Q & A
What is the main topic of the video by Dr. Eric Westman?
-The main topic of the video is to review and debunk nutritional information online, specifically addressing the claims made by a carnivore influencer known as 'steak and butter gal' and discussing the carnivore diet's effects on health.
What is the 7-Day no sugar challenge mentioned in the video?
-The 7-Day no sugar challenge is an initiative from adapt Your Life Academy, aiming to help participants jump start better health by cutting out all sources of added sugar and limiting carbs to 150g per day for a week.
Why do some people criticize the carnivore diet according to the video?
-Some people criticize the carnivore diet because they believe it is harmful, dangerous, and based on misinformation. They argue that the diet's proponents are lying about its benefits and that it is detrimental to people's health.
What is Dr. Westman's stance on the carnivore diet's effect on bowel movements?
-Dr. Westman suggests that a reduction in bowel movements on a carnivore diet is not necessarily a medical concern unless accompanied by hard stools or difficulty passing them. He explains that carnivores in the wild do not have issues with bowel movements despite not consuming fiber.
How does Dr. Westman explain the reduction in bowel gas when people switch to a low carb diet?
-Dr. Westman explains that a reduction in bowel gas when switching to a low carb diet is due to a decrease in bacteria and the body using food more efficiently. He also mentions that when people consume carbohydrates, the bacteria break them down, creating gas, which is not the case with a carnivore diet.
What is the 'Buddha belly' mentioned in the video, and how is it related to the carnivore diet?
-The 'Buddha belly' refers to bloating and is related to the fermentation process that occurs when consuming carbohydrates, leading to gas production. Dr. Westman suggests that reducing carbohydrates can lead to a decrease in belly size due to less bowel gas.

-Dr. Westman verifies the claims by referencing his own clinical experiences and scientific studies, such as the resolution of PCOS symptoms and the improvement in acne, which are supported by anecdotal evidence and some research in the field.
Outlines
🥩 Debunking Misconceptions about the Carnivore Diet
Dr. Eric Westman addresses the backlash faced by a carnivore diet influencer, known as 'steak and butter gal,' who has been criticized for promoting potentially harmful dietary practices. He defends her claims, explaining that reduced bowel movements on a carnivore diet are normal due to increased body fat utilization and more efficient food processing by the body. Dr. Westman also counters accusations of dishonesty by sharing his own experiences and scientific understanding of low-carb and carnivore diets, emphasizing that consuming meat and fat without fiber does not hinder digestion as evidenced by the natural diet of carnivorous animals.
🌿 The Impact of Diet on Health and Body Image
The paragraph discusses the broader implications of diet on health and body image, particularly for women. It touches on the psychological effects of restrictive dieting and the cycle of binging and purging that can result from it. The speaker advocates for a return to real, unprocessed foods and warns against the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods. The discussion also includes the physical changes that can occur when adopting a low-carb or carnivore diet, such as reduced bloating and flatter stomachs due to decreased bowel gas from fewer carbohydrates.
🦁 Lessons from Carnivorous Wildlife and Their Diets
Dr. Westman shares insights from a conversation with a researcher who studied lions in South Africa, highlighting the natural carnivorous diet of these animals. He uses this as a point of comparison to challenge the notion that frequent bowel movements are necessary for health, suggesting that the frequency of bowel movements is not a reliable indicator of diet quality. The paragraph also delves into the benefits of a carnivore diet for certain health conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and the personal experiences of individuals who have found relief from symptoms by adopting such a diet.
🧈 The Role of High-Fat Foods in Health and Fertility
This section focuses on the role of high-fat foods, particularly butter, in the context of the carnivore diet. It discusses how consuming large amounts of butter can be part of a successful dietary approach for some individuals, while cautioning that it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with diabetes or weight loss goals. The speaker also addresses the potential for the carnivore diet to help with menstrual regularity and fertility issues, drawing from both anecdotal evidence and scientific studies. The importance of considering individual dietary needs and preferences is emphasized.
📚 Exploring Alternatives to the Carnivore Diet
The final paragraph summarizes the video's content and offers alternative approaches to the carnivore diet for those who may not find it sustainable or enjoyable. It suggests that while the carnivore diet can have beneficial effects for some, there are other low-carb, high-fat options that can also support health goals. The speaker encourages viewers to explore different dietary approaches and to engage with scientific research to make informed decisions about their health. The paragraph concludes with a call to action for viewers to share their experiences and to stay connected with the speaker's content for further insights.

