Outlines

Transcripts
the irony of trying to make this video
about helping creatives get unstuck is
that it's taken about one week in
approximately 10 takes to try to film
this so oh my gosh now this is going to
be the final take mistakes and all let's
get into it now whether or not you call
yourself a creative if you are planning
on bringing your ideas to life in some
form or another this year this video is
for you hey I'm Melody oh my gosh hey
I'm Melody I'm a designer currently on a
creative sabatical I've been working on
music and now I guess this YouTube
channel if you've ever experienced
doubts along your creative Journey this
advice is just as much for me as it is
for you so in this video we're going to
dive into eight principles that I hope
will encourage you to overcome these
doubts and help you create your best
work in 2024 let's jump into it our
first principle ironically is get going
just accept the fact that your first 5
to 10 versions of whatever it is that
you're creating is going to suck once
you accept that you're going to be free
to put the first version out there and
honestly you should be a little
embarrassed about that first version
there's this whole concept oh gosh if
you if you've heard
of if you've ever heard of Ira Glass the
radio show host he has this famous
concept of the Gap and the idea is that
when we're first starting out especially
if we want to make something in art that
probably means that you have good taste
but when you first start creating stuff
there is a huge gap between the work
that you're putting out and the work
that you want to be putting out the way
for us to just like push through that is
to just start creating things and
eventually we're going to be able to get
there but we have to just push through
that initial resistance that we have to
putting our crappy versions out there if
it's of any encouragement even companies
like Airbnb their whole thing is that
they've launched seven times so no one
cares like all the first few things that
you put out there no one cares no one
remembers so just get going start
putting yourself out there now moving on
mov on to principle 2 which I think is
very important it's a fundamental truth
that remember that this art is for you I
think often times when we're starting
out we can just try to seek out what the
audience wants what's really popular but
if we are just doing that then it
creates this like infinite cycle with
nothing interesting or new being added
into the mix by chasing audience
validation You're simply going to burn
yourself out and forget why you even
started creating in the first place I
love this clip from Jacob Kier the
world's full of people trying to be cool
but the world needs warm people and the
world needs you like you the you that
you are whatever that means that might
be chaotic or weird or crazy but but
it's definitely me and so that's the one
thing I feel like I can bring and it's
the one thing I think that the world
could actually benefit from from me the
infinite Rick rubben reminds us to work
on the art that resonates with us and
that moves us so will that mean that
resonates with everyone probably not but
I think you're doing a disservice to
yourself and to the world Honestly by
dimming your light in the pursuit of
likes the world wants to hear what you
have to say and I hope you have high
conviction and confidence in bringing
that to the world now on to principle
number three which is you can only
control the inputs I love this one so
much because often times more setting
goals we will set them on metrics that
we don't even have any control over so
it's like 100,000 subscribers or getting
recognition in particular publication
the only thing that we have control over
are the activities and habits and things
that can get us there so writing four
pages a day creating two videos a week
those are the only things that are
actually in our control so the inputs
that can help us eventually achieve
those outcomes there's a design studio
called Charlie whiskey and Tango that
has a principle called buy lots of
lottery tickets what they say is you
know launching a project is always a
gamble hard work doesn't always pay off
there's no correlation between how much
time you spend working on a project and
whether or not it actually pays off
that's why we try lots of things we make
tons of stuff in once in a while we get
lucky I think holding a really loose
grip to the actual outcomes of your
project is a really healthy way to help
you not get so stuck on you know if this
project doesn't do really well it
discourages you from the next I think
thinking of them as lottery tickets just
putting like lots of stuff out there and
seeing what hits I think that's a great
way to approach this process which
brings us to the next principle quantity
is the path to Quality you've probably
heard this before but if you're early on
in your creative Journey perfectionism
can truly be the enemy the only way that
we're going to refine our ideas is to
just get going and create a lot of
iterations there's a famous story in the
art world where a pottery class is
divided into two the first group is
graded on quantity so if you make 50
pots that's an a 40 that's a b Etc the
second group is graded on the quality of
a single pot and surprisingly or not so
surprisingly the group that's graded on
quantity was the group that created the
highest quality pot and the idea is that
like every single iteration they're
learning something so they're able to
improve at a more rapid Pace than the
quality group that was probably
Paralyzed by trying to create the
perfect pot so let that be a lesson for
us let's just get going let's get those
iterations out there and that's the only
way that we're going to be able to hone
our craft and find our voice now on to
our fifth principle which is to follow
your curiosity and engage in play I've
recently been enjoying Al AB doll's
Feelgood productivity where he tells a
story about Richard feineman who's a
physics Professor who is super burned
out of physics he was sitting in the
dining hall when he noticed that the
plates as they were spinning like
wobbled in an interesting way and so he
started to like dive into that he was
curious about that he started to study
that eventually that led him to
understand something about Quantum
electrodynamics and helped him win the
Nobel Prize in physics I love this story
