[Music]
just over three years ago josh and i
packed up our lives in london and moved
to the countryside
we now live in a one-room apartment
inside of a cheetah farmhouse
surrounded by only a handful of houses
plenty of greenery and lots of cows and
sheep
i often get asked both on and offline
what it was like to move from the big
city to rural sussex
how the two compare and which life i
prefer
i kept trying to find short and sweet
answers to these questions
but came to realize that those just
wouldn't do either of the places justice
[Music]
i grew up in a town in germany and
dreamt of moving to london ever since my
mum took me to visit the city when i was
14.
i was blown away
by the skyline
the buzz
double decker buses
the way people dressed and the lights of
piccadilly circus
i remember walking along the thames
after an afternoon in the british museum
[Music]
watching all the different people pass
by
and feeling so intrigued by the idea of
what it would be like to call the city
home
[Music]
six years and quite a few moves later
i finally ended up in london
the first six months went by in a blink
i shared a room
met lots of interesting new people
partied and drank a little too much and
explored as many different parts of
london as i could
the lives of londoners past are all
around you
the shore of the thames is littered with
brick and tiles
animal bones clay tobacco pipes and
pottery shards from before the romans to
the present day
the city has many different faces
it can feel chaotic
competitive and high pressure
you can pay thousands of pounds a month
to rent a boxy flat in central london
but you can also live on a cozy
houseboat on a london canal like our
friend's tom and kate do
away from tourist destinations
noisy roads and busy tube stations
[Music]
it's getting harder and harder to live
affordably in london as inequality
continues to grow
to live well in the city on a low or
even a normal income
you kind of have to find workarounds
i stayed with josh in a variety of
property guardianships
which allowed community volunteers to
stay relatively cheaply in condemned
flats with wonderful views
great neighbors
but also with sudden and sometimes quite
worrying problems and malfunctions
we made the most of it grew vegetables
on small balconies
joined a community allotment and found
lots of hidden green spaces and
waterfronts in the area
i realized that i was seeking out the
city's green spaces more and more
i was craving calm and wilderness
i also started to sometimes feel a bit
anxious on the rattling tube or when i
was in busy areas
the noise was getting to me and i was
feeling claustrophobic
so even though we had built a nice life
in london
we started to realize that our time
there was coming to an end
and when a friend told us about room
becoming available in this old tudor
farmhouse with a beautiful garden
we packed up and moved
our life has changed pretty drastically
there's more space
less noise
it's not just that life is slower here
it's more about having less external
forces determining my inner pace
[Music]
it wasn't always easy though
i really took for granted how close and
convenient everything was in london
i do miss being able to walk to a
supermarket
or have reliable and frequent public
transport or really any kind of public
transport
when we first moved here we cycled to a
dentist appointment an hour each way
through heavy rain and hail and wind
almost blowing us off our bikes
so we made the decision to get our
second hand hybrid car
there is no mobile phone reception where
we live and such unreliable internet
that sometimes i have to hike up a hill
to upload my videos
it's also been harder to meet people and
find our community
in london we were surrounded by people
our age who had similarly unusual career
paths
and diverse backgrounds and strange
lifestyles
here in our bit of the sussex
countryside there are far fewer people
and most are in different life stages
than us
we are lucky to have really lovely
neighbors though
i spend a lot more time outdoors now
we have much more space to grow our own
fruit and vegetables
and it's so satisfying to pop into the
garden before lunch or before dinner
to pick what's ripe and then plan the
meal around our own home-grown produce
[Music]
so
[Music]
in hindsight i think the buzz of the big
city filled my mind with lots of
exciting distractions
leaving room for little else
here with more breathing space i feel
full of creative energy
i've started making these videos which
have been a really fulfilling creative
outlet for me and i'm genuinely very
grateful for this online space i get to
share with all of you
[Music]
i've been feeling more creative and
inspired in general
i finally learned how to play the guitar
and to sing and to write my own music
[Music]
[Music]
dreams
living here i'm so much more aware of
the subtle changes in nature throughout
the year
and i feel a lot more in tune with the
seasons
like witnessing a pigeon builder nest
keep the eggs safe and warm
and one morning realizing that the
chicks have fletched and then watching
them take their first careful flutters
around the garden
awkward and adorable
i feel a sense of belonging
a feeling of coming home and it's not
really just about this one specific
place
i've realized that being surrounded by
nature just feels very right
like i'm just another animal in the
ecosystem
i think this way of living life
makes me feel more aware of the ongoing
ecological destruction
and of our climate breaking down
aware of what we have to lose
and even though i'm not less scared or
worried than i was before
i feel more grounded
more of an inner strength and resilience
to be part of the resistance and to
commit long term to find effective and
creative ways i can contribute
but most importantly the past three
years have been some of the happiest of
my life and i can say with confidence
that i belong in the countryside
and if anything i'm starting to crave
even wider places
maybe a wooden cabin in a forest
if you enjoyed this video

on there lately but i'm really trying to
change that
and

till the end
i will see you next time
