lockon to get started Allan we have been
busy all week long Alan Saunders is here
y'all from Steelers now.com sorry I I
feel like it's it's crazy you and I have
been hanging out a lot we have had some
Adventures uh you've lost to me in darts
quite a lot
um just had to get that in there uh but
it's fine I want to we'll get to back to
the combine stuff but because of you
know the unfortunate passing of Omar
Khan's family member you know we weren't
able to talk to him early in the week
but now that we got to talk to Steelers
GM he did get to talk and I think the
biggest things to take out of this is
just how he responded to quarterback
questions with the Steelers now full
disclo you know for getting this out
here before we get crazy here the whole
job of the GM at these things is to not
give away anything that they're doing to
the public that they don't want anyone
else to know so he's his job is to not
say say much here but if you read
between the lines there's something
interesting here Allan we're gonna play
this quick this clip of what he said
when he when he was getting asked about
Kenny picket you guys an organization
still have full faith in him or does he
have to show you something in this third
year I mean we have we have uh I I have
full faith in uh in in Kenny um he shown
us some good things and obviously there
were some issues with the offense and
I'm excited about the impact that that
Arthur Smith's going to have on him you
know Arthur's very optimistic about
Kenny and um you know I know they've
communicated and um you said we we'll
have uh some strong competition there
and uh we'll see where it goes feel feel
really good about it when you change
offensive coordinators do you go kind of
back through the work you've already
done on this draft class and say hey we
might be doing things differently now
some of these guys fit in a different
way maybe they did before you're talking
about the draft class this year yeah
like this year's draft class you know we
we kind of I don't I don't know if
we I mean it changes things a little bit
you know as as we've met and understood
uh some of the things that he'd like to
do uh but we have some good pieces in
place here you know we have some good
football players uh uh on on the
offensive side so um I I guess it takes
a you take that into account a little
bit but overall we you know we evalu we
try to evaluate everyone best as we can
you just kind of quickly sum up what do
you think maybe the sort of court
characteristics are of what art is
trying to do and and what you think that
maybe me mentality of your offense is
going to be yeah you know I I don't know
from the mentality if anything's changed
I mean you guys know we we like being a
physical football team um but I'll let
him answer it those at the right time or
a coach on when you guys get him in
March so Allan you I I wanted people to
also hear your follow-ups there you know
talking about Arthur Smith or arth what
what the Steelers offense is going to
look like with him at OC what's your
reaction to just how he's answering that
there and just that combined with what
we already know about the Steelers
quarterback
situation well I think it's pretty clear
that I
mean I don't know Kenny picket starting
right like I I I just feel like that's
it's it almost feels like it's been
decided I mean they say they want
competition um but then they say they
want full they have full faith in Kenny
picket like
I If you have first of all these things
are contradict right if you have full
faith in Kenny picket then why do you
need competition you only need
competition if you don't have full faith
in Kenny picket that's that's very clear
um but I just I
don't it just seems very it seems
obvious that that that's what is going
to happen here there's going to be a
competition at the quarterback position
but anybody that comes here is going to
come here with the understanding that
they're going to be at best competing
for this job they're not going to be
getting it which means you're basically
getting a backup to Kenny picket right I
mean like that's that's what's going on
I I I agree with that assessment like
Kenny pet is not out of the plans like
they are not looking to replace him
they're going to bring someone in that
if he doesn't play well he will be
replaced but they're not coming out in
in in this with this idea that like hey
they're just gonna go get a whole new
quarterback that is definitely that that
just Kenny picket going to stand no
chance against and also like you know it
takes work to get those guys you know it
would take a serious trade it would take
you know draft picks being lost big
money be being lost or you know like you
know maybe they get Russell Wilson that
that's the one where I think that that
could that could be different there
because of his contract situation
technically he could take a very small
contract and still make a a lot of money
next year there's a lot of stuff going