because I think as we go on this journey
we're going to get stuck we're going to
get burnt out but I think listening to
where our interest and our Curiosities
take us well like bring new energy to
our work you never know if you start to
follow along this path like how it might
influence your primary work or it might
inform you that you might need to shift
in a completely different direction but
in general I think we're all better off
if we are doing things with that kind of
Joy dayto day and that's just better for
the world if we're doing work that we
enjoy we're better at that work and so
yeah I love this quote too where you
can't compete with someone who is having
fun so figure out what that is for you
listen to that ensure that you're having
fun along this journey now on to
principle six which is now getting into
more of the Tactical side which is to
defend your time this is super important
because if you're trying to make serious
progress on your creative goals this
year it's not going to happen when you
work just when the inspiration strikes
or when it's convenient cuz it's never
going to be convenient so it's really
important that you take a look at your
calendar set really clear blocks of time
and you have to do your work to defend
it that's the only way that you're going
to be able to prioritize this work I
love a story about Stephen King who is a
super prolific writer but he's notorious
about having a really disciplined and
rigid schedule to focus on his writing
so what he does is every morning he
wakes up at the same time sits at the
same desk where it's arranged in the
same way and it's like that's how he
gets his writing done every single day
and I was surprised when I heard this at
first cuz it felt like so rigid to do
something as
free as art what he's doing is he's
removing all of these micro decisions
and distractions in order to actually
Focus his energy on the thing that's
most important which is the work the
creative work so think about what that
is for you um you know try to remove all
those decisions by setting time aside
ahead of time on your calendar you're
already getting rid of that as a
decision right if you create an
environment or a space where you do your
work that removes a lot of decisions but
you got to defend it to ensure that
you're able to dedicate adequate time to
make progress on your creative goals oh
one last thing here I know I'm like so
many stories but I love love love this
quote from Joanie I on what he learned
from Steve Jobs and what he said is what
Focus means is saying no to something
that with every bone in your body you
think is a phenomenal idea you wake up
thinking about it but you say no to it
because you are focusing on something
else so that is the amount of focus that
you need to bring to your work if you're
serious about creating your best work
this here now on to principle 7 which I
believe will help you do exactly this
which is to seek community and
accountability this isn't going to be an
easy journey and it's probably going to
be a long one so I think seeking out the
people who are either fellow creatives
or are friends that just like bring you
energy just making sure you're spending
time with these people regularly to help
encourage you but also help keep you
accountable I think is a really
important and great way to ensure that
you are making progress towards your
goals a great way to do this is to set
regular check-ins with these folks so I
personally have a weekly accountability
partner and a monthly but these friends
are doing very different things from
what I'm doing the main thing here is
that everyone is sort of working on
creating something putting it out into
the world and so by setting these
regular check-ins I'm honestly like have
rushed to try to get something out um
because I knew that I would have a
check-in with this friend and so I think
that would be a great way to help you
make progress towards your creative
goals lastly uh but most importantly is
that this is going to take time I think
just with my background having work in
Tech I just want to see results
immediately like I said that Gap I want
that Gap to be gone like I want my art
to like be amazing today but we all have
to exercise patience this is going to be
a long game you need to put a lot of
stuff out there before you're able to
even really find your voice Miles Davis
has this quote you know sometimes it
takes a really long time to sound like
ourselves the only way we're going to be
able to get there again is just by
continuously putting stuff out there and
just being patient the other thing is
that we can maybe compare ourselves to
other friends that are reaping successes
during this time um but the reality is
that everyone is in a different season
in terms of their creative Journey right
some people are going to be in their
harvest season but you don't even know
what it took them like 10 years ago what
seeds they planted right in order for
them to be able to reap what they're
reaping today so at this point like you
might be in your tilling season you
might be sewing the seeds you might be
in the growth season or you might be in
the harvest season for me like I feel
like I'm still even in the tilling
season like and I'm just starting to
plant the seeds so everyone's in a
different season take that pressure off
that you need to be seeing results for
things right away it's going to take
time and I hope that helps you relieve
any sort of pressure you feel to see
results immediately now as we Embark or
continue along our creative Journeys in
2024 I hope these eight principles will
serve as an encouragement for you to
help you find your unique voice to stay
committed to your craft and hopefully
find joy in the process if you like this
video and you'd like to see more content
like this be sure to like And subscribe
to this channel which probably only has
five subscribers at this point I've also
created a little graphic with these
eight principles that I don't know you
can use as or desktop wallpaper or
whatever that's what my friend did um so
I'll put a link to that in the
description box I'm super excited to
hear about all the projects that you
might be working on so feel free to drop
that in the comments and yeah I will be
over here rooting for you thanks for
watching this video and until next
time I feel like it's going to happen
again did I say that right okay
