Q & A

  • What cars are involved in the project?

-There are two Skoda Octavia vRS cars - one red and one white. There is also an RS3 engine and gearbox that will be going into the red Octavia.

  • What is the goal of the project?

-The goal is to take the good RS3 engine and put it into the red Octavia vRS to improve its performance. The original engine in the red Octavia was bad.

  • What damage did the RS3 engine have?

-The RS3 engine had some fire damage, a damaged turbo, damaged rocker covers and engine mounts. Some new parts will need to be ordered.

  • Why can't the GTR project proceed at the moment?

-The GTR needs to go on a jig to be worked on but there is not enough space in the workshop. It is waiting for another local shop that has space on their jig.

  • What accessories are being removed to get the engine out of the white Octavia?

-The front bumper, wings, wheel liners, slam panel and airbox are being removed to improve access to take the engine out through the front of the car.

  • How will the battery be relocated?

-Because the RS3 engine is larger, the battery will likely need to be moved to the boot for more space.

😃 Introducing the Octavia VRS engine swap project

The narrator provides an overview of the Octavia VRS engine swap project involving two Octavias. The goal is to take the good RS3 engine from the damaged red Octavia and transplant it into the white Octavia with the broken engine.

05:03

👷‍♂️ Removing damaged parts from the RS3 engine

The narrator begins disassembling the damaged RS3 engine from the red Octavia to assess what needs replacing. The turbo and exhaust components are found to be damaged and will need replacing.

10:03

🚚 Bringing the white Octavia into the workshop

The white Octavia with the broken engine is brought into the workshop. The front end damage is assessed and found to be mostly superficial. The engine will be removed by taking off the front end of the car.

15:04

😥 Discovering the engine difference between the Octavias

While starting to remove the engine from the white Octavia, the narrator discovers the engine code is completely different than the RS3 engine. This presents a major potential compatibility issue.

Keywords

💡Engine swap

The main activity in the video is performing an engine swap on an Audi RS3 by taking the engine from a crashed RS3 and putting it into an Octavia vRS. This complex process involves removing the original engine from the Octavia, prepping the RS3 engine by replacing damaged parts, and then installing the upgraded RS3 engine into the Octavia chassis.

💡Damaged parts

Since the RS3 engine came from a crashed car, it has some damaged components like the turbo, rocker cover, engine mounts etc. These all need to be replaced with new OEM parts before the engine can be transplanted into the Octavia.

💡Adapter pipes

Because the project is upgrading the Octavia with the newer RS3 engine, some adapter pipes are needed to connect the intake and oil lines from the new engine to fit the Octavia chassis and powertrain.

💡Facelift

The RS3 received a facelift update, so some of its parts are different. This requires sourcing the right facelift parts like the intake, intercooler pipes, and turbo that are compatible with the engine upgrade.

💡Engine codes

The narrator discovers the Octavia vRS engine has a different engine code than the RS3 engine. This could indicate compatibility issues, so more research is needed to see if the engines can be swapped.

💡Front end removal

To extract the original vRS engine and install the upgraded RS3 engine, the front bumper, lights, crash bars, and other components are removed to allow access through the front of the car.

💡Battery relocation

Because the new RS3 engine is larger, the battery has to be moved from its original location on top of the transmission to the rear boot area to make space.

💡Unexpected problems

Swapping engines is complex and the narrator explains there will likely be unexpected problems along the way. This highlights the troubleshooting nature required for custom powertrain upgrades.

💡Parts ordering

Many new OEM and aftermarket parts need to be ordered to facilitate the engine transplant and get the RS3 engine ready for install. There is a constant process of identifying and sourcing parts.

💡Build series

This engine swap is an ongoing, multi-video build series. Viewers are directed to watch previous episodes to understand the full context and progress of the ambitious project.