on there but um as far as Kenny pigy
yeah it seems like this organization
still thinks that they need to give him
a chance and the players that they're
going to bring in whether it's Mason
Rudolph whether it's Ryan Tan and also
more did say that they've You Know
spoken with Mason Rudolph doesn't mean
he's coming back but there's been
Communications there with his
representative um but it it's clear the
Steelers whole thing here like the faith
in in Kenny pick it yes they're goingon
to bring a competition I think the faith
is that he has to be able to stand tall
against competition because like if I'm
if I'm the GM if if it's me trying to
make sure that I have the guy I want my
the guy to not be afraid to lose his job
to not to not be flustered by bringing
in competition to prove like hey you
know what you know I need to prove that
I I can be the man and it'd be different
if it was like you know if he was proven
If he if he was a super if he was
Patrick mahes if he was Josh all you
know if he if he was you know Jaylen
Herz those those are different things
like when you're approve but Kenny has
to prove it and he's there's there's
been flashes there's been moments but he
has not had a complete game he has not
had a great stretch of games and or even
a good stretch of games I'd say he's had
like decent play here and there and
clutch play but I think it's a very re
place like hey you still got to prove it
it but it's okay to say hey we still
have faith that he can prove it I think
the first thing you said there makes the
most sense to me is it just feels like
they're trying to put themselves in a
better position for what happens if
Kenny picket turns out not to be the guy
but that's gonna have to be de like the
competition solely rests on Kenny picket
not what the other guy does right it's
just right if if Kenny can come in and
be good enough or better at least then
he's going to get chances it's just okay
what happens if he's not that's I mean
that's that's really with this
competition the competition is Kenny
picket versus Kenny picket can he show
Improvement Omar said he felt like
there's reason to believe that Kenny Pi
can be significantly better in Arthur
Smith's offense he he basically blamed
Matt Canada for a lot of the problems
with last year's offense and said you we
had problems with the offense we made a
change we feel like he can be better
with Arthur Smith so what the the what
Omar's throwing out there is Kenny needs
to be better they're acknowledging that
Kenny needs to be better the competition
is Kenny versus Kenny can Kenny prove
that he can be better and if he can be
better then he's our guy and if he can't
then this guy that this other
quarterback or quarterbacks that come in
are going to be in a position to replace
him but it's not like let's let's be
real it's not really going to be a
competition right like not in the
traditional sense of things because
they're starting out with Kenny picket
as their
quarterback right no I feel I feel you
on on that I also thought it was
interesting when uh he was asked about
you know Dustin Fields trades this this
was his response and it's interesting
how I've seen this response interpreted
on on on Twitter uh in either direction
but here's Omar Khan would that being
asked there one going be asked about
that over there so give you a trial run
all right you trading for Justin
Fields um I I'm not going to go into
details about the conversations that
we've had but like I mentioned earlier I
I I I can tell you that I I have an
obligation to look at every Avenue um
that's out there to uh to try to make us
a better football team how about Kur
cousins and Russell
wils everybody else who've been rumored
to something yeah same same answer there
was discussions so like it's there's
kind of like a tonguey cheek there but
like it's funny I saw some people being
like see he he's he's not do he's not
making any big moves or you know at
quarterback and other people saying see
he's looking into making big moves at
quarterback but I I just think it's it's
funny how how those type of things
happen but again it's when you're
talking to these guys you got to read
between the lines with stuff like that
and when they're talking about what the
competition that they're bringing in Ken
if you're bringing in competition for
Kenny pick it it means you're not
getting one of those guys that they just
named because those guys most of those
guys those aren't competition guys guys
those are they're taking Kenny's job and
that that that's just going to be that
guys yeah and and that just doesn't seem
to like again like the statements are
kind of contradictory right so like it's
really hard to make sense of it all and
and he's kind of talking out of both
sides of his mouth right I mean he's
saying like I'm not ruling anything out
um and and I get it because like okay do
I think the Steelers are likely to trade
for Justin fields no do I think if the
price gets down to like a 20