Transcripts
has a prominent carnivore influencer
been lying all this
[Music]
time hi I'm Dr Eric Westman and welcome
to my channel where I review and debunk
nutritional information online in this
video from steak and butter gal I've
done some videos reacting to her videos
before she basically has been getting a
lot of trolling a lot of flak from the
internet and deals with that in this
video be sure to listen to the end when
you hear my final thoughts I want to
invite you to a free 7-Day no sugar
challenge from adapt Your Life Academy
this is the perfect jump start toward
Better Health the goal of this challenge
is to cut out all sources of added sugar
for 7 days and to limit your carbs to
150 g per day we will give you the full
list of allowed
foods making just one change to your
diet eliminating sugar may not seem like
a big step but you'll be amazed at the
impact this can have on your physical
and mental well-being sign up to the
challenge below it's
free I get asked this question every
single day and it usually isn't in the
form of a question it usually is in the
form of a hate comment a naysayer type
of message DM email these people are
coming at me saying that what I am
spreading and sharing about the
carnivore diet is harmful dangerous
misinformation and it's dangerous to
People's Health these people truly
believe that I'm lying that I'm straight
up lying on the internet let me just
show you the typical type of message
that I get well you know I wonder if a
lot of these comments are are not really
people but they're Bots they're they're
fake people with being sent by who knows
uh what sort of agency or whoever you
know wants you not to eat meat for
example but let's see some of the
trolling that steak and butter gal gets
there is no way she is pooping with zero
fiber she's definitely lying it's been 5
and 1/2 years of eating nothing but
fatty meat butter eggs some seafood here
and there some pastored chicken here and
there I just poop less I definitely
don't poop every day but to most people
that's a concern they're going to say oh
my gosh you don't poop every day pooping
every day first thing in the morning is
the ultimate sign of health and good
digestion well certainly I've heard that
from people who are selling products for
you probiotics or fiber supplements so
that you have the illusion that you're
healthier because you're generating more
bowel movement it's occurred to me since
I've been teaching a low carb diet not
quite carnivore it's carnivore like
people do eat you know eat less they uh
automatically because they're burning
their body fat the way that's the way we
teach it and then they do have less
waste meaning there are fewer bowel
movements the bow bowel Mass goes down
and part of that is because the bacteria
go down and part of that is just because
your body is using the food more
efficiently if you watched one of my
videos before where I reacted to a young
man who had an ostomy meaning he his
bowel movements went into a bag he when
he eats meat he never sees any meat in
the bag but when he eats vegetables he
sees the vegetables in the bag because
they're not digested by humans we don't
have cellulase to break down
cellulose so there's this whole hoopla
about having fiber to be able to poop
well you know the Common Sense part of
the face validity meaning just look
around you and do animals that don't
have fiber to carnivores are they able
to poop I mean do they ever have trouble
in the wild or you know that's kind of
the Common Sense sort of looking at it
so doesn't surprise me that she has
eaten this way and has not needed fiber
supplements and so if you do poop less
often it's not a medical concern but if
you have hard stools or hard to pass
stools that is a medical concern and yes
I've seen people have that issue on any
type of diet even a low carb diet so
there are ways to manage that if it
happens to you I just want to understand
how I ate so healthy and so clean and
even calories restricted and Portion
controlled yet I still looked like a
Buddha I see so many young women make
themselves suffer punish themselves by
force fasting after they binge you
create this brutal vicious cycle of
eating so much junk food creating this
cycle of feeling this shame and guilt
and forcing yourself to fast or just
straight up starving yourself because
you feel so bad yet you still want to
look good and that's because we're just
not eating the right food Foods I've
walked it through my own teenage years
in my early 20s I'm now 27 years young I
just want to help as many women as
possible out there of all ages it's
never too late to turn your life around
and to get healthy look fit feel amazing
well a lot of things don't pack in there
I I like the comment about eating real
foods and to not getting caught up in
the junk food the processed food the the
binging that happens with those types of
foods specifically I worked at a diet
and fitness center years ago the Duke
diet and fitness center people would
come from all over the world to Durham
North Carolina to be at this fitness
center and a binge for someone who would
come to this kind of program was not
just one large pizza pizzas a binge was
two large pizzas at a sitting one
sitting so yeah binging the food and
then then punishing yourself by starving
learn early in life pleased and then
teach your children your grandchildren
that what you eat really matters and
this processed food it's called ultr
processed food now is not healthy and it
creates these Vicious Cycles there was
another comment she mentioned about why
she has the Buddha belly the the bloat
and I think it's the bacteria I think
it's the fermentation that happens and
the gas that's created when you eat
carbohydrates often people get a
reduction in their their belly size
within just a few days because the when