Highlights

The project involves swapping an RS3 engine into an Octavia vRS to upgrade its performance

The RS3 engine comes from a damaged car so needs repaired and new parts ordered before fitting

The original Octavia engine will be moved to another Octavia that will be sold to help fund the project

The RS3 engine has an aluminum block instead of iron, and a better turbo allowing for more power gains when tuned

The original turbo is damaged and unserviceable so will be replaced with the RS3 "dazer" turbo

Adapter pipes and a new actuator are needed for the dazer turbo install, costing over £250

The engine will be removed through the front of the car after removing damaged body panels

There is surprisingly little damage to the Octavia apart from easily repairable body panels

The battery tray needs removed as the RS3 engine is bigger and may need the battery relocated

The engine codes between the RS3 donor engine and Octavia are completely different

This engine code difference may cause compatibility issues with swapping parts between engines

Videos will aim to be weekly during the project build despite delays waiting for parts

This is the first major issue holding up progress but is common with complex projects

The videos give an inside look at the realities and challenges with engine swap projects

Additional videos will help fill time during delays to keep providing content

play00:00

we are back on the scoda Octavia vrs3

play00:03

project guys we have one Octavia we have

play00:05

two octavias we have an RS3 engine and

play00:07

gearbox with subframe as well and we've

play00:10

got a broken Octavia vrs 2 L engine too

play00:13

now for those of you new to the channel

play00:14

That haven't seen this video before go

play00:16

click in the top right hand corner go

play00:17

watch the project up to date so you

play00:19

understand what I'm telling you but a

play00:20

quick recap good engine bad engine bad

play00:24

engine you just saw good engine going in

play00:28

the red one RS3 engine

play00:30

going in here that's pretty much what

play00:32

we're doing so in today's video we're

play00:34

going to be stripping down the RS3

play00:36

engine cuz this also come out of a

play00:37

damaged

play00:38

RS3 um so there's actually quite a lot

play00:41

of damaged Parts on here so we need to

play00:42

strip those down start ordering new

play00:44

parts so when we get the white one in

play00:47

and the engine out of that we can then

play00:49

fit this in all ready to go but in

play00:51

between doing that when we take the

play00:53

engine out of this one which is good I

play00:55

need to put it in the red one and sell

play00:56

the red one now I don't know if I've

play00:58

just helped you or confused you I think

play00:59

I've pretty much confused myself

play01:01

explaining all that uh yeah just go with

play01:03

me and for those of you asking about the

play01:04

GTR it needs to go on a jig which is

play01:07

what the hold up is about I was trying

play01:09

to get my own jig but there's just not

play01:10

enough room really in this Workshop to

play01:12

do that uh so I have found someone local

play01:14

to me that's going to get it on the jig

play01:16

but I'm just literally waiting uh for

play01:18

them to be able to do it and on compete

play01:20

for cars now guys is the t-rock that I

play01:21

just recently rebuilt now this is HPI

play01:24

clear low mileage only a year old so

play01:26

you've got manufacturers warranty

play01:27

remaining tickets are only 99 go grab

play01:30

them only 50% of the tickets are sold so

play01:33

far guys so go grab a ticket it's a

play01:34

great little car and there's also a

play01:36