255th would they be like well
that's nothing let's
go you maybe um you know
like do I think they're gonna trade for
Sam how I I don't know I mean probably
not but maybe Washington makes it
interesting you know I think he's trying
to leave doors open and not close them
with his words
right and I I think that's um you
know that's probably where this sort of
both sidy talk is coming from but like I
I kind of feel like he's accounting for
some pretty remote possibilities there
yeah I'm right I'm right with you on
that there were other things he talked
about other than quarterback I want to
get to some of those things in the next
segment here on the lock on Steelers

to
discuss but first want to remind you

Steelers podcast I'm your host Chris
Carter here with Alan Saunders of
Steelers now.com Allan let's get to
something else here and this is a
question by our guy Nick faraba that I
thought was really interesting because
it I I thought this would be another one
where Omar Khan would kind of talk out
the both sides of his mouth but I liked
the way he was kind of definitive about
this about this question it was
involving bradrick Jones here's Omar K
Omar you started bradick at left tackle
but he moved to right tackle mid-season
do you guys kind of view him as a
versatile tackle now as a right tackle
or a guy that maybe you guys want to
move back to the left next yeah he he's
you know I I I've said this before
versatility on the offensive line is
important and he proved that he could
play right tackle but he was drafted to
be a left tackle and eventually he will
be a left tackle and uh uh when that is
you know time will tell but he was
drafted to be a left tackle
so it's been one of my theories that the
Steelers could be in a position with
this draft class where they could see a
top tier left tackle and be like at 20
and be like you know what we're taking
him and and just be like hey you know
what we're GNA go into Camp we're going
to see who's the better left tackle
whoever's not whoever isn't goes to
right tackle and you have just a good
problem on your hands but giving that do
you think that you know with that if
brck Jones really is meant to be the
left tackle is that a change there or is
this because he did kind of leave it
there you know him to transfer to left
tackle you know when it's time to do so
but there that could be open-ended as
far as is that is that this this
training camp next training camp the
training camp after that how do you
think that impacts offensive line
planning as far as who they're looking
at I think if we're talking about the
Steelers you know going offensive line
in the draft it's almost definitely a
right tackle there just aren't that many
left tackle types in this class it's
really deep in terms of right tackle
guys you know I like their chances of
getting one at 20 if they want to go
down that road um and I like their
chances of they being like a draftable
one at 51 if they want to wait um but
it's it's just not a lot of left tackle
types like I think it's mostly right
tackles and so guys like JC leam or
mariio Mims um Troy fanu you know those
guys are right tackles probably and
Tyler gon um so I
think here here's what I think it it
depends on who the addition is right so
like JC leam is a guy who's played a lot
for Alabama he's certainly a right
tackle he's not like the world's
greatest athlete he's a gigantic dude
right I think if you draft him at 20 or
maybe you would have to trade up a
couple spots to get them whatever then
you could come into the season and say
Jason leams are right tackle bradrick
Jones our left tackle we got our people
in the places where we want them to
let's go but like what if it's a guy
like amarius Mims or Tyler gon guys that
are like not really finished products or
guys that have big question marks about
like the timeline of their transition to
NFL Readiness right where gon's like
still pretty raw and you're really just
projecting on a lot of a lot of tools
and Mims you know looks great on tape
but has only played eight games so if
you don't really know exactly what
you're getting if you draft one of those
guys you know I would think that they
would not start right away BR Jones I
think was a better Prospect than those
guys that did not start right away so
then you're probably going into the
season with the status quo Dan more on
the left side brck Jones on the right
side and then You're Gonna Be Wondering
midseason do we want to flip brck over
there now or do we want to wait until
2025 to make that change I'm not
sure what they're thinking there but I
think that's probably the cause of the
uncertainty right it just depends on who
they get if they get a guy who a second
round pick Patrick Paul for example out
of Houston another big dude kind of
reminds me of Max Starks a little bit
um he's definitely not gonna play this
year right he he would sit so right then
it would I think it would just be like
another year brck on the right but Dan