they go on a low carb di because the
bowel gas goes down so the inches
actually go down pretty quickly and have
you had that experience please let me
know that if you start eating carbs
again your bowel gas starts to as
evidenced by flatulence that you'll
start having more flatus so having more
bow gas is a sign that you had some
carbs in fact among my patients the
small straw pole that I've taken
informally is that the carbs are kind of
detected by the the gas and in the that
you pass so passing gas becomes sort of
a what did I have oh yeah I had some
carbs yesterday sort of that's because
the bacteria Chomp on the carbs and
create the gas that doesn't happen if
you're just doing a carnivore diet you
know through the years there there's
some organizations that have kind of
picked up on this low carb message and
one of them is the anti flatulence
organizations it's it's you know just
users who who create this who had
trouble with flatulence and they've
known for a long time that you want to
reduce the the the complex carbohydrates
and the sugars because these are the
things in the diet that creates the gas
and no you don't need to add fiber to
have proper bow movements but especially
for my young women who are struggling
with their weight their self-esteem
their looks their skin their body image
the best and first place you should
start is think about what you're eating
right now so acne I've seen that go away
just like that picture she's not lying I
poop two times a week twice a week is
the maximum amount of times that I
personally go number two on the regular
when I'm having fatty breed meat my
butter my eggs and as much as I want to
eat with these Foods I only poop twice a
week and this says so much when I'm
pooping only two times a week and I'm
eating as much as I want and my belly is
flat then it just goes to show that
pretty much everything that I'm feeding
my body and eating is fully digested
fully absorbed well it's funny to hear
her talk about number two and and
farting and all that and and be having
having fun with it so you know when you
think about it do lions and dogs and all
do they have toilet paper I I mean they
don't uh so a carnivore living in the
wild of course you there may be some
other way to get the the feal matter off
the the the bottom but yeah having two
bowel movements a week is just fine I I
think of it as taking out the trash
rather than detoxifying there's a lot of
Internet teaching where you have to
detoxify if your bowel movements don't
move all of the toxins are building up
and and people get High colonics to to
to clean themselves out and I I just
never really bought into that so it
doesn't matter how often you poop I even
met someone who all of her life poops
once a week now it might not seem right
for you that's okay and uh in fact I'd
like to see if if you can find a paper
that shows the frequency of of pooping
but wait that would be among those who
eat carbs so it may not apply to this um
this group of people you know I once had
an hour to meet with a person who
studied lions in South Africa it was one
of the conferences that Professor
Timothy noes put on in Cape Town and I
so I had a lunch hour to be able to pick
his brain about carnivores the Lions who
are actually in the wild and I remember
a National Geographic where they they
collected the urine of baboons in the
trees by putting down a tarp and that
during certain time times of the year
they had ketones and so I wondered you
know how would you study lions in the
wild and learn about their eating
behavior and that they yes they eat meat
and and and I asked well do you know how
often they poop and you know off the top
of the head he didn't he didn't know I
guess it's not a question that lion
experts want to know but and yet people
are emulating what carnivores do it
having a bowel movement less often and
yes you can have normal bowel move ments
without fiber is not lying oo I haven't
had a period in seven months could
carnivore help I suffered with no period
for 2 years and this happened year five
and six of being vegan I was vegan for a
total of six years straight literally
the only thing that I did to bring back
my period was to go carnivore let me say
that I see that as well on low carb high
fat or low carb keto or with a little
bit of vegetable matter it's not just a
carnivore diet that can do it and this
is an important point there are a lot of
people who get their entrance into the
low carb world through the carnivore
door and yes it may work or you might
have your entrance into the low carb
keto world through the intermittent
fasting door if you will but it's not
the only way to do things and so if one
of these becomes too hard to do there
are other methods that work learn about
other uh you know if you are learning
learning an approach where it says you
can't have coffee because you know Lions
don't drink coffee in the wilderness
that's okay there there are other
approaches that keep the carbs really
low that allow you to have coffee so you
don't have to you know go in the
carnivore door and then out back to the
processed food World explore the other
low carb options low carb high fat
carnivore is options if you will before
throwing the baby out with the bath
water so to speak do you have to go
high-fat carnivore
I don't think you have to I think what's
more important is you start carnivore
the way that is sustainable and
enjoyable more than anything else how
you approach get yourself into this
carnivore lifestyle is going to be very
very crucial to how longterm you can
stick to it well so some metabolic
issues like PCOS is a cause of abnormal
menstrual cycles even
infertility polycystic ovary syndrome or
PCOS and I see people who fail the inv
vitro the the hormonal fertility kinds
of treatments and they say well all