20,000 cash alternative if you don't

play01:38

fancy the car so as I said we'll start

play01:41

off with the RS3 engine and start taking

play01:43

Parts off of this and I'm going to write

play01:44

a list go to Audi directly ring up and

play01:47

see how much they're going to pull my

play01:48

pants down for all new parts cuz uh we

play01:51

need like rocker covers damaged there

play01:53

we've got the turbo outlets and inlets

play01:55

although I have a dazer turbo now I just

play01:58

thought i' pause it there cuz I keep

play01:59

saying the word dazzer and realize that

play02:01

not everyone's going to know what I'm

play02:02

going on about dazzer relates to the

play02:04

engine code of the new facelifted RS3 8

play02:07

engine it has an aluminum block instead

play02:09

of an iron block which is what this one

play02:10

has and it also has a different turbo

play02:12

now the turbo on the facelift the dazer

play02:15

turbo is actually a better turbo and has

play02:17

better gains when you remap them which

play02:19

is why I'm changing it to that so now

play02:22

you know uh so I need to actually give

play02:24

them a regge from a facelift RS3 cuz

play02:25

we're going to need facelift intake

play02:27

pipes and intercooler pipes as well cuz

play02:29

I I think they're going to be slightly

play02:30

different um I also need to Source a

play02:33

down pipe as well because uh yeah this

play02:36

one's no good because obviously it's a

play02:38

pre-f facelift downpipe uh we also need

play02:40

engine mounts gearbox and um engine

play02:44

there is a few other bits um I actually

play02:47

just noticed a minute ago a bit of fire

play02:48

damage in here as well cuz that pipe's

play02:50

been burnt and there looks like a maybe

play02:52

a few little flames in there so

play02:54

hopefully that's nothing I'm I'm hoping

play02:56

that's just something's rested against

play02:58

ah there we go look I think it's just

play02:59

something's rested against the exhaust

play03:01

when the crash

play03:02

happened uh probably this pipe actually

play03:04

that would make sense and it's got hot

play03:06

melted little bit of a fire hopefully

play03:08

nothing too bad um we need um cooler

play03:12

pipes for the gearbox we need a new

play03:14

gearbox casing cuz that's broke yeah

play03:16

we're just going to go through

play03:17

everything and I'll try and get

play03:19

everything right so when it comes to

play03:21

getting this engine in the car it can go

play03:22

in and not have to come back out again

play03:25

so we'll start off by removing the

play03:26

intake and that is the charge pipe that

play03:28

would normally go to the intercooler and

play03:29

the take going from the airbox now both

play03:31

these are quite badly damaged so we'll

play03:32

start removing those first and that

play03:34

gives us access to our turbo which is

play03:36

already in a bad

play03:40

way I think something either got into

play03:42

this

play03:43

turbo or it's not too healthy

play03:48

anyway cuz

play03:50

uh a little bit of play I think it's all

play03:53

right

play03:56

but yeah sounds like it's catching so I

play03:58

reckon a bit of dead got in there and

play04:00

bent one of the

play04:05

turbines then to get the rest of the

play04:07

turbo off we just need to remove our

play04:08

downpipe and then we got to remove our

play04:10

oil and coant lines which go to the

play04:11

block and then also our exhaust manifold

play04:14

once we've undone the five Bool of that

play04:16

we just need to lever it off and get it

play04:18

off the

play04:19

[Music]

play04:28

head

play04:31

[Music]

