they
just put you into a box the financial
you're making half a million you're
making 250 you're making this
that's not enough to define a law firm
not from how I do Consulting and again I
will tell you I hate all those programs
I think that they all suck I think you
are paying way too much and I don't care
if you hire me or not but just work with
someone one to one if you're going to
spend that kind of money okay like you
should be getting that for your Law Firm
you should not be in a group setting I
do not recommend it what's right for one
firm may be completely wrong for your
firm sure it's nice to commiserate with
other people when clients suck and team
sucks and the judge sucks and this
happened and that happened great get a
group of law school friends and vent to
them don't spend thousands of
dollars to vent to people which you are
looking for is strategy that is
customized and tailored to you your Law
Firm your practice your money your rules
all right okay so that is everything for
this episode today thank you so much for
listening in as always
please like And subscribe and if you got
any value from this video please share
it with someone who might really find
this to be helpful thank you so much and
I will see you in the next episode
bye lawyers