mois in the last year of his contract we
know that he's not getting resigned we
know that that Scott has brought ER
Joneses eventually to me just the
question is does it happen week one this
year does it happen at some point during
this season or does it happen week one
in 45 it's a good question and it's it's
one I think that kind of again leaves a
little bit of open-endedness to how the
offensive line can be assembled uh Omar
Khan also talked about the centers I
didn't clip this up for the show but he
did kind of acknowledge like hey we do
we do think we have some guys on on the
roster who can you know play center you
know he talked about herig you know
being able to be there and there's
there's flexibility with with some guys
but uh you know he I think he that was
one time where he kind of buckled not
buckled but he I think he started he
kind of let like we we we're going to go
get a center guys okay we got him that
time we got to something that was like
the one time where it was like yeah all
right admit to us and I think that was
that was at least one concession he made
without like saying it full
on uh I think it's interesting because
you know Kenny Mason Cole is not a very
typical Steelers move they didn't say
that much cap you said that right away
they Nate hering makes more than Mason
Cole does
like and did all of last year like it's
not like Mason Cole's CIT with some sort
of abomination if they wanted to keep
him around as a backup right so like
they really paying themselves in a
corner at Center which is something they
really don't like to do and I think this
was Omar Khan kind of way saying like
well we don't really think we're in the
corner because we think these guys can
play some Center and by these guys I
mean Nate herig and James
Daniels I guess like I guess maybe they
feel like they don't need to find some
kind of stop Gap free agent where if
they're feeling good about getting a
Jackson Powers Johnson or Zack Frasier
or Cedric van PR early in this draft
that maybe they don't need to you know
go out ahead of time anyway and go sign
I got like Brian Allen for example was C
by Los Angeles Rams not that long ago
goty like Aaron Brewer has some ties to
Arthur Smith maybe they're just willing
to roll the dice and go into it with
looking at the draft class because of
the abilities of these guys
like what I kind of call BS is like if
you thought they were so good why did
neither of them play there last year
when Mason Cole was
struggling like like if they're really
viable options like that should have
been something that was explored last
year and it wasn't so what gives
now yeah I I'm H say pay with you I uh I
I thought that there was uh there's a
really good chance to to take center
from the door but like now like man like
like like you said un unless free agency
comes and they makes and they get like
an Aaron Brewer type of guy you know
like that maybe that that that that's a
little bit different but I just I think
this this draft screams Center and you
know as as far as something that they
are going to get and get early because
they need a guy that's going to be able
to start there and set a tone there um
but again how they get it is going to be
interesting we we're going to talk about
the combine I know some people out there
you know want want to talk about you
know hey what about what about the DBS
you talked what about the lineman who
ran we're going not less on the lineman
events we'll let all the numbers kind of
finish because actually like they're
they're doing that stuff like kind of
right now as we're recording um you know
and we we'll get to that stuff later
when when we tabulated all those numbers
but we did talk to defensive backs and I
thought there were some interesting
people there or players there that we
got to talk to that and more here on the

in the draft class I did ask about
Patrick Peterson uh I I was like you
know he was a versible guy for you and
you guys feel like extend you know
extending him in in in that versatile
role and I felt like Omar Khan's answer
again I didn't clip this up but I felt
like his answer was kind of like yeah we
like all versal guys like it was kind of
like it was I got the impression that
was like a hm he didn't say yeah Pat
like like when we we ask my other
players you know oh you know we really
appreciate Deontay Johnson we really
appreciate this guy he did not say that
about Patrick Peterson and I think they
appreciated for what he did this past
year but it maybe kind of rais my
eyebrows a little bit like are they
gonna let him go I and if they if they
do that's that's another defensive back
spot in their roster they're going to
have to fill when in in this draft class
or in free agency
it's funny because I kind
of I was a little surprised he didn't
sort of address the elephant in the room
there right like the it's the CIT right
it's it's a contract it's not the player
like he said some nice things about the
player and and I think everybody would
