Outlines
Highlights
The 'Children's Crusade' is a myth with no historical evidence to support it as an actual event.
The confusion around the Children's Crusade stems from a disconnect between scholarly understanding and popular narratives.
The term 'Children's Crusade' refers to a popular movement with street preaching and apocalyptic beliefs, not an actual crusade involving children.
The 13th century was a time of wealth and power for Western Christendom, leading to a cultural rebellion and emphasis on holy poverty.
Preachers of the time were advocating for a return to the spirit of the poor, in contrast to the growing wealth and power of the church and nobility.
The average person of the 13th century was deeply concerned about the failure to retake Jerusalem, leading to a belief that God might use the poor and humble instead.
The idea of the 'meek inheriting the earth' is a recurring theme in Christian ideology, suggesting God's use of the poor in historical events.
Nicholas of Cologne, a young man who preached about Jerusalem, believed he would part the sea to reach the Holy Land, but his story remains uncertain.
Accounts of Nicholas's followers being tricked and sold into slavery are likely part of medieval storytelling tropes rather than concrete history.
Steven the Shepherd, another figure associated with the movement, gathered followers and had an audience with King Philip II, but no crusade ensued.
The story of the Children's Crusade reflects the emotional and personal relationship with Jesus that was emerging in the 13th century.
Devotion to the Blessed Mother became increasingly important during this period, indicating a shift towards a more intimate connection with religious figures.
The myth of the Children's Crusade may have persisted due to the increasing use of sea travel for actual crusades, leaving the poor feeling left behind.
The Crusades were a societal phenomenon that touched every economic class, not just the actions of the nobility and the church.
Tom Madden's 'New Concise History of the Crusades' provides a brief but informative discussion on the myth of the Children's Crusade.
The video emphasizes the importance of debunking the myth of the Children's Crusade to understand the true history and impact of the Crusades.
Transcripts
all right guys we need to talk okay any
time I make a video discussing some
theoretical aspect of the crew say it's
like I just did this video asking the
question were the Crusades unchristian
like did the Crusades
you know violate some fundamental aspect
of of Christian teaching and any time I
make a video like this inevitably
somebody in the comments section says
something along the lines of okay but
what about the Children's Crusade what
about the Children's Crusade indeed
let's finally put this issue to rest
let's let's address this so-called
Children's Crusade there's quite a bit
confusion about the quote-unquote
Children's Crusade and you know the main
confusion seems to be that people think
it happened people think there was some
event that took place in the 13th
century in which a bunch of children you
know thousands of them the story usually
goes that you know thousands of children
got together and said we're going to go
conquer the Holy Land and these you know
children they they marched off as some
huge army and sailed off to the Holy
Land where they were all killed or sold
into slavery or something like that
that's usually how the story goes and I
mean yeah the fact is nothing like that
happen absolutely nothing like that
happened in the Middle Ages nothing like
that happened in history the Crusades
there's not a shred of evidence that
anything like that happened this is one
of those areas to where I think you know
there's a disconnect between the
scholarly world and popular conversation
about the Crusades a lot of these
general histories don't really even
mention the Children's Crusade because
again it's a mythological thing it's
it's not really a real aspect of
Crusades history and so a lot of
scholars I guess just are not interested
in that but this seems to be a popular
meme or a a common you know topic that
seems to come up when people are out
there just chattering about the Crusades
and you know when you think about it it
is a catchy meme you know Children's
Crusade the idea of a bunch of children
marching off
you know on this crazy crusade this it
seems to be used as a way to say well
wow the whole Crusades thing was just
crazy I mean look at this Children's
Crusade thing right okay but but uh
nothing like this ever happened so so
it's not it's it's ridiculous to attempt
to judge or evaluate the history of the
Crusades based on this this fantasy this
this this false image you know something
that did not happen okay so what's the
deal with this what's actually going on
with the Children's Crusade Tom Madden
and the new concise history of the
Crusades one of the few general Crusades
histories I was able to find that
actually provides a good little
discussion of the Children's Crusade
issue he says the Children's Crusade was
not a crusade and no children were
involved and I think that's that's a
pretty good opening line for the
Children's Crusade again this was not an
actual event there was no actual you
know crusade of this sort what the
concept refers to is a popular movement
a popular movement of street preaching
and apocalyptic beliefs really we have
to understand the 13th century and what
was going on in European civilization at
this time the 13th century was a time of
great wealth rising wealth and power for
the West this was a period when Western
Christendom was coming to be on par with
the Islamic world and Byzantium in terms
of its level of culture its wealth the
extent of its trade that sort of thing
and in many ways was beginning to
surpass Islam and Byzantium the reaction
to this in some sectors of Western
European culture was sort of a rebellion
against all this this this newfound
wealth this is a great expansion of the
economy some pious reactions to this was
to emphasize holy poverty this idea of
you know turning away from this
embracing
more of the the spirit of the poor many
very eloquent
and you know impactful preachers we're
beginning to wander around and you know
preach about these ideas and preach
about Jerusalem for example people were
very concerned about Jerusalem there's
this myth I think that the Crusades
movement in this this attempt to capture
the Holy Land was some kind of
peripheral concern of European
civilization that maybe you know your
average person was not really attuned to
this but really your average person was
where the feelings for this sort of
thing you know were strongest ordinary
people were thinking about Jerusalem and
this failure to retake Jerusalem you