play04:40

so I'm glad I took the turbo off and I'm

play04:41

glad I'm changing the turbo because this

play04:43

one is unserviceable um it's if you look

play04:47

at the cat look at that it looks like

play04:50

it's been peppered with loads of little

play04:52

bit of debris which may have happened

play04:55

but it also looks like it's got too hot

play04:58

and melted so I'm not too sure really um

play05:02

but if we look at the Turbo from the

play05:04

face of it I don't know what this white

play05:06

stuff is either is that coolant burning

play05:08

I'm not 100% um but on the face of it

play05:11

looks all right look turbine impeller

play05:14

both of them are absolutely fine but as

play05:17

you heard a minute

play05:19

ago you can hear that noise and that

play05:23

noise is the turbine shaft catching on

play05:27

the top of the housing just up here

play05:30

if you see at the bottom look there's a

play05:32

bit of a big gap probably like a 1 M Gap

play05:35

whereas at the top there there is no

play05:38

Gap and that's that noise you can hear

play05:43

there is it catching on the top but

play05:45

there's a little bit of play in it and

play05:47

if I push it

play05:50

down then wait it's hard to do but I can

play05:53

get it so it doesn't make a noise at all

play05:55

it's hard so yeah it's does need

play05:58

repairing that wouldn't be able to go

play06:00

back on the car like that so luckily I

play06:02

don't really care because we're not

play06:03

fitting that anyway we're fitting the um

play06:05

dazer turbo which we'll take a look at

play06:07

the differences in a

play06:10

moment um but otherwise yeah there's

play06:12

definitely been a little fire in here

play06:14

probably gone down there by the looks of

play06:15

it I can't see any damage inside there

play06:18

no debris either valves look okay so I

play06:22

think we're going to be okay there so

play06:24

I'm just going to put a load of tape

play06:26

over this in a minute tape all those

play06:27

holes up as well cuz there's just a lot

play06:29

of dirt that needs cleaning off of this

play06:31

before we can do too much more yeah I

play06:34

was hoping I could sell that turbo one

play06:35

for a couple of hundred quid but now I

play06:37

can't uh not the end of the world I

play06:39

suppose but um yeah we move on we keep

play06:41

going and find some more broken bits so

play06:44

already the bills are racking up new oil

play06:46

cap 33 quid um new engine mounts and

play06:50

gearbox Mount I think about 190 quid for

play06:53

both and these are the or caps brand new

play06:55

the engine mounts are second hand um new

play06:57

wishbones I think was about 100 pound uh

play07:00

what else have we got we've got the

play07:02

rocker cover just bought a brand new one

play07:04

of those for 100 quid as well um and

play07:07

that is pretty much all we need to get

play07:08

the engine into position stuff like all

play07:11

these coolant hoses uh wiring Etc we can

play07:14

start working on once the engine and

play07:16

gearbox is in the car now I've just been

play07:19

speaking to someone who has recently

play07:20

converted that CZ GB engine uh to a

play07:24

dazer turbo basically doing what I'm

play07:26

doing here and thank you very much he

play07:28

sent me a link to what I need to be a to

play07:30

do it um another 250 quid down the drain

play07:34

but we need a few adapters so what I

play07:36

thought this coolant pipe here is

play07:38

interchangeable so is the this pipe here

play07:41

the oil return pipe um it's these two

play07:44

pipes here that need adapters fitting on

play07:46

them um so they can fit into the engine

play07:51

so yeah 250 quid later couple of

play07:53

adapters and also I need a new turbo

play07:56

actuator because that one is vacuum fed

play07:59

the old old one whereas the new one is

play08:01

pressure Fed so I have to buy a new

play08:03

actuator to do that as well so I think

play08:06

the actuator is the most expensive part

play08:08

so yeah Parts ordered yeah and things

play08:11

like the drive shafts I I'll probably

play08:13

send them away to be repaired and

play08:14

reconditioned but they can be done as I

play08:16

say once the engine is already in the

play08:19

car so now while we're waiting for the

play08:20

RS3 engine parts to turn up we're going

play08:22

to get the white Octavia into the

play08:24

workshop we're going to start stripping

play08:25

off the damage basically most of the

play08:26

front end uh and then we'll take the

play08:28

engine out as well and then I'll don't

play08:31

know how far I'll get in this video but

play08:32

I'll speed up the process fitting the

play08:33

engine into the red one there's a lot

play08:36

going

play08:37

[Music]

play08:57

on so good news uh my LED headlight

play09:00

still work so that's an absolute result

play09:02

and I've just found out the hard way

play09:03

well I think no it's actually a good way

play09:05

the emergency proactive pedestrian

play09:08

systems the you know when emergency

play09:10

braking uh is actually really good and I

play09:13

didn't realize it works in Reverse too I

play09:16

was just reversing the car into the

play09:17

workshop and uh completely daydreaming

play09:20

about what I was going to film next and

play09:21

I completely forgot I placed my camera

play09:24

there to film me reversing into the

play09:25

workshop and as I was driving backwards

play09:27

it literally just slammed on the brakes

play09:29

on me flashed up on the dash and works

play09:31

really well because it stopped me from

play09:33

running over my camera so that works and

play09:35

it works in Reverse so if you didn't

play09:37

know you

play09:38

[Music]

