Hello everybody and welcome to LearnAmo! Following the success of our amazing

video-summary on the Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) by Dante,

we decided to continue our series on Italian literature with "I Promessi Sposi" (The Betrothed),

a masterpiece by Alessandro Manzoni!

Let's get it started! "I Promessi Sposi" is a work released for the first time

in 1827 and composed by 38 chapters, that may not seem

so many... until you realize how long they are!

In short, it's not a reading you can do in two days but, after all, which masterpiece is?

That charming rascal of Manzoni, in order to give his work more depth and realism

(otherwise it would have been only the work of a boy), he preferred not

to pass it as his own, but

to make up he found an ancient unnamed manuscript and transcribed it!

The events narrated in "I Promessi Sposi" are the transcription of true events

(nobody believes that) dating back to the 17th century, when a great part of Italy

was under Spanish rule.

But let's get to the point: what happens in this novel?

It all starts

on a branch of the Como lake, where

Don Abbondio, a priest who is even afraid of a fly, is out for a walk

before being stopped by I Bravi (thugs) (who are not good guys at all!)

These two tell him he must not celebrate the wedding,

for no reason at all, between Lucia Mondella and Renzo Tramaglino,

our lovebirds, the main characters of the story.

"- Questo matrimonio non s'ha da fare!" (This wedding is not happening!) I Bravi takes order fro their boss,

a certain Don Rodrigo [music]...

a spoiled

and foolish squire who thinks it's all due to him!

Don Rodrigo saw Lucia by accident and,

dazzled by her beauty (so hot!), decided to have her all for himself and therefore preventing the marriage

with Renzo!

Don Abbondio,

intimidated by I Bravi, agrees not to celebrate the wedding between Renzo and Lucia:

runs home, tells

everything to Perpetua and goes to sleep.

The day after, looking forward his first wedding night

Renzo comes up to Don Abbondio, but the latter, in order to take time, says he doesn't feel very well.

Renzo is a good guy

(for real this time) but he's not dumb!

Sensing that there's something isn't right,

he can glean from Don Abbondio and

Perpetua that Don Rodrigo won't let the marriage with Lucia to happen.

Renzo, who is mad like a beast,

meets Lucia who's wearing her wedding dress! (You better take it off and save it dear) and together

they announce that the wedding is

postponed because the priest is ill. Dealing with a crying Lucia and a furious Renzo,

her mother suggests to contact Azzeccagarbugli,

an attorney who is supposed to solve problems but who actually causes more of them and when he

realizes that Don Rodrigo is involved, he washes his hands and sends Renzo away! (Wow,

thanks a lot, very useful! Did you buy your degree?)

Then the hopes of the two lovebirds are in the hands of Fra Cristoforo,

a kindhearted merchant's son, who never tolerated any form of injustice

and who took his vows after killing a man in a duel.

Fra Cristoforo, who doesn't have a flaky bone in him, unlike Don Abbondio,

wants to be the hero of the situation and goes to talk to Don Rodrigo to settle the matter.

But Don Rodrigo won't change his mind so Fra Cristoforo threatens him by saying he will suffer the Divine Punishment,

and then leaves. (Ok,

you're very useful too, bro...)

Then the two lovebirds Renzo and Lucia try to ambush Don Abbondio to take hi off guard!

(In fact, professing their mutual love before a priest and two witnesses seems to be enough to make a marriage official.

If it were so easy!) Don Abbondio,

understanding the intentions of the two lovebirds,

starts screaming and the plan fails.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Don Rodrigo wants to kidnap Lucia, so the two lovebirds

realize that's better for them to leave.

Renzo goes to Milan while Lucia and her mother go to Monza.

Hence Gertrude is introduced, namely "la monaca di Monza" (nun of Monza),

a nun... who's has very little spirituality!

In fact, forced by her father to take the vows,

once in the monastery, she started getting off with the degenerate Egidio!

Ok, but that's another story. The nun Monza

agrees to accommodate Lucia and her mother and once she is alone with Lucia, she has the

girl tell her some spicy stories! (Wow Gertrude!)

But let's move to Milan.

There's a popular uprising caused

by the shocking increasing of the price of bread,

but Renzo, reckless of danger, does a little sightseeing of the city.

Needless to say: he ends up being involved in the riots and

trying to be the hero of the situation, makes a mess and risks to be arrested too, but since he's

the protagonist, he always manages to sneak away and moves in with his cousin in Bergamo.

Meanwhile, Don Rodrigo, after discovering where Lucia is, brings out the "big guns" to finally be able

to kidnap her.

With "Big guns" we refer to a guy whose true name is unknown and we are going to call:

l'Innominato! (the Unnamed)

L' Innominato, with the complicity of the lover of the nun of Monza,

manages to have Lucia kidnapped. Lucia is desperate, so what will she do? Will she try to run away?

No! She makes a chastity vow: she won't get married if God helps her

escape!

So this is where l'Innominato, who in his life has done all sorts of things,

starts expressing remorse and not only he decides to free his hostage, but also to give her a lot of money as a dowry!

Meanwhile, Renzo is still at his cousin's in Bergamo and receives half of the dowry by Lucia's mother

(yeah), but also the news about the vow of chastity (bip).

After a few months, as if all this grind wasn't enough,

the complicate the situation,

the plague arrives!

(No, that's not the Plague!) Facing pustules,

suffering and

lazzaretti, a lot of people get sick and some of them die.

Don Rodrigo is stricken by the plague and is transferred to the lazzaretto.

Even Renzo gets infected by the plague, but

survives, just like Don Abbondio and Lucia. And in the lazzaretto everybody meets, in the end.

Renzo finds Lucia, but he won't accept her vow!

Luckily for him, the vow is dissolved because: "you can't make a vow that includes another person's will!"

(Wow, I don't know what's weaker, this vow or my arms when I do push-ups)

Once they're back in their country, the two lovebirds get married and they live happily ever after!