that's left to do is go lose weight so
they end up in my office and they do a
keto carnivore is kind of diet and the
periods come back and people get
pregnant I still get a postcard every
Christmas from one patient whose child
is growing and says you know thank you
Dr Westman for helping us have the baby
because the the periods came back and
she became fertile and so carnivore can
help PCOS so can other methods other uh
things that are get better are you know
again you probably wouldn't believe it
uh and you would think that I'm lying
and or that she's lying and know these
are actually real things that can happen
I ate at least a full stick of butter
let me show you one stick in the US is
exactly eight tablespoons and that's
exactly half a cup of full fat full
animal fat of butter okay this one is by
tilok it's the only one that I can find
here in Montana unsalted I like unsalted
just because it's delicious and it makes
me feel my best I scarf it down at least
one of these every single day when I
first started carnivore five and a half
years ago some days though um I would
eat two full sticks of butter so as a
word on that not everyone does that not
everyone has to and and consider the
source again so that if you're you're
trying to reverse diabetes trying to
lose weight I don't want you having
sticks of butter even though this
influencer is saying this is how she did
it it was fine for her but it's not
going to be advantageous for weight loss
for reversal of diabetes and uh in our
studies we never allowed or recommended
well I suppose we wouldn't necessarily
know if someone did this they would tell
us but we didn't recommend having sticks
of butter on your or steak for example
so always consider the source steak and
butter gal did not have to have a major
diabetes reversal although it's possible
that you could have butter in the
context of other things that you eat and
reverse diabetes because butter which is
fat doesn't raise the blood glucose so
if you go from a high carb diet where
the carbohydrates are raising the blood
sugar remember you only have five grams
of sugar in the bloodstream at any given
moment butter is not going to raise the
blood sugar but these other Foods the
other carbs will about the uh word about
the electroly supplementation I usually
say sodium or or salt and you can get
salt through bullon bullon cubes or
crystals or paste you can get magnesium
through magnesium pills or magnesium
milk of magnesia a liquid form of
magnesium and then potassium I don't
think is a big uh electrolyte of concern
unless you're on a diuretic pill or
other medication that has you deplete
potassium but certainly that product
element is very popular it was created
by someone in the the Paleo Primal
Community um so they're very sensitive
to additives recently I'm getting a lot
of people coming to me at Duke telling
me their stories about carnivore diet
and tell me your stories down below
please in the comments and one person
actually who brought me the flavored
element product and said I can't use
these I'm sensitive to them it was
someone who found relief from lots of
symptoms following a carnivore diet and
so the idea of getting one that's not
flavored not sweetened may be a good
idea if you have that level of food
sensitivity and I think carnivore is
fixing a lot of food sensitivities that
people had or or maybe knew about uh but
it's a very strict Elimination Diet you
have to think of it that way and it took
5 lounds of meat plus a full stick of
butter at least so I honored my Hunger I
know it sounds ridiculous that's how I
brought back my period okay our paper on
PCOS and a low carb diet was published
in I think 2005 or 2007 it was a proof
of concept paper meaning we took a dozen
or so people no this one was actually F
no fatty liver was five
proof proof of concept the other one had
about 11 women I believe PCOS the reason
I just printed these out in the office
for someone who had these issues and so
the PCOS resolution happens pretty fast
and it can be changing the hormonal milu
meaning the the ability of the female
body to ovulate and have menstrual
cycles and so I can verify that that's
not a lie
so I guess the upshot is is Stak and
butter gal is not lying about the
carnivore diet although getting lots of
troll activity and and saying she must
be lying but I can vouch for the fact
that this kind of effect can happen of
course without scientific papers or or
lots and lots of people in cohort
studies we don't know the percentage of
folks will have this result although
it's pretty reliable we don't know the
side effect profile that might happen
and so I'm still advocating for
scientific evaluation and studies of a
carnivore Diet before I can recommend it
with the same kind of policy support
that I can for the diet that that we
recommend the low carb high fat diet
because we had papers to support it
there's a book called The PCOS plan
written uh by Dr pagona and um and Jason
fun that talks about PCOS and why
carbohydrates and Insulin are involved
there if you need something to read in
more detail about PCOS itself the acne
resolution that she had it's kind of off
the radar of of clinical dermatologists
and yet the dermatologists who write
books about acne say avoid sugar and in
fact populations where there's no sugar
have no acne and and actually in
adolescence there's no teenage acne in
populations that don't have sugar which
is fascinating I learned that from a
doctor at Duke who came up to me after a
grand rounds and part of what he did in
his career was to travel to areas to
help underserved populations and one
group he traveled to had no acne because
they had no sugar in the diet so no
she's not lying about carnivore do you
have to do a carnivore diet no um if
you're tired of carnivore there are
other options that you can do I hope
