and this is my story I was born in a
small village outside Heather path
called guru-murthy 33 years ago oh maybe
it was 37 years ago my parents were poor
and even in our small village
most people were better off than us
somehow when I was 17 or maybe when I
was 12 my father managed to marry me to
a man I was told he would be my husband
and he would take care of me but I must
never say his name I did my duty
and we had our first daughter a few
years later I had another daughter my
husband left me I don't know why
I could not ask him because he had left
I was alone with my daughters
how would we live what would we eat I
did not know the answers to the
questions nobody else would marry me
my mother felt bad she allowed me to
work in her small field
the rain was never good but she would
always be me a few rupees
it was not enough

a few years later some people came to
our village and held a meeting I also
went to form a group we will show you
how to help yourselves how to make and
take care of money who wants to be in
the group I joined to learn how to make
money in the beginning life was not
different they told us how to save our
money by saving just one rupee every day
and when we had to borrow we borrowed
from the group not from the moneylender
it felt good to be part of the group but
feeling good is not the same as eating
food I still did not see how I could
earn more money my daughters would soon
have to be married what would I do
I was willing to work hard from morning
tonight but what hard work would people
pay me for I only knew how to cook but
everybody's wife knew how to do that so
our old biddies at a Biddy Factory the
hardly earned me a few rupees in one day
the group people brought a man to the
village come to the meeting they said
you will servant the man opened his box
and inside were lots of things we will
give you things to sell sell them in
your village or in nearby villages for
every package you sell you can keep some
money the company people showed us how
to sell the packets how to run our own
business how to educate others how to
stand on our own feet I listened
carefully
and from that moment my life changed

gained that day the day I became a shock

quickly finished the washing in the
cooking
then at seven o'clock I ran to the road
and sit in an auto taxi with my box I go
from village to village before the
people leave for the fields

them what the man told me how this soap
will help you stay free from disease how
this will help you keep your children's
clothes clean before I do not even know
these things like life boy I do not know
it is Jones I did not even know what
germs are but I learned and I teach the
others some have become Shockley dealers
to their lives have changed as well in
fact slowly the life in our village
itself is advancing when I come home and
my box is empty but the corner of my
sari will be jingling and people around
me have modern useful things in their
homes things that make their lives
cleaner healthier better every month I
sell things for ten twenty thousand
rupees my house earning has doubled
every month I get to keep 750 or even
1500 rupees but there's something more
important than money
when people see me coming to their
village they Russian crowd around me
they call me Chuck the Imam everybody
knows me I am someone now and I can
begin to have big dreams I want to have
a shut the shop with lots of packets
every day I will sin every day I will
earn money and respect my daughter's way
get married they will have happier lives
because I will make them shut the
dealers too