like to have the player back but at what
dollar figure does the player come back
and and he didn't really address that at
all so I guess
like I I don't really know how to
interpret that it kind of sounded to me
like it he was coming back even like
it's a
9.775 million cap hit for 34 year old
Patrick Peterson who's not even really a
starter anymore it's a big pill to
swallow but they are under the cap like
they don't absolutely need the space I
don't know it's in it was it was a
curious answer um that I don't think
really tells us a whole lot I I think I
probably have just as many questions
about whether or not Patrick Peterson's
going to be back I did before talking to
Omar I I I thought it was interesting
the way that he kind he gave a lot of
non answers in in his responses but also
like the way he did that but let's get
into the the DBS that we saw or will
talk to um on on Thursday at the combine
um it was safeties and Corners tight
ends as well day but tight ends much Le
you know not a need for the Steelers in
this draft in this draft class but
looking at some of the guys you know
safeties early on Corners afterwards who
were some of the guys that stood out out
to you for for the way they responded
what they talked about and you know and
some of the notes that you took a far as
is which players admitted that they were
you know they had uh you know formal
interviews with the
Steelers yeah I mean it was good we
talked a lot of the corners and the
Steelers really seem to be um I mean
there's they talked to everybody who's a
good corner I think just about like it
it was it was uh almost all the first
round options second round options third
round options uh lots of formal meetings
so I mean they they get a limited number
of those formal meetings I think it's
like 45 or 48 or something like that and
uh so the fact that they use them on
specific positions certainly is an
indication of Interest we know they're
interested some other guys like they did
not use a formal interview on Quin and
Mitchell from Toledo they also sent
Scouts to go see Toledo play twice this
year and were all over him at the Senior
Bowl so like you know just because the
guy isn't on that list doesn't mean
they're not not interested just made me
that they feel like they've already done
all the work they need to do about him
also Quin and Mitchell probably not
going to make it the Ste there a 20
right now his has
been and when he runs at the combine I
think he he's running yeah I think he is
running right yeah yeah it's supposed to
yeah and they run tomorrow night that so
or tonight tonight I don't know yeah
because this is the Friday yeah tonight
the Friday show yeah but with that that
could change a lot is when you is is
when he posts his 40 time is supposed to
change everything and if he does well
with that U with his shuttle with his
with his jumps I think that could be a
really good sign uh that that he's going
to go PR pretty high up but point to to
your point being though the Steelers
seem to be doing their due diligence to
find the best corner options out out
here in this
draft yeah I think so there's a couple
guys I I'm pretty interested by just in
talking to them um Mike sandr still from
Michigan just feels like a very Steelers
kind of guy to me he was a wide receiver
when he got to Michigan changed over to
DB said he modeled his game after Mike
Hilton would would be that kind of like
Perfect Fit Steeler slot option um I
mean I I think some of the like some of
the first round options are obviously
Terry and AR's really good I think it's
just a question like which one of those
guys might be there at 20 you know I
think that's still one of the things
that like we really need them to run to
know is like I don't really think we
have a wellestablished pecking order for
those first round corners and it seems
like if if you take that top maybe four
or five guys between like teron Arnold
Kool-Aid mckinstry Cooper deene
um and uh Nate Wiggins and
like probably one of them will be there
for the Steelers at 20 but which one is
it going to be and do they like that
player you know compared to the tackles
and the centers that we've already
talked about I think there's a lot of
uncertainty just among the league like
when go look at the mock drafts like
they're all over the place there'll be
guys at eight and then there'll be that
same guy available to the Steelers of 20
and and so I think we'll probably learn
a lot more about the corners when they
run just in terms of who might be
available but it's very clear the
Steelers are
interested yeah it's it's very clear and
I think it's going be really interesting
to see like you said where where the
pecking order Falls with these guys and
how how they continue value but like
that that was the thing that I also saw
was even with guys like Kyrie Jackson
out of Oregon not a first round corner
but maybe second maybe third round
Corner a guy that I personally like he