play09:48

know so removing the engine on this

play09:50

we're going to do a little bit

play09:51

differently because of the front ends

play09:53

all damaged you're going to have to take

play09:54

off the front anyway so I'm going to

play09:56

remove all the um bumper the

play09:59

lock carrier intercooler radiator and

play10:02

we're going to pull the engine out

play10:03

through the front and we're going to

play10:04

have to do that anyway cuz when we're

play10:05

putting the RS3 engine in it's not

play10:07

definitely not going to be as simple so

play10:09

I'm going to need as much access as

play10:10

possible to get it in and there's no way

play10:12

I think I could raise it up through the

play10:14

bottom so yeah the whole front end of it

play10:15

is coming off now just looking at the

play10:18

damage um it should be superficial on

play10:20

this I don't think we've looked at it

play10:21

before uh this is a category n car but

play10:25

if you look at my uh go and click on the

play10:26

top round Corner when you got 5 minutes

play10:27

go watch the video I in the polo and the

play10:30

S1 category cars are a bit hit Miss at

play10:32

the moment we don't know what's going on

play10:34

so um it should be superficial I think

play10:38

oh bit of body damage there that should

play10:40

be a cat S I think um yes we're going to

play10:43

remove all this have a look at the

play10:44

damage but I think Wing headlight

play10:49

bumper uh few probably bits few little

play10:51

bits behind the bumper but it does drive

play10:54

straight um so yeah so let's get let's

play10:57

start stripping the parts down now

play10:58

because we're do doing the engine

play10:59

transport we need to remove as much as

play11:00

possible anyway so we're going to start

play11:02

with the front wheels and both of the

play11:03

wheel Arch liners that just gives us a

play11:05

little bit more access to remove the

play11:06

bumper a bit more easily and then once

play11:08

we got the bumper off yeah it was a bit

play11:09

of a mess couldn't really get into this

play11:12

corner it was all bent up and round so I

play11:13

ended up having to break the bumper just

play11:15

to get it off but once we did that it

play11:17

then come off pretty

play11:20

easily then we got just remove the under

play11:22

tray and the few screws underneath the

play11:24

bumper holding on at the bottom and then

play11:26

the whole thing can just pretty much

play11:27

fall off I'm thinking cross it should

play11:29

all just come

play11:33

off might be a bit harder this

play11:42

side oh actually I don't think we need

play11:44

to unbolt the headlight will

play11:46

we no no we

play11:51

don't oh no we do tell them by the

play11:57

wiring

play12:00

lovely our

play12:06

job and while I'm here I thought I might

play12:08

as well remove the wing as we got

play12:09

removed anyway and also the Bonnet as

play12:11

that's got to come off

play12:13

[Music]

