hey what's up everyone it's Kay have you
ever wondered what would be the minimum
English fluency you need to have to
become a software developer here in
Canada
today I'll be answering to the question
by me speaking English throughout this
video because speaking in English is
always the good idea except for me
having a hard time editing this video
but that's not your business right so
let us get started
to get started this topic from the
conclusion my personal conclusion is
that you don't need to have really
fluent English to become a software
developer especially here in Vancouver
there are several reasons why but I
think the biggest reason why is that as
a software developer our job is to
deliver the high quality software to
customer or company or companies clients
and it doesn't require you to good
English to make it possible it's not
applicable
um if the role you are looking for is
somewhere like PM or designer
or manager even because you need to have
lots of conversations with business side
people but for developers as an IC which
means individual contributor you don't
really have to have these
um intense English speaking and a
listening situation all the time and it
is yeah if you are software developer
then you might know or already but
um the less time you have to talk to
people the better
because it can be more productive you
can secure your time writing your code
right so speaking is not the top
priority that's the first reason why you
don't have to have super fluent English
and second is that
you need to have some certain level of
English but it's not about fluency but
you definitely need to be able to write
in real English because every single
asynchronous communication like leaving
a text or leaving the wiki or
documentation happens over texts of
course you can use any tools like deep
well or Google Translation do you
understand what it is and you can I'm
not have your Japanese and translate it
to English but you need to have bare
minimum
level or skill of English that you can
understand if the sentence spit out
by these tools are right or wrong I've
seen so many people who've been using
these tools and they are still pretty
much fine so don't be so afraid of
speaking English or reading or writing
in English here in Canada because people
are kinda graceful about your grammar
errors
they don't really
be a neat picky about your English
especially in the comment
if there are some typos or sentences
error or grammar grammar errors
happening in the real documentation or
um yeah close comment then you might get
some feedback from them but you'll get
used to it and nobody expects your
perfect English from the first place
because you obviously are immigrants
right and companies aware of the
trade-off of having a developer who's
really good at writing a code but not so
much about
education AKA soft skill but then you
can work on this part as a software
developer and
become a good communicator even though
you guys are speaking English right so
that part you can work on it but it's
not definitely a mandatory or
requirement for you to be a software
developer to getting into industry
with that being said
as long as you don't mind having a lower
Singularity level
a lower position than you expect for the
first job here in Canada that you should
be okay
why is that happening which is because
during an interview that's the only time
you can prove your skill right but if
your English is limited then it's really
hard for you to prove yourself so that
you cannot get the best with the chances
are quite High the chances that you
cannot perform
hundred percent
so people can misinterpret your messages
or
um
you might have some like different
conversation with them that
um they may feel like
you need to like work on some you know
specific ticking or terms but you
actually know about you just couldn't
explain in English so that kind of
situation might happen and I think that
is something you need to accept
especially for the first time job in
abroad as long as you're outside of
Japan that might happen and
yeah that is it that's uh there are the
reasons that I think you don't have to
have a little different English but
still though if you want to progress
your career here in Canada English is
mandatory
what I mean by that is
if you can make the flu and if you can
make a smooth conversation with your
colleagues then
you can take lots of initiatives to spin
up your
lots of initiatives to like start your
projects in a way that they want right
if you can take these leads then your
promotion or carry progress will be much
smoother than yourself struggling
speaking in English so don't set the bar
too high to get in but once you get in
definitely recommend you to
put much more effort than you think you
need to progress your career because
that's the best way for immigrants to
progress I believe Japanese developers
have such a great hard skill like
writing a code in every documentation
kind of stuff but for the soft skill
that's definitely you need to learn and
experience
here in Canada or in an international
environment so that you're going to be
good at it and trust me salary range is
completely different if you compare to
North America and Japan so even though
you are getting like lower position your
study is going to be okay compared to
Japanese one so yeah that's pretty much
everything I wanted to say today but if
you have any questions about
um yeah if you need any advice then I
think I'm gonna drop my Twitter Link in
this video below so feel free to hit me
up and I would love to answer your
questions and potentially I can
definitely like you know help you
setting up a goals to come to Canada or
Vancouver that yeah because I I want to
see my Japanese developers thriving in
Canada because I've seen like so many
Indians and Chinese and some other
people from all over the world thriving
but I still see like much less Japanese
working as a software developer here in
Vancouver so let's make it happen all
right with that being said I think I'm
gonna conclude this video today thanks
for watching everyone
see you next time