was great at the Senior Bowl man he was
great that that's what T like I I liked
his measurements and then like I saw
some highlights before the Senior Bowl
and I was like okay and then I saw like
you know the stuff what he was doing SE
I was like okay that's that that screams
a lot of good good things and he talked
about he said hey I haven't had a formal
interview with the Steelers but at the
Senior Bowl I talked to Mike Tom a lot
he said how much he appreciated him he
was always in my ear challenging me and
stuff like that and and it's clear that
the Steelers they are doing a lot of
hard work kind of like how they you know
they did at running back when they got
niji Harris kind of like how they did at
offensive tackle last year when they got
Brad Rick Jones but the thing is is
they're also doing this about Center
like they they were they're taking a
good look at a lot of positions that's
why I think this is a really intriguing
year that there's I think there's three
legitimate different positions that
could go that that they could take in
the first round maybe four if you
consider defensive lineman uh you know
in in in that group if like one of those
top guys falls down to 20 and they feel
like they're the best player
available yeah I think four I think four
positions in the first round and if you
throw linebacker in for the second round
I think it gets to to five
righty probably not in the second round
but maybe like yeah I mean absolutely
like that so they have a lot and wide
receiver it's a good wide receiver class
now wide receiver is not the Steelers
most prominent need and I'm disappointed
that none of us asked Omar about Allan
Robinson because I think it's pretty
clear he's probably not coming back at
the salary figure that he's listed at
but um what gives like he's still on the
team why is he still on the roster yeah
yeah right what what are they doing
there
um but if things move on from him they
do need another wide receiver it's a
deep receiver group I mean there's lots
of guys like round two round three that
I think will be probably best player
available like are likely to be best
player available when the Steelers are
drafting because of how deep it is a
receiver so there's I I don't feel like
I have been this unsure about what
they're going to do in quite some time
just in terms of like they've been
pretty easy to read the draft the last
couple years uh this year I think
there's a lot of different directions
they can go and I think that's a good
thing for them in a way you know not
it's not good that they have so many
different needs but it's good that they
that they can't be pigeon hold and that
that you know if there's someone that's
targeting the player that they really
that the Steelers really think he's like
hey this is our big board this is who we
want it's not like everyone knows it's
that player like when the Bengals traded
ahead uh you know of the of the Steelers
to get William Jackson the third that
everyone knew they really wanted a
corner those type of situations it's
just obvious what the Steelers are
trying to do so all that being said I I
think that the Steelers the the the
different options here could be really
interesting but it's also could very
much change in a couple weeks when free
agency opens up and they address certain
positions there yeah I think it's clear
they will get a center right I think
that's the one now where that's the
first round or the second round or the
third round I don't know like other than
that and I think that's a credit to the
way they've been building this team too
right like if you think about this team
coming into the draft last year it was
like well did they have a long-term
option at corner no did they have what
they felt like was a long-term option at
tackle no okay well now they went out
and got one of each last year and so now
this year like well okay if it if it's
one of the other it doesn't matter we're
in an okay place in in either spot we we
still need upgrades at both spots like d
tackle and linebacker like can they roll
can they roll Cam heward and Larry Ogen
Joby and and Cole hul and Alena Roberts
out there for another year and probably
be fine yeah but like none of those guys
are long-term options for various
reasons age injury contract whatever
like you know it's it's time to start
approaching the future but outside of
Center there isn't like a dire like need
to get a guy that's GNA play right away
on this team and I think that is a
credit to the depth that constructed and
the way that 2023 draft class is really
setting them up to have some future
success I agree there's a lot of things
that can be done in in this draft class
and to build off of that that last one
they had a lot of things that they got
going for them in that direction uh like
we said f Friday you're going to see a
lot of those DBS we talked we we talked
about safeties Corners they're going to
be testing it's going to be it's going
to be interesting there we're going to