play12:19

too right it's the only bit of real

play12:20

damage is just this tiny little bit here

play12:22

that's bent I am literally just going to

play12:25

bend that back it is nothing wrong with

play12:27

just bending this back here

play12:39

so that's now all the damage out now the

play12:41

only little bit of damage it was I just

play12:42

showed you I've just straightened it

play12:43

back up look so that's now absolute spot

play12:46

on again um so yeah the only other bit

play12:48

of damage is just this slam panel which

play12:50

we're going to remove anyway to change

play12:51

the engine so when I put it back

play12:53

together we'll just get a new Slam panel

play12:54

to put on but otherwise though there is

play12:56

no other damage which is good so the um

play12:59

crash bar the front's intact little bit

play13:00

of foam missing not too bothered about

play13:02

that but everything else is all good

play13:04

wheel Larch good everything else good so

play13:07

um that is all the damage now removed

play13:08

apart from the slam panel so what we're

play13:10

now going to do is I'm just going to

play13:12

carry on removing this slam panel

play13:13

removing that headlight and getting the

play13:15

front end off now luckily on the Octavia

play13:18

the um washer bottle is on the passenger

play13:21

side so I haven't got any of that to

play13:23

worry about um and also the Bonnet cable

play13:26

as well so luckily that's all over this

play13:28

side so we're going to car out and

play13:29

remove the whole front end and then to

play13:31

get the rest of the slam panel off it's

play13:33

quite simple headlight out it got a few

play13:35

bits of wiring to remove from the front

play13:36

bumper like the horns Etc then we've got

play13:38

the airbox which is actually connected

play13:40

to the slam panel remove the whole

play13:41

airbox we've also got the battery and

play13:43

the battery tray we have the washer jet

play13:45

hose that sits up there as well then we

play13:47

just got some intake pipes intercooler

play13:49

pipes and we've got coolant going into

play13:50

the radiator as well we need to drain it

play13:52

the radiator I normally tend to do this

play13:54

when it's too late and get coolant all

play13:56

over the floor however again I've been

play13:58

proactive and managed to actually drain

play13:59

most of it into the oil drainer so yeah

play14:01

once we got the radiator pipes off got

play14:03

the cooling out as much as possible got

play14:05

the air Cony to degas the system as well

play14:08

and then was just a case of removing the

play14:10

crash bar which holds on the slam panel

play14:12

and then just pulling the whole thing

play14:24

forward now I'm just removing the

play14:26

battery and the battery tray as we need

play14:27

to get rid of that any anyway cuz it

play14:29

sits on top of the gearbox but

play14:30

interestingly because the RS3 engine is

play14:32

bigger I think we're going to have to

play14:33

actually relocate the battery to the

play14:35

boot so that'll be quite interesting

play14:45

too right we got some good and some bad

play14:47

news but I'm pretty sure the bad news is

play14:49

going to far out way they're good um new

play14:52

genuine oil cap has just turned up so I

play14:54

can get rid of that and just stick that

play14:57

on there for now just so it's sealed

play14:59

well just not getting anything in it

play15:01

anyway I go that' be right like that so

play15:03

that's good but yeah quite bad news and

play15:06

that's because I've just been working

play15:07

away at the top here just starting to

play15:08

disconnect stuff and I just started to

play15:10

go around this side of the engine to

play15:11

start removing the coolant uh bottle and

play15:14

stuff and I noticed there was an

play15:16

additional sort of sensor here and a

play15:18

bracket and I was like well I don't

play15:20

recognize that I'm pretty sure that

play15:21

wasn't on the old engine so I've just

play15:23

gone over to the old engine and sure

play15:25

enough there is nothing here at all so

play15:29

I'm like oh my God surely these are the

play15:31

same engine they're both octav vrss

play15:33

one's a 68 plate one's an 18 plate why

play15:37

would there be any different so I just

play15:39

looked at the engine code and this one I

play15:41

don't know if you can see down there you

play15:43

probably can't but that says dkt in

play15:47

there somewhere and this one couldn't be

play15:50

any more different with C HH and usually

play15:54

engines when they're like the same

play15:56

platform but they just change a little

play15:57

bit of Hardware or something like that

play16:00

they like chh and then the letter on the

play16:02

end of the engine changes which I think

play16:04

denotes software and then one letter

play16:07

down indicates a hardware change uh I

play16:10

think it goes something like that but we

play16:12

are not even close to that we are just a

play16:14

completely different engine code Al

play16:16

together so um yeah I think I'm going to

play16:18

have to end end the video there guys and

play16:20

work out if these two engines are now

play16:23

going to be compatible um if I can swap

play16:25

everything over and if I can't I need uh

play16:29

I've yeah I've got quite a big problem

play16:30

so um I'm going to end the video there

play16:32

guys a bit prematurely but I need to now

play16:34

work out what I'm going to do I hope you

play16:35

did enjoy this video there was never

play16:37

going to be a straightforward project

play16:40

like this it was never going to go to

play16:41

plan this was always going to be on the

play16:43

cards something holding us up and yeah

play16:46

we've we've cter encountered our first

play16:48

issue um but as I say it's it's good

play16:51

content cuz it kind of it shows the

play16:53

reality of doing stuff like this

play16:54

nothing's ever easy nothing is ever

play16:56

given there's always going to be

play16:57

problems on the way so um yeah please do

play17:00

subscribe if you haven't seen these

play17:01

videos before guys um and I shall see

play17:04

you in the next one I'm going to try and

play17:06

get the uh the vrs project out one like

play17:09

one episode a week maybe on a Sunday and

play17:11

then during the week I've got some other

play17:13

stuff to film as well so while I'm

play17:15

waiting for parts for the RS3 engine to

play17:16

turn up as well I'm going to try and get

play17:18

out like two videos a week I know I keep

play17:20

saying it it's going to be very

play17:21

difficult um but I'm going to try and do

play17:23

something like that so yeah I'll catch

play17:25

you in the next one guys and uh hope you

play17:27

had a good weekend cheers