know the fact that at this point the
Crusades and the Holy Land were not
going so well it was bringing up a
question well you know all these
powerful you know militarily powerful
Nobles and the church with its wealth
are seem unable to to reconquer the Holy
Land is God going to use the poor and
the humble to do this instead so this
was the subject of street preaching this
was the subject of popular feeling in
some sectors and this is where the real
issue lies I think you know people this
has come down to to the modern world
as this idea of a Children's Crusade as
children doing this but what this really
was was this issue of God and how he
acts through the poor through the humble
through the simple this is a reoccurring
theme in you know Christian ideology is
this idea that you know the meek shall
inherit the earth I mean Christ himself
was born as you know an impoverished
babe in a manger he didn't come into the
world as some sort of great conquering
warrior so this is a powerful thing you
know in throughout Christian history is
this idea of the poor and God using the
poor God using the humble so this was
the idea that was circulating around
among some people
maybe God is not going to use you know
powerful nights and the wealthy church
to retake Jerusalem maybe he is going to
inspire the impoverished the humble
Shepherd's Street Preachers
they will be the ones to liberate the
Holy Land or help facilitate God in
liberating the Holy Land
there are really only two figures we can
pinpoint with much clarity at all in
relation to this phenomenon and we don't
know that much about them you know the
the writings we have about them are very
vague but there are some details we can
we can you know come up with one of
these is a young man by the name of
Nicholas of Cologne he was wandering in
the streets preaching about Jerusalem
and he had this idea that he was going
to walk to the sea and the sea was going
to open up and he was going to cross
over to Jerusalem and you know God was
going to work this miracle the outcome
of all this is uncertain
we don't really know necessarily if
anything came of this apparently this
Nicholas and his followers he began to
gather some followers around him you
know the poor there's some accounts that
say once they got to the Alps most most
of them turned back I mean you know
understandable there's some accounts
that some of them may have made it to an
Italian port and this is where the story
comes from that some unscrupulous
Italian merchants tricked you know
Nicholas and a few of his followers and
just got them on a ship and they just
carried them off to some Muslim port
where he sold them all into slavery
again this is sort of a vague tradition
storytelling it doesn't come to us from
any kind of concrete account could
something like this have happened
possibly more than likely though this
sounds a lot like a lot of the typical
tropes in medieval storytelling you know
the innocent being fooled and led astray
some wicked wealthy man betraying them
that kind of thing but you know it may
have happened it may not have happened
but this particular bit of folklore
seems to
you know where the big popular imagery
of the Children's Crusade comes from
what you always hear is oh well all
these children you know tried to march
off to the Holy Land and they all ended
up being sold into slavery by the
Muslims the other figure we can identify
is Steven the Shepherd Steven was from
France he was a young man again and
supposedly he was receiving messages
from Jesus as he was kind of going
around and talking about this he
gathered a group of followers around him
mostly shepherds again not children but
the meek the humble the poor and Stephen
and his followers went all the way to
Paris where they had an audience with
King Philip the second they delivered
Jesus's messages there to Philip about
the crusade he was supposed to lead a
crusade if they made it to Philip he
seems to have been courteous to them but
of course as we know philip ii was not
interested in crusading he had cut and
run early on in the Third Crusade but
that's all that there is really to this
story again you know kind of a vague
story definitely not some kind of
crusade definitely not some kind of
Children's Crusade so yeah this is the
thing this is all there is really to the
Children's Crusade it tells us a lot
about the popular feelings of the 13th
century and you know the mood of you
know where Christianity was going at
that point among some people one
interesting thing about this period like
the 12th into the 13th century is this
is a period when there's more of this
emotionalism coming into Christian
belief this idea of having this more
personal relationship with Jesus this
kind of personal almost brotherly
connection with him devotion to God's
mother the Blessed Mother becomes more
important when you know she's this
motherly figure this is a very you know
something that this that kind of touches
human beings in a very intimate way this
idea of a connection to Christ's mother
she's our mother as well all of this
interestingly
this is really where the origin of this
more emotional you know more personal
idea about Jesus seems to come from so I
hope you guys found that interesting I
do think it's important for us to
finally put to rest this idea of the
Children's Crusade this this silly myth
that a large army of children marched
off to the Holy Land no that did not
happen you know another reason that this
became more of a common thing is that
increasingly during this period Crusades
were traveling via ship they were not
taking the overland route that they had
taken during a first and second crusade
so this was tough for you know a lot of
the poor the humble who maybe wanted to
travel with one of these great Crusades
you know they could not purchase passage
on a ship of course you know if you're
walking yeah you can you can just walk
all the way to the Holy Land but that's
that was increasingly not the case for
these these large Crusades so again
another source of how you know the poor
the humble were feeling more left behind
maybe they were seeking an outlet for
this this dedication that they felt to
the cause of the Crusades and again
that's the thing about the Crusades they
touch every level of society in you know
in the high middle ages
this is not just something the nobles
and the church are doing this is
something you find at every level of
society this was very appealing to to
Christians you know of every economic
class so again Tom Madden does have a
pretty basic little overview of the
Children's Crusade in the new concise
history I think a lot of you hopefully
have this book at home so you can check
that out again hope you guys enjoyed the
video I will talk to you soon
